Hundreds of members of the Animation Guild, along with fellow IATSE members joining in solidarity, gathered at the IATSE 80 headquarters in Burbank on Saturday ahead of Monday’s start of contract negotiations.
The crowd was over twice that of the Guild’s previous rally in 2022. Animation writer and negotiating committee member Joey Clift told TheWrap that the union had over 2,000 RSVPs as of Friday, doubling the number of the 2022 event. He estimated that nearly 2,500 people attended in the near 90-degree heat.
Mike Rianda, animator known for his work on “Gravity Falls,” emceed the festivities Saturday afternoon. Rianda kicked off the rally by bringing up six “animation avengers” to the stage to rally the crowd, including “Steven Universe” creator Rebecca Sugar, “Hotel Transylvania” and “Samurai Jack” creator Genndy Tartakovsky and legendary Disney and DreamWorks animator James Baxter.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘new original event film,’ set for release in May 2026, is called The Dish.
Steven Spielberg’s next film – his first since 2022’s The Fabelmans – is due out in May 2026, and it now looks as though it has a title. During a recent IMAX presentation for investors, a slide showed a string of upcoming releases from various Hollywood studios, and there, sandwiched between the next Avengers film and The Mandalorian And Grogu is a film called The Dish.
As first noted by World Of Reel, this is undoubtedly Spielberg’s previously untitled project, vaguely billed by Universal Pictures as a “new original event film.”
The Dish title also sounds of a piece with the report going around that Spielberg’s cooking up some sort of UFO-themed movie with screenwriter David Koepp. Certainly, the title brings to mind his friend Robert Zemeckis’ terrific 1997 sci-fi film Contact, in which Jodie Foster...

In the fourth installment of the Despicable Me franchise, Gru (Steve Carrell) is officially a dad thanks to Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting him. However, peaceful family bliss soon comes grinding to a halt when criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) — and yet another archnemesis — escapes from prison and vows revenge against Gru.
It’s potentially the challenge of a lifetime to write a compelling, nay in any way descriptive, review of Despicable Me 4. If you are reading this and haven’t yet seen the movie, or even a single second of its latest trailer, you already know exactly what you’re about to read. The film is already one we’ve seen before, countless times over. This time, it’s that little bit worse. The light has faded,...

People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. What's more, if things continue to go the way they're going, that number will be $6 billion and counting in just a few years.
"Despicable Me 4" once again topped the charts over the weekend, pulling in $44.6 million domestically in its second weekend. That represents just a 40% drop week-to-week following the sequel's record-setting opening weekend. Internationally, Gru and the Minions held strong as well, pulling in another $87.9 million from overseas markets. That puts the movie's running total at $437.8 million worldwide, with a lot of gas left in the tank. More importantly, it was...

Hollywood’s fixation with tentpole sequels shows little sign of abating as Universal Pictures said on Thursday it will release Illumination Entertainment’s Minions 3 on June 30, 2027.
The studio announced the date just over a week after Despicable Me 4 – the latest entry in the franchise that spawned the Minions spin-offs – opened top in North America on $122.6m over the five-day July Fourth holiday weekend.
The Minions franchise itself has grossed just over $2.1bn worldwide and combines with the Despicable Me series for more than $5bn in ticket sales.
The third instalment will arrive five years after the release of Minions: The Rise Of Gru.

The news that both 'Minions 3' and 'Shrek 5' are in the works is a good reminder that there are many hotly anticipated sequels, prequels, and spin-offs coming soon to theaters and TV. Marketing movies is expensive—often an additional 30% of a film’s production budget—so studios rely on brand recognition to ensure their films have the widest possible reach with moviegoers. Although there is a fine line between fandom and fatigue, there are several reasons for entertainment fans to get excited for familiar characters on the horizon.
'Minions 3'
Hot on the heels of ‘Despicable Me 4,’ which is currently lighting up the box office, Universal and Illumination have announced that ‘Minions 3’ is in the works, targeting June 30, 2027 as its release date. The film will be directed by Pierre Coffin, who helmed the first three ‘Despicable Me’ films and the first ‘Minions’ movie.
‘Shrek 5’
As announced July 9, Dreamworks has set July 1, 2026 as the release date for ‘Shrek 5,’ the seventh film in the franchise, counting the two Puss in Boots films. Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Mike Myers are all on board for the sequel, but no word yet on whether Antonio Banderas will be in the cast.
‘Kraven the Hunter’
Sony’s Spider-Man universe suffered a bump in the road early this year when its February release of ‘Madame Web’ misfired at the box office. Now that Venom is getting his ‘Last Dance’ in October and ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is still in production, the studio is keen on keeping their Marvel properties bringing in new audiences. The next spin-off character to grace the screen will be Spider-Man foe Kraven the Hunter in his first on-screen appearance. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johson (as Kraven) and Russell Crowe, the film is looking for a slightly older audience and will sport an R rating
‘Gladiator II’
The first trailer recently dropped for the follow-up to the 2000 classic, ‘Gladiator.’ The all-star cast, epic action set pieces, and reputation of its director, Ridley Scott, mean there’s a lot riding on this November release. Read more about the cast in our “who’s who” breakdown of the trailer.

DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that Shrek 5 is in development, and is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026.
Original voice actors Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) are all set to return, but we're not sure if Antonio Banderas will be back as Puss in Boots despite the massive success of his recent solo adventure, The Last Wish.
The movie will be helmed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, and as head of story on Shrek Forever After, in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek 5 will be produced by franchise regular Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Brad Ableson will serve as co-director.

Shrek is one of the most iconic animated films of all time. Being a joy ride for people of all age groups, the film series was immortalized in the film industry. While the genius of DreamWorks can be thanked for it, there is no denying that the cast and their voice acting can be heavily credited for the film’s success. Its ability to not take itself too seriously made it a cult classic that people continue to visit, more than two decades after its release.

DreamWorks Animation has more green in its future.
The studio announced on Tuesday that the beloved franchise “Shrek” is coming back to theaters with a fifth installment. What’s more, “Shrek 5” has planted its flag on a date two years hence—July 1, 2026, to be precise. The studio made its declaration via social media, deploying Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and its earworm herald of “someBODY once told me.” An ogre-ifi-ed numeral 5 then did a little dance.

Confirmed for the voices are Mike Myers, the titular gassy ogre with a pure heart, Cameron Diaz as his beloved Princess Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey, the wisecracking donkey. It is unclear if Antonio Banderas, who voices Puss in Boots, will make an appearance.

We have the ability to contain our excitement for Shrek news — what we lack is the capacity! It’s been 14 long years since Shrek Forever After closed the fairytale book on DreamWorks’ beloved green-eared franchise, but now — coming off the back of the astonishingly great Puss In Boots: The Last Wish — the animation studio’s long-gestating fivequel has set a release date. As reported by THR, Shrek 5 is set to hit cinemas on 1 July, 2026, coinciding with the first film’s anniversary. And better yet, the original quadrilogy’s All Star cast — Mike Myers! Cameron Diaz! Eddie Murphy! — are back back back, too.
Plot details for this one are currently under wraps (presumably in the highest room of the tallest tower), but Puss In Boots: The Last Wish *did* end with the swashbuckling Spanish kitty setting sail for Far, Far Away, so don’t be surprised if Antonio Banderas’ name...

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will all return for the antic fairytale sequel Shrek 5, DreamWorks Animation has announced. It’s out in July 2026.
“Not too Far, Far Away,” DreamWorks Animation wrote on Twitter/X/Muskbook last night (the 9th July) as it announced that fairytale comedy sequel Shrek 5 will emerge in 2026.
Respectfully, this is a lie. The space year 2026 is an incredibly long two years away. By then we’ll all be flying around using jetpacks and taking regular trips to a branch of McDonalds on the moon, where we’ll eat burgers and fries in pill form. Also, AI will have taken over the planet and none of us will have jobs.

Original films these days are just croutons in a Hollywood buzzword salad: sequels and prequels, existing IPs and brands and reboots and remakes
The infinite monkey theorem goes: a monkey typing away at a keyboard for an infinite amount of time could, by chance, produce something worth reading – like, to take a joke from The Simpsons, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Churn out enough and treasure will emerge. Apply this idea to Hollywood, and its paralysing aversion to taking risk, and you end up in our current situation: cinemas clogged with safe, so-so sequels no one really asked for.
That is not to say brilliant films aren’t being made right now. Last year was particularly exceptional. How many years have we had a Past Lives, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, Oppenheimer and The Holdovers? How often do we get even one of those,...

Following more than a decade of the franchise lying dormant, Shrek 5's release date has been confirmed, bringing back its fan-favorite cast along the way.
Starring A-list actors like Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, the Shrek film series introduced audiences to a rib-tickling animated world that cleverly played on the fairy tale and fable characters they grew up on.
Since its debut in 2001, the mainline Shrek films have raked in over $3 billion at the worldwide box office (per Box Office Mojo). However, the road to a potential fifth film starring Dreamworks' swamp-dweller has been an arduous one, with the last proper Shrek movie coming out in 2010.

In exciting news for everyone who loved the original Shrek films, DreamWorks just announced Shrek 5 is officially happening! Mark your calendars for July 1, 2026, because that’s when we’ll see our favorite big, green ogre return to theaters.
Even better, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. I can’t wait to hear their iconic voices again! DreamWorks dropped a teaser too that plays “All Star” and says “The All-Star Returns.” Looks like they aim to capture that same magic from the first movie.

DreamWorks dropped a teaser too that plays “All Star” and says “The All-Star Returns.” Looks like they aim to capture that same magic from the first movie.

DreamWorks has officially announced Shrek 5: the long-anticipated sequel is set for release in theaters on July 1st, 2026, with original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz all returning.
Shrek 5 will mark the first new installment of the beloved animated franchise in 16 years. The film was initially slated for release following Shrek Forever After in 2010, but those plans were scrapped by former DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. With NBCUniveral’s purchase of DreamWorks in 2016, however, there’s been a renewed focus to bring Shrek back to the big screen — though it’s taken a bit longer than anticipated.
In 2022, DreamWorks released the Shrek spin-off film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which included a mid-credits scene that set the stage for Shrek 5. It was later revealed that Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri would be developing the story for Shrek 5, with Michael McCullers (The Boss Baby) writing its screenplay.

Eddie Murphy was a household name in the United States of America way before he forayed into films due to his standup comedy. But, if my memory isn’t failing me, he garnered international fame after his work in The Nutty Professor, Mulan, and Dr. Dolittle. And after he became the voice of Donkey in Shrek, every kid in the whole wide world became familiar with Murphy’s body of work. However, as the cinematic landscape, especially the comedy genre, started to change, and the pile of bad reviews turned into a mountain, Murphy decided to take a break. His return to the big screen wasn’t all that good. So, he took yet another break and returned with one of the best movies of all time, Dolemite Is My Name. Now, he seems to be in the mood to reprise some of his older roles. Comedy 2 America wasn’t good.

Heh heh heh heh heh heh!
When Eddie Murphy became the world’s biggest comedy star in the 1980s, his trademark laugh became iconic. Anyone who did a Murphy impression was really doing a Murphy Laugh impression, delivering smart-ass punchlines and punctuating them with his one-of-a-kind chuckle. The Murphy Laugh was also the Axel Foley Laugh, a chortle that was a signature part of the character.
But if you catch the new Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F when it debuts later this week on Netflix, the laugh is missing in action.
“Did you retire Axel’s laugh?” Cbr’s Kevin Polowy asked Murphy.
“It was my laugh,” Murphy corrected him. “In the ‘80s I was like, I don’t want to be known for a laugh. If somebody was doing an impression, that’s all they did. They’d be ‘Eddie Murphy!’ and (imitates his own laugh) and the audience would go,...

The popular Shrek franchise is perhaps the most recognizable property to come out of DreamWorks Animation, with How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda following closely behind. The series has had four films, two spin-off films, and a mountain of other forms of merchandise, including video games. Not to mention his popularity in the internet meme community.
The last film in the series, Shrek: Forever After, aka Shrek: The Final Chapter, was released in 2010, meaning that audiences have not seen the green ogre in 14 years. While the character of Puss in Boots received his series with a film in 2011 and a sequel in 2022, the main series has been stagnant. Rumors of a fifth film have been talked about for years, with there even being a small teaser at the end of the last Puss in Boots film.

The Shrek franchise is returning, with reboot efforts planned for not only the green ogre, but Puss in Boots.
Shrek has been in a bit of a slumber for the better part of a decade, hard as it might be to believe. The ultra-successful animated film franchise, which later became the platform for a multimedia pop culture blitz, notably spawning spinoff Puss in Boots, last focused on its main character in the fourth film, 2010’s Shrek Forever After. Yet, an untitled Shrek 5 was planned as recently as last year, until it wasn’t – and now we know why. A franchise reboot is nigh!

DreamWorks has been recommitting to properties and authors lately—the animation studio recently announced it would adapt another one of How To Train Your Dragon creator Cressida Cowell’s books. Now the production company is giving The Hollywood Reporter an update on its proposed Shrek revival. Baby Mama and The Boss Baby screenwriter Michael McCullers was tapped to craft another chapter in the ogre’s fairy tale. And apparently, with great Shrek power comes great Shrek responsibility—McCullers tells THR he felt “a pretty big reinvention” was warranted for the franchise, which already holds four films and has lots of “beloved... great characters.”
McCullers wasn’t at liberty to proffer any Shrek 5 details, but he did cop to really digging his completed script, which he describes as “really personal” to him. And in other DreamWorks news, preproduction on Hotel Transylvanian 3 is going swimmingly.

All the way back in 2001, DreamWorks Animation hit a perfect home run with Shrek. The loose adaptation of William Steig’s picture book of the same name caught the imagination of a generation of children and adults alike, and spawned a multi-billion dollar, multimedia franchise spanning 16 years and counting. The Shrek universe now comprises of four feature films, one spinoff film, six short films, two television specials, one television series, one stage musical, 12 video games, and a range of themed attractions around the world. Now, after a number of years of teasing, we finally have a solid update on the status of Shrek 5.
The screenwriter of the movie, Michael McCullers (Saturday Night Live), was recently talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his current release, The Boss Baby. During that conversation, he explained that his script for Shrek 5 is complete, and the film is in development following some corporate-level re-shuffling.

A screenplay for Shrek 5 is done - now it's up to new owners Universal to work out what to do with it...
When Universal bought up DreamWorks Animation, one of its priorities was to get the Shrek series back up and running. Since Shrek Forever After, there’s been talk of a new film, but also the sense the DreamWorks Animation did some damage to its golden goose with a bunch of follow-ups that didn’t do justice to the original.
