You made it real...
james-zd28 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am a little surprised at the mixed reviews for this episode, and season 8 in general, as I think this season has everything. It is complex, exciting, explosive and satisfying. It can't always be about zombies, although there are plenty of zombies in it. This final episode moves us on to a different place, with a sad and uplifting finale. I can see why people were not keen on how Neegan got his at the end, but for me this is the only way it could end and our heroes have a chance of something better, and more seasons of great stories. As Morgan says 'the only thing worth a dam is people'. Great show, brilliant.

Epic, worthwhile finale to a transitional season begging questions as to where we've been and where we're heading
jrarichards10 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Wrath" wrapped up Season 8 in a style redolent with both Biblical (and Koran???) references and others smacking strongly (visually, but also in terms of content) of "The Lord of the Rings". A surprisingly large number of loose ends ended up being tied, suggesting a kind of clean slate for what lies ahead - of course to the extent that the series's comic-book forebear can be departed from (which Season 8 teaches it indeed can).

The Season kicked off looking self-indulgent in the extreme, given that we are presumably looking at a few days or at most weeks of warfare, albeit seen from a host (!!) of different angles. That was a questionable move, but also one that revealed how TWD basically had nothing to lose at that point. And indeed no other direction to take.

A more general, recurring, time-related question for TWD concerns the amount of time that has passed since the sickness in that world erupted ... but clearly our zombie "Walkers" are now very much the worse for wear.

Yet still perhaps not as much as they ought to be!! For we are to understand that the wolves and the crows keep biting, the hurricanes keep blowing, the frosts keep freezing, the rivers keep flowing and the tide keeps ebbing and flowing, so just how long is that endless supply of even vaguely-intact dead going to remain so?

Yet "herds" go on getting larger and larger, so are the living dead capable of learning new tricks????

(Admittedly we did see one new trick from the makers "chucked in" here - that suddenly blood and guts from the zombies can prove infective, even though for 7 seasons they could not, no matter how immersed in them our heroes became. The (flimsy) excuse here is presumably that the rot has now set in so far that things that were not possible before suddenly become so - hmmmm?)

Otherwise, the Walkers are largely background to this Season's events, rightly and inevitably so. And - after all we've seen - it is hard to imagine them ever taking centre-stage again. That left a Season in which the job was to put paid to Negan and the Saviours, and that is - more or less - what we get to see, in exhaustive detail. In some sense, it's not much more than marking time, but the warfare issues at times prove interesting.

To pad that out, it was necessary to bump off a couple of key characters - impactfully enough as it turned out - while others descend into merciless, pseudo-psychopathic madness, with the question writ large then being about the possibility of return to mercy and a semblance of the old normal life; and this is as much an issue for Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan (again the absolute star of this show in some amazing, and surprisingly nuanced, performances) as it is for Andrew Lincoln's Rick (who finally makes some progress in this season, having stagnated or gone backwards in 7).

A matured Chandler Riggs as Carl does well here (as he must in the circumstances), while there are also good, now-fully-fledged performances from Khary Payton (King Ezekiel), Seth Gilliam (Gabriel the Priest), Xander Berkeley (Gregory) and - of course(!) - Josh McDermitt as the unique Eugene, who just keeps getting better!

This all proves that actors acting their interesting characters can keep us watching TWD as much as can shock value, or even a dystopia at moments compelling enough for we armchair-bound folk who never actually have to face it to relish...

Other players don't seem to do much, however, and do seem stuck in a dull groove.

Hence the chance (but also the risk) to move on, which this epsisode embodies.

Were it to prove courageous enough, TWD always had the option of moving in the direction of a more character-based, less gory, less violent "rebuilding after the dystopia" storyline a la "Survivors" (BBC), "Day of the Triffids" and so on.

And, right now, that would seem to be about the only option it has left, and this final episode of Season 8 seems to be accepting that clear truth.

I am aware of course that Season 9 is already underway, but this is the situation as seen at the end of 8, so let's not complicate things...

Mercy prevails
dipanshuagrawal-074276 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am not a big fan of granting the most hateful person mercy. But the whole season was set up to end this way. People may not like it and therefore you can see many bad reviews but I will tell you that whatever it is the wrath or the mercy.... The episode brings it in an excellent manner.

There are only 2 reasons because of which I didn't rated 10/10 1. Pretty obvious that Eugene was gonna help... We all know that it was going to happen and we were waiting for it. And the whole season was set over mercy so it was obvious that negam was not going to die. 2.This is the reason of many bad reviews that's the concluding reactions of Maggie and Daryl.

Thanks for reading this long.

A Season Finale of Closure
WeAreTheWalkingDead19 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In one of my favourite episodes in TWD's history, 'Wrath' wraps up Season Eight & the 'All Out War' storyline with great effect, giving us a Season Finale that provides plenty of closure that in a way, feels like the end of the first chapter in 'The Walking Dead's' history, & sets up the next with the appropriately titled 'A New Beginning' in Season Nine.

All pressing storylines are bought to a neat ending, the two season conflict with The Saviors has ended & Negan's reign is over with him now locked up in Alexandria.

Dwight is spared by Daryl & told to go look for his wife Sherry.

Jadis, now going by the name Anne, is welcomed into Alexandria, Morgan replaces her at the Junkyard looking to heal again after his regression back into 'Clear' Morgan after the reopening of old wounds back in Season Seven.

Rosita forgives Eugene with a nice punch.

The Savior Alden is finally accepted by Maggie at Hilltop & looks to help contribute along with the other 5 communities, to working together to build a better future.

Rick's speech after sparing Negan is a scene that I love to re-visit from time to time. His delivery accompanied by the as always fantastic work of Bear McCreary's makes it one of the best.

Finally, Rick, who after honouring him by sparing Negan, pens an emotional letter to his late son, Carl, coupled with flashback which act as a beautiful closing scene to the season & arc.

This episode, just like the season, has received a lot of negativity with people saying the show is dead (already proven wrong) & describing it as the worst thing they've ever seen. Personally I think that this couldn't be further from the truth. I've seen that one of the big complaints is that the war ended with a bit of a flop as there was no final 'epic' battle. Again I feel that another battle, (of which there had been so many of throughout the season, and which was a big source of people's complaints already), was unnecessary to end the war. All Out War wasn't just the ending, it was the battles we've had all season long, the toing and froing between the communities & The Saviors. A final battle to end all battles wasn't needed, instead the war ended thanks to a character's finally selfless actions, not that of a gun's, after deciding what side was the greater good.

This Finale also helped to give a lot of potential for future season's of the show in terms of the direction of the storyline, which inevitably didn't disappoint with Season's Nine's first 5 episodes which is one of my favourite story arc's in the show & was eventually continued after Rick's departure.

One of my favourite episodes in TWD's history, the end to a hard fought war, & the start of a new beginning.

So, Eugene is the great man of the season! Maybe not! Absolutely nobody fires their weapons before the final war? But, otherwise, Negan would win.

This is my first rewiew for my fav show. Just glad that this season is finally over!!the only good thing about this episode is that the writers didnt erase major charcters for viewership boost. All the nonsense actions and stupid reactions are over.I'm really looking forward to angela kang taking over the show.I hope she could revive the show.Gimple really ruined this sjow for me for using filler storyarcs and pointless deaths. My rating for this episode is 7 bcuz everything could have gone much much better.and my rating for season 8 is 6.

a disappointing ending but has moments that save him from being mediocre
MomentIMDB13 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The saviors first appeared in the sixth episode of the sixth season, 43 episodes since their first episode. to be the end of the war it was disappointing and it was not comforting enough. The direction of the episode was good. I loved the deceit plan and it was well managed. The episode builds everything for the final battle. I loved seeing Rick and the others cornered, the tension was very great. I liked that eugene changed sides but it was not previously developed. the final battle felt more the massacre of the saviors than a hand-to-hand battle. I loved the fight between Rick. Rick must have suffered an injury just like in the comics. I loved the final speech and Maggie's reaction was very good. Dryl expelling Dwight was a pessimistic idea and a great nonsense. Daryl was very poorly developed and a very wasted character and one of the worst of the season. Missing scene of people in Alexandria rebuilding it. I wish there was a scene all eating like at the end of the first episode of the seventh. I loved the reference of Carl. the eighth season was the worst of all, my score would be 7.3 out of 10. the hatred that people have with this season were four quite related factors. the first factor was the great disappointment that was the war, the battles were loose and were only shots. The second factor was the nonsense. in previous seasons there were but in this all losn

The New World Begins
ThomasDrufke16 April 2018
To me, it's always intriguing to watch a show that is so divisive yet still so beloved make some really bold choices. The Walking Dead has either gone out of its way to make bold choices or make the audience feel like they are avoiding making the bold choices over the years. It's often difficult to determine what the exact direction this show is going to take. With that said, tonight's episode felt like the show wanted to make a bold statement at the end of an era, but still didn't have the guts to really change the course of the show.

Let's start with the obvious thing to note which is that no one of note actually died in this episode. Sure, perhaps it's not like any character needs to go, but it's certainly something this show has made a note to do every year at the end. Plus, I don't read the comics or anything, but I'm pretty sure from what I read that more people perish during All Out War than shown on the show.

But putting that aside, I was a bit mixed on this finale. On one hand, it's a fascinating thing that the show did decide to keep Negan alive, like in the comics. To me, it just didn't seem like something that would make sense for the show to do. I love the Rick/Negan dynamic and I think it opens the door for more of this next year, but I still find it strange that we have to deal with more Negan in coming seasons. Much like Negan, Eugene is someone who I never wanted to be redeemed, especially after the 78th time he had a chance to escape last week. With that said, it's nice to see that he at least did something good to help the Survivors for once. But i truly don't care for that character anymore.

Was it just me or did the final fight seem a little bit anticlimatic as well. I get it, it's supposed to be surprising seeing it all end so quickly and Negan be betrayed. But i was just expecting a little more. But it was pretty powerful to see Rick turn to the crowd of both Saviors and his own people and give that speech, amidst the wrath coming from Maggie. Which, speaking of brings another dynamic to next season. Maggie, Jesus, and Dary planning to show Rick that they need to kill Negan? Do we really need that subplot next season? Like seriously? And how does this make any sense for Jesus to be involved with?

On a slightly side note, I loved that Dwight didn't meet his end and was allowed to drive off (essentially into the sunset) and look for his wife who left the Sanctuary over a year ago. That was a really touching moment for a character who has gone through so much in such a short period of time on the show. We will miss you Austin Amelio, but I'm sure glad that you got your own sort of happy ending.

I'm not sure what sort of direction the show goes next year, but I'm looking forward to seeing the changes that are made. Heck, I guess they did lose one character, that being Morgan. I did tune into his crossover and I think he definitely deserved a better send off than the one he got (but really didn't get). But even knowing that, it sure looks like both shows in this universe are taking an entirely different approach to their respective seasons, and I can't really argue with that.

Almost entirely but not quite satisfying
asimov7245518 April 2018
I don't understand why the reviews are dominated by the 1/10 iconoclasts and the 10/10 sycophants. Neither group can write a review I'd trust. I notice the IMDb ratings tend to support the sycophants, however. I gave the season finale an eight because it was the conclusion (praise be!) of all out war. I didn't give it a nine because it failed to provide closure. I'll be terribly disappointed if I ever see Negan again. I want him gone. Out of the picture. I don't want him hanging over this series like a sword of Damocles. I thought the introduction of the new subplot was rather ham-handed and could have been introduced more slowly and with better grace in the first few episodes of season nine. I didn't give this episode a lower episode a lower score because I liked the clever way Eugene found redemption. Everybody knew Oceanside would help Hilltop eventually but I wondered how helpful they could be armed only with pointy sticks. Now I know. Nobody died that I didn't want to die. For eight seasons the survivors of the zombie apocalypse have been living off the corpse of collapsed society, eating their canned goods and burning their remaining gasoline. I would really like to see a period of relative peace in which the survivors apply their ingenuity to improved their standard of living and make the world better for generations to come. I keep wondering when the instinct to propagate is going to kick in. To the iconoclasts out there I suggest you save yourself a lot of grief and anxiety and stop watching the show, but if you do and feel compelled to write a review, do us all a favor and offer something a little more substantial than "the show stinks and I hate everyone in it."

This episode was brilliant. I loved the episode. Eugenes bullet twist was awesome. The defeat of the saviors is my favorite episode in the walking dead. It should've ended the series. Still most of the plot points were wrapped up here, this probably could have been the series finale. Or it could've ended when the group arrived at alexandria.

Disappointed
imrebel2116 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode did give us a decent resolution to a season long conflict. However one scene again showed us how poorly written this show is written. Maggie is now going to rebel against rick? Jesus and Daryll on board with Maggie's rebellion? Maggie's anger for negan being kept alive is understandable but rebellion over a discussion with rick one of her close friends? Jesus being ok with a plan that with lead to more killing after a full season of preaching saving lives? And daryll being pissed at rick for sparing negan after he himself just spared Dwight and set him up to go find his wife? A 30 second scene with enough flaws to topple an entire franchise. I am continually disappointed by this shows choices.

Maybe I'm just the kind of "idiot" the writers were hoping for, but I loved the finale. It provided a much needed sigh of relief. After watching most of their plans fail, hating Eugene, and pretty much expecting the worst possible things to happen, they finally let something good happen. And the lead into fear the walking dead with Morgan was amazing! I've loved every minute of this show from the very beginning, but this is by far my favorite episode.

A redemption
alexryn16 April 2018
This is what it is - a redemption. Not only did I enjoy this episode very much I also figure out for myself the main problem with 7 and 8 seasons - it's two freaking seasons instead of one. Everything would have worked so much better! EVERYTHING "Oh no, but how would we be able to kill so many main characters in just one season?" You can and you should have! It would have worked better! It would be so much more spectacular, the drama would have overflow along with action and thriller! Yeah, you would have to cut something out, but maybe, just maybe, it would be exactly all the cringe-worth stuff and far-fetched stuff. I personally love all the reflection and emotions heroes have to go through. But the weakest part of the late Walking Dead is bad directing and writing for the most episodes since there weren't enough substance to fill them with! By the end of this finale however I was overjoyed by how lots of lines was completed (that of Rick, Morgan (in this story), Eugene, even bloody Oceanside(!)) And suddenly I figured out that many of those lasted throughout not one but two seasons - that's why the season 7 finale was such a shit storm. Without this slowness the absence of Maggie's pregnancy traces wouldn't bug me at such extent. All in all, well-done episode, finally a decent finale. My hope in better Walking Dead is as of now resurrected.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay. I have been giving this show a 1 and 2 the last two seasons and for good reason. But tonight was better. Good but not great. Close but not yet. I would've gave this episode an 8 but couldn't based on the mysterious glass hanging from a tree! Seriously?! And the fact that the director had to point the camera at the glass and then Ricks hand like we didn't know already that that's what rick used to cut Negans throat who miraculously didn't die. And we suppose to believe that Maggie and Jesus and Daryl are going to turn against Rick? That makes no sense especially from Jesus's point of view Let's hope the writing and directing is better in season 9.

Confused
warrcameron18 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was brilliant. I enjoyed it thoroughly and felt a great sense of scale and momentum in the episode. I thought the Eugene trick was very well done too. Then... the last 15 minutes came. Maggie, Jesus and Daryl in a rebellion against Rick?! This honestly has just ruined everything the season was working towards. At first I was disappointed Rick asked for Negan to be saved, but then I understood for the direction of the story. But then for Maggie, who has known Rick from the start to turn on him, Jesus - a guy who has been against killing needlessly, and has sometimes frustrated audiences due to his uneccesary approach to SAVING THE SAVIOURS INSTEAD OF KILLING THEM. But now?! He is willing to go against Rick because Maggie wishes Negan should die? He was literally just preaching to Morgan THIS EPISODE that killing doesn't have to be the only way?! And Daryl . Daryl being Ricks number one, there from the very beginning, his right hand man. Now is turning against Rick, and siding with Maggie because he thinks Negan shouldn't have been spared too? - WHEN HE LITERALLY JUST SPARED DWIGHT LIKE TEN SECONDS AGO? If this "rebellion" just involved Maggie then maybe I could buy it. Because she's still grieving from Glenn. But I find it very hard to believe that Jesus would go against his own principles, and Daryl against a man that's been a brother to him. This has just completely got rid of any sense of credibility for these characters to me, and sometimes I wonder whether the writers have forgotten the last 8 seasons and have scrapped all character development and put all characters on a blank canvas.

It was a great episode, and I thought this show was back on track, but with this new plot I seriously worry for the future of the show. Once again one step forward two steps back. This plot is ridiculous, and it hasn't even started yet .

So What Did We Learn Tonight?
sevenlilxenos16 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Wrath wrapped up Season 8 and the closure felt a bit contrived and anticlimactic, but was well acted and executed. The cross over felt rushed and I would have preferred just a hint of Morgan's next journey and let Fear pick up on the rest the following week but it is what it is and was what it was.

Pro: Psycho Morgan fading in and out of reality and Jesus helping him to find a moral balance, Eugene's bullet hijinx highlighting his continued ball growth ala the Cowardly Lion on the Wizard Of Oz finally finding his courage, competing battle strategies, Father Gabe car jumping and sucker punching, Last time for Negan whistle, Rosita saving Eugene and getting puke paybacks, Negan being made example of how not to rebuild society, Dwight's pardon.

Con: Just lock up Gregory (guess he pissed off someone), Shane's crying baby, Water Women showing up the worst non-surprise ever, Mags histrionics like no one else lost a loved one shes gotta let pizza boy go like she did her sisters and father, Not enough Daryl they could have used him more (ie Negan getting an arrow thru his head while Rick was down), wretched Rick speeches (yawn), Dwight looking more like the real Jesus than Hippy Jesus.

Con-Con: member Coral? Yea I member, how couldn't I as TWD felt it necessary to shove him down our throat ad infinitum through out the entire finale, start to finish.

not that bad really
alllieemcm17 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There are a lot of thing people can talk about this episode but all those really low rating are being a little unfair. It was not that bad. To start, I actually enjoy this episode, yes, people were waiting for some miracle battle but I fount it good what eugene did, because it was his way to redeem himself and if you think about it, after all this episodes, there was no way of people to win against Negan if is plan worked.

I fu--ing loved Rick, Meggie did lost Glenn but Rick, he freaking lost his wife and son and his daughter is always in danger, but still he was able to look over that, see Carl's point of view and fight for what comes after instead of doing things with a hot tempered and regret later. He saved Negan but in my opinion, thats exactly what he should have done. No regrets.

I heard a lot of people saying that Meggie was going to die in this finale, I can't believe it didn't happen, was actually hyped fot that. Her scene was not to cry for, was not sad or touching. "He killed Glenn." No shit bish. The only thing I get from that scene was her annoying accent, for gods sake, just stop it.

Dwight deserved to live and stay with the other but ofc, Daryl had to come and act like a petty little child. He can also die, at this point I couldn't care less.

And Jesus, really? you just go with the plan with Meggie? After making all those little speechs about not killing... you more like Judas....

Sorry for this rant, but I just want them dead because I don't give two f---s for most of them.

Bye, you back stabbing bishes. I will stay by ricks and michonnes side.

Finally the Rick/Negan war is over!
ohmap-977-66481016 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Season seven started with a startling episode revealing a new bad guy called Negan. The first episode with him was excellent, but the writing from that point on tended to be too tame for my taste. Season eight continued to drag this war out to the point of being ridiculous. However, here we are at the end of this particular arc and I for one am glad they passed that bridge.

I enjoyed this episode, but felt the battle was a bit too rushed, and for all the build-up to the final battle, it ended rather fast. However, there were surprises for me. I did not expect Eugene to betray Negan. When Rick sliced Negan's throat, I thought that was the end of Negan, but Negan is like a cat with nine lives! Low and behold, there was a doctor there to patch him up just in the nick of time. As some have said in past critiques, Maggie and company can shoot a zombie at a 100 yards right between the eyes, but miss Negan and company at about 50 feet away!

This whole episode ended with Rick and Negan going hand to hand combat. As some have said, Rick asked Negan for about 10 seconds of his time to justify Negan not killing him , and Negan allowed it. About second 7, Rick slices Negan's throat! Here is what I got from that, at the moment that Rick sliced his throat, I think Negan was about to surrender. Some may disagree, but I think he was tired of the war at that moment and wanted it to end. The punishment they wanted to give Negan was to show him that his method of forced labor was wrong, and they were going to allow him to live (albeit in a prison) to see that happen.

Maggie wanted vengeance for the killing of Glen! She screamed out in anger to let him die, but the group chose to let him live. This seems to have created a schism in the community. Some side with Maggie, and others side with Rick and Michone. This also represented a surprise "to me." I never thought Meggie would ever go against Rick, but evidently Jesus, and Daryl are on board with her for next season.

In this season, we saw some new people come on board: the well dressed, educated woman named Barbie, and somebody who obviously has access to a helicopter, but those are mysteries for next season. What will become of Jadis? Did she join Rick's group?

This season did not end with a cliff hanger or the war continuing...and for that I thank the writers for ending this battle. It seems the Walking Dead is now moving on to a new, and hopefully a better action filled season. I do look forward to finding new things, people, and obstacles for Rick and company.

I hated to see Morgan go, but if any of you watched Fear the Walking Dead immediately after this season finale, they got a treat. Brother it was GOOD. It was what the Walking Dead used to be before all of these wars. I would give it a 10 which is higher than the finale of season 8 of the Walking Dead.

I will comment on that show on it own IMDB location. It was great!

Final word: I'm glad that Daryl let Dwight go free without killing him. I actually grew to like the character. He was just trying to stay alive, but Negan was running the show. I hope he can find his lovely wife again, and they can live happily ever after. Time after time he could have betrayed Rick's group, but he didn't when he had a choice. Tara could be dead, but Dwight led the others off so she would be safe. He was not the enemy. Even when Negan found out he betrayed him, Dwight did not squirm around like a coward, but accepted that he would die, so he would die like a man. Dwight was a survivor in a hard world. The episode ended with Dwight riding up to a house and finding a card written. I did not read the words, but Dwight seemed happy.

I wish the series continued success, but I'm glad the war is over! I have been as honest as I can with my ratings, I don't believe any show this season was below a 6. I believe for fans it is worth the time to keep watching.
