Things Are Getting Interesting in Blue Valley
loganh121615 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As Courtney recruits two new members to the Justice Society, we get a good luck into Rick Tyler's life and how he lost his mother and father, Rex Tyler or Hourman.

Summary: Rick was left in the hands of his uncle, a sleezy drunk who believes Rick ruined his life and his chances at fame and fortune and takes his aggression out on him. Courtney is searching for more people she can bring in to the Justice Society with Yolanda. As of last episode, Beth knows that Courtney and Yolanda are superheroes and is eavesdropping on them to figure out what's going on. She manages to get to Courtney's house and find Dr. Midnite's goggles, and learns more about the Justice Society. While this is going on, Pat and Courtney run into Rick who helps with Car trouble, as this is going on Courtney discovers that Rick has some sort of connection to the Hour Glass. This leads her to find him once she finds out from Beth that he is the son of Hourman. They find him a party as they go inside to try and find him. As this goes on, we see that Henry Jr. is having increased headaches and leaves and can now read minds, maybe this is going to lead to him taking up the mantle as Brainwave from his father in the near future. The gang finds Rex and confronts him about his father and his superhero past. They give him the hourglass and tell him that the hourglass gave his father an hour of super-strength. However he decides not to join them and keep the hourglass because it was his father's. He leaves and finds his drunken uncle harassing a waitress at a restaurant. He becomes enraged by this and decides to take out that anger on his truck, utterly wrecking it. Courtney and Yolanda decide to go try and reason with Rick to try and get him to join their cause. However they leave Beth behind to her devices. She learns from the goggles that Rick's parents didn't die in an accident but were murdered by Solomon Grundy. Courtney and Yolanda find Rick at the tree where his parents died and try to reach out to him. He is however not interested in the JSA or giving them the hourglass back. They nearly end up fighting but Beth arrives to show them her discovery. After seeing the death of his parents, he decides to join them to get revenge against the people who killed his parents. In the end scene, we see Pat discover the stolen hero's items in Courtney's room after seeing a green glow emanate from within. Also during this episode we see the Gambler learn about an important device entering Blue Valley soon and the ensuing plot to capture the device for their devious plans as well as the Fiddler demonstrating her powers.

Overall, this is a great episode that shows Rick's past and anger from being abandoned by his parents and left to a terrible guardian. It was also great seeing Beth discover the goggles and her interactions with the AI. I am also glad we saw the Injustice Society in action and can't wait to see what their next plans are for Blue Valley and whatever Project New America is... definitely a 9/10 from me!

Hourman finally gets the spotlight!
jester-4056416 June 2020
I've been anticipating this episode since they revealed the episode titles and it did not disappoint. I will admit I was a bit worried that Rick wouldn't get time to shine, with both him and Beth getting the spotlight together (itself a nice homage to Infinity Inc #21 from 1985 where Hourman 2 and Dr Midnite 2 make their DC Comics debuts), but it worked perfectly. I loved that we opened with a flashback to Rex Tyler (Lou Ferrigno Jr) and Rick as a kid. More JSA flashbacks are always welcome.

Some other bits I liked :
  • that both Pat AND Courtney knew something was up with Rick, but didn't tell each other.
  • The suspenseful music that played as the Hourglass started to glow
  • That Courtney & Yolanda kept wanting to ditch Beth
  • Henry Jr's powers starting to manifest
  • And Rick during his 1 hour of power

The only downside was no major fight for 2 eps in a row now. But now that the gang is almost all together, hopefully that gets sorted next episode.

Two New Heroes
KookShanty17 June 2020
This episode introduced us to two brand new heroes, both of which are very interesting. Beth is a lot of fun, and brings some lightheartedness to the show while Rick is a dark character who packs an emotional punch. Both are portrayed very well and I am excited to see what happens next with them on the team.

JSA grows larger in this build up episode, less action but great character drama
Holt34417 June 2020
The episode begins with a flashback, a great one. It introduces one important character, Rick Tyler, the son of the late Hourman. This wasn't action packed but a more character driven. The plot didn't really move forward that much but we are following Courtney and she wants to remake the JSA and she needs more people. I like Rick Tyler, the actor who play him does a good job at capturing the emotional weight. Beth Chapel is a tricky one, so far I haven't really liked her as she's annoying to say the least, diversity is good though. She'll grow on us, I got a good feeling about it. There were one character that didn't have much screen time and it was the amazing stepfather Pat. He's the heart of the show and in my opinion the most likeable, the arc he got was important though, but I want more of him.

This was actually a great episode, I didn't really notice any bad writing. As it wasn't a very action packed we didn't really get to see many visual effects but the Dr. Mid-Nite AI and goggles was visually impressive and an interesting set of "powers". I think this will be the last build up episode for awhile, the villains have been planning and I believe next episode will be more action packed.

Mixed thoughts on this
jwwalrath-227-8548721 June 2020
The golden age superhero and supervillain stuff remains fun and interesting. However, the teen drama and dialogue remains painfully simple and unoriginal. Cindy may be the most painfully basic teen bully ever written. We get even more parental issues and it's getting exhausting.

Not nearly as good as the previous ones
jdtech19 June 2020
Ive found Hourman interesting so I was looking forward to this one! I like hourman so far however Beth who is dr mid nite is a poor choice! She is very obnoxious and feels out of place from the rest of the team! I hope they tone her down or even better get a better deal mid nite that isn't annoying! I couldn't invest myself fully in this episode as some parts are boring! 7.5/10

Why does this episode deserve an 8?
asb_deutsch19 June 2020
There is not anything new to view. The team-up drama is deja vu and way too predictable. Seems more like a Power Puff team. Beth need to be more mature and Rick less. This seems more of a filler episode. Could have been better. The first three episodes were great. I hope it doesn't go downhill from here.

First episode to lose me
hnt_dnl17 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well, you can't win them all! After Yolanda's amazing arc in Wildcat, the writers follow it up with this dud HOURMAN AND DR MID-NITE, which is easily the weakest episode so far. This episode basically introduces Rick and Beth to the team, sort of, and already, I definitely don't like either one of these characters nearly as much as I do Yolanda. Rick is too angry and Beth is too cringe. At least Rick was decently acted and seems somewhat like a real person. Who the hell wrote the character of Beth? She acts like a pre-teen, not a high-schooler. Mike feels older than her and he's like, what 12 or 13? The girl sounds like she belongs on a Nickelodeon series. And I'm serious when I say that she even low-key looks like a 10-year old! lol Even the youth-oriented CW seems way out of her age range. This character really needs to improve mightily because she's definitely the weak link of the show.

In addition to the dubious new team members, this episode was extremely slow and poorly paced. Also the trend continues of Courtney making dumb decisions. It was really cute and funny at first because she's a very likable character, but it's getting to be grating with her lucking out at every turn after her bad ideas. Also, it's getting annoying with all these random characters like Henry, the Principal and Cindy showing up for like weird, filler 1-minute scenes. And my favorite Pat is way too mature and experienced to be letting his teenaged stepdaughter walk all over him in every episode. It's time for Stepdad to put his foot down and tell this girl who's the parent and who's the kid.

More cliche each episode
aarongnr15 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was riddled with cliche and generic superhero stuff. Seen it millions of times

Starting with Rick's backstory, too the underdeveloped anger issues, to "he dosn't want to join the team" to him doing a full 180 within 5 seconds cause he finds out his dad was murdered?

Cliché after Cliché after Cliché. This was hard to watch. I'll give one more a shot, but then that's it.

Not ugly, but not much better
ADAKENNDY15 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Now it seems that it is correct to give the Watchmen copyright to HBO. The DCU is not good for the drama. Generally, the fifth episode should be a climax or reversal of the plot, but it is still not good and the black girl is not like it. , She messes around with other people's things, and she messes into other people's rooms, this role is inexplicable.

Gah!!! Cliché garbage, do a better job DC
gareth-7544217 June 2020
The only thing missing from this cliché gender swap garbage is the LGBTQ+ character, pretty sure they'll include one soon enough. 0 plot development 0 character development 0 action, the only decent part of this show is Luke Wilson, he gets 3 minutes screen time & about 6 lines of dialogue, just not enough to save this show. This gets 5 stars for its production value & Luke Wilson.

No respect to the (original) superhereos this is a villain show
Ghostcrow_Opin25 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am so angry and sad that this show did not stuck to how it was episode 1 and 2 now its a roller coaster to batwoman level bad.

And I was hoping I did not have to write these reviews.

Villain shoow about Villains that become supervillains because stargirl is the dumbest wannabe hero I've ever seen that includes batwoman.

15min i and nothing has happened yet.

And what is wrong with that black kid who don't got all the tolls in the tool shed? And every single episode i cringe so hard at the brother to because he is a 50yo man.

The black girl shows up at Stargirls house and says they are friends and the mother let her in, when was this happening? I never saw them as friends? Bad writing ? Yes.. And even the mother thinks there is something wrong with her so she tells her to sit where the mother don't need to cringe every time she walks past her.

Glasses have special superpowers so now the black girl have a superpower that she gets from googles that's tells her things what a great superpower.

I am really holding back to call the black girl the R word because she really acts like one.

Nothing special has happened in 35 min now, batwoman vibes. No character development, only googles having superpowers and talk to the dumb black girl.

But maybe it's fitting that the girl who is the dumbest have googles that talk to her so she can act smarter so she wont need to go to a mentall hospital because she is so stupid.

Over 30min in the second bad power comes forth The hourglass powers are almost as cringe as the talking googles.

Googles-Girl now knows everything, even to teleport.

Pat/Stargirls "dad" is now seeing the effects by someones else superpower but just as the toaster in the worst episode about the catgirl nothing happens.

The only good character are the parents and the Villains.

All the so called Superheroes are cringe worthy, they are all boring, nothing is making me root for them.
