Being a superstar doesn’t always mean having chart hits.
From massive rock groups and boy bands to iconic vocalists and singer-songwriters, there are countless acts that have managed to inspire generations of entertainers and win over millions of fans without having ever actually notched a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Over the years, there have been some especially surprising icons who would seem to have a few No. 1s under their belt, but for whatever reason, their songs never managed to wind up sitting at the top spot of the chart.
Not having a No. 1 doesn’t take away from these talented artists’ repertoire, and it’s pretty interesting to see how charts don’t always mean everything when it comes to a musician’s success and impact on the culture.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wednesday’s pivotal Single Parents Season 2 finale. If you haven’t watched yet, go read — something other than this recap — quietly to yourself.
“I think I’m in love with you.” We waited the entirety of Single Parents’ awesome Season 2 finale for Will to say it to Angie or vice-versa — we weren’t picky — only to find out that before “No. Wait. What? Hold On.” began, one of them had said it, they’d just been too drunk to remember until it was too late. Or was it too late? Omg! Yes, the episode...

Noah Reid is following up his time on Schitt's Creek with Gemini, a new album—and E! News has your first look at his new music video for "Hold On," the first single off the album. "The video for 'Hold On' had to be done fast and had to be done carefully. I had other songs that were ahead of it in the singles line-up, but once it was clear the effect Covid-19 was having on the entire world, it felt like this was the song that would resonate the most," Reid said. "I wanted the video to represent the feeling of being isolated and unsure of how things would work out, and also the feeling of joy and celebration when you're on the other side of the challenges you've been...

Nineties R&b outfit En Vogue shared a rare Japanese-only B-side, “Mover,” that will appear on the upcoming 30th-anniversary edition of their debut album, Born to Sing, out digitally April 3rd via Rhino.

At age 19, Chynna Phillips was just trying to get well.
The singer, who formed Wilson Phillips in 1986 with Carnie and Wendy Wilson, had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout high school. As the trio cultivated their sound, learning together how to turn beautiful harmonies into thoughtful, original songs, she sought help.
“I was at a real crossroads in my life because I was still in a lot of pain over my ex-relationship, and I was just struggling to navigate through some pretty painful childhood experiences in therapy,” she says.

En Vogue will be musical guests on the March 17 episode of “Empire,” which also happens to be star Taraji P. Henson’s directorial debut of the show.
The group — Cindy Herron-Braggs, Terry Ellis and Rhona Bennett — will appear as themselves when Cookie (played by Henson) books them as a musical guest on her talk show “Tea Talk.” The show, titled “Come Undone” after an En Vogue song, is the third of 10 final episodes of the series, which premiered in 2015.
“We’ve been fans of ‘Empire’ from its inception,” Ellis tells Variety. “We love the infusion of performance and soundtracks — that’s been a great launching pad for upcoming artists. Season 28 of Dancing With the Stars can essentially be divided into two halves: The Sean Spicer era and the post-Spicer era. And with all due respect to the former White House press secretary, the post-Spicer era is a heckuva lot more enjoyable.
There was never any doubt that Sean was trying his best, and he gamely smiled through all of the judges’ harsh critiques each week. But as Monday’s semifinals got underway, it was refreshing to see all of the remaining couples genuinely crush it, which is exactly what should happen when we’re seven days away from handing someone the Mirrorball.

Dancing With the Stars went to the movies in its third Season 28 broadcast — and like any good film, Movie Night had its fair share of plot twists.
The episode’s most notable surprise was the official withdrawal of Ray Lewis and Cheryl Burke, who were forced to drop out of Season 28 after Ray tore three tendons in his foot. (A doctor warned Ray that if he were to keep dancing, the tendon would eventually rupture, which, no thank you.)

“Dancing with the Stars” controversially eliminated its first contestant last Monday night — Supremes legend Mary Wilson — leaving 11 celebs to compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy. Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments has they happen.
Disney owns the ABC network, so there’s no shortage of cross-promotional opportunities for the Mouse House, which has been buying up all the intellectual property it can get its hands on. Benjamin Franklin believed that only two things were certain in life — death and taxes — but longtime Ryan Murphy collaborator and recently elevated president of Ryan Murphy Productions Alexis Martin Woodall begs to differ. It’s all about music and smells in her estimation. “Nobody is ever going to smell the same thing you smell and feel the exact same way. And that’s how music is,” she says. “You hear a song and it puts you in a time and place. I argue that music is important in every show.”
Murphy wouldn’t disagree with Woodall on that score — they’re like a old married couple. And when it comes to a mutual love of music, they might be soulmates.
Fittingly, Woodall’s collaborations with Murphy have been hallmarked by a strong musical presence. Friday marks the premiere of the first product of Murphy’s record-breaking development deal with Netflix,...

The Jonas Brothers have officially kicked off their Happiness Begins tour! On Wednesday, Kevin, Joe, and Nick hit the stage at the American Airlines Arena in Miami to perform some of their greatest hits. The night was full of surprises as the brothers sang some of their most recent singles, a few of their solo songs, and some incredibly nostalgic tracks from their very first album. Honestly, it was everything we could have hoped for.
The show also included a special appearance from Sebastián Yatra, Daddy Yankee, and Natti Natasha as they sang their new Latin song, "Runaway," for the first time live. While there are bound to be even more surprises later in the tour, we can't help but obsess over all the performance videos on social media.
Wondering what to expect when you attend your concert this Summer? We've got you covered with the official tracklist from their opening night.

The Jonas Brothers have released their second music video called "Cool", just days after announcing their comeback with the recent "Sucker". The song, which has been shot in Miami, depicts the boys performing on the beach, hanging around on yachts and generally living it up on stage.?Lyrically, "Cool" isn't as focused as "Sucker" is on romance but does have some references to the Nick and Joe's significant others -- Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner respectively.?
The clearest is a "Game of Thrones" reference in tribute to Turner, Joe's fianc?e, who plays Sansa Stark in the series.?
The "Cool" video shows the brothers dressed in baggy suits, sporting stylish shades and prancing about near flashy supercars.
Nick, Joe and Kevin have said that they intend on going all out with the reunion. They will soon embark on a world tour and will be featured in an accompanying Amazon Prime video documentary series.

We are only days away from the release of the highly anticipated film adaptation of The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas's powerful New York Times bestseller of the same name. Now that the Heathers TV series is finally making its way to air, it's releasing not one but two soundtracks to celebrate.
It's been a long and winding road for the Heathers TV show to make it to air.
The dark high school series based on the 1988 film of the same name was initially set to premiere on TV Land in 2017. Then Heathers made its way over to the newly launched Paramount Network instead. Paramount decided to table Heathers for the foreseeable future following a rash of school shooting in the U.S. Finally, Paramount gave Heathers a trim from 10 episodes to 9 and is set to release the series on October 25.
To celebrate finally getting to see the light of day, Heathers is getting not one but two original soundtracks on Lakeshore Records.

Def Jam Recordings will issue the soundtrack for “The Hate U Give” on Oct. 12, featuring new songs by the rising stars Arlissa and Bobby Sessions (pictured above). The 20th Century-Fox film – which takes its title from Tupac Shakur’s acronym Thug Life, and deals with highly charged racial issues – opens a week later, on Oct. 19.
“It’s a natural fit for what we do as a company, and the culture of our company,” Rich Isaacson, exec VP of the label, tells Variety. “The movie is about race, about people who are victims of oppression who are just trying to live their lives. So many of our artists speak to these issues, from the beginning of Def Jam to today.”
The film, and the album, features hip-hop and R&B tracks from Tupac, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, Logic, Jadakiss and others. Arlissa’s “We Won’t Move” and Sessions’ “The Hate U Give,...

Season 2 of The Deuce not only has new faces, the theme song is now updated for the 1977 setting to feature more shots of the porn movie business, discos and other late-Seventies imagery. They are now accompanied by a brand new version of Elvis Costello’s “This Year’s Girl” made especially for the show. It combines Costello’s vocals from the original 1978 version with new vocals by Natalie Bergman from the band Wild Belle, to turn it into a decades-spanning duet with a faster beat.

Hive Mind, the group’s 4th LP, is its most polished, full of tranquil, yearning Quiet Storm and light-footed, live-band funk. The album plays as an extended conversation between Syd’s vocals – hyper-annunciated but gooey around the edges, massed and draped like a rumpled pile of sheets – and her rhythm section, especially the basslines of Patrick Paige II, which burrow, strut and stagger all within the space of a few bars. If the drums on Hive Mind were mixed slightly lower than is typical in modern recordings, many of the...

Advertisers celebrated the revival of Tim Allen’s multi-cam comedy Last Man Standing, at Fox’s Upfront presentation this afternoon, resuscitated after its untimely plowing under by ABC two seasons back.
But, what with the addition of Thursday Night Football to the New Fox’s schedule, sports personalities bragging about rings and MVPs, and golly-goshing about New York City and why its subway smells that way gobbled up a lot of time.
A few hours earlier, Madison Avenue celebrated the rescue of comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine by NBC, after Fox gave it the hook. And eight years after Fox opened a single-camera comedy block on Tuesday, the network is virtually out of that business, opting instead for an Allen-anchored three multi-cam comedy block on Fridays.
Ryan Murphy came to boast about the success of his drama 9-1-1 and unveil new cast regular Jennifer Love Hewitt for Season 2.

Dick Clark Productions and NBC have announced additional performers for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. Salt-n-Pepa and En Vogue will team up for a ’90s throwback during the live event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Salt-n-Peppa becoming the first female rappers to reach the top-20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart — yes, that makes me feel old too. Are you excited to see these rap and R&B pioneers take the stage on Sunday night, May 20?
Salt-n-Pepa said in a statement, “Thirty years later, we’re still ‘Pushing It’ all over the world and we’re still loved and celebrated by fans we grew up with as well as new fans. Looking back at all the barriers we’ve broken as women in this very male dominated genre of music, being the first two female rappers to break the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 is right up there as one...

SandalwoodThe film follows a predictable masala plot but has enough suspense to keep you in your seat. Rakesh MeharThere’s a blood-soaked arm hanging out the side of an autorickshaw, a couple of young rowdies who are starting to resent the godfather who brought them into the business, several gangsters hacked or shot to death, and a woman who’s been kidnapped but doesn’t seem to mind it all that much. What’s the story behind all of this and what does Shivarajkumar have to do with it? If you’ve been around social media more than a time or two, you’ve probably run into the meme that tells you in misspelled English that the human brain can easily read completely jumbled words as long as the first and last letters stay in place. Shivarajkumar’s Tagaru is much like that meme, jumbling up its narrative formula just to show that you can still have a coherent film at the end. That back-and-forth jumble is perhaps the only thing that saves Tagaru from joining the heap of formula films told predictably. The film tells the done-to-death story of a cop going outside the bounds of law to violently put down rabid gangsters. But it manages to keep you in your seat just to figure out if all the loose ends get satisfactorily tied up at the end. Along the way, there’s plenty of machismo on display and gratuitous violence, as gangsters ruthlessly hack down those in their way and the cops return the favour by shooting first and asking questions under gruesome torture later. But, thanks to the effort to keep the suspense going, there’s also an agreeable minimum of punch dialogues and unnecessary comedy tracks are kept out of the film altogether. With plenty of swooping close-ups and quickly shifting scenes, especially in the first half of the film, director Suri ensures that Tagaru never has a chance to become very boring. The acting in the film is fairly competent, and no one sticks out like a sore thumb. While Shivarajkumar maintains a stone-faced seriousness throughout, Dhananjaya and Vasishta N Simha are suitably menacing as the villains. There’s not much room for Manvitha and Bhavana to flesh out their characters, but they manage to hold their own. The major highpoint of the film is the music by Charan Raj. Popping up at unexpected intervals thanks to the twisted storyline, songs like “Badukina Bannave”, “Mental Ho Jawa” and “Hold on” make for enjoyable interludes to the film. Much like the dozens of other masala films that it shares its predictable script with, Tagaru certainly has a problematic take on the police and the law, once again portraying death by the bullet as the best form of justice. The film is also quite happy having its protagonist kidnap a woman "for her own good". Still, if you’re looking to fill your masala quota of the month, you could do worse than give Tagaru a miss.
