It was a joy to watch.
cayman_brown18 February 2019
Stylistically, narratively-I was truly thrilled by it. I think the performances were so strong, it's so beautifully produced, and refreshingly original. I think I might just read the comics during the hiatus-because if there's any logic in the world, we'll see a second season, and more thereafter.

A superb season finale, leaving us with wanting more
Holt34426 February 2019
The season finale takes us from the last day to the end of the world and it doesn't let down one bit. Incredible drama tied up nicely with great editing and visual effects, really doing a great job at capturing their powers visually. The actors that plays the siblings all has such great chemistry, making us not doubting one second the story of all 7 siblings.

The ensemble cast is just so well picked, everyone doing a great job and making them realistic as possible, it's still a superhero show. At first I didn't know if I would enjoy it as it's very weird but funny but it keeps things fresh and original from other superhero shows. The writing are actually great, giving us a character driven story with one thing we knew, Number five's goal to stop the apocalypse and it's one hell of a ride. The soundtrack is just amazing, so many good songs that flows so well with the action sequences and just random hilarious scenes that we got.

Great series with twists
Lanting17 February 2019
I love time travel and super heroes and my wife tolerates watching both with me. This combines those both and adds in a very dysfunctional family with a robot mom and a talking monkey.

We both really liked this series and watched it in two nights.

My question is....

Will there be another season?

Great Series. Instantly want the next!

Flew through all 10 episodes over the weekend. 100% set up for Series 2 and I cant wait. Great performances all round but special mention to a really special break out performance from Aidan Gallagher who I expect we will all be seeing much more of.

Very highly recommended and hoping for a very quick turnaround on Series 2.

A great series (SPOILERS FOR THE COMIC NOT THE SERIES... TOLD HOW THE COMIC END UP)

Warning: Spoilers
It was a great series. If u would imagine a family of peolpe with powers, this is how it would look like. The single con I got for this series is that they didn't kept the comics end. The comics' end is five shoot the white viollin in the head... not like the series' kid end. The actors was great and that kid... come on, he really seems to have 58 years... he plays too good

So...
EpimetheusA120 March 2019
I would have loved to see more of Allison's ability. This show was well written and full at times but there was a lack of scenes with the main characters using their super powers. Hopefully season 2 will change that.

Addictive but predictable
sunbeamsfairy17 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As it goes , this series has been great to watch. I binged it with my daughter across the weekend. Its refreshing in a series adaptation like this , you can get a good insight into the characters. They all have differnt personalities and work together well but sometimes gets a bit cheesy. The time travel didnt get to confusing and I struggle with that. The first 5 episodes had me hooked but towards the end it got predictable. I called the ending at the end of episode 5 . Luther or #1 became a bore and his feelings for Allison his sibling , was a bit far fetched and unecessary at times. It bought it down a bit. For me Klaus is the most entertaining and funny with his superpower of being able to communicate with the dead. Cha Cha and Hazel are so sadistic , but they make it comical . Mary J Blige plays Cha Cha brilliantly! It'll be interesting to see where they go with the next series.

This episode makes all the difference
ronnie_blackiii20 February 2019
I wasn't impressed with the first half of the series, so so impressed with 6-9, and the last episode really pulled it together for me. I have to admit I was a little pissed at the amount of tolerance shown, considering the circumstances (cant say much more on that subject without spoilers) but maybe thats what the writers wanted, if so, they did their jobs. The special effects and writing in the 10th episode saves the entire series. I really don't care for a season 2, its basically The Watchmen Movie only differences being they are extremely screwed up young adults instead of middle aged.

After having its problems in my eyes the majority of the season it finishes on a high! What an amazing end every part was perfect! Here's to hoping season 2 goes from strength to strength

I was sceptical at first, but I really love the character development and the direction of the story

I'd really like to think this is a nice metaphor for what can happen when someone feels unwanted, ashamed, and deprived of who they really are. There was a similar idea in the first Fantastic Beasts movie.

We may get to see the sister live a life without her potential being shut down out of fear from others.

Season One Review.
southdavid26 February 2019
I'm going to review this as "Season one" even though as I write this a second season has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, though based on buzz and reviews I think it's probably likely.

Adapted from a series of comics by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, "The Umbrella Academy" is about a group of children with special powers who are collected to live as a family under the guidance of distant patriarch Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore). Twenty years on from their time as a superhero team, the remaining members of the family are reunited by the death of Sir Reginald and the return of long missing family member No 5 (Aiden Gallagher) who has returned from the future with a plan to divert the apocalypse.

Though it's not without its flaws I generally enjoyed this season. It reminded me of times of the recent "Lemony Snicket" series, with a deliberate stylised unrealness to the world that the characters inhabit. Fashions and technology are designed to appear timeless and also to reflect the number of characters that can travel through time. It's often funny, laugh out loud funny at times and the action scenes that occur regularly are usually well done. The music choices are really good too, drawing from a range of sources (and again from different decades to establish that "out of time" feeling).

The visual effects I thought I'd keep separate from both the negatives and the positives as some of them, such as the motion capture performance of Mr Pogo are staggeringly good for television. In fact most of the CGI work is excellent. The practical effects though, particularly the head stuck on a gorilla-ish body for Luther aren't as impressive. I don't know if they lost confidence in a different effect but this one doesn't really work at all.

The pacing though, I felt was the shows real problem. A lot of the character beats were hit a few times more than they need to be, in order to establish the characters and a couple of subplots could perhaps have been lost altogether without losing much impact. Shorn of a couple of episodes I think that it could have been tighter run. Tonally it's a bit strange too, I haven't read the comic books but I have been reading about them since watching the series. I does feel like the production backed away from some of the more outlandish aspects that they could have done.

Fortunately though, the series keeps its better episodes for the end and they are enough to maintain my interest for a second series, should one be incoming.

Really bad
samyueldanyo8 September 2021
Predictable since episode 1. Copy of X-Men. Everyone making dumb choices left and right in order for the weak script to advance. No logical continuity. Just really bad.

I cannot understand how people on here are giving this 8-10.

They have been told the apocalypse is still coming and both the characters and audiences think was the different way. But the actual event of apocalypse is really amazing and I had been shocked. I was like "OMG!!!Thats totally badass way to show Apocalypse."

Hits All The Right Notes.

Warning: Spoilers
Stellar final episode to the first season. Although season one can feel like it's taking its time to get to the meat and potatoes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) this episode along with the previous two before it make the wait more than worth while. There are some incredible character moments throughout and it is action packed from start to finish. It strikes the perfect blend between drama and comedy, it's funny but it never feels like it takes away from the more serious parts. And of course, the soundtrack is brilliantly used and we get a ballsy, earth shattering ending.

Explosive finale!!
marks_f23 January 2021
Perfect ending to a perfectly scripted series! Have binged this in a week... it's that good! Strong performances from all the cast have made this so enjoyable. Every character has developed and the scripts have helped them all to fulfil their roles in the character development. Can't wait to start series 2!!!

Here We Go!
Hitchcoc22 September 2023
Vanya at the theater. The white violin in hand, sort of like Gandalf. The group acting like a bunch of boobs at times goes in totally unprepared. Luther, for some reason, has power over everyone, even though he's only a brick. I know this episode is manipulative. It gets us hepped up for season two. New powers are unleashed and Vanya is still with the family. They never deserved her. Even when Dad was at his worst, they could have had some compassion. Especially when they had some really bad real life issues. The final scenes of total destruction are well done. We now know a little about each characters. I see Ben is going along for the ride too. What is his status?

I Had No Patience
dan_isacsson21 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After watching Episode 9, and I loved the show up until this point, I did not have the patience to watch as they antagonized the "villain" of this episode. It seems intentional, and I'm happy it didn't turn into an all-out simplistic war. Either way, I ended up skipping through this whole episode as I wasn't really a fan of watching her deteriorate into a villain for completely obvious reasons.

Episode 10 seems well-done, in spite of my skipping through it, so I might edit this review after a rewatch but... I definitely lost a lot of my patience after the ninth episode. It went somethng like this:

"Oh, so... okay... they're just gonna' be fighting her for the rest of this episode and... like.. defeat her? *skip, skip* Yeah basically. Ah, a few parts in-between with time freezing still going on... alright. *skip, skip* Everyone's fighting, she does the obvious "it's all okay" despite there being more than half the episode left so there's no way that would happen... *skip, skip* blah, blah, blah. Ooh, new powers! Go Ben! Oh, so... she's not gonna' get killed? Alright, I might rewatch this."

A totaly affront to all that is watching a show, but... meh. This review will be completely redone if I rewatch it and get a different opinion. I still think they kind of... rushed the tenth episode. A lot of things happened that just... yeah, we'll see. I don't know. It felt largely predictable but a few things caught me off-guard at the end so... *sigh*

The music was good - well some of it
akaslammin23 April 2023
Let's go bowling, really! And then argue and resolve some teenage angst. The show wants to be quirky but quirky done badly - and this is bad - is just silly.

A clear example of the end justifies the means. It's pretty obvious when a show doesn't really know how to continue the natural flow of a narrative. They shoehorn inconsistent elements and actions in to achieve the outcome.

It all seemed to go wrong in episode 9 and then they seemed to continue it into episode 10.

And surely the intent of character driven shows like this is that you like and care about them. But the only characters that had any substance or depth were Klaus and Hazel. The rest would not be missed.

The best episode of the season by far, with some really cinematic shots and an unexpected ending. Though the ending was definitely a cop out.

highly Exaggerated

Warning: Spoilers
Very poor screenplay, One can easily guess what would happen in the next episode. Vanya's powers are highly exaggerated just in few days she was able to become from a normal human being to a death star.

Netflix Sequel Bait
adunreal-445509 May 2019
Don't waste time watching this show. The finale was bad like real bad. It sets up a cliffhanger for the next season in the worst way possible. They make stupid decisions all along. I was told how good this series is. But it's very disappointing.

I've seen this before
Jagdpanzer17 February 2019
And I'm getting tired of forced dramas where peolpe try to do something, goes bad and keep trying it. Well, that sums up the last three episodes. I've alredy seen this. Kind of sad since it had a great premisea

Edit: I read the p'remise of the comics and actually this is an improvement, at least on what triggers the situations, but still. Predictable and ninesensical at certain points. Raised to three stars
