Bruce Timm understands how broadcast TV works. He has been working in the DC Animated Universe for decades, heading a huge number of successful films and series. He has fought battle upon battle with the committees responsible for censorship, trying to make sure his vision for a specific superhero show stayed intact.
A still from Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series
Despite this, it would seem that there was one line that even he was unable to cross. There was one iconic DC character that fans desperately wanted to see in the animated shows the franchise was releasing. Despite this, he made few to no appearances. It would seem that there was a very big reason for this.

From penning Training Day (2001) to helming the one-two punch of End of Watch (2012) and Fury (2014), David Ayer has had the film industry in the palm of his hand on a couple of different occasions.
Following the success of the latter, he then punched his own ticket to the Dceu, opting to write and direct Suicide Squad as a supervillain take on The Dirty Dozen. The film would star the likes of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot and Jared Leto’s Joker, but despite one of the most celebrated trailers of all time at 2015’s San Diego Comic-Con, the subsequent poor reception to Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and the adulation for Tim Miller’s irreverent Deadpool (2016) caused Warners to panic and retool Squad on the fly.

A few weeks ago, DC released the announcement video of ‘Suicide Squad Isekai‘ on their official YouTube page, an upcoming anime television series based on the famous DC Comics team of supervillains, Suicide Squad. Of course, many fans of the genre are excited about the project, which will see Warner Bros. Japan, Production I.G and Wit Studio collaboration in action. This isn’t the first time DC ventured into Japanese animation, with ‘Deadshot’ and ‘Working Through the Pain’ being among many successful projects, and it seems that the animators behind ‘Attack on Titan,’ ‘Spy x Family’ and ‘Vinland Saga’ will take on the notable DC supervillains.
This, for many unconventional, collaboration will try to attract both anime and comic book fans, and the recent Anime Expo revealed some details of the project. However, besides the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad Isekai’ anime, the series director, Eri Osada, revealed more details about some...

Will Smith has mostly played good guys or heroes in the many films that he’s led. But the megastar has very rarely portrayed a villain, which he once shared was an intentional decision on his part.
Will Smith’s villains needed to have a message Will Smith | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Smith’s movie success was carefully crafted in the beginning. While enjoying a successful run on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Smith already had a goal in mind in becoming a top movie star. To do this, he and his manager studied the top 10 grossing movies of all time back then.
“We realized that 10 out of 10 had special effects. Nine out of 10 had special effects with creatures. Eight out of 10 had special effects with creatures and a love story,” Smith once told Time.
But after Smith achieved the success he wanted, he began wanting to focus less on box-office hits and more on variety.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment tweeted a Black History Month tribute today “spotlighting some of our favorite DC characters” including Will Smith’s Deadshot, Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary and Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. Fans began responding with photos of Ray Fisher as Cyborg in Warner Bros. Justice League and sent #IStandWithRayFisher trending on Twitter.
It wasn’t long before Fisher himself chimed in, retweeting the Warners post with the message, “Or….you could try spotlighting an apology to the non-fictional Black people affected by your company’s racist and discriminatory practices.”
Warner Bros. declined comment on this latest social media post, but WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff addressed the situation last March: “Our investigator, Judge Katherine Forrest, has issued statements specifically about Walter Hamada, saying that there was no evidence of interference by Walter in the investigation. She said that the cuts made in the Joss Whedon version of Justice League were not racially-motivated.

It feels like we’ve been here before. A C-list DC Comics villain has been brought to life by a major Hollywood talent—Idris Elba as Bloodsport in this case—only to be saddled in a seemingly generic scene with the character’s adolescent daughter. When we saw a variation of this cliché in the first Suicide Squad movie, it stood in for barebones character development; a familiar story beat which allowed Will Smith’s Deadshot to prove he really just wants to make his little girl proud. But that was then, and this is now. This is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Hence when Elba’s incarcerated baddie takes a look at his daughter through prison plexiglass, and she reveals that she too has gotten pinched and is now awaiting a court date for nicking a smartwatch, he has only one question: Why did she get caught for swiping something so stupid?...

Like a lot of you, over the weekend Stephen Colbert watched “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” the epic 4-hour-long re-edit colloquially referred to as “The Snyder Cut.” And in his “The Late Show” monologue Monday, Colbert said watching it inspired him to make his own version, calling it the “#ColbertCut” that largely served as an excuse to explain the complicated licensing rights to Marvel Comics properties — and also make fun of how similar certain comic characters are to each other.
Specifically, Colbert was inspired by the post credit scene on the original 2017 theatrical release of “Justice League,” in which we learn Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) has recently escaped from prison and is now living large on a giant yacht in the middle of nowhere. Lex it seems has invited the villain Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello) to meet up and discuss the possibility of joining forces as the Legion of Doom in a sequel,...

We’ve known that Idris Elba has been attached to The Suicide Squad for the longest time, but Warner Bros. has yet to officially reveal who exactly the star is playing in James Gunn’s sequel/reboot of Task Force X. Originally, he was set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot before this was rethought and the British actor was given a new, unknown role to portray. There was one character who seemed like an obvious pick, but we’re now hearing this isn’t the case, either.
Fans had gotten used to the idea of Elba playing Bronze Tiger in the movie, as per a few rumors and reports. There was a thought that Will Smith’s return to dominance was bound to come in Suicide Squad but we saw how that one went, right. For all that Deadshot could have been a great character he was kind of overplayed and stuck in a movie that was headed nowhere quickly. Plus, without being the main focus of the movie Will Smith it was kind of hard to say that it was His movie since Margot Robbie and Jared Leto kind of took the cake so to speak. In Gemini Man however, as Jon Fuge of MovieWeb has already stated, the

One of the first major announcements regarding James Gunn’s reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad was the confirmation that Will Smith wouldn’t be returning as Deadshot, and while it was originally claimed that Idris Elba would be replacing him in the movie, it turned out that Elba was set to play a new character instead.
Along with Jared Leto, Smith is the biggest name from the original cast that isn’t returning for the follow-up, but that doesn’t mean that his time as part of the DC Extended Universe is over. Though director James Gunn has certainly been playing it coy as of late, we’re all pretty much expecting for The Suicide Squad to be a soft reboot. After all, it’s set to feature a lineup greatly differing from the one featured in the previous flick.
Still, one would think it insane to discard every character from Task Force X’s first mission on the big screen. Love it or hate it, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was a financial success and merchandising monster, with the latter owing a lot to Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. And with Will Smith not returning as Deadshot, it’d be in the studio’s best interest to retain another marquee player.
Now, this isn’t the first time Gunn has teased Harley for his movie, but any bit of reassurance certainly helps. This time, on Instagram, the Marvel/DC switch-hitter posted a...

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is expected to bring back most of the cast of David Ayer’s 2016 movie, but will also add in a few new big names. None of the rumored additions have grabbed fans’ attentions more than John Cena, though. The WWE legend has reportedly signed on to replace Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy pal Dave Bautista in the DC villain team-up film and for the first time, Cena has now responded to the rumors.
While speaking with The Wrap, he avoided either openly confirming his casting or outright denying it but instead commented that he would be “very grateful” to find a role in the film if the opportunity arose.

Last week, We Got This Covered reported that we’d heard Warner Bros. was planning to effectively reboot the DC Extended Universe. The original continuity will stand in the likes of the Wonder Woman and Aquaman franchises, but new projects – like The Batman and Supergirl – will take place in a fresh timeline that won’t connect with the old movies at all.

When Idris Elba was originally cast in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, he was supposed to replace Will Smith in the role of Deadshot. Then they decided to change the character, but we have no official information on who that character will be. Some fans have speculated that he could be playing Bronze Tiger.
According to a new report from Geeks Worldwide, Elba’s character in the film will have a daughter, and since the character does have a daughter we are left with two main choices of who he could be playing… Deathstroke or Sportsmaster.
The thing with this is, Joe Manganiello has already been cast in the role of Deathstroke and he appeared at the end of Justice League. So unless that has changed, which is a possibility, then Sportsmaster could very well be the character.
They are both two badass assassins that have strong family ties.

When James Gunn said that he’s already assembled his own version of Task Force X for The Suicide Squad, he wasn’t kidding. Not only are Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney returning as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, respectively, but we’ll also see newcomers such as John Cena’s Peacemaker and David Dastmalchian’s Polka Dot Man added to the equation. And if that weren’t enough, Guardians of the Galaxy and Walking Dead veteran Michael Rooker will play the brutish King Shark!
Another variable fans everywhere have been wondering about is that of another Marvel Cinematic Universe transplant, Idris Elba. Originally, it was said that he’d replace Will Smith as Deadshot, but then it was revealed the former Heimdall will inhabit the role of an entirely different character.
Now, thanks to podcaster Robbie Fox, we may know who that’ll be – and it’s supposedly Deathstroke.

Idris Elba is still in The Suicide Squad, but not as Deadshot. And some other familiar faces are returning, too.
Well, this should finally put a bullet in all that "The Suicide Squad is a reboot" chatter. Sure, new writer/director James Gunn will likely bring a very different tone to the proceedings than David Ayer did, and by design, most of the Suicide Squad itself is generally pretty expendable. And while it can probably generously be considered a reboot inasmuch as it doesn't overtly reference the events of its predecessor much (see how little time was given to "other" Dceu movies in Aquaman and Shazam!), it appears that Warner Bros. is hoping to at least keep a certain continuity of characters.
The plan had long been for Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller to return for the sequel.

Although Idris Elba was supposed to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” the actor will now play another character as Deadshot will no longer be featured in the movie.
Last month, it was reported that Elba would take on the role after Smith exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. He is set to begin shooting the “Bright” sequel for Netflix in July, according to an individual with knowledge of the projects, while Warner Bros. is set to begin production on the “Suicide Squad” sequel in September.
Warner Bros. had no comment.

As thrilled as the internet is by the recent news that James Gunn is back on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the filmmaker still has a whole other movie to work on first. And according to producer Peter Safran, Gunn has no intention of rushing The Suicide Squad before he gets back to his Marvel series.
That being said, the follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad may end up feeling very reminiscent of one of the director’s McU flicks, not just in its central team of oddballs and misfits, but also in its inclusion of at least one extraterrestrial character. According to a new report from Revenge of The Fans, Gunn is currently looking for an actress between the ages of 20 and 30 to play a “monstrous femme fatale.” It’s said that this “creature” will be a “surly, muscular alien woman” who’ll likely require some heavy prosthetics.

At this stage, Marvel Studios is doing a deep dive into the comics to find inspiration for who to bring to the big screen next. For instance, the upcoming Eternals movie or the reports of Shang-Chi and Nova films. No, we’re not talking about Daredevil or Luke Cage but rather, Deathlok.

The Titans just made a killer cast addition: Esai Morales will portray Deathstroke, the fan-favorite assassin and archenemy of Teen Titans leader Dick Grayson.

When Will Smith left James Gunn‘s Suicide Squad sequel, there was some question of whether or not a new actor would replace him, or if Smith’s character Deadshot would be cut. The answer came quickly, when Idris Elba took over the part. Now, we might know why. Early Suicide Squad 2 plot details reveal that Deadshot is a […]

With James Gunn aiming for the upcoming Suicide Squad film to serve as more of a relaunch than a sequel, it's been said that it will feature a cast of mostly all-new characters. There will be a few familiar members of the team returning, such as Deadshot, but you can't blame Gunn for wanting to bring a new set of reformed villains into the action. [Seemore] Although nothing…...

It’s been an eventful week for news on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and having already heard the latest updates on returning players Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Rick Flag, a new report from Collider now has some details about some of the newcomers expected to make their Dceu debuts in the upcoming film.
The article relays word of four characters who are expected to be introduced in Gunn’s flick. First on the list is Ratcatcher, who’s a man in the comics but is expected to be gender-swapped for the movie. The backstory of Ratcatcher is that she was an exterminator who became a master criminal capable of controlling small rodents. After that, you have King Shark, a humanoid shark whose father is believed to be the so-called Shark God.
Then there’s Polka-Dot Man, who grows multi-colored polka dots on his body that he can turn into fireballs and other weapons.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has replaced Will Smith with Idris Elba as Deadshot.
Well, that didn't take long.
Just a week after Will Smith bowed out of Warner Bros' Suicide Squad 2, the James Gunn written-and-directed The Suicide Squad, they've already found their replacement Deadshot. And just in case you were wondering if the star power of this movie would be diminished by Smith's departure, think again, because Variety reports that Idris Elba is stepping into Floyd Lawton's helmet.
No other casting is currently in place for The Suicide Squad, but it is generally believed that the plan was always to see Margot Robbie and Viola Davis reprise their roles as Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller alongside Smith's (now Elba's) Deadshot. With Smith gone, Elba should provide plenty of name recognition to bolster the team. Elba and Gunn now make two McU alum on Suicide...

We’ve been hearing for a while now that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will serve a soft reboot for the series that will bring in a mostly new cast, but one character that the Guardians of the Galaxy helmsman’s script had apparently planned on including was Deadshot. And with Variety reporting last night that Will Smith has exited from the role due to scheduling conflicts, it seems that Warner Bros. may be in a slightly awkward position.
Journalist Justin Kroll, who first broke the story of Smith’s departure, took to Twitter with a brief side-note, saying that execs at Warner are now deciding whether to recast the role of Deadshot or replace him with a different character entirely.

Suicide Squad 2 will have to go on without its dangerous leader.
Variety reports that Will Smith and his anti-hero Deadshot will not be returning for the sequel, set to hit theaters in 2021. Smith served as the face of the original, which also featured Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker and Viola Davis as the government official who puts the squad together.
The 50-year-old actor’s absence boils down to scheduling conflicts, according to Variety. Smith is currently filming the recently-announced Bad Boys reboot and next appears on Disney’s live-action Aladdin.

Director James Gunn is in talks to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad.
Gunn, who was fired from helming the third instalment in his Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise, was already writing the script for the sequel which Warner Bros. has slotted for an August 2021 release, reports hollywoodreporter.com.
Disney fired Gunn from his Marvel franchise in July after old tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced in which he had made insensitive and controversial jokes.
Suicide Squad revolves around villainous characters like Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences.

It’s official: The Suicide Squad is getting a fresh lick of neon paint.
With former McU director James Gunn in the driving seat and a summer 2021 release date in place, Task Force X is about to be shipped off on a brand new assignment – presumably with a different ensemble cast in tow. That raises serious question marks over the involvement of Will Smith (Deadshot) and/or Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), as we know that the latter A-lister has her hands full with DC’s Birds of Prey spinoff.
Still, in James Gunn we trust. Or should that be Zack Snyder? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the erstwhile Justice League director holds a producing credit on Suicide Squad 2 (official title: The Suicide Squad), as does his wife and long-time creative partner, Deborah Snyder.

As we reported back in October, James Gunn was not only aboard Warner Bros.’ The Suicide Squad to write, but he was also in talks to direct. The only new news today regarding the DC sequel is that the studio dated the title for an Aug. 6, 2021 release. Disney let Gunn go over the summer for his controversial Tweets (which upset the alt-right media) that predated his $1.6 billion global grossing work on Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Disney’s loss is Warner Bros.’ great gain. Charles Roven and Peter Safran are producing. Word is that the pic is a reboot with new actors and characters. The 2016 DC title grossed over $746M-plus Ww and follows a ragtag group of baddies –Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc– who are forced to work for the government in exchange for better prison sentences.

Adventures of the Super Sons #4 sees Jon Kent and Damian Wayne dealing with the strangeness of Red Kryptonite.
Let's be completely honest with each other: the Lil' Injustice Gang is an amazing idea. In Adventures of the Super-Sons, Jon and Damian are off in space battling a group of shapeshifting alien teens who have taken their inspiration from Earth's anti-Justice League in the form of kid versions of Deadshot, Joker, Lex Luthor, Captain Cold and more. As maybe the only person on Earth with a fondness for the X-Babies, this is extremely for me. Add in what we see in this preview that DC sent us - Space Cabbie! - and it only gets even more for-me than ever.
This ignores the fact that Pete Tomasi has been one of the New 52 era and beyond's unsung heroes. He penned under-the-radar classics of the era - runs on Batman & Robin,...

DC Comics' "Secret Six" (1968) is being developed as a pilot for a TV series at CBS, with showrunner Bill Lawrence ("Scrubs") working with a script by Rick Muirragui ("Suits"):
"...originally created as a team of mercenary crime-fighters by writer E. Nelson Bridwell and illustrator Frank Springer, another version of the team appeared in "Villains United" #1 (July 2005).
"Led by 'Lex Luthor', aka the mysterious 'Mockingbird', this version of the Secret Six consists of villainous characters who accept missions of dubious moral quality, including DC Comics characters 'Catman', 'Deadshot' and 'Cheshire', plus newly created 'Rag Doll' and 'Scandal Savage'.

After not realizing what they had in Supergirl by letting it go after only one season, it looks like CBS is willing to take another shot at this whole DC thing by adapting the cult favorite Secret Six for television.
You see, the project has received a pilot production commitment, as Rick Muirragui (Suits) will write and executive produce, with Bill Lawrence and Jeff Ingold executive producing via Doozer Productions. As good as Greg Berlanti has proven to be with comic book-based TV shows, I’m glad to see his name not being attached, lest he be spread too thin.
As for the plot itself, Variety says that the series “follows six morally ambiguous strangers, each with their own unique specialties and secret pasts. They are brought together by an enigmatic figure who blackmails them into working as a team to expose the corruption of the corporate and political elite.

Marvel's loss is DC's gain as James Gunn will write and direct Suicide Squad 2.
Well, well, well. James Gunn was recently removed from the director's chair of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after offensive tweets from several years back surfaced. Despite an outcry from fans (as well as members of the cast), Disney's decision was final, and Gunn was fired out of the airlock into the cold vacuum of space. Gunn moving from Marvel to DC isn't exactly a surprise, but it sure happened quickly, and the project in question is perhaps the most perfect fit for his sensibilities: Suicide Squad 2.
The first Suicide Squad movie notably tried to ape the success of Guardians of the Galaxy in its marketing and with its soundtrack, taking a random selection of classic rock tunes and throwing them over scenes seemingly at random. It...did...

Despite Suicide Squad not being the most beloved DC movie out there, it made a hefty amount of cash and even bagged itself an Oscar (for Best Make-Up), so you can bet that Warner Bros. is keen to mine Task Force X for several more films. In fact, back in 2016, one spinoff that was being planned was a solo outing for Floyd Lawton Aka Deadshot, as played by Will Smith.
Over the past two years, as the DC movie universe has undergone many creative shifts, we haven’t heard much about how the Deadshot film is getting on. In a special YouTube live chat for his 50th birthday, though, Smith himself has finally provided us with an update as to how the project’s progressing. Suicide Squad might have had an outstanding visual flavor – whatever you think about it, it won the Oscar for Best Makeup – but it’s hard to argue with the fact that its plot was riddled with as many holes as one of Deadshot’s victims. Particularly when it comes to anything to do with Jared Leto’s Joker, whose role in the movie was heavily reworked in reshoots and the editing suite.
Two years after its release, director David Ayer has now served up an explanation for one puzzling detail. The filmmaker previously established that the Joker wears grills on his teeth because Batman had smashed his dentures to pieces after the death of Robin, an event that was revealed to be part of the Dceu’s past in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

This week brought what was, for many of us, groan-inducing news that Jared Leto is reportedly getting his own solo movie as the Joker, after first appearing as the Clown Prince of Crime back in 2016’s Suicide Squad. The announcement was a perplexing one as firstly, Leto’s interpretation of the character has proven to be the most controversial to date and secondly, Warner Bros. is already working on a standalone vehicle for the Joker, the non-dceu effort likely starring Joaquin Phoenix.
So, what’s the story behind this second solo movie for Mr. J? Could WB be planning on filling out the DC Extended Universe by giving multiple Suicide Squad anti-heroes their own films? Well, as we know, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has at least three movies in development at the studio that she could star in, and there was also that Deadshot solo pic with Will Smith...

Although I love me some Batman and Justice League, I have to admit that I began to yearn for something beyond the familiarity I’d settled into in recent years when it came to the DC Universe animated films. I mean, this was the same line that brought us gems such as Green Lantern: First Flight and Wonder Woman (2009), so, as you can imagine, I was more than willing to see these folks once again broaden their horizon.
Fortunately, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay has proven to be just what the doctor ordered: An unapologetic, no-holds-barred love letter to the rougher side of DC’s pantheon that’ll appeal to diehard and casual viewers alike. Well, to be more specific, those who are of appropriate age.
