Vic Mignogna, known for voicing Broly in the “Dragon Ball” series of games, films, and tv shows, filed a lawsuit claiming defamation and other charges against Funimation and other voice actors on Thursday, according to public court documents.
Fellow Funimation voice actors Monica Rial and Jamie Marchi, along with Rial’s fiance Ronald Toye, are also named in the suit. Mignogna’s suit stated that he is suing for interference in other work contracts and that the charges made against him accusing him of sexual harassment are false, and affected his career due to not only Funimation’s decision to no longer work with him, but conventions also canceled his appearances. Mignogna and his lawyer, Ty Beard of Beard Harris Bullock Hughes, are seeking “monetary relief over $1,000,000.00” in addition to other relief to which Mignogna “may be justly or equitably entitled.”
In January, accusations of sexual harassment and homophobia surfaced against Mignogna.

We run through some of the best live-action film adaptations of anime… Yes, they’re out there. We promise.
It’s always an interesting and mixed experience for fans when source material like comics or animated shows transition to the silver screen in live-action form. A lot of the time these fresh takes can be complete triumphs, but one medium that continues to experience a tough time through this adaptation process is anime.
Live-action anime adaptations often feel like extremely risky endeavors, especially in America. There are extremely few situations where Hollywood takes on anime find mass success. Many American live-action adaptations of anime seem doomed before they even go into production. That’s why it’s somewhat noteworthy that early reviews on the Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron team-up, Alita: Battle Angel, are at least mixed. Even if our own review took a decidedly negative view,...

Glasgow-based distributor Anime Limited has built a reputation for daring Blu-ray releases, be it films and series which aren't that well-known, or outrageous editions for fan-favorites. As a collector, the company is definitely worth keeping an eye on, especially whenever there's an announcement about an "Ultimate Edition". In 2016 they released a jawdropping Ultimate Edition Blu-ray for the original Fullmetal Alchemist series, and I concluded the Pretty Packaging article for that with the following sentences: "Will Anime Limited ever top this? It sure will be fun to find out..." Well... that topping just happened. Anime Limited's 20th Anniversary Ultimate Edition for Cowboy Bebop arrived last week (after a few delays), and the size of the package when it arrived got me some puzzled stares from...

Streaming giant Netflix has just announced the addition of an Evangelion package to its growing anime lineup. This new bundle includes the 26 episodes of the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” television series as well as the two films, “Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion” and will become available in Spring 2019.
The critically-acclaimed and beloved series, directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by anime studio Gainax, was broadcast on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996 and since then has become extremely popular and gained a cult status.
The story is set in 2015, 15 years after a cataclysmic event, in a futuristic Tokyo-3, where the mysterious paramilitary organization Nerv fights against alien invaders called Angels. Shinji, son of the director of the special force, is recruited, along with other teenagers to pilot giant Mechas (bio-machines) known as Evangelion. The story of a nude dude who washes ashore and into the lives of four young documentary filmmakers, Kôji Fukada’s “The Man From the Sea” probably wouldn’t be of much interest beyond Asian audiences if not for the fact that its director earned the Jury Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard for his previous feature, “Harmonium.” This featherweight follow-up — which feels almost like a live-action manga, more concerned with the romantic entanglements of its central quartet than with the magical stranger referenced in its title — doesn’t necessarily belong on the festival circuit but could attract overseas distribution by virtue of such exposure.
More splish than “Splash,” the movie wants to be a modern-day fairy tale — yet another mer-myth rippling in the wake of “The Shape of Water” — but remains frustratingly ambiguous about the nature of the enigmatic Japanese guy (Dean Fujioka) who stumbles out of the crystal-blue water in the opening scene.

I Am a Hero is a zombie film, from director Shinsuke Sato (The Time of Death). Already released in Japan in 2015, the film is based on a Manga comic book. Similar to Sang-ho Yeon's Train to Busan in action and intensity, I Am a Hero brings an exciting tale to Blu-ray, this month. The film centrally stars: Masami Nagasawa, Yô Ôizumi (Fullmetal Alchemist) and Kasumi Arimura. The Blu-ray release details are hosted here. The story involves a manga artist and an apocalypse. Hideo (Ôizumi) is stuck in an office position, with dreams of making it big in the artistry world. His girlfriend breaks up with him. Meanwhile, an infection is spreading across Japan. And, this is the chance that Hideo has been waiting for, to show his true courage. I Am a Hero is definitely a film for zombie or infection type film fans. Full of action, this title...

Let me start by saying that “Fullmetal Alchemist” (and particularly the second edition) is one of my favorite anime series of all time. In that aspect, and considering the growing quality (and budget) of the recent anime adaptations, I was really eager to watch the live adaptation, although the fear of another “Attack on Titan” still lingered in the back on my mind. Let us see, though, how this one fared.
The story takes place in an alternate setting that seems like a medieval Germany in some aspects (the way the characters are presented and the way the army is structured) where technology and magic (alchemy if you prefer) coexist. The protagonists are two brothers, Edward and Alphonse, sons of a State Alchemist who is never home. The two boys also deal with alchemy, but when their mother dies, they indulge in the darker aspects of it,...

Have you seen Fullmetal Alchemist yet? It was released last year, and it really has a fairly interesting plot. Two brothers are trying to revive their mother, who has recently passed away. The whole idea goes bad in just about every way that you can imagine, and they set out on a quest to find a way to make it right. It’s interesting to see the different people who play characters in this project. It’s even more interesting to think about which five of those characters might make it the farthest in their careers beyond this particular project. Keep reading

If I had to summarize my thoughts on My Hero Academia Season 1, it would be: It has a relatable high school setting, a great lead character, amazing humor and an entertaining story. However, it ended Season 1 in a way that definitely wasn’t subtle about how a second season should be coming and I’m very glad that we got it.
As far as this part of season two goes, you don’t really need a lot of knowledge about season one to watch it. There is a recap in the first episode that doesn’t go into a lot of detail but does a good job of getting the essentials across and there are convenient flashbacks that serve as a friendly reminder or as answers throughout this arc. I can’t be certain that things from season one won’t come up after this arc is over so I...

If you’re an anime fan, you’re used to being disappointed by live-action adaptations of your favorite stories. Netflix’s new take on “Fullmetal Alchemist” appears to be no different, alas, as reviews of Fumihiko Sori’s adaptation have been mixed at best. If you’re prepared to be let down yet again, read on:
Richard Kuipers of Variety is mixed:
“The film’s greatest weakness is failing to adequately transmit the huge guilt Ed feels for having brought about his younger brother’s fate. This fundamental emotional element doesn’t receive proper attention until the story’s in full stride and then fails to resonate under the weight of uninspired dialogue and unconvincing delivery by Yamada.”
Ditto Kaori Shoji, who reviewed the live-action adaptation for IGN:
“The narrative often suffers from a lack of coherence and sequential breakdown. Perhaps in an effort to contain the sprawl, Sori...

Here's one fantastic way to avoid charges of whitewashing: just don't do it. A film adaptation of Arakawa Hiromu's Fullmetal Alchemist, directed by Sori Fumihiko, was released in Japanese theaters on December 1, 2017. Now it's arrived as a "Netflix Original" to the streaming service worldwide and it shows the folly of whitewashing characters in the vain hope of attracting bigger audiences: just don't do it. As our own Ernesto Zelaya Miñano pointed out in his review of Adam Wingard's Death Note, which debuted on Netflix last year: "Live-action versions of animes - especially the Westernized kind - are tough to pull off, and the reason why goes beyond the dreaded 'whitewashing'. Rather, there's a huge cultural barrier to overcome; anime series and TV shows...
