I was pleasantly surprised when I started watching this. I did have some reservations about whether Eddie Izzard was a fit for the role, but by the end one the first episode I was in.
From there I really enjoyed the next eight or so episodes but by episode 9 or 10 it started falling apart. I'd say the reasons for that are partly the acting and partly the writing. I think both Izzard and Minnie Driver are miscast Izzard just isn't wired to project the head of an Irish Traveller renegade faction that's depicted here. Minnie Driver makes a valiant effort but also falls short with the ex-con, drug addicted mother.
In the episode that killed it for me, Izzard in a huff about his wife's drug use, supposedly ingests a lot of crystal meth by literally tossing a bag into his own face. Later in the episode as the drug takes effect - for some reason it took quite a while, we see Izzard in a supposedly frantic while his wife is trying to calm him down over the phone.
The acting is bad and that's compounded by the ridiculous misconception of how such a scenario might play out. It really doesn't take much to get someone with legit experience in the writer's room to make sure they get it right.
Regarding Izzard, I never felt he was the ideal person for the role but he was borderline passable for a while. It was the crystal meth frenzy that was clearly outside his range.
