In the last few years we have seen streamers cutting titles from their catalog, resulting in titles not available anywhere to stream. This has raised concerns about the ability to reliably access content in the digital era. In theory, there should be a way to monetize even the most niche content. Fast platforms have excelled at this, providing a home for content that audiences may not be willing to pay a subscription fee for but are happy to watch for free with ads.
With that in mind, here are the most in-demand classic shows (ended before 2000) that currently lack a streaming home and are a potential opportunity for platforms looking to cash in on untapped audience demand.
The most in-demand show that ended before 2000 and doesn’t currently have an on-demand streaming home is “The Dukes of Hazzard.” This is also more of a cautionary tale than a potential opportunity for platforms to seize on.

Jason Momoa has quite a reputation in Hollywood as a sweetheart. Although his role as Aquaman does not reflect this sentiment, his recent casting in the Minecraft live-action film and adorably psychotic character in Fast X showcase just how precious he can be. From his interviews and fan interactions, he has formed a beloved sort of image for himself, being overtly masculine but extremely kind-hearted and thoughtful.

However, it would seem that this ‘goody two shoes’ image seems to be slipping through his grasp as he knows it. Recently, respected YouTuber, Valkyrae, revealed an interaction that she witnessed between the actor and a crew member on the set of his upcoming film. To say that he does not look good coming out of it would be an understatement.

Plot: Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.
Review: I have been a Kevin Smith fan since I saw Clerks in the mid-90s. Smith had a solid run over the early course of his career, but the 2010s were less kind from a critical standpoint. While I have stood by his projects even when the quality was less than I knew he was capable of, my gut told me that Kevin Smith had another great project in him. Grand Praemium
Taiwan-born film director Ang Lee has been named as one of the five recipients of the Praemium Imperiale award of the Japan Art Association. The awards ceremony will take place in Tokyo on Nov. 19.
Each recipient will receive JPY15 million alongside a testimonial letter and a medal. This year’s other recipients are: Sophie Calle (painting, France); Doris Salcedo (sculpture, Colombia); Shigeru Ban (architecture, Japan); and Maria João Pires (music, Portugal/Switzerland).
The Praemium Imperiale is the world’s largest and most prestigious art award in the five disciplines of painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theatre/film. Now in its 35th year, it gives international recognition to the arts, much as the Nobel Prizes do to the sciences.
Previous film sector winners include Ingmar Berman, Jean-Luc Godard and Kurosawa Akira.

When life hands you lemons, some people make lemonade, but Tyrese Gibson seems to be stuck wondering where all his sugar went. Yes, you read that right—our beloved Baby Boy star has hit a roadblock, not with car chases, but with unpaid child support. On September 9, 2024, the R&b singer found himself in a legal pickle in Fulton County, Georgia. The reason? He’d been giving child support payments the cold shoulder.

Judge Kevin Farmer wasn’t in the mood for any excuses when he found Gibson in contempt of court for skipping out on his $10,000 monthly dues for his daughter. Since April 2023, the actor’s contributions have been about plentiful—around $2,200 a month—leaving a big, empty gap. To dodge a stint behind bars, he was given a golden opportunity: cough up $73,000 within 48 hours.

Vin Diesel is eager to get back behind the wheel for Fast X: Part 2, and to mark the occasion, he’s sharing a new video on social media that gives Fast fans a peek behind the curtain at the latest film in the franchise. Instead of teasing a new cast member, Diesel’s video previews an intriguing “setting” for the high-octane action film to take place. The location looks like something between Mad Max, Blade Runner, and Pitch Black, with dust billowing around a desolate terrain. The muted orange landscape includes a curious-looking structure with neon pink lighting. It’s a bizarre backdrop for a Fast & Furious film. Color me confused. Are the Fast family finally going to space? Like, more so than they did in F9: The Fast Saga.

“CW Forever” and “CW Gold” are offered through Amazon’s free streaming platform, Freevee. (Graphic by The Desk)
Nexstar Media Group’s CW Network has launched its latest free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channels through Amazon’s Fast platform, Freevee.
The channels — CW Gold and CW Forever — were quietly added to Freevee last week, The Desk can confirm. It marks the latest effort by the CW Network to build out its Fast business since broadcaster Nexstar acquired a majority stake in the network two years ago.
Distribution terms of the deal between the CW Network and Amazon were not available. The two channels were not initially offered through the CW Network’s own Fast platform — which recently became available through the CW app for Apple TV and iPhones — but the channels appeared on the web version of the CW Fast platform a few hours after this story was first published.

BET and its sibling streamer BET+ are up for sale, and whoever buys them could have a huge opportunity to super-serve Black audiences.
As streaming continues to expand, inevitable and important questions about access and representation must follow. A 2023 survey found that Black viewers see better representation on linear TV than on streaming services, but new data from Horowitz Research shows that Black audiences are not averse to streaming by any stretch. Indeed, Black viewers will turn to a multitude of sources to find Black-focused content, and Horowitz’s numbers indicate there could be a big opportunity for whoever buys BET to drastically increase its audience.

General Hospital (Gh) spoilers and updates reveal William DeVry was written off the show nearly four years ago when Julian Jerome was killed. But is there a chance he could return once more, now that he wants to resurrect the mobster?
General Hospital Spoilers – Julian Jerome Was Killed Off Before
Longtime viewers will remember Julian was killed off before, when the character was played by a different actor-when he was resurrected last time, it was revealed he’d been in witness protection.
Even though this time around he was shown in a body bag as a floater after being shot off a bridge, nothing’s impossible with character resurrections!
Jason Morgan, (Steve Burton) Drew Cain, (Cameron Mathison) and several Cassadines have been resurrected over the years, including Drew having been in stasis.
If Gh really wanted to bring Julian back and have DeVry play him, they’d figure out a way to do so.

Paul Walter Hauser just went fast & furious at Vin Diesel.
While promoting “Inside Out 2,” Hauser implied to Cinemablend that Diesel is neither punctual nor approachable. Hauser then appeared to insinuate that Diesel does not treat people well.
Here’s how that happened: After the CinemaBlend interviewer told Hauser that his career means he’s “like Vin Diesel now” — especially with his character arc in the animated “Inside Out 2″ — Hauser replied, “Please don’t say that.”
The actor, who was rumored to lead Quentin Tarantino’s now-shelved final film “The Movie Critic,” continued of Diesel, “I like to think I am on time and approachable. I love people, but when I hear stories about Hollywood actors who get paid really well and mistreat people…I out them constantly, and it’s a blast.”

Paul Walter Hauser’s interview with CinemaBlend at the “Inside Out 2” press junket is gaining traction on social media for one viral moment in which the Emmy-winning actor calls out Vin Diesel for stories about Diesel allegedly mistreating cast and crew on set. The two actors have not worked together — and it appears that Hauser is not interested due to what he’s heard about Diesel.
When the CinemaBlend interviewer told Hauser that his arc in “Inside Out 2” means “you’re like Vin Diesel now,” the actor responded: “Please don’t say that.”

Disney kept a lock on the top spot as the media company responsible for the biggest share of TV viewing in May.
That’s according to Nielsen’s second Media Distributor Gauge, which looks at how TV use stacks up by company. Disney’s 11.4 percent of all TV use in May includes viewing on ABC, ESPN, FX, Hulu, Disney+ and the other cable and streaming properties under the Mouse umbrella. Disney’s share of TV use is consistent with its April figure of 11.5 percent — which was part of the first publicly released distributor rankings — and with the six months of data Nielsen had compiled before going public with the numbers.
A host of live sports telecasts, including the NBA playoffs, on ESPN and a number of season finales on ABC helped keep Disney on top of the list for the month.

The Fast and Furious franchise has become one that is running on fumes due to its over-extended storylines and stretching the limit of believability with each installment. The first film was a simple one about racing, and the franchise soon turned into an espionage-esquire franchise, with parts 5-7 being its peak era.
2011’s Fast Five is still the best of the Fast and Furious franchise | Universal Pictures
However, with part 8, the audience got tired of the shtick as the franchise went overboard with its plotlines and action sequences. Parts 9 and 10 were the worst of the lot where the films essentially became parodies of themselves. This article contains major spoilers for "Bad Boys: Ride or Die."
What does it mean to be a Bad Boy? That's the unasked question lingering over the "Bad Boys" franchise, but the question as well as the answer isn't as clear cut as it appears. After all, the title could be ironic, especially when Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz were originally slated to star in the first film. By the time the project morphed into Michael Bay's first feature starring then-tv sitcom stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the title became a mission statement, where the film was going to (and eventually did) prove that these funnymen could be genuinely badass.

After "Bad Boys II," 2020's "Bad Boys For Life" appeared to be a swan song for Detectives Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) as they faced the ravages of age as well as their checkered pasts, eventually...

Meeting people is easy. No, this isn’t just the name of (very good!) 1998 documentary starring the band Radiohead. It’s what we here at Film Independent hope that you’ll say walking out of this year’s Fast Track, Film Independent’s annual film financing market. Sure, meeting with dozens upon dozens of film distributors and financiers certainly sounds daunting. But if you stay present, stay hydrated and (at the very least) stay upright in your chair, there’s a good chance your innate passion and comprehensive authority over your own project will compel others and shepherd their investment dollars into your film’s coffers.
The deadline for Fi Members to apply to Fast Track 2024 are open through June 20. So don’t delay! In previous years, we’ve reached out to past Film Independent Fast Track Fellows for their advice on how to make the most of their...

Lionsgate’s MovieSphere channel will become the first major Fast (free ad supported streaming) channel to be measured by Nielsen.
Nielsen will report channel viewership in the same measurement used by traditional TV ad buyers. MovieSphere is available on 18 streaming platforms, including Samsung, Roku and Pluto TV, and it will be available on nearly 20 platforms before the end of the year. The channel includes titles from Lionsgate’s library from blockbusters to indie films.
MovieSphere will receive detailed demographic data on its audience with further clarity on viewership in relation to programming.
“By bringing proven linear TV metrics to the Fast space, Nielsen is providing us with a valuable and innovative tool to benchmark performance, evaluate what’s working and respond quickly to our audiences,” said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television Distribution Jim Packer. “This is potentially a very significant development where our team can leverage viewer reach, duration, frequency,...

At the Fox upfront on May 13, the network’s free ad-supported streaming service, Tubi, got just as much stage time as its traditional broadcast channels. Those so-called Fast platforms are becoming a bigger part of the entertainment conversation, and rising in popularity among users, as many paid streaming services are now bundling with one another in an effort to salvage costs, and as linear television audiences are on the decline.
The advantage for companies that have Fast offerings, including Fox’s Tubi, Paramount’s Pluto TV and The Roku Channel, is that the platforms come with lower costs than paid services, thanks to their massive libraries of in-house and licensed content, and some originals (or in the case of Pluto, no originals). And they bring in a large user base, offering another option for advertisers. While users may have initially been drawn in by the prospect of a free service,...

Fubo’s live television service is widely supported on connected TV devices as well as phones, tablets and computers.
Fubo is working on a no-cost version of its streaming television service that will include more than 100 free, ad-supported TV (Fast) channels.
The platform, tentatively named Fubo Free, will include the same Fast channels that are already available in Fubo’s subscription service, which starts at $80 per month before taxes and regional sports fees. It will also offer Fast channels that are programmed or supported by Fubo itself, including Maximum Effort Channel and Fubo Sports Network.
The platform is intended to help address customer churn by keeping former subscribers of Fubo’s pay TV service engaged with the product, the company’s CEO David Gandler said at a recent industry event.
Gandler affirmed Fubo is “a very expensive product,” one that is primarily focused on curating live sports programming from partner channels like ABC,...

Nexstar Media Group’s CW Network has updated its Apple TV app to include nearly 50 free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channels.
The update was pushed out to all modern Apple TV devices and is available to download via the built-in App Store for streamers who do not yet have the CW Network app.
As The Desk was first to report, the CW Network quietly introduced a handful of Fast channels via its website last year, which also includes video on-demand versions of CW network shows and other licensed programming.
The Fast channels come from a variety of sources, including the E. W. Scripps Company, FilmRise, Lionsgate and Electric Now. Last month, the CW Network launched its own Fast channel that includes re-runs of its competition series “Penn & Teller: Fool Us.”

Samsung has been the world’s largest manufacturer of television sets for 17 years running. Last year alone, it sold 8.3 million units of its most cut ting-edge, internet-connected TVs worldwide.
But when the electronics giant first tried to expand its reach into distributing movies and TV shows that viewers could buy directly through their sets, the effort generated little more than static. The launch of the company’s TV Plus platform in 2016 was a flop, executives admit, because the platform was built to offer something that most TV set owners didn’t want to buy from Samsung.
All of that changed around 2019, when Samsung made a 180-degree shift in its focus: The TV Plus homepage hub added a handful of streaming channels that were available to users for free with a tap of the remote control. Instead of asking consumers to open their wallets to pay for video-on-demand movies, Samsung was...
