Evil yes, genius no
22 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another true crime documentary with 20 minutes of somewhat compelling material, stretched out into three hours. I'll save you some time. Know any manipulative people? Picture those people deciding to rob a bank, then going years without ever being found out. That's it! Nothing genius about getting only a couple grand from a heist and having one person end up dead. Where's the genius part? I see only the sadness of all of those wasted lives. Some people will do anything for money and other people will play them in order to take the money. A tale as old as time, not remotely genius! But some people have documentaries to sell.

Shitbowl
6 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
People who live and work in Alaska seriously don't know how hyperthermia works? You had to pull in somebody's veterinarian cousin to tell you something you could look up on the internet? This is just really bad writing, really formulaic, uninteresting plot "twists" that you can see from a mile away. Not to mention simple, factual things that leave gigantic plot holes that make this pretty much unwatchable.

I'm completely angry because I adore the actors in it and they are wasted. In the right hands this could actually be something creative and engaging. But even Jodie Foster can't save this shitbowl.

Ugh. So bored. I want my two hours back.

Warning: Spoilers
Remind me never to watch another movie based on a comic book ever again. I am a huge fan of David Fincher's work and also love Michael Fasbender, but the writing on this one is just so incredibly dull and unclever. There's absolutely nothing to draw the viewer in. You will anticipate every move. Over an hour in there is a lengthy fight scene. We know that the protagonist survives or else there wouldn't be a rest of the film. So yeah, no tension there. How does this film distinguish itself from the million other either revenge or lone wolf hitman movies? The answer is it doesn't. Oh my gosh how cute that each time the main character uses a new identity it's the name of a 70s or 80s sitcom character. Yawn. Even Tilda Swinton has to deliver the most cheesy, overworked hunter/bear/sodomy joke. You heard it from your uncle during Thanksgiving 2003. And did I mention that you also get to hear the main character's narration repeat the same lines over and over? Are they hoping that it gets more profound each time we hear it? Save some time for yourself and skip this one.

More of this, please!

An honest depiction of families in the Midwest facing judgment for simply being who they are. I'm grateful to all of them for their candor and bravery. I would love to see similar profiles from other so called red states, and also from seemingly progressive enclaves which can also be homes to bigotry. I'm not surprised to see people jumping in here to give as few stars as possible, most likely without having watched a bit of this important program. My wish is that those people at least try to understand what it must feel like to suppress their authenticity in order to exist safely, and what sort of a toll that must take.

So profound, funny, and impactful

What a tremendous gift to your brother, this film! My favorite kind of documentary, one that keeps you pondering it for days afterward. At first we are playfully invited into a world of boys making silly superhero home movies, and along the way and over the years we see the huge impact of how their world was upended by the disappearance of one of their parents. Watch this film and you will see glimpses of your own family, and hopefully also gain some insight into how trauma is passed down with each generation. What kind of wounds are left, and what do we demand of the person who has caused harm? Do they escape unscathed?

"It's white women's niceness that is killing us all."
24 January 2023
Should be required viewing for all white people, not just women. I would love it if the people who gave this movie one star could sit in on one of these dinners and actually listen and participate. It's easy to label something and walk away, but what we all need to do right now as white people is ask ourselves a question featured in this film, and I'm paraphrasing: why is your discomfort with discussing racism more important than the actual lived experiences of the people affected by racism? Sit with those feelings and honestly ask yourself why you are so uncomfortable hearing about racism from two women of color.

Deep as a puddle

Gorgeous and empty, just like the false world depicted. About as insightful as a music video. I appreciated some of the acting, especially the impeccable star, Florence Pugh. Chris Pine is about as menacing as a tree stump. Harry Styles seems game, but hasn't the chops. Ultimately it wants to be respected like your favorite "Black Mirror" episode, but insults your intelligence by taking three times as long to hammer home a premise you could grasp in the first five minutes. I loved the original score, but the chosen period music gives the feeling of eating cold fries in an empty Johnny Rockets.

I have advice for those who are rating this nine and 10 stars: please watch more movies.

WTF with that ending?
8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Is this somebody's idea of a horrible metaphor for gentrification? Some flat acting and dull writing still managed to eke out a few jump scares along the way, but that ending is inexcusable. Oh I see, so the demon in your possessed doll is demanding a soul? And you refuse to offer up your baby girl's, which seems reasonable. (BTW, the baby acted the hell out of this movie, truly better than the actors playing her parents.) And you refuse to offer up your own soul as the baby's mom? Hey you're in luck, the nice Black lady that owns the bookstore not only gave you a free book and free baby clothes but she's also willing to unalive herself so that you can have your nice quiet suburban home life back and make the demon go away.

Prepare to be very disappointed
17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Please spare yourself, there are definitely better things you can do with your life than to sit through this overlong film. Yes, there are big name stars in this. Yes, there is a big-name director involved. But it's almost like the excesses of the 80s were all packed into this one film, which never bothers to provide actual character development, it just jumps around through time repeating the same tired music with lavish sets and period costumes. All expectation and no pay off. Just some de rigueuer gangster violence and completely unnecessary rape scenes. It's actually amazing that such a long film has such thin character development. Robert DeNiro is amazing with what little he has here in the way of script, and all of the other actors are left to make do with the threadbare plot and hacky dialogue.

Please don't bother with this film. I wish I hadn't.

Time travel serial killer fail....but iceberg slow....
9 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's so much to get excited about here: a strong female protagonist investigating mysterious serial murders of women in Chicago. A series packed with accomplished actors. I was hooked from the start! But by mid season it stopped moving forward. It seems that they took what could have been a pretty decent two hour film and stretched it out into a series. When you set up some intriguing mysteries in episode one, but then you keep repeating them for five or six more episodes, I'm sorry but you have officially lost my interest! I just watched the last episode and honestly could not care less. Super disappointed and completely puzzled that anyone would think this is good. Season two?! No thanks!

Amazingly comprehensive and heart-breakingly honest! Bill Cosby's achievements will never be forgotten, not by his fans or his victims. W. Kamau Bell has done excellent work here to fully depict Cosby's genius and his treachery.

Trite, bad writing, acting & directing
12 May 2022
James Franco is horribly miscast in this jumbled mess of bad writing and bad directing. I am intrigued by the subject matter and a big Stephen King fan, but this mess could barely hold my attention and I gave up after three episodes.

For those of you who liked this, I am honestly asking: what do you like about it?

More like a whimper
21 April 2022
Is it possible for women to go through their entire lives and not understand other women? Yes. I really wanted to like this gorgeous anthology series, especially when you start with Issa Rae, who is absolutely wasted here. It's all lost in the writing, which just skims the surface. It's not great television, but it makes for a really pretty soda commercial. Not worth your time.

Required viewing for the well being of all
24 March 2022
What's not to love about pleasure? Informative and funny. Real women, giving their perspectives. Do we know some of this already? Sure. But considering how women's health is so grossly under-researched, it needs this spotlight.

Some will take every opportunity to yuck all over this yum, and for them I say: your mom and your sisters, your aunties and your grandma love sex. Get over it!

I adore Sam Rockwell, but even he can't save this mess. Zero character development, hacky plot, horrible writing. Nobody else is creeped out by the fact that he's 17 years older than Anna Kendrick? Ok.

A gorgeous, irreverent tribute

The filmmakers clearly love their family. This documentary is lush and stylish, as if Wes Anderson was a brother & sister team of documentarians. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews. See this for yourself and decide.

Self indulgent, tired drivel
17 March 2018
Written in five days, and it shows. Writer/director claims profound themes when speaking about this film: overpopulation, world conflicts, environmental collapse. Anyone with eyes knows theses things are happening! What does your film bring to these issues? How does it illustrate them? What solutions does it offer? I'm not going to tell you not to watch "Mother!" but I will say: that's two hours I could have been ironing. And I hate ironing.
