Written by Pakzad, Find Your Friends watches as Amber and her four best girlfriends take a trip to escape the L.A. bubble and cut loose in Joshua Tree for the weekend. But upon arrival, they quickly realize the locals don’t want them there. As the hostile environment escalates, our girls are disparaged by their aggressive neighbor, dismissed by the cops, and, it seems, even being stalked by some local men. Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

Jessica Rothe is sharing an update on a third installment of Happy Death Day, and the star of the horror franchise is ready to face off with the Bayfield Babyface Killer once again.
In a new interview, while promoting her new film Boy Kills World, Rothe shared that director Chris Landon had an idea for the third film in the saga.
“I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out,” Rothe told Screen Geek. “We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed.”
She continued, “I think Tree [Gelbman] deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”

Happy Death Day was a huge success for Blumhouse, grossing $125 million on a budget of just $4.8 million. The sequel didn’t quite hit those same numbers, but it still did well enough that fans were expecting to see Happy Death Day 3. Well, it’s been five years and not much has happened, despite writer/director Christopher Landon working on the script and star Jessica Rothe eager to return.
While speaking with ScreenGeek, Jessica Rothe gave a hopeful update regarding Happy Death Day 3.

It’s now been five years since the release of sequel Happy Death Day 2U, Christopher Landon’s sequel to the Groundhog Day-style slasher movie from 2017. Both films star Jessica Rothe as final girl Tree Gelbman, and director Christopher Landon had been planning on bringing the character – and the actor – back for a third installment. So… where is it?!
We’ve been talking about a potential Happy Death Day 3 for several years now, with the ball in producer Jason Blum’s court. Happy Death Day 2U scared up $64 million at the worldwide box office, a far cry from the first film’s $125 million. But with a reported production budget of just $9 million, that first sequel was profitable for Blumhouse. So again… where is it?!
Chatting with Screen Geek this week while promoting her new action-thriller Boy Kills World, franchise star Jessica Rothe provided a hopeful update on Happy Death Day 3.

“Happy Death Day” is back for one more kill, according to lead actress Jessica Rothe.
The “Boy Kills World” star told ScreenGeek that director Christopher Landon already has a third feature set to cap off the “Groundhog Day”-type horror trilogy. Rothe plays sorority sister Tree Gelbman who relives her own murder in the 2017 original film. That movie grossed $125 million at the global box office against a budget of $4.8 million. A 2019 sequel similarly did well, garnering $64 million against a budget of $9 million.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first, and we’ve previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus season 2), Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson, who has a large following on his parent-run Tik Tok account. Now Deadline reports that Jeffery Self of Search Party and The...

The month of April seemingly sailed by with far too many moderate releases, and the month ends this weekend with more of the same. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino returns with the sexy tennis drama “Challengers,” starring the powerhouse trio of Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”) and Mike Faist (“West Side Story”) as superstar tennis players who fall into a competitive love triangle. This is Zendaya’s first movie after “Dune: Part Two,” and it will be a real test for her as a box office star, since sports dramas can be hit or miss. “Challengers” really is riding on her popularity to avoid the pitfalls of the genre.

Christopher Landon is to make Drop, a new thriller whose cast is coming together. More on the movie right here.
It’s been several months now since Christopher Landon – he of Happy Death Day and Freaky – departed Scream 7 as cast members Melissa Barrera (currently on the big screen in the terrific Abigail) and Jenna Ortega left the films for different reasons (Ortega’s commitments to shooting the new series of Wednesday were said to have taken her out of the film). Landon was reported to have moved on at the end of last year, but even then, it was weeks before that he apparently quit the project.
While Kevin Williamson picks up Scream 7 – with a returning Neve Campbell – Christopher Landon has effectively gone home, to Jason Blum’s Blumhouse company. Well, that and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. The two production companies are coming together for the film Drop,...

A lot of Scream franchise fans were hoping Melissa Barrera would reprise the role of Samantha Carpenter from Scream (2022) and Scream VI in a third Scream movie, and it has been said that the directors of those films, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, wanted to return for a Scream 7 that would wrap up the Sam Carpenter story as a trilogy. But that’s not how it worked out. The directors went off to make Abigail, and Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media weren’t willing to wait for them to circle back to Scream 7. So Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were, as they put it, “exited” from the project and it started moving forward without them… only to hit a series of speed bumps. Including the day when Barrera was fired after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. So there...

Ghostface will return in Scream 7 for Paramount and Spyglass, and Variety reports this week that franchise mainstay Courteney Cox is in talks to return as Gale Weathers.
Cox’s Gale Weathers has been part of the franchise since the very beginning, with Cox starring in every single installment in the franchise to date. While Dewey Riley was killed off in the fifth installment, Gale just keeps on surviving, most recently beating the odds in Scream VI. How many more massacres can Gale manage to survive? Is her number finally coming up?
It was recently announced that Neve Campbell will also return in Scream 7, with Campbell herself revealing that she’ll be back as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming Spyglass sequel.
Additionally, original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson will Direct the film.
Williamson recently wrote on Instagram, “It’s been nearly 30 years since my very first script, ‘Scream,’ was directed by the legendary Wes Craven.

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

The Core Four is no more. Although Scream (2022) and Scream VI set up the characters of Samantha Carpenter, Tara Carpenter, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Chad Meeks-Martin as the new leads of the Scream franchise, that group is not going to end up being in Scream 7, whenever that film goes into production. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. He's back with the Blumhouse family for a new thriller called Drop, which has The White Lotus' Season 2 breakout Meghann Fahy starring.
Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach are behind the script for this one, which surely no one will be all that surprised to learn is being kept quiet on the plot front. But Deadline has heard it's "a fast-paced thriller". What can we speculate based on the title? Er… A drop of poison is involved? Or probably more likely it might involve a potential fall from a great height? (Likely with fewer bonkers vulture interactions).
This one will be a co-production between Blumhouse and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes gang, with Universal handling distribution.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. Things are looking good for him now that he has escaped from that mess, as he recently signed on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad, and now Deadline reports that he’ll be directing the “fast-paced thriller” Drop for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise. Drop has even found its lead already: Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus.
Details on the story Drop will be telling have not been revealed. All we know is the “fast-paced thriller” description and the fact that the screenplay has been written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach,...

Bill Skarsgård has quickly become an actor whose very presence in a film suggests something twisted is about to go down -- that's what happens when you play a child-eating clown monster in two of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. But where "Barbarian" cleverly used that foreknowledge to subvert audience expectations and "John Wick: Chapter 4" embraced it by casting the "It" star as the slimeball Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont, Moritz Mohr splits the difference in his feature directing debut, "Boy Kills World." Instead of casting Skarsgård as a blood-thirsty killer, the film casts him as a righteous killer in the vein of John Wick himself. And you know what? It might just work!
While it didn't exactly blow critics away last year during its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, "Boy Kills World" still managed to garner praise for its distinct blend of bloody slapstick action and irreverent comedy.

After working together on the 2021 version of Wrong Turn, director Mike P. Nelson and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy are re-teaming for the Brazil-set creature feature Titan – and Deadline reports that Kiana Madeira of the Fear Street trilogy and Jessica Rothe of the Happy Death Day movies are set to star in the film!
The story Titan is set against the backdrop of Brazil’s Curuçá River in the present day. When a team of young doctors embark on a local humanitarian mission through the Amazon rainforest, it soon becomes clear that not everyone – or everything – is happy to see them. Their arrival draws the attention of an ancient predator, the “Boiúna”. This ancient killer, dominant on land and water, clashes to reclaim the jungle. The ensuing fight for survival blurs the roles of hunter, prey, and hero.
The film is coming our way from the Resident Evil franchise makers at Constantin Film and Jb Pictures.

Kathryn Newton Talks ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ Young Avengers, ‘Big Little Lies 3’ and ‘Freaky Death Day’
Kathryn Newton’s feature film career continues to bear fruit.
Just five years ago, she was a series regular on two hit television series, HBO’s Big Little Lies and Netflix’s The Society, but when the pandemic played a role in the un-renewal of the latter, Newton wasted no time amassing an impressive slate of films. First up was Christopher Landon’s well-received slasher comedy, Freaky, that made three times its $6 million production budget during the height of the pandemic. She then followed that up with Ian Samuels’ hidden time-loop gem, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, on Amazon Prime Video. In between these two films, she also received a career-altering offer to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang, beginning with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and potentially a Young Avengers movie at some point.
That brings us to her busy 2024, as Newton made...

The writer and director of slasher-comedy Freaky are reuniting for a brand new time-traveling slasher movie titled Time Cut, with Christopher Landon producing and Michael Kennedy writing the script alongside Hanna Macpherson (“Into the Dark”). MacPherson also directs Time Cut, which has been described as “Back to the Future meets Scream.”
We’ve learned today that Time Cut is coming to Netflix in 2024!
In the upcoming slasher, “A teenage girl travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister.”
It sounds like this one is cut from the same cloth as Freaky, Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Knife and Totally Killer, part of a new breed of horror-comedy-slasher hybrids.
Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) and Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) star alongside Michael Shanks, Griffin Gluck, Rachael Crawford, Jordan Pettle, Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O’Connor.
Time Cut features a story by Michael Kennedy.

At one point, Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures were wanting to move Scream 7 into production so quickly, they couldn’t even wait for Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett to finish working on their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter). With returning writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick working on the script, the companies hired Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon to direct the film and started reaching out to actors. Then everything fell apart. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara Carpenter… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from the...

Christopher Landon won’t be directing Scream 7 – but he is adding Big Bad as a project to his slate, and it might just be next.
It should, by now, be a movie hurtling towards production. However, the collapse of Scream 7 before Christmas was topped off by the news that its director, Christopher Landon, had followed two of its cast out the door.
Melissa Barrera was fired from the film following her posts on social media that were critical of the Israeli government. Not far behind her was Jenna Ortega, with the star of one of Netflix’s biggest shows – Wednesday – having to honour her commitments to that production. She was thus out of Scream 7 too.
The immediate knock-on from this was that whatever script and story had been planned for the new film was pretty much out of the window, given that two stars needed replacing. And thus,...

We’ve seen Groundhog’s Day as a slasher with Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Life as a slasher with It’s a Wonderful Knife, Freaky Friday as a slasher with Freaky, and Back to the Future as a slasher with Totally Killer. Next in the “this movie, but it’s a slasher” line-up is Departing Seniors, which mixes the high school slasher set-up with elements from Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. Dark Sky Films will be giving Departing Seniors a limited theatrical and VOD release on February 2nd, and with that date right around the corner a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Audiences didn’t have a lot of new choices, nor a mega late-December blockbuster to ring in the first weekend of the new year at the movies, but the studio titles on offer are still drawing crowds and seeing strong holds, particularly with ongoing holidays in many international box office markets. Milestones are also being set as Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka topped $300M overseas while Disney’s Wish crossed $200M worldwide and AMC touted a new benchmark for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Though Swift lost out in the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category at the Golden Globes on Sunday, her movie has now grossed $261.6M worldwide, overtaking the previous global box office record holder for a documentary, Michael Jackson’s This is It, according to AMC.

The merger between Jason Blum’s company Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster is complete, Blum announced on January 2.
“Our deal is …. Done,” the producer wrote on X. “@blumhouse and #AtomicMonster have officially joined forces. The preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof.” Blum shared the news along with a sizzle reel mashing up both companies’ biggest brands, from “Get Out” to “The Purge” to “Paranormal Activity” on the Blumhouse end and “The Conjuring,” “Aquaman,” and more on the Atomic Monster end.
Boasting that they’re the “preeminent homes for horror” is right. Wan and Blumhouse’s horror movies have brought in more than $8.5 billion in box office since between 2004 and November 2022 when the advanced merger talks were first announced. Their combined companies also include the “Halloween,” “Happy Death Day,” “Insidious, “Annabelle,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” and “The Exorcist” franchises.

Director Christopher Landon says he is exiting Scream 7 after the “dream job… turned into a nightmare.”
In a social media post on Saturday, Landon wrote, “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”
Landon’s departure follows the firing of Scream actress Melissa Barrera over her vocal support of Palestine, as well as co-star Jenna Ortega’s decision to not return.

Landing your dream job doesn’t always turn out to be good, as director Christopher Landon suggested on X today, announcing that he’s quit Scream 7. Indeed, the director didn’t mince words, writing that “it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The director is likely referring to the myriad behind-the-scenes issues that seem to be prematurely killing what initially came off as a promising relaunch for the venerable franchise. Back in November, it was announced that breakout star Melissa Barrera, who was leading the franchise, had been fired due to social media posts in the wake of the Israeli-Hamas war that were deemed anti-semitic by some.
Landon, in a staggering honest post to X, initially made his displeasure known right then and there, writing, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.“ Only days later, it was announced...

The filmmaker said, “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago.

Last week, we heard the shocking news that Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera won’t be reprising the role of troubled heroine Samantha Carpenter in the upcoming Scream 7, as she had been fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media. The next day, it was revealed that Barrera’s co-star Jenna Ortega, who played Samantha’s sister Tara, will also be absent from Scream 7. Scheduling issues were blamed for Ortega’s exit, as she’ll be spending several months filming Wednesday season 2 in Ireland next year. Many fans rejected that explanation, assuming Ortega had dropped out in solidarity with Barrera. But a new The Hollywood Reporter article claims that Ortega’s Scream 7 absence is actually due to a pay dispute – you know, the same issue that caused Neve Campbell to...

Review: Separately, Tyler MacIntyre and Michael Kennedy have delivered two of the most popular cult slasher films of recent years – Tragedy Girls and Freaky. Now they have teamed up to bring us It’s a Wonderful Knife, a film that follows the current trend of giving slasher movies a high concept twist. Happy Death Day was a time loop slasher, Totally Killer was a time travel slasher, Freaky was a body swap slasher. This time, we’re getting a movie that asks, “What if It’s a Wonderful Life had a masked killer in it?”

It’s been a fraught week for the production of Scream 7. First, it was announced that star Melissa Barrera was fired due to social media posts that were perceived as anti-semitic (an accusation she denies). Then, breakout star Jenna Ortega was also taken off the cast list due to conflicts with her hit Netflix series, Wednesday. Faced with the two biggest stars of the newly-rebooted franchise no longer being part of the sequel, Variety is reporting that a significant “creative reset” is underway, with the hope that original franchise star Neve Campbell will return as Sidney Prescott.
Campbell has long been open to returning to the series after skipping the sixth film due to a pay dispute. Many, including original franchise mastermind Kevin Williamson, shamed the studio, saying Campbell should be paid what she’s worth. Now that Barrera and Ortega, two rising genre stars, are out, Campbell may...
