Succession (2018)
It's okay I guess
Solid enough entertainment I guess if you like sweary bullying, dick swinging contests and obscene wealth shoved down your throat or up an orefice. Problem is I care very little (polite version) about what happens to these characters so what's the point?
Scenes from a Marriage (2021)
Remarkable
Remarkable filmmaking. Great acting, great writing, a deep dive into long term relationships. Find the time to watch this, even if you're not jaded and middle aged. ;0)
The Sopranos (1999)
Clichéd, regurgitated, tired. Been there, seen it done better
Clichéd regurgitated storylines and characters that have been done better before and elsewhere. I guess if you like Donnie Brasco, you'll dig this.
Undine (2020)
Tough watch
If you haven't read up on it, you may struggle to unravel this. Frustrating watch, lost interest towards the end when I couldn't even get close to what was happening.
High Fidelity (2020)
Just great
Giving this a 10 on the strength of episode 1, way better than the lame 7ish average score above. Music aside, just a lot of fun.
Ramy (2019)
Fabulous
Hadn't seen anything this good in a long, long time.
The Night Manager (2016)
Average and already looks dated
Decent premise but poorly cast and scripted. Way too many intense glares per episode.
Jumped ship before the last episode because life is too short as it is.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
It's okay
Sweet and vaguely interesting but no more. Might appeal to under-12s?
Fargo (2014)
Gory but masterful in snatches
Gore aside, episodes 2-5/6 in season 1 are examples of masterful filmmaking in terms of character, writing and story development. Great performances, fabulous atmosphere, you connect as a viewer. Then the engine blows, it nosedives and burns beautifully but it could've been so much more.
Homecoming (2018)
Stunning filmmaking
Storyline, script, performances, all bang on the money. Season 1 is superb.
Red Oaks (2014)
Fabulous stuff
For those of a certain age, perpetually preoccupied by nostalgia, this show is damn near perfect. Fabulous stuff.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016)
Very close but no cigar
Not quite as good as the original but still very nice, it warms up and it's devastatingly nostalgic to watch.
Lupin (2021)
Not bad but no cigar
Half decent entertainment but gets progressively more mundane and predictable. The scene where the cop who's been taken off the case pores over the evidence whilst repeating aloud all the various elements to the investigation is painfully dull writing.
Away (2020)
Better than expected
Bit glitzy and high-fivey and not without flaws/clichés but generally enjoyable, moving and with some solid messages.
La Befana vien di notte (2018)
Bloody awful
Did I mention that this is bloody awful? Crude, rude and not much Yule. Tiresome scenes that were still going on when I came back from doing the dishes. Avoid.
Modern Family (2009)
Best sitcom since Seinfeld
Absolutely fabulous in every way. Astute, hilarious - the very best medicine during lockdown.
