It's Teach, not Thatch !
13 February 2023
Keelhaul the filmakers! I'm up to Ep. 4 and shocked that they give Blackbeard's last name as Thatch, both in the audio and subtitles. It it well known his name was Edward Teach. That is only one example of the historical inaccuracy in this minseries. . As for entertainment, it has some good CGI ships and some bloody violence, but overall lacks interest. Like a soap opera it has nice visuals, but more often things are told rather than shown. The several piratically dressed narrators make it even more so.

Why does it suddenly drop off any mention of the Spanish treasure fleets?

I'd put this in "goofs" which for some reason is not available. What is IMBd's problem? Is 600 words a new requirment? I see a review from 2021 with lss than 100 words!

Season 1. Ep. 28 The Richest Man in Bogota
23 January 2023
60 years later this episode sticks in my mind, although I think some of the backround and explanation of events may have been distorted in my memory, or perhaps misinterpreted at the time. I had not known until now that it was based on a H. G. Wells story. I'd rate it up there with the best of The Twilight Zone episodes. It is too bad there is no way to add a review on the IMDb page for the episode. Is this series available to view today? A 600 character requirement for a review here seems unduly restrictive, as it is hard to remember details about the performance after all this time, and I don't want to give away the plot.

Wrong conclusion, does not dig deeply enough.
29 April 2022
There are many books that go deeper into the association of the Kennedy's and the Mob ,and the activities of the FBI and CIA. What happened to the tapes Otash and other made at her house and Lawford's house? What happened to her diary? There's a lot of information about her death and the coverup. What I've read leads to the conclusion she was murdered by a drug "hot shot." She knew too much and was threatening to tell all. Ohers were killed, such as Dorothy Kilgallen, Hoffa, Oswald, James Forrestal, other Kennedy mistresses, perhaps John Kennedy, Jr., etc.

Should be called "Stevens"
12 June 2021
Most of the film concerns the machinations and compromises of getting the 13 th Amendment, outlawing slavery, passed in Congress. Thaddeus Stevens and the other radical Republicans were more important in this fight than Licncoln. It seems this is called Lincoln to attract viewers. Also, Stevens is depicted as too much of a bufoon. The acting, drsms and settings are terrific. Did you know it was a house Stevens owned in Gettysburg, rented to a balck woman, that Robert E. Lee used as his headquarters for that battle? Stevens willed that he not be buried in a segregated cemetery. The white cemeteries were all "white only" so he was buried in a black cemetery in Lancaster, PA.

Dull and tedious
26 December 2020
Very non-cinematic. The best was that there were many chuckles and wordplay, but overall it was a bore. There was no "action." The continual jumping to flashbacks (with the date written so small It could barely be read) was very irritating and made it hard to follow. The contrast with this turkey caused me to raise my opinion of "Once Upon a TIme in Hollywood." Read some biographies instead. PS - Marion Davies had a stutter, among many other inaccuricies in the film.

Country Music (2019)

Shallow superficial, melodramatic
26 September 2019
The first few episodes were the best. But it concentrates on only a few performers, and gives them all credit. On the origins of Rock'n'roll, there was no mention of "Good Rockin" Roy Brown, although there were a few seconds of Elvis singing that song. No mention of how Elvis copied a black singers sound. Later on, I kept wondering how Burns decided when to stop following a steam of music, such as rock, folk, and consider it "no longer country"? The later episodes became mostly celebrity gossip and sob stories. Peter Coyote speaks as if every sentence is like he's Moses revealing the 10 Commandments, with no change of pace, and it gets very pompous and tiring. Perhaps the fault is Burns for directing him to speak thus? Burn's national parks series had the same pompous narration, as it pushed the outdoors as religious experience.

WIth so many songwriters featured in most of the show (as opposed to traditional music) writers such as Stephen Foster should also be considered part of "country music".

Long shaggy dog story.
6 September 2019
Drags on way too long with filming of western movies, and driving around LA with music blaring. Interesting for those of us who can say "I was there" or "I saw that." Loved the ending, but It didn't need over 2 hours of setup to get there.

Bad as it gets
22 April 2019
It starts with a lot of morgue gruesomeness, which has nothing to do with the rest of this very boring rehash of the exorcist theme. It should had stayed with the dead bodies, instead of delivering this film which was dead on arrival. Anthony Hopkins is the only thing that saves it. Being in this turkey must have been a great embarrassment for him.

What Brett Kavanaugh deserved in high school

Great payback to the high school jocks. mean girls and bullies. It's too bad the Brett Kavanaugh types only get justice in fiction.

Cult failure.
31 March 2018
There's really no story, just a whacked-out man and his family tussling with lions over and over. People do get hurt making it. It was a vanity project that no one would fund, so they had to scrimp and save for 5 years to raise funds. Most of the cast cannot act. It's like a bad home movie, but with lions and other wild animals. The only interest is to see many of the pets of Tippi Hedren and family, including Melanie Griffith. Also of interest are the many appearances of Togare, the lion once owned as a pet by Satanist Anton LaVey.

Boring fan-boy fest
31 March 2018
They act like they've been hitting the bottle. Nothing here you haven't heard in other commentaries on the DVD, such as "The Making of Roar", or if you're read Tippi's book. Don't bother.

Chaney's great; the story is slim
15 June 2016
The scariest thing about Sergeant Chaney is his face! There is little rigor of basic training shown, and most of that is because someone deserved it. It's light comedy, weak love story and a little action in the last part. I wonder how many rubes enlisted because of this recruiting poster of a film. Recruit Haines is an unlikeable twit, who tried to scam a free train trip out of Uncle Sam, then splitting for the TIjuana racetrack. He is given "the treatment" which is little indeed. Recruits run around town and get away with almost anything. There is a lot of silly Marine-Gob rivalry. I liked the San Diego train and trolley, the real Navy buildings in San Diego, and the ships at sea. It's wonderful to see Lon Cheney without make-up. Overall: weak. I now see why this movie hasn't been shown at any of the Silent Film Festivals I attended.

Star Bores
26 January 2016
Other than a few good moments, it's he same old same old of recent youth-oriented movies: human and spaceship chases, fights, explosions. A video game and thrill ride set up. We get lot of marching storm troopers, actors, the obligatory alien bar scene. There's none of the interesting characters, touches of humor, or drama of the original. To see Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher be interesting, watch their TV interviews, not this. The other actors lack appeal. Even if it wasn't a rehash of the firs few episodes, it would lack appeal. In comparison, I liked the Bond movie Skyfall, and all Hunger Games films much more than this. Caprica and Battlestar Gallactica are also much better.

A nice fantasy
9 October 2014
I liked this a lot once I realized it is fantasy, rather than history. Disney and Mrs, Travers are both extreme caricatures. Disney is depicted as an overgrown, insensitive kid, a boob, rather than the actual "Hollywood's Dark Prince". The tape played at the end of the film shows that she was not nearly as whacked as played in the film. The California outdoor sequences and dialogue were stereotypical and silly, and the supporting actors playing Disney employees are also silly stereotypes. The obviously California landscape standing in for Australia was distracting, reminding one of movie made long ago when that was the practice.

The story of her troubled young life is touching, as is Disney's telling of his early life, leading to the eventual explanation of the title.

Trash
29 April 2014
Aimed at teenagers and frat boys. Lots of flashing images and sounds. That's what you see in most movies today, although this lacks the car chases and explosions that maintain interest in today's short-memory audiences. The sound is so bad on DVD I had to turn on subtitles. Watch it if you like boring activity by Hollywood doper a-holes. When it comes to sex: lots of talk, little action. They, and the show, are extremely irritating obnoxious bigmouth lowlifes. They are ignorant and total game-playing fakes. I love "Californication" and I hate "Entourage". The 4 episodes on the first disk are enough to convince me: it's garbage.

Five stars for "The Return of Starbuck"
20 January 2014
"The Return of Starbuck was fun, with great humor. The rest were mostly very cheap looking, with silly lame stories, and set on earth. It really dragged. There were some scenes about Galactica in space, and some dogfights. Old Adama seemed weary and listless. Some of the explanations of how they were evading the cylons when traveling to earth were not believable. Baltar was one of the best parts of the original Battlestar Galactica and is sorely missed here. Where is the Cylon Imperious Leader?

I'm glad I watched it all so I didn't miss the one great episode- the last.

Mixed bag.
23 October 2013
There is some great drama, especially in the later part, but this has far too much filler. Especially near the beginning, it is ponderous and boring, with too many long views of the cast of thousands, and long closeups of staring faces.

I fast forwarded over many sections which were nothing but people riding or walking or milling around, with no advancement of the story. The film would benefit with a good editing,

The acting was generally wooden and unconvincing and reminded me of a poor copy of a De Mille sword & sandal epic. Only Iphegenia herself, later in the film was a convincing, moving performance.

2/3 slapstick; 1/3 Lugosi
25 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Much like an "Abbott and Costello meet ...Lugosi" type movie. Nat Pendleton's bizarre and irritating yet somehow endearing slapstick is a major part of the film. The reporter and maid are also rather irritating characters like you find in the old screwball comedies. The midget crawling all over is one of many zany touches, and false leads. Legosi is earnest in playing it straight, as always, and he gets some good lines off. It's a treat to see Lugosi in color.

One thing that's irritating today is the (Theramin?) sound every time it flashes back from the body to what happened, because that sound was later appropriated as the "UFO" sound and is now so identified with them that it feels very wrong here.

Uneven mix of good history and religio-patriotic sentimental hokum
2 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The good: The historical information about the early years, about John Muir, Mather, Rockefeller and the railroads. Coverage of the tension between nature-use or "sanctuary vs. tourist resort". The fights to save various areas and their incorporation into the parks, to prevent spoilage of the parks, and the move to save predators, such as the reintroduction of wolves. The beautiful nature photography, and the historical photos.

The bad: Too many talking heads, such as creepy William Cronon. Peter Coyote has been overused as a narrator, and his voice here is too pretentious and sanctimonious. Too many tedious descriptions of traveler impressions of parks. Too many statements about values of wildness which say or imply they can only be found in national parks.

The ugly: The violins and weepy sentimentality. Break out the Kleenex! The phony religious and patriotic sentiment, such as the early parts about how the parks are primarily a place to worship a god. Later this becomes a claim it's the patriotic way to be part of America. Too much use of the Lincoln Memorial. Later for example, we get "We tend to put our highest ideals, our highest dreams in our national parks, therefore they function like consciences" - they improve your relation with your fellow man. Gimme a break!

I love the National Parks. I really like several of Burn's productions, but was bored by "The War". This is almost that bad.

Here is an example of a great presentation on the same subject, in a specific place: http://www.bigcypressswamp.org/bcs/home.html Elam Stoltzfus knows how to do it right.

The Gaucho (1927)

Not all silent films are great.
11 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This was hyped at the 2009 SF Silent Film Festival as dark, unconventional and more to 21st century tastes than most silent films. I found it a combination of over-the-top silliness with heavy-handed religious tedium. Perhaps it can be described as surreal. Unfortunately I did not find that entertaining.

There is a bit more sexuality than in other Fairbanks films, but nothing compared to Valentino. His continual silly cigarette tricks. too-fast jumps, Velez's arms-on-hips heaving-breast stances, the house dragging scene, and the German expressionist style fake landscapes, walls that crumble at a touch, and the constant performance of miracles, take away from any feeling of reality. They say El Gaucho is the prototype for Mickey Mouse, and the movie does have a cartoon-like character, except for the religious parts. Perhaps the religious element is part of the formula to "get away with anything as long as you throw in religion".

For me, it can't hold a candle to The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse or even The Eagle. Fairbanks movies that I prefer include The Mark of Zorro and The Black Pirate.

The great Brian Wilson
21 March 2009
Archival footage, the Beach Boys music and 1997 interview soundbites, make an interesting look at Brian Wilson and his creative process. We get some history of the music scene and what was going on in society at the time.

The well-known connection to Charles Manson feels like it's brought in as pure exploitation. It's another of those cheezy attempts to show some connection or inevitability of a progression from the counterculture to evil. Fortunately that's only a small part of the film at the end. It's worth watching for the historical Beach Boys footage, the interviews with Brian Wilson, and musicians and producers who were around the Beach Boys back when.

High drive-in rating: blood and breasts!
5 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Sex in odd places, death by strange methods, nudity and bondage. Even a bad sheriff.

Full frontal photo session. Sex in gas station bathroom. Bondage and wrist slashing. Roaches. Acid, shovel, crowbar, knife, crowbar, cross and mulcher -fu.

Similarities to Last House on the Left.

It begins with a B&W sequence of a chainsaw attack on a couple in a trailer. Then it jumps in color to 25 years later with a professor and students going to a rural state college research station, where an attack had taken place on 3 college students (25 years before). It has been long abandoned, and the locals they meet on the way there act strange about the place...

Based on c.1994 video version "Survival 101".

Good for insomnia
1 August 2005
Yes Pigeon and Coburn are great, and it's interesting to watch them, although Coburn seems rather restrained and dull here. It's enjoyable to view Seattle, Victoria and Salt Lake City of 1970's, and the period cars and clothing. That's all the good in this boring film. The dialog is incredibly bad, as is most of the acting. Ray and Sandy's motivations seem forced and unlikely. I've seen this "training to be a pickpocket" routine several times before. There's a long build up, leading to nothing. Better to catch an episode of "Streets of San Francisco", or one of the many great crime/caper movies. To name a few, there are Bedtime Story, remade as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Grifters, Paper Moon, The Sting, and best of all, House of Games.

Evil meets its reward
12 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
4 men in the old West must make a several day long crossing of a desert pass. 2 of them are scum - they're litterbugs (!) and drunks, and hope to rape and even kill a "squaw". It's Apache country, but they feel safe if they keep moving. They come upon a strange isolated cabin in the high country... The exact nature of what they encounter is unclear, but the result is not.

NOT an action movie, but a surrealistic fairytale. If considered as a standard rape & revenge plot, it becomes very tedious. The acting is poor. There is overuse of cuts to a bird or birds watching in the bushes. The youngest cowboy appears to be a decent kid, and the 4th member won't take part in what the worst two men do, so there is an exploration of the nature of not trying to prevent evil, or of simply being associated with it. Joan Stapleton looks a little like Barbara Steele. The video I saw from "Obscure Video & DVD" had very aged color. Most color, except the sky, was brown to orange, but it fit very well with the surreal feeling of the movie.

Greed (1924)
7/10
Flaws of Motivation
9 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
We can't blame the director, since the film was "butchered", but what I saw was seriously flawed. I've seen many great silent films, and this isn't in the same league with them. "Intolerance" is a better film on a similar subject.

Motivation is the worst problem. It feels wrong that someone upon winning a lottery would refuse to spend a cent of it, and suddenly become the world's worst miser. Her love for the money becomes more important than any other human emotion or comfort. We read of old people like this dying filthy and destitute, with a hidden fortune, but the sudden onset here feels wrong. Some of the greed shown is created because of the stinginess of others. The husband has a strange lack of influence over the wife, especially for the time, perhaps because the human love and friendships in the film are shallow and phony. It is a dark movie.

There are some terrific views of streetcars and street scenes in early San Francisco; of interurbans and outside Shellmound Park in the East Bay. The Death Valley scenes probably had more visual impact then, as today they seem commonplace. So I felt the images as well as the story petered out to an unsatisfying end.
