Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

Nunsploitation appears to be alive and well in 2024 with this week’s arrival of Immaculate, a convent-set horror movie that borrows heavily from ’70s Italian horror, the peak era of the exploitation film. Nunsploitation, a subgenre of exploitation films that hit its prime in the late ’70s and early ’80s, often features nuns behaving badly. More importantly, nunsploitation films explore themes of sexual or religious repression, frequently unleashing scathing critiques of the Church through blasphemous imagery and nuns behaving badly.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to nunsploitation horror. These taboo-shattering horror movies have more on their mind than their low-budget exploitation origins suggest.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Alucarda – Cultpix
Directed and co-written by Juan López Moctezuma, this English-language Mexican horror film stars Tina Romero as Alucarda, who was raised by nuns at a repressive Catholic convent.

Darren Lynn Bousman was ready for a change. Between 2005 and 2007, he directed three sequels to the “Saw” franchise, all of which topped the box office on their opening weekends, before he turned 30. He spent the next decade parlaying that success into passion projects, like his gonzo musical “Repo! The Genetic Opera” and a Japanese horror series that he produced, but traditional filmmaking started to feel a little played out.
“I became desensitized to making movies,” he said over Zoom this month from his home in Los Angeles. “Everyone is so distracted. We live with a computer in our hands. I have a 100-inch TV but when I’m watching movies on it, I’m on my phone checking Instagram and Twitter, going to make coffee. You’re never truly present.”
During a trip to New York, Bousman visited “Sleep No More,” the dreamy, ‘30s noir variation of “Macbeth” that transforms...

"I was dead! How am I standing here?!" Saban Films has released the first official trailer for Death of Me, yet another new film from horror filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman. He just released St. Agatha last year, and already finished the new Saw reboot Spiral (watch the trailer) but since that has been delayed until next summer, they're releasing this one before it. Death of Me has a pretty cool concept: a couple on holiday in Thailand wake up without any memory of the night before. There's footage on the camera of Neil seemingly murdering Christine, yet they're still both alive. What is really going on? Luke Hemsworth co-stars with Maggie Q, and a small cast including Alex Essoe, Kat Ingkarat, & Kelly B. Jones. This looks so twisted and intriguing! I am more than curious to find out what kind of "black magic" mystery is behind all of this. Here's...

The Leprechaun movie series, which has racked up no less than eight instalments, apparently still has its fans within the filmmaking community. Lionsgate and Syfy worked together on the most recent outing, 2018’s Leprechaun Returns, which tried to go back to the roots of the original 1980s movie after a poorly received reboot in 2014. Although there doesn’t seem to be massive demand for more Leprechaun content, director Darren Lynn Bousman is reportedly keen to take on the franchise.
Bousman, whose directing credits include several Saw movies, The Barrens, and St. Agatha, has long wanted to try his hand at a Leprechaun picture. Speaking to MTV News as far back as 2008, he had this to say about the prospect of being offered the job:
“I would do Leprechaun in a second. If Lionsgate is listening, give me Leprechaun. It’s just one of those fun popcorn movies. I would love...

After Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy “The Dead Don’t Die” enjoys a snazzy red carpet premiere as the opening night selection of the Cannes Film Festival, its next stop will bring it to diehard genre fans. The movie will make its U.S. premiere as the opening night selection of The Overlook Festival, the New Orleans horror film festival that returns to the French Quarter for the second time on May 30.
The Focus Features release finds Jarmusch bringing his distinctive deadpan approach to supernatural circumstances for the second time, following 2013’s wistful vampire tale “Only Lovers Left Alive.” For “The Dead Don’t Die,” the auteur mainstay appears to be tipping his hat to George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead,” with the tale of small town characters facing the sudden threat of the undead. On February 8th, St. Agatha will be making its way to theaters and VOD services and I recently caught up with director Darren Lynn Bousman to talk about his latest horror film. We discussed a range of topics, from updates to the film's story and working with his team from The Tension Experience, to fatherhood changing the types of stories he wants to tell, and creating an iconic villain in Carolyn Hennesy’s Mother Superior.
Can you talk about where the idea for this movie came from and what drew you to this project? Did you have any experiences with the Catholic Church or schooling growing up?
Darren Lynn Bousman: Ironically, no. One of the writers, Sara [Sometti Michaels], absolutely did, though. When I got the script, I was actually in the middle of doing The Tension Experience and the line producer of The Tension Experience says, "Hey, I've got this script.

"There is no wrong or right in this place. You're just choosing not to see it." Signature Entertainment in the UK has debuted the official UK trailer for an indie horror thriller titled St. Agatha, the latest from horror director Darren Lynn Bousman. This new "twisted horror thriller" is said to push the boundaries of the "nunsploitation" genre, in a story set at a convent in Georgia. A pregnant young woman named Mary ends up there, seeking shelter only to be met with an unsettling and horrendous evil waiting on the other side. St. Agatha stars Sabrina Kern, Carolyn Hennesy, Courtney Halverson, Trin Miller, Lindsay Seim, Hannah Fierman and Seth Michaels. The footage from this trailer does look freaky, especially near the end when it goes all out crazy. Scary stuff. When Ari Aster’s “Hereditary” premiered in the midnight section at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, it became the sort of instant sensation that makes careers overnight. Many viewers, jarred by the traumatic story of a grieving mother (Toni Collette) whose family is haunted by an ominous presence, crowned it one of the scariest movies ever made. The reaction arrived right on schedule for producer and distributor A24, which has mapped out a spooky marketing plan that included ominous deliveries at SXSW and an unnerving trailer that has been viewed nearly 3.5 million times on YouTube. The company expects the hype to pay off big time when it releases “Hereditary” nationwide on June 8.
