Couldnt Quite Reach The Heights of Season 1.
RobTortureWright9 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Anyone who reads this and has seen both seasons would undoubtably agree that season 1 was much better. It had purpose, direction, a strong narrative and the characters to drive the story at a gripping and exciting pace.

However most people will surely make a decision on whether they liked this season or not, I'm still unsure. It certainly tried its best and at times was very entertaining as we clawed to know more and more, but at the mid point I found myself losing interest for the big conclusion as I knew it wouldn't live up to my expectations. They tried their best to make Ambrose open up and be somewhat relatable with the story about his mother but it all felt a little too forced and became somewhat of a distraction and mild annoyance as the season progressed.

The person I could relate to most was Julian because I felt the same way he did every episode, confusion. The reason for that was the story wasn't well rounded enough to fill all episodes completely so we found ourselves sidetracked with flashbacks and substories that was of little interest or just a bit pointless to the overall story arc.

The ending left me with quite a few unanswered questions and I have to agree that justice wasn't served and it all felt a little false which takes away from the immersive show The Sinner tries to be. I have to say that season 2 is definitely worth a watch but just don't expect it to be the same show Season 1 was.

Overall a fairly decent watch that tries to keep you immersed and on the edge of your seat but is better served as a late night binge while in bed.

Season 2 review
MUFCOK19 December 2018
I loved the first season of the Sinner, so naturally, when I saw that season 2 was being realised, I was both excited and apprehensive. I won't explain the plot as it would be hard to not give anything away and I want to keep this review spoiler free.

Season 2 stands completely on its own, the only thing linking the two seasons is the main detective (Harry Ambrose, played by Bill Pullman). I binge watched all 8 episodes in 1 day and overall I found it to be a very gripping season.

Positives: 1) It is shot beautifully. The cinematography is gorgeous with well-crafted scenes. 2) The acting is solid from pretty much everybody. Bill Pullman and Carrie Coon are particular standouts. 3) The story is intriguing, and the pacing is very good, meaning that after every episode you just have to watch another. The 8 episodes flew by.

Negative: 1) The last couple of episodes got a little 'too much'. There were a few too many twists for my liking, with a couple of them leaving me with the 'really?' feeling. Some of the twists took it from being a really realistic drama to the point of being a little too unbelievable.

The first season was better and overall season 2 is strong and should be viewed on its own merit as it has next to no links to the first season. Personally, I think the negative reviews that this season is getting are a little harsh. This show is much better than many TV shows. It has good acting, cinematography, pacing, storytelling, characters and tension. All episodes are around 40 minutes, taking the entire runtime just over 5 and a half hours - Very easy to binge watch in a day!

Season 2 rating: 8/10

A good ending to a fascnating story of ambiguities.
patrickfile23 November 2018
Ok, this may not be the best episode of the season, but what a ride it has been. This series never went under a 7.5/10 in my opinion with some 9/10 episodes.

The cast is excellent again this time, with Bill Pullman being able to show how wonderful actor he is. In the first season Jessica Biel was on top, now it his turn.

For those who said "justice was not serve"....this people didn´t pay enough attention to the story. Don´t pay them attention.

More questions than answers...
connieghoyt7 February 2021
We just finished watching Episode 8 of Season 2 and still have the same question we had in Episode 1 of Season 2. WHY did he murder that couple? In the finale Ambrose says "Julian knows why he did it" but we still don't know. WHAT happened to "The Beacon"? Cult leaders DO NOT disappear of their own free will. Did Vera poison him? WHY would Marin pull a gun on Jack? She called him and told him where they were. Frustrating end to a good season.

Season Two Review
southdavid22 February 2019
Personally, I'm another one in the camp that preferred this season over the first - mostly because I prefer mysteries and this had more of that than the first.

Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) fresh from the publicity surrounding the season one case is asked to consult on a case by Heather Novak (Natalie Paul) daughter of his childhood friend and police officer in the Pacific North West town where Ambrose grew up. The case involves Julian Walker (Elisha Henig) a 12 year old boy who appears to have inexplicably poisoned his parents at a motel on their way to Niagara Falls. The case brings the police into contact with a local commune, which have in the past had a reputation for unconventional therapy sessions. The case, and the commune, provide obstacles to the investigation throughout, but they may force Harry to the childhood trauma that still haunts him.

Again, I think perhaps I preferred this season over the first because it fell into more of the conventions of the genre than that last one did. Harry felt more like a Detective this time, and less like a man who intuitively knows what the right answer is and goes for it. Reveals and plot twists run through the whole season, and not just saved up for one at the end. Not every twist is particularly inspired though, for example, the one from the finale is telegraphed way too early in the season.

I think another reason this season has the edge is that, although Jessica Biel was excellent in the first season, Carrie Coon is another level to play off both Pullman and alongside Henig. The way her performance hides her characters motivations and thoughts, keeping you guessing that she might be an evil mastermind whilst also engendering sympathy for her and fear for her relationship with Julian is masterfully done.

I like the character of Harry Ambrose, and would watch a third season.

Good season
fitzwolf-6578212 November 2018
Good season, with a lot of twists and entertainment. I loved the acting (mainly that of Bill Pullman) and the photography. The only thing I didn't like was that it all ended up being some kind of How I Met Your Mother with disturbing scenes.

Really a Mystery Unraveled!!!

Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the Top Review. I feel it was very well acted and the plot twists defined. The only critique I do have is there were not any character development of Heather's biological Mother and father's relation outside of what was finally revealed in the finale (Marin's relation with her biological father??. Only her father would not talk about it??

Carrie Coon Carried it
fin-123-47258111 February 2022
The downside to watching an inordinate amount of TV/Movies over the years, is that one can quite often 'see it coming' and unfortunately, the misdirection was ineffectual in this series, so the twist was, least for myself, transparent.

What a talented team of writers, producer & director need to do to offset an obvious ending, is to make the journey there an enjoyable one. To have multiple points of interest/subplots, build suspense & conclude these arcs in the tapestry whilst seamlessly flowing forward.

I don't believe they achieved anywhere near to the level I am espousing. Many of the red-herrings came and went without depth nor clarity. There was little in the way of tension nor foreboding.

Perhaps I am judging too harshly but season one set a high standard from which to critique.

There was so much to admire about S1; it was up there with True Detective in many regards & not least in a superb performance by Jessica Biel.

The saving grace in S2, for me, was Carrie Coon's performances. I found her to be magnificent, thoroughly captivating. She stole the scene in every scene & it was such a pleasure to behold.

Spoiler alert

The ending would have been better if the ginsom weed was used by Vera to make Julian hallucinate and think he killed the couple but in fact it was Vera all the time. One last twist at the end

No justice has been served

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was an anticlimax. Why was the 'mom' not being prosecuted? She brainwashed a kid, claimed to be the mother of someone while she was not, was a leader of a cult where rape and physical abuse happened on a daily basis. How is this possible? She even got to keep Julian! Unbievable.

OUTRANKS SEASON ONE BY A LONGSHOT
tarasoxfan7 August 2019
Season two of The Sinner was exceptional. The story was so out of the box and original. I loved it. The acting was superb. Especially Elisha Henig. This kid is a phenomenal actor. The scene in the motel room alone while Bess was dying was award worthy. Seeing more of Ambrose's past was interesting also. The only downfall I found was there were no big surprises. I knew who Julian's father was after the 3rd episode. I highly recommend this season. Excellent.

Warning: Spoilers
Am I the only one who noticed that it is genetically impossible that two people with blue eyes would have a brown eyed kid? It makes no sense that Jack Novack is the father.

It is also a nonsense that Vera didn't get any consequences.

Seriously, they failed AGAIN on convincing me I didn't lose my time wathing all these episodes.

Good season!

Enjoyed season 2. Good characters, good plot twists, good acting. Except Natalie Paul. Do not think she did a good job portraying Heather.

Looking forward to season 3.

Wrapped Up Without Major Consequences
Hitchcoc8 August 2023
I just read a review by a guy who was a "gluten" for punishment, so he watched the whole season. He obviously stayed away from the wheat on the screen. I have made my feelings known all through seven episodes and awaited this one. When Marin's body was found, I would imagine we were supposed to think Julian did it. The real perpetrator comes as quite a surprise. There is a lot of testimony revealed. Heather feels she has blood on her hands because she betrayed Marin (or so she thought). My big problem is that Vera walks away. Everyone is so happy at the end--the living ones anyway. The kid did murder those people, but..... Anyway, it's satisfying but utterly unrealistic.

No consequences
VixiePixie2021 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I find this a lot with TV shows where characters never experience any real consequences. The shows where they do, even when you have sympathy are the ones that are the most gripping. Shows like this where we are given a fairytale happy ending are just disappointing.

I've got a couple of points I want to make and there will be spoilers ahead.

1. Whilst I can see the kid really felt guilt and shame for his actions, especially once he realised his victims were actually trying to help him, that still doesn't make up for their murders. I feel like most children wouldn't immediately react to being kidnapped by people he loved and trusted with murder. Not before trying to run away or call home. I know there was this idea of a new beginning after death, plus the seriously messed up upbringing but he still knew what he was doing and could still be a danger in the future. There was nothing to show he wouldn't have this reaction again. His punishment felt too light considering he was a 13 year old who not only killed two people but did it in such a planned and meticulous way (he had to find the leaves and make the tea, this wasn't an instinctive reaction or self defence, he thought it through).

2. The 'mother' Vera also received no consequences. She is the person who deserved them the most surely. She raised this child in an abusive household which she was in charge of. She was present for and sanctioned a lot of violence. She stole a child from his mother. And then kidnapped him again after he was arrested. I feel like there needs to be some kind of repercussions here?

3. Who was that body that was found in the car in the lake? Did we ever find out? I feel like I missed that bit. They thought it was Marin, but then she was alive so then they just moved on and never addressed it. Also did they kill off that evil cult leader guy? Was he the one in the car. Because I think they said they believed it to be a woman. I dunno, I was left confused there.

Mostly this show was just very anti-climactic and left me with a lot of questions. The first season was brilliant. This season kept me gripped the whole way through then left me disappointed by the end. I wanted more from it.

Also the two protagonists, Harry and Heather (?) were so blah - their characters were not interesting and the juxtaposition with Harry's mother left me with more questions and was frankly just distracting. It wasn't necessary.

This season wasn't awful, I found the story interesting the whole way through, I just felt let down by the ending as I feel like it was just too easy, too happily ever after and that doesn't feel right for a show as dark as this.

Sorry but I didn't like it this season...
lilzsuzsika16 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The first season I liked so much, when this season popped up on Netflix I was happy to see it. But with with episode to episode I got disappointed. The kid annoyed me, oh wait not just the kid all the characters. I really struggled to watch it to the end. It doesn't makes any sense, the motives are poor...NO justice served in the end... The raping father was to much. They just could go with maybe the kid was really a murderer that would made better sense...Or his fake mother could be the villan...but no they decided to go with a cliche. And sorry but who cares for Ambrose childhood? Whats the point with that?

So very disappointing
sommiewoman25 April 2020
I think we're all unanimous here when we say the first season was perhaps one of the best starts to a series we've ever seen. It was utterly compelling and pure genius.

So why then is season two so far below the standard set in season one? The cornerstone of season one revolved around the motive for the killing in the first episode. That was completely devoid in season two, and the viewer was left completely baffled as to why any of the events in part one even took place.

In fact, I reckon the entire season could have been just 3 episodes long - 1, 7 and 8 - and nobody would have noticed the difference.

The entire season was a mess, with a second rate cast in my opinion (apart from Bill, of course), and it was a shocking fall after the never-to-be-equalled first season.

Season 2 Review
IPyaarCinema12 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Review By Kamal K

None of it made any sense in the end. The acting and production were pretty good but the show just kept throwing out twists that were never explained and relied way too much on red herrings. Why was there even a cult? Why did the kid kill those pleasant folks who were taking him to Niagara Falls? Yeah maybe he thinks that they kidnapped him, if he thinks that they kidnapped him, he can tell motel owner about this why he killed them.

The kid is portrayed to be dumb or suffering from some kind of disability didn't turn out to have some sort a dark ending in the end although this was teased.

Why did the judge just let the kid go at the end? Why did the detective want to protect the kid? There is zero answers to any of these questions.
