It's so popular
ksecret24 February 2018
This movie is so popular for female teen in Indonesia. They hyped about it since the trailer was out. It's maybe to cringey and cheesy for adults, but the promise of seeing a good looking playboy who gives riddles and pick-up lines and looks like he cares nothing but their relationship is what makes them fall head over heels for Dilan.

The technical problem is how the setting not arranged effectively so it doesn't feel nostalgic enough for those who had lived trough 1990s. I even see cars from 2016-2017ish. And I think the girl protagonist may have to advance her acting skill too.

Not your generic Love story
rinaldibee1 February 2018
So i just found out about this movie a week before its release. I've read the books, the first and second (the main story) and i really liked it (the books), and I'm really curious how they are going to cramp 2 worth of novel to a moviel, and boy i didn't expect it to be an adaptation of the FIRST book only.

First of all, the name Dilan has been very popular for the last 2 months in my country, the book itself was huge in selling and i believe 3/4 teenagers in Indonesia ranging from 13 to 24 have read the book so it is really well known. I went to watch it with my friends and we all agree that some books should not be adapted to the big screen.

The Plot

While some may disagree, i think the movie has no plot whatsoever. Yes i know, it needs to stay faithful to the novel, but not like this. It's not a story, it's a compilation of the main character's struggle to capture the heroine's heart, it has some up and down but not a conflict, no conclusion. You felt nothing, not a single accomplishment when you're finally done with the movie. Instead of doing a very close adaptation to the novel, i think the movie will be more interesting if they cramp 2 novel to a one long a*s movie, because they would have a Conflict and a Resolution to the conflict, or even better? They make it a TV series (i know the quality of some Indonesian TV shows but the recent one from NET is better). The point is, they want to milk this movie, getting the most out of it, even if they make something this ridiculous, teenagers and the novel's fan would still see it.

The characters

Okay, let me get this straight, I'm not a hater of Dilan's actor as some Indonesia male teen are, but i think he's not fit to play Dilan, not because of his acting (it's okay) but for his charm. Dilan in the book is neither ugly nor handsome but this guy? Some of female teenagers in the cinema was literally screaming in awe when he get his games out (which i don't like, pls don't be that person). He is too attractive to play Dilan and i know exactly why they picked him, well how to attract female teenagers to watch it? The same formula works vice versa for Milea's actress, but i have no qualm about it because she is supposed to be beautiful. The only thing i dislike about her actress is the way she act, i think it was just a little off and sometimes you will cringe on her acting, but meh, it was probably just me.

Overall

The cheesyness of the dialogue may be too hard to receive when it's your first time seeing Dilan in action (not reading the novel), but bear with it so your gf can be happy, some readers of the novel may understand (especially if you're a male) that the feel you get when reading and watching is different, so if first timers find the movie too cheesy to watch, try the novel, you'll understand why i like it more. The movie itself i think were pretty enjoyable, depends on what kind of person you are. If you're looking for a sweet romance about a girl and boy i think this movie will be enjoyable for you. But if you're looking for a deeper stories or a conflict of some kind that needs a resolution, don't bother watching it. Me personally, i kinda enjoy it because it's really faithful to the novel, but kinda disappointed too because it was the kind of movie that you'll forget when eating dinner after watching it.

Good but predictable.
slytherinserpent27 June 2019
This movie is the most iconic romcom of my generation in Indonesia, as many people from all ages know it and people love to quote Dilan's famous pick-up lines in daily life. In my opinion as a teenager, this movie is cute and funny, but very cheesy and predictable. I like Dilan's character, he's funny and unique but his pick-up lines are so cringey and overrated. As for Milea the female lead, her character is pretty boring and such a typical damsel in distress. Also, the book is better than the movie.

A Romantic Love Story based on Best Seller Novel by Pidi Baiq
walukowmarianne31 March 2018
This is probably the most popular movie in 2018. Since the movie release on cinemas at Jan 25th 2018, it's been trending on the social medias and everyone been talking about this movie. Like the title, this movie set in 1990, where Dilan met Milea in high school. The cheesy but sweet romantic words from Dilan to Milea are ones of the movie highlights. Iqbaal Ramadhan and Vanesha Prescilla are success to potray Dilan and Milea, their chemistry in this movie are really convincing. Iqbaal whose been underestimated before, can prove that he is the right one for Dilan character. Lots of people from different generation are really enjoy the movie. It is the movie that you can watch repeatedly and never get sick of. Me personally have watched this movie 5 times and some people even have watched more than 30 times. Isn't that sick? No wonder why this movie gets approx 6,3M viewers in less than 3 months. And even it is already out from the Indonesian cinemas, some of the "Dilanisme" (Dilan fans) still manage to put the movie back in cinema and watch it again. Dilan 1990 has captured a lot of people hearts. And i hope it will happen again in the next Dilan movie, Dilan 1991. I just can't wait.

Bring back my high school memories
LDRmuffin11 November 2018
The emotion in this movie is so strong. It begins with some cheesy/sweet talk between Dilan & Milea, and ends up with strong love connection. The costumes & color cinematography are inline with the background year. This is a cute movie that makes you recall your memories about your first love and school friends. Simple yet heartwarming :)

An incredible experience.

This movie captures the soul of the times perfectly. Considering the resources available it could not have executed better. Source material is also amazing, and actors bring characters to life perfectly. Especially Vanesha Prescilla's performance is outstanding. Definetly reccomend watching it. Dilan is my favorite friend.

Not AADC (Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?)
GaawiinMashiNinibaasiin11 September 2020
Never read the novel and been hearing the hype. I finally found it on Netflix. The acting of Dilan character is very bad. This character is already a stalker (creepy). Add bad acting, unnatural speaking tone (what teenager speaks that way?!) into the mix and you end up with a creepy stalker instead of a charming rebel. Other than this, the story telling is a drag, not engaging. I tried to enjoy this movie but it's so bad that I couldn't justify the time I spend (read: waste) to watch it. I don't recommend it.

The Viral Word
adesunandar27 March 2018
This movie have a lot of romatic word and goes viral in indonesian's teen and all indonesian netizen. the Dilan character I think he plays good and make me think that I really wanna be people like him. The strong character in Dilan really inspire me, and the chemistry between Dilan and Milea is really sweet. sometimes I feel like cringe and laugh and sometimes I feel like I was in high school.

when I see bandung 1990, I got problem here, I see a lot of modern building there and modern cars althought that was a lot off 1990's car too.

the fighting scene over all is good, and I feel really angry when I see Milea was slapped by Adnan.

Different than other Indonesian movies
mymonstersis_angora20 February 2018
I never really liked Indonesian movies, because in 10 movies chances are only 2 of them are good. This movie, however, is different! I didn't read the book (but planning to, soon), and I agree that the flirting is kinda cheesy, but it will grow on you. It feels like meeting a new person, at first you were like "what the...?" and then "oh...." and then "aww...." (maybe because I'm a woman, my husband on the other hand, laughed all the way during screening)

The trailer of this movie is misleading, they do not show you what you'll love about the movie. Many people (including me) scoffed at the trailer, but when I watched the movie it's different.

The main character, Dilan, is played by a famous Indonesian actor. He was a former kids boyband Coboy Junior member. Which is why a lot of people doubted his acting skill, including me. But boy was I wrong.. He's a perfect fit for the character, the way he talks, the way he moves, looks really natural.

Overall, I like this movie. I took my mom and family to the cinema and they love it. A lot of my mom's friends watched this movie too, to remind them of how beautiful their high school romances were.

This movie is really bad in all aspect..
royshaelendra13 September 2018
First of all..this movie is a financial success. Very popular in Indonesia. And that makes me think..are Indonesians really that dumb? Ok..what's the positive thing about this movie? The acting from the female lead is decent..and she's easy on the eyes. Other than that..none. The story is so cheesy and the male lead is so unlikable I wanna punch him in the face! And the dialogues..urghh. After halfway of the movie I got out from the theater to smoke a cigarette for like 15 mnts. I just dont care about what happen next or the ending. This movie is trying so hard to be the next 'Ada Apa Dengan Cinta'..and failed miserably. Please just stay away from this garbage..

Quick critique
nazhifahhu8 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have a lot to say about this movie. I want to start by saying i have loved the book soooo much, even though i will say that the kind of guy like dilan is not that they dont exist. They exist, but maybe theyre just hard to find. But because i live in reality i somehow find guys like dilan a bit cliche but in the same time its understandable why people glorify him.

I will start by talking about the appropriateness aspect of the characters.

-Dilan fits perfectly as dilan figuratively, but whats lacking from him is that he is not at all calm in the movie, when he should actually be calm most of the time. To me he talks too fast as if hes anxious and he lacks in expression, gesture, and body language. Its as if the only thing that fits the actor of being dilan is that he HAD potential, but all of them were not portrayed when hes being dilan. But like i said, he had the full potential.

-Milea, the actress suits her perfectly and her acting is good, body language and expression is good, all are good, except for the fact that shes somehow a bit more mature than the milea in book. But overall shes very nice.

-other characters are ok EXCEPT milea's friends, in which they are all equally beautiful that its confusing if someone didnt read the book before watching the movie, cause the main reason milea is liked by dilan and other guys is because shes pretty and charming(not something that i would glorify to be honest, but thats just how the story is), but if you watch the movie you can see that milea's close friends are pretty as her also that its confusing why milea is even "the chosen one" in the movie

Now going on to the movie, they do it almost perfectly in fitting whole scenarios from the book into a movie and thats a part everyone should love. Whats lacking, though, is

-the flow of the conversation. Some conversation that can actually bring audience more emotionally dont get shown, i believe its because they felt it would be cringe to show it in movie, when actually it has lot of potential in making the audience get deeper into the characters. Its honestly big loss. Lesser but deeper is better than more but superficial.

-the slowing down of the movie. Seriously, everything is too fast. Its so fast that it becomes not okay. What i mean when i say fast is not that the movie phase is fast, because that is fine, but its another thing when you just leave expressions and body language to make the movie, and make everyone just constantly yell at each other as the way on telling the plot. Its really not okay cause it makes it feel like everyone is just mad at each other all the time and theyre intimidating. The only actors and actresses i found good in having the movie formed nicely are mostly adults-they speak slow and have natural gestures that makes it as if its just reality. And thats one thing every character in movie should do. The one that has to be the calmest and the most talented at this should be dilan, partially because hes from bandung and bandung people are soft and calm in talking, the other reason is that its one of his trait to be calmer than others, yet hes the most who talk fast and have it as if he memorized everything before he said something. Hes the most unnatural and rushing

-additional background. I dont need to say anything more. When dilan stood in that telephone box to talk to milea, they shouldve had to sometimes show other people, be it his friends riding bikes or something. Cause if he just did that without additional background it would seem like hes just a creep waiting along to just call her all by himself, cause he has nothing else to do but that. When those gangsters raged at their school they shouldve shown Pak Suripto ordering security to close the gate. Cause without that, no one understands why the gate is automatically just sealed and why these raged students didnt just decide to break in

-plot holes. Plot holes are very very less, its plausible. i just found one by far (i watched half way through) and it is when milea called dilan when in fact dilan didnt get phone in his house and he should always go to telephone box. In which it means like ???? How can she call him if he doesnt have telephone number?

SUMMARY: My complain is just basically on how milea's friends shouldnt be that pretty so it becomes clear why she stands out, and how this movie lacks Pictures Telling Story. At this rate it is really just all expressionless dialogues. Thats all.

I salute everyone involved in this movie though. This is just my opinion and critique.

OVERRATED
Nana_9917 December 2023
I watched this film about four years ago and dared to voice criticism this year. I think this film is seriously overrated. The acting of the two main characters is very stiff. There were many comments from people who thought the same as me that the main actor's speaking intonation when delivering dialogue seemed artificial or unnatural, as did the main actress. I'm still confused about why the main actor was nominated in the best actor category. Sorry if I'm presumptuous.

One more thing, the depiction of the 90s setting is really not visible. From clothes to hairstyles it looks very modern. Despite all that, I can still be a little entertained by this film, even though it's mostly uncomfortable.
