Bottle episode at its finest
royalewithcheese202015 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A lot of episodes that don't have much going for them in terms of a progressive story-line (the episode 'Fly' from "Breaking Bad", for example) often get a bad rep for being "boring" or "filler episodes". The best part of this episode, just like that episode of Breaking Bad, was that it allowed the main characters to reflect on the past and relate it to their current situations. It was far from boring to me. Much of this episode is about hashing out decisions the characters have made up until this particular point. This episode was a very rich character piece (at least for this family) and ended on a very emotional note. The Miguel and Madison characters really stand out with all that is going on. The amount of respect we are meant to feel for them "as outsiders" to the family. This episode makes me think they will be bigger characters in the future of this show, or else the writers wouldn't have given the characters this amount of attention.

For me, the whole waiting room aspect was very realistic too. I am a 23 year old male, but I vividly remember exactly what a hospital waiting room is like from when I was about 12. My grandpa had been sick from lung cancer for awhile and was basically on life support. My grandma, who I was very close with, along with my mom and aunt (whom I'm still very close with), and my uncle, brother and cousins were all there at this critical time. In fact, my grandpa's fate ran into the early hours of Christmas morning, and we decided together, as a family, that it was time. My grandma really had the final say, but it's still amazing to me how we reached that decision, as a family. It's amazing how important family is to us in the end. Then my grandma died 2 years later unexpectedly, which gave me an even totally different perspective on life and death.

Anyway, this episode just really reminded me of how crazy life can be, and how this show can relate to anyone, at any time. It reminded me to not forget to love and keep loving the ones you love or once loved in your life. Toby and Kate's baby is just the next story of life in this wonderful show. Great writers, great acting (Mandy really owns it again too). 9/10.

The Waiting Room (#3.15)

Warning: Spoilers
The whole family waiting for Kate was a good episode. So much tension while they all just want to know what is happening with Kate. Miguel being the outsider was a nice part. Especially his little game and how her friend gave him the doll to pass on to her. Now I wonder if that baby will be fine.

I think I'm gonna give this one to the director

There were so many "moments" in this from the outlet face to the best friend doing her job. I was in tears for most of the latter half but the genuine humanity (and a little humor tossed in) totally drew me in. This was my favorite episode of the series. Thank you

Most obnoxious family ever
interestingstuff29 September 2022
So we are supposed to admire, sympathize with and adore this family (Pearson family) but they make it extremely difficult with how obnoxious, selfish and entitled they keep acting in each episode. There is not a single member in the entire Pearson family that is not a spoiled brat who is extremely annoying.

In this episode their annoyingness reaches new levels as they raise hell in the hospital, treating doctors and nurses like dirt and fighting amongst themselves constantly while waiting to hear what happened to Kate and her baby.

Is this story of a loving admirable family or a story of a bunch of obnoxious annoying entitled people who constantly fight and bicker about everything?

Wait for the last 6-7 minutes

This episode may seem boring or some kind of repetitive speech. Ok, not adding anything but out of point conversations inside Pearsons family.

Everything changes at the end, it becomes touchy, sensitive, deeply intriguing. You will lose more than a tear, I can assure that to you.

That's why my rate is 8, nothing happens until the end.

Family Fatigue
Hitchcoc28 April 2024
First of all, to all those who think they are writing a review when they put down one sentence, "This was boring," you have not written a review; you have shown how lacking in imagination you are. Whether you like something or don't, at least take the time to write specifically. This episode takes all the principle characters, throws them together in a tense situation, and lets the chips fall. It is enough that they spend like 13 hours waiting to see what happens. They come in with all their baggage. Beth and Randall have just had a fight about her teaching and their family dynamics. Kevin is drinking again and he has now lied to Zoe twice. Miguel is being left out. Rebecca is reliving the night Jack died while she went to a vending machine to get a candy bar. I have spent a lot of time in waiting rooms with friends and family members, and a calm voice is helpful. It is interesting that Madison is the only calm voice and she is normally the most scatterbrained. I have to say that I felt fatigue myself when this ended.

Boring!!!
jher-2343516 March 2019
This was a terrible episode. One hour of mostly bickering and being hostile toward their family, friends, and whoever happened to get in their way at the moment. This is not how a family reacts in a crisis. This is not entertainment. This is an anxiety provoker, that makes me wonder why I am watching this program. This should really have been a two minute episode.

This was an hour of rolling my eyes back.

Overall, the episode was good. What I have a problem with is so much drama coming from the family not being told anything about how Kate is doing. I have been a nurse for 30 years. I can not imagine telling a concerned, anxious, fearful family member, known family member, no HIPPA violations "the Doctor will talk to you when he can" and not give any information? not even vital signs or pain status? I don't know which was more unrealistic.. the nurses' apathy or the family's reluctance to demand more info. All these concerned family members and no one demanded to see the Nurse Manager? I know it was night shift, or Administrator on call?

Otherwise, the Miguel & Madison thing was sweet. the Kevin & Zoe thing still keeps us going, and seeing little Jack made me cry

Very disappointing
jamison06017 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This show is far above this cheap, formulaic, over done premise. Put a group of people in tight quarters for too long and see what happens. What happens is completely predictable. This has been done over and over, and again, this show is (overall) way too good to fall back on such an over done tactic. We already know how incredibly self centered and selfish Randall and Kevin are. How many more times can Randall disappoint Beth? Their storyline needs a serious shakeup. What also made this episode so infuriating was...where was Toby? Is it realistic that in 24 hours no one had any contact with him? Would he have not come out to the waiting room to give them an update? He also wouldn't have gone into surgery with Kate. So where was he? This just made no sense. One of the most cringe worthy episodes of the past 3 years.

Writing is this episode's weakness
astonmatters5 May 2019
This is a TV/movie trope we are very familiar with: the main characters stuck in a place together, coming to terms with things. However, in order for it to work, the writing has to be impeccable, since the setting relies mainly on dialogue. Unfortunately, writing is this episode's biggest weakness: flat, unimaginative, unrealistic and even cheesy at times. Sad to see this not working out, especially because This is Us indeed has the actors to pull an episode like this off.
