Episode 4.1
Prismark1012 January 2019
It is the battle of the sleuthing padres. Father Brown in the afternoon and Sidney Chambers returns in the evenings, but this priest is looking for danger and Geordie is worried.

So should the viewer as James Norton will be departing in this series and his replacement is already being lined up. Will Davenport a character who is already giving the Archdeacon trouble.

Events have moved into 1956 and rock n roll. Geordie is already talking about the good old days.

However the spectre of racism haunts the community when Rev Nathaniel Todd travels from Alabama to talk about the civil rights movement. His talk is met with violent protests and in the melee his son is stabbed to death.

There was a strong opening but it petered out. In fact the mystery and its resolution was weak. I thought it was a ragged episode. The reason being the writer Daisy Coulam had to set up Sydney's forthcoming replacement.

Changing of the guard
Steve7701-626-37688515 July 2019
Good to see Grantchester back, even for what will apparently be Sidney/James Norton's final season. Hope they avoid the clumsy fisticuffs of episode one as the season proceeds, it's not their strong suit.

A Great Show...Hopefully It Shall Continue.!!!

Granchester was & Is a great show, although, sometimes I believe the storylines can be a little too cliche. The first three series were entertaining, and the fourth being ok; hopefully it shall continue on the same path with the fifth series.! Love Robson Greens character as 'Geordie...🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Back in style.
Sleepin_Dragon11 January 2019
We've had several new shows, Silent Witness, Father Brown, Death in Paradise, and after the first watches of all, this was definitely the best. I worried that with James Norton's decision to leave, the show may have dipped in quality, none of it, this was a terrific episode.

I thought the story was deeply engaging, obviously a tough watch, due to the subject matter, but it was thoroughly enjoyable, maintaining the quality of the excellent third series. The opening scenes were superb.

Tom Brittney will do just nicely, it's obviously sad that he's replacing the wonderful Norton, but change is good. The pair shared some nice scenes. Samuel West and Patterson Joseph were also terrific.

Thanks for the last three years James Norton's, it's been great, here's to the next few years.

Not the best
kellybethga21 July 2019
I'm from the state of Georgia, and have a southern accent. These were the worst fake southern accents ever, and usually British actors can pull it off better than Americans (think sheriff rick from walking dead. He's British and you'd never know). Other than that, I enjoyed the story line, except for the fact that I came here to read reviews and SOME BUTTHEAD put serious spoilers in her review and didn't label it as such. Thanks a lot. I still like Sydney and don't get why suddenly he's so vilified.

I Like English Parons Series
bshaef-3422916 July 2019
Grantchester is the coolest of them all. A hard drinking womanizing English country parson. I like this guy. First episode of season 4 was great. I enjoy watching all the English persons giving each other sly little digs. Much more witty than anything on American TV.

Thewlis or Marsan please
priscillahodgkins-214566 October 2019
If Sidney Chambers was not played by oh so handsome James Norton, but by say, David Thewlis or Eddie Marsan, would we be more aware of his slippery self-indulgence, spiritual fatigue, and that pesky drinking problem? I think so. Too much of the show's facile charm comes from how Chambers is portrayed by Norton. And I readily confess I started watching the show just to see lovely Norton. Then I kept tuning back in because I adore Robson Green. It's only when I think about credibility that I question the producers' choice of Norton playing Chambers with so much charm. Norton can play any character. See Happy Valley where he plays a despicable low life.

David Thewlis and Eddie Marsan are not immediately alluring. They grow in you. Someone please make a show staring Marsan and Thewlis.

Confusing
pianochair15 May 2019
This is a great series, but the opening episode was awful. The story line was almost non existent and it became rather pedestrian as it went along. The writer was trying hard to portray the changing times regarding wives working, rock and Roll, freedoms etc, but it was just terrible.

Completely unbelievable

Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers* Last season we're lead to believe that the church and his parish are so important to Sydney that he can bring himself to leave them so he can marry the love of his life Amanda. But a blink later not only is over his heartbreak, he decides to leave not only the church and parish, but his entire country for a woman he met a week ago? I call BS. I understand having to write James Norton out of the show, but this plot was exceptionally lazy. I give up on Grantchester.

Grantchester fans deserved better.

Warning: Spoilers
I have loved this show since the beginning and knew that it was inevitable that James Norton would leave. I just thought that his final show would have everyone in floods, but the writing wasn't up to the quality of the rest of the series.

I thought it was pretty cool that they tackled civil rights. Too bad they bungled it by hiring British actors whose American southern accents are worse than Kevin Spacey's. The resolution of the first mystery was very hollow. A professor was enraged that his wife danced with a black man THAT HE INVITED TO ENGLAND?

Then suddenly Sydney's alcohol use is at a crisis level. Just as suddenly, he forgets how he pined for Amanda, falls in love at first sight and runs off to Alabama, of all places. Did he know ANYTHING about Alabama? Obviously not.

It ends with another mystery being solved via a coincidence that was too big to ignore, the clue being a necklace appearing in a photo.

I hope the rest of the series gets better. The new vicar has possibilities, but not the gravitas of James Norton, nor the chemistry with Geordie. I hate to see this show stick around in decline. Pull the plug if you can't do better than this episode..

No more fake American Southern accents, please
sasha9915 July 2019
I've loved this series. Up until now. Confused story line. The phony accents of were appalling. Sidney's existential crisis was painful to watch. I didn't perceive any chemistry between him and Violet. A dismal episode.

Wow. Such a disappointment
hhouser16 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I could barely watch this episode all the way through - in fact, I haven't finished it yet. It was that bad. Sidney suddenly decides he's in love with another woman - a woman he just met? Sorry - I totally just lost all respect for him. The old Sydney would never get over Amanda. Sleep with a random person, fine - but not love another woman. Not to mention the whole episode is totally rehashed content. Way too long. It was dreadful. Update - I finally finished this stupid episode and it's even WORSE than I thought. Sydney wants to leave Grantchester to go be with this woman (with whom he has zero chemistry) from the States that he just met. This is the same Sydney that chose the church over Amanda after three agonizing seasons? So maddening. So frustrating. So disappointing. What on earth are these writers thinking? If they need to write James out of the script, have him leave to go find Amanda. That would at least be satisfying as a love story. I'm not sure if I'll watch the following episodes. so sad.

Truly abysmal.
smartinezmd23 August 2019
I, too, really enjoyed this entire series until I got to this episode and all that I could think was: WTF? It was very poorly written, i.e., unbelievable and uninteresting. The only thing that makes it the slightest bit palatable are the characters whom you've grown to know and love over the first three seasons sans Amanda. What they've done to Sydney's character - just to write him out of the series - is like watching a good friend go into surgery and you've got to actually watch an inept surgeon take out the wrong organ or amputate the wrong leg. It's that bad. Knowing that Sydney is leaving the series is traumatic enough. But, then, to watch the writers, producers, director orchestrate this mess is salt into the wound. Fast forward this episode and say a quick 'good-bye.' (The chemistry between Sydney and Violet is truly not there and her 'southern' accent is horrific. Like others have stated in their reviews, nothing makes sense and their interactions are tedious to watch.)

Boring and Predictable
Seawarrior0715 July 2019
Aside from the obviously fake Southern accents, this premiere of Grantchester was awful. There is not the slightest hint of a mystery, more like a soap opera with Sidney spiraling out of control and Geordie trying to figure his life out. If the series is billed as a mystery, write it as a mystery not a social commentary. However, as with most things, maybe this "new" Grantchester will improve with age. Grantchester can't touch Endeavour, Father Brown, or Death in Paradise.

Warning: Spoilers
As Dad would say, the script was as stiff as a varnished eel. Nothing rang true. But I knew the thing was doomed when the very first scene was a fence-jumping chase scene, sadly reminiscent of Hot Fuzz. All the details are ghastly. The accents, the absurdity, the hideous dessication of our favorite characters. Lord, what crap.

Predictable Plot With Terrible Southern Accents
Seawarrior0715 July 2019
Using a boorish theme, namely race, coupled with atrocious fake Southern accents and a predictable plot this episode of Granchester was really a disappointment. There was no mystery, no intrigue whatsoever, just Sidney acting anything other than a priest and Geordie trying to sort himself out. At times I wondered if an amateur submitting their first ever script had written this episode.

A big disappointment
mketchum116 July 2019
Weak script, weaker characters, and the connection between the first hour and the second was vague, if there actually was a connection. Anymore episodes like this one and the crew will be looking for another employer.

Disappointed
pgreywacz-500-4679815 July 2019
I tune in to watch Sydney Chambers' life in Grantchester. I'm sorry, but I don't like the new character Will. I hope it will change back soon. I know how bad things were in the United States in the sixties and it seems like the vicar will be out of his depths. Don't get me wrong, it is commendable that he believes he can help. But I watch the show because of where it takes place.

Just when you thought "It can get no worse"-----
booksnob-7871627 July 2019
From the beginning of this, I did not ever expect a rival to Morse or Foyle's War, et al, but a sensible, entertaining, watch-able mystery within the obvious parameters.

By the end of Season 3, I spent no time pacing the floor awaiting the advent of the current season--of which I have now seen 3 episodes. Those 3 hours have transcended all episodes of the first 3 seasons for Schlock content, and have left in the dust my previous understanding of just how stultifying such drivel can be.

I think James Norton escaped to the U.S. because he had seen some of these scripts.........

Absolutely hate this show
Apd22722 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
How dare a man of the cloth disclose a confidence. When one upholds his faith another tears it down. Does he suddenly forget that his breach of confidence cost a man his life. The cop isn't a good man at all. He lies and cheats. This show disgusts me.

And for the love of god could these British shows stop using Brit's with bad accents in roles of Americans.

This feels like a repeat
silasthehobbit11 January 2019
Apparently a new series, that opens with an episode that feels like a repeat. The storyline could have been from an earlier series, or Endeavour, George Gently etc.

Civil Rights Reaches Grantchester
Hitchcoc22 July 2019
A group of American black activists visit Sidney's town. They try to speak but are drowned out by bigots. Soon thereafter one of the group is murdered in the street. One of the entourage is an attractive young black woman. Sidney is immediately taken with her. Then things go away from the commitment to reality.

Listening to the bad southern accents and the dialog handled in such a ham-handed "racially correct" way was just simply annoying.

Vomit Virtue Signalling BS
jaubrey726 July 2022
If you like wallowing in your White Guilt, this episode is for you. Then of course we have a fake accent "Southern" Black woman denouncing her violent, oppressive country...America to a British audience. Not watchable. Even James Norton (Sydney) had enough and bolted off the series after being subjected to the BS. Stick a fork in it, its done.

Great series but TERRIBLE southern accents
kristi-whitehead24 January 2021
I love this show but season 4 ep1 the Alabama accents are all over the place; it's difficult to watch. Some of the worst I've heard.
