I mean, let's not go crazy here with the 10s but it's solid
orcinussr30 April 2022
And though I consume a ton of content and have eclectic tares - these days I find that these comedies, especially the ones on premium networks (although, again let's not go crazy here cause showtime has really been slippin lately) - are rare treats that I really look forward to - Anyhoo, check it out, it's more than likely worth a half hour if your on the prowl for the ol slap and tickle of the mind.

Please watch it for yourself
ginabilly22 May 2022
I've read all the reviews here as of May 21, 2022, and not a single one resonates with how I feel about this show, so I'm writing my own.

First of all, as I write this on May 21, 2022, only three episodes of this show have aired. So how can anyone possibly have definitive feelings about a show after seeing just 3 episodes?? As of today, I'm giving it a solid 7, but I will certainly update this review after I've watched the entire first season.

Based on the 3 episodes I have seen, I think this show has potential. It's far too early to judge how the characters might (or might not) develop, and how the general plot of the show will progress. What I can tell you is that it's funny so far, and it has promise. Is it the funniest show I've ever seen? Of course not. How can any show be that great just 3 eps in? Shows like this need time to develop, and we just don't know yet where the story is going to take us.

What I do know is that the premise feels a bit fresh and orginal, and I like that. Someone here compared it to I Love Lucy, and said that neither this show nor I Love Lucy, are funny. Huh? That just makes no sense to me. I don't think this show resembles I Love Lucy at all, and I think both shows are funny. Someone else said the show is "woke" because it has Black and Brown people in the cast?? If diversity in casting offends you to the point where you're using words like "woke" in the pejorative, I think you've got other issues. I'll just leave it at that.

Back to the show: I think it's going to be much funnier to you if you've actually watched home shopping channels for any length of time. I have (they were a thing I watched pretty frequently in the 90s/early 2000s when I was trying to fall asleep at night) so in that respect, the show resonates with me. One thing I've always found interesting about home shopping channel hosts is how incredibly fake they appear. Always happy, chipper, and selling you things you don't need. I have always been fascinated by their on-air personas and if they actually match their off-air personas, and I LOVE that this show confronts that head-on. It's a premise that's rife with comedic potential and so far it has given me some good laughs. I hope it continues to do so. I'll let you know after the season ends. So far so good.

There's no center
adamsandel16 May 2022
Despite a strong supporting cast, Bayer lacks the comedic and acting chops to create a character to care about and root for. There's some fun shallow glam humor but the scripts are generally pretty blah.

Ugly Betty it is not
Couchkik208 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show is entirely based on the great charisma and sweet persona of the lead actress. It's just not up to her talent. To be fair she got most of the laugh in the pilot and acts as if she was in a completely different show. Because the rest of the cast feels like they are acting in a cheap sitcom from the 2000s.

But from episode 2 you can start to see the cracks and my main problem is how much they copied Ugly Betty. Mean fashionista boss? Check. Campy gay power assistant? Check. His shallow and obnoxious pretty sidekick? Check. I mean it's beyond lazy.

And the cancer twist may be intriguing but how can you build a whole show around that pretty dark concept?

Shame because the shopping network concept is very fun and could make for a great comedy.

Loved it so much that I created an imdb account just to review.
danielle-0596728 May 2022
This show rules. Vanessa Bayer and Molly Shannon have the cutest chemistry, every supporting actor is perfect in their role, the whole theme of the show is purposeful cringe but the writers don't overdo it and the actors take it just exactly far enough. It's so good.

The costume designers nail everyone's look too. So gaudy but again not overdone, just accurate.

You have to appreciate the satire they're going for, and probably won't appreciate it if you don't. They're mocking the super uncomfortable vapidness of this d-list celebrity subculture, but they're pretty grounded with it so it's not painfully obvious and wacky mockery.

And despite mocking these kinds of people, they still portray them as sweet, hurt, complex, vulnerable and striving - they're awful but so likable.

Definitely not for everyone but if you understand/love/hate everything about why home shopping networks are kind of fascinating - you'll probably love this.

The supporting cast is everything
angelabox8 July 2022
Just like with Ugly Betty, the supporting cast is everything.

I love Molly Shannon and I wish she had more of a caustic funny role- But the hoarding we find out about at the end is really funny. Vanessa Byers is better in small doses. Her big ole grin schtick gets old and then she alternates between goody goody good girl and then foul mouthed sailor. It doesn't read.

The real stars of this are the supporting cast. Jennifer Lewis who plays Patricia is just phenomenal. The characters of Darcy, Beema, Beth Ann, and Perry are all hysterically funny. It wanders off into a little woke BS occasionally but that's to be expected unfortunately. The love story between Vanessa Byers and what's his face is boring and forgettable.

Watch it simply for the supporting cast performances.

Perfectly fun
cekadah6 June 2022
Anyone watching this series shouldn't be expecting ground breaking comedy! This series is just for lighthearted fun and entertainment. I jumped on this show because Molly Shannon is one of the main characters and each show has been a fun 30 minutes. Vanessa Bayer, Jenifer Lewis, Paul James and all the other cast members work flawlessly as a group.

You can't go wrong watching this topial comedy of average people seeking fame on TV no matter what the path brings into their life. And the message made very clear - the material world can't bring happiness! As Darcy discovers.

Well, you won't hate it.
emortland27 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After bingeing a couple of 16-episode KDramas, this was refreshing just because Mses Bayer & Shannon are in it and the eight episodes are short and easy to watch. But I think what makes me like these series, but not love it, is Ms Bayer's character comes across as a one dimensional caricature in a SNL skit, and it wasn't until the very last scene where I thought, hey, she's got depth. You may see it differently. But compare it the scenes with Ms Lewis - is it just a matter of acting skill, or what you have to work with.

The premise is funny, the other characters are nicely done, and for no other reason than they're giving it their best shot, I hope they get renewed for Season Two. Why does this kind of remind me of "Ted Lasso" a lot? Either way, they're both pleasant amuse-bouche between KStuff.

FINALLY! FUNNY!
EveryDayFriend30 April 2022
Ima tough sell Who gets extremely irritated when hyped content turns out to be stinkers -BUT...

Man, it feels sooooooo good to FINALLY find a new great comedy where I'm hearing myself genuinely LOL'ing. Bayer's timing/writing is stellar. Dig the cast & roles. This is what Amy Schumer WISHES she could be. Vanessa's just taken the inside track and the half-hour hit of clever stuff is gonna be a huge HIT. It's a chick-thing, so leave me alone with my Super Jackpot, k?

Amazing performance by Jennifer Lewis
korinez30 June 2022
This is a good dramedy about the behind-the-scenes of a shopping network with a strong set of characters, some very unusual plot twists and jokes that manage to make you laugh. It has a very unique setting - I can't remember another show about TV shopping.

And there is someone in this show who steals almost all of it - JENNIFER LEWIS, WOW. Just an incredible acting performance, pure gold. She almost becomes the protagonist at some point - should there be a spinoff, it should be about her character. The dialogues are well-written in this show and with her delivery some of them just become really, really, amazing. Made me want to check her other works, too.

I do believe this could have been a very successful comedy movie, too, maybe a shorter time would do this whole concept good. But I enjoyed it nevertheless.

Started as a comedy...
maxrelax4 January 2023
After season 1 starting as a comedy it quickly moved to a dramedy and more or less ended as a drama. Why can't we have straight comedies any more? It seems there's no escape from life's problems nowadays. Every time we try to just leave all the stress of daily living behind us, something has to slam us back to reality. Usually it's real life, but more and more frequently it's comedies themselves; the very tool we're attempting to use to release ourselves from daily stressors. Today's comedies refuse to allow us to fully escape, consistently reminding us that there's no true escape. If there's a season 2, likely count me out. I'll keep looking for a new comedy without the needless drama.

Becoming increasingly hard to watch
alyhammell25 June 2022
It stated off strong but I am now at episode 6 and some of the characters are becoming so unlikeable that I am skipping through whole scenes just to make it through the episode.

The main character, while sweet, is too awkward at times and it becomes uncomfortable

It will be a surprise if this show sustains an audience enough to be renewed for a second season.

Laugh-out-loud opportunities are missed because of the serious drama
julieshotmail20 June 2022
"I Love That for You" looks goofy from a distance, a satire on TV shopping networks. With both Molly Shannon and Vanessa Bayer in the cast (and a delicious Ryan Phillippe cameo), this show has the potential to be outrageously funny as those two ladies are powerhouses in that awkward-comedy genre. So I tune in for them, and I stay throughout the entire 8 episodes to see where this takes me. There are indeed very funny moments, however I keep bracing myself for the laugh-out-loud punchlines but they never quite get there. Those moments are usually tempered down by the ill-fitted serious drama dialogue. Not to say that there can't be drama sprinkled in, considering the subject matter, but the way those scenes are interwoven with the comedy could have been executed better.

Awkwardly Hilarious!
Dougmd197423 May 2022
Molly Shannon is a perfect fit in this comedy; Vanessa Bayer is her usual goofy self. Jenifer Lewis's character is basically the Miranda Priestly of TV sales. If you've watched home shopping channels, this feels oh-so-real and a parody of a lot of the current band of shopping hosts out there. It's even set in Pennsylvania just like a certain channel that shall remain nameless. I enjoy the feel and sharp quick wit of the writing, so it travels at my speed of humor. I recommend giving it a try!

Somewhat predictable - funny though
MrSjoerd3 May 2022
The first episode is a good set-up for the rest of the season. I hope they'll surprise me though; the first episode was rather predictable. I also hope that the characters will be developed over time. Right now you kind of have the clichés: the enthusiastic ingenue, the 'tough love' boss, the gay assistant, the bitchy (soon to be) rival and the new best friend.

There were funny moments that made me chuckle and it was entertaining overall. Will watch the rest of the season.

Disclaimer: I'm Highly Biased!
sopenco18 June 2022
Vanessa Bayer is like crack to me. I love everything about her, her acting, her style, her characters - forget it!

And a show that revolves around her and let's her have fun and be silly while also exploring more serious sides of her character checks SO MANY boxes for me that I couldn't give it anything less than a 10.

That being said, all the acting is excellent in this show, and the casting really is terrific. The writing is really fun too! So this isn't JUST an I-love-VB review. The show genuinely deserves it!

Different and Funny
syh-714905 February 2023
I stumbled across this show on a Saturday night looking for something to binge watch for the evening. The first episode drew me in immediately. The story line is completely different than anything I've seen recently or in the past. The humor is great. I literally laugh out loud when watching it! Real comedy! If anything, I might ask, am I the only one who feels like all the characters are dropping the F bomb like crazy....like it's being used repeatedly. It seems unnecessary because the humor and dialogue is already full without the frequent use of it. Just an observation that has not stopped me from watching it. Watch and enjoy.

Way better than I expected.
kcitraro19 June 2022
Just watch the first episode and you'll be engaged with most characters and enjoy. I expected corny humor. But it's only a little corny. It otherwise has that wonderful mix of humor , melancholy and romance. Very enjoyable.

Too awkward for its own good
italoabreuu3 July 2022
The show really tries to be awkward funny, and though it may be funny and warm at times, the lead actress's performance is just awkward and it feels forced, so much so that it becomes an uncomfortable experience to watch it sometimes and this just really takes a lot of the fun away. Plus with the exception of Jackie, Jordan and Joanna's father the characters are all superficial af and as a whole there's just not much to it, unfortunately.

Unique and Fun
sophson-997407 June 2022
I don't understand the negative reviews. This show focuses on topics that aren't often featured in TV shows, and does so with original, absurdist humor--and genuine thoughtfulness. It avoids so many cliches and does its own thing. I'm all for it!

It's a good mix
elilumwow-6601320 June 2022
A good mix of comedy and drama. Vanessa Bayer and Molly Shannon are best in small doses normally, but here it works. It's a thoughtful show with insecurities we all face. A great mix of drama, comedy, and reality. No one is an island.

I Hope it Gets Better than This
leftbanker-12 May 2022
Nope, it gets awfuller, cringier, and less watchable. They seem to be doubling down on painful and awkward, both not good qualities in anything, and especially not in a comedy. Subtrack a star with every passing episode.

Some of the secondary roles are well done, mostly those of her Machiavellian coworkers, namely Darcy, the PA to the boss (who is also great), and Beth Ann, the antagonist to the new girl. This could be watching if they'd get rid of the lead character, or make her less cringy and awkward.

As far as the "humor" goes, it's just awkward situations with one falling down gag that we saw WAY before it happened. Was that intended to make it funnier? It didn't. It was an I Love Lucy gag and I Love Lucy wasn't funny sixty years ago. About the only part I found clever is how they gauge sales on the graph which translates into how much the audience likes the on-air sales rep. This allowed us to actually see that she was finally breaking through.

I like the actress, although she looks like a set of novelty shop fake teeth next to a department store mannequin.

She fakes that she has cancer to win over viewers, but she should just stick with "Idiot" as her handicap. She has no funny lines and relies completely on acting like a complete idiot for humor, if you can call it that, and I don't. The stage direction must have been something like, "I need you to act so incredibly awkward and stupid that it will make viewers embarrassed to be watching. Can you do that?"

Absolutely love this
darrylmsmith26 June 2022
Jennifer Lewis!! What?!?? She is so so good and was an unexpected (I didn't read anything about it, and only knew Vanessa Bayer was in it she's a favorite of mind.

And then Molly Shannon?!? It's all a win win win.

And it really hit home for me because of some personal issues. Made me laugh and gave me some very positive messages.
