The Riches (2007–2008)

Some very good qualities but doesn't hold up
28 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was pleasantly surprised when I started watching this. I did have some reservations about whether Eddie Izzard was a fit for the role, but by the end one the first episode I was in.

From there I really enjoyed the next eight or so episodes but by episode 9 or 10 it started falling apart. I'd say the reasons for that are partly the acting and partly the writing. I think both Izzard and Minnie Driver are miscast Izzard just isn't wired to project the head of an Irish Traveller renegade faction that's depicted here. Minnie Driver makes a valiant effort but also falls short with the ex-con, drug addicted mother.

In the episode that killed it for me, Izzard in a huff about his wife's drug use, supposedly ingests a lot of crystal meth by literally tossing a bag into his own face. Later in the episode as the drug takes effect - for some reason it took quite a while, we see Izzard in a supposedly frantic while his wife is trying to calm him down over the phone.

The acting is bad and that's compounded by the ridiculous misconception of how such a scenario might play out. It really doesn't take much to get someone with legit experience in the writer's room to make sure they get it right.

Regarding Izzard, I never felt he was the ideal person for the role but he was borderline passable for a while. It was the crystal meth frenzy that was clearly outside his range.

A True Gem
4 April 2024
I was misled by a couple of reviews I scanned before watching this. I can understand this movie is not for everyone, but for me it was a powerful experience. The reviews I mentioned focused on the dynamics and intricacies of couple's relationship, but it goes much deeper than that. They're not wrong, but I'd say it's about the inner being of these two people and their relationship with life itself. It takes on a journey through the trauma experience of one character after a tragic accident.

I haven't seen anything quite like this. In a way it reminded me of Ray Fosse's 'All That Jazz' from 40 years ago.

It's very well done overall. I give it an A+ in pretty much all the key factors: Concept,.editing, writing and acting. I've become an instant fan of both lead actors. Sienna Miller is radiant and so authentic as is Diego Luna. Their performances are integral and - I think essential to the movie because it's the depth of each of these two characters that makes the experience what it is.

Pathetic effort
26 March 2024
Given the packaging I expected something like Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio. But not only does it not make that grade it doesn't even have such aspirations. The only true and believable words from the script, spoken by Mel Gibson: "This is a bad B-movie.

There's something very off about Mel Gibson in this role. His acting seems adequate but he's just not believable. The awful writing sure doesn't help.

The sequence of events that take place in the build-up do not quite add up. Then the twists and turns, which are indeed surprising, succeed only in making you sick to your stomach. I am a fan of pushing the envelope but this is an aberration. It just doesn't add up.

Ink (I) (2009)

A work of ART!
6 February 2024
From the very beginning as I watched this film, it triggered various thoughts in my head as well as recollections of mysterious events that I'd discarded for not fitting in to my reality paradigm.

A variety of those experiences - or sometimes just the essence of them, started to reform in my consciousness. I know that art is supposed to trigger feeling and emotions, which I've often experienced but I've never before experienced a trigger this powerful, because this film seems to have delved very deep into my subconscious. It reached into a wide range of human formative experience from the Id, ego to the shadow. This includes suppressed memories that shaped my self-image and world view. Does that sound crazy? Seems to me like it might as I write this review but it's a genuine account of my experience.

On a more practical level I recalled watching some of Scorcese's early work. Not that there's any correlation in styles between them. Instead I ruminated on the fact that there must be dozens of brilliant film makers of Scorcese's caliber that have come along. New generations that have evolved along with technology that they've adapted in their toolkit. I hadn't thought much about them because I hadn't seen their work, but now, watching Ink, I surely was!

This work of art is nothing short of brilliant. It's a free flowing stream of consciousness that is uncannily relatable and even familiar. I guess it's possible that it's just me, but I'd be surprised if that's the case.

This film is worthy of your time and attention to say the least.

The Gambler (III) (2014)
4/10
Potential was there but...
19 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Gambler has all the ingredients needed - in my mind anyway, to make for a good film. An amazing cast and generally sound acting. The plot premise makes sense and is a familiar one. But the problem stems with the main protagonist.

I'm a fan of Wahlberg's earlier work and thought he really shined in Boogie Nights. I think he's miscast here and in a number of ways. His character, Jim Bennet is from an Old money well-to-do family: that's not Wahlberg and he's not a good enough actor to pull it off. Neither does he make a convincing "associate professor" of English Lit,.so that's two strikes. But the one aspect of his character, the self-destructive, rudderless, lost soul is right in his wheel house and in my opinion, it's the only thing that salvages the film - along with the fantastic supporting cast.

So my rating would have been 5 or 6, but for the ending, which is so formulaic and nonsensical in that charming Hollywood sort of way that it left me feeling as empty and Wahlberg's character. And I was left wondering if he had a hand in that ending...I won't go into it and potentially ruin it for anyone who is about to take the plunge, but if you're a fan of realism, you'll see what I mean.

Pure (2019)

Gets Old Fast
12 January 2024
After seeing the previews and reviews I gave this one a look thinking it had potential.. The premise was unusual and there clearly is a bold and edgy feel in the presentation and images. All of that makes for a good 15 minutes and that it delivers. The problem is, beyond those 15 minutes, it goes NOWHERE.

I should qualify by disclosing I watched only the first episode, so It's possible it get's better, and normally, when that's the case, I'll stick for a while to give it a chance. But Pure was so adamant on pounding the viewer over the head with the theme over and over, so often that it struck me as a one trick pony. In my opinion, a good series either grips you right away or short of that, show you potential for theme or character development. I saw no evidence of that potential

The subject matter in this along with the rave reviews also makes me wonder if I'm understanding the up and coming Gen Y & Millenial generations' sensibilities. As a late baby boomer I am accustomed to no holds barred mode of humor, while the 'new wave' shuns offensive topics, especially those involving physical or mental handicaps. I would think 'Pure' violates those standards, since it makes light of someone who suffers with a serious neurosis...what am i missing?

Speaking of things that are offensive, for me it's shows that lack depth and imagination and try to make up for those shortcomings with gratuitous and perverse sex, which is what this show does.

So much potential but falls short
5 January 2024
This movie has all the ingredients but somehow it doesn't deliver. I'll have to watch it again but I'm putting it off because the lighting is so bad, it's too much work trying to figure out what's on the screen.

This film is a mystery - not the genre but a mystery in terms of establishing what the film maker was trying to do, The idea is really intriguing - so good that it roped me right in. But the set up and premise of a guy who shows up at a desolate farm claiming to be a government agent and essentially tells the guy he's drafted for a "years" long assignment is bizarre; especially considering the mostly compliant response. Maybe this would be believable in a certain context, but the viewer isn't given much on the state of the world aside from Earth being a dying planet. And its just in this way that the movie has what I condsider an uneccesarily cryptic style. Events unfold but we're not aware until after the fact. I can appreciate that some of this is by design but there's way too much of a disconnect trying to understand the characters' motives. This occasionally includes some strange, puzzling dialog.

The best thing about this movie is Saoirse Ronan - first time watching her and I'm an instant fan! There are great performances by each of the three leading characters, it's just too bad the plot and editing didn't do justice to the acting.

SO BAD it's offensive
31 December 2023
I doubt I've ever seen a movie worse than this one, and I'm sure I've never seen a cast this good get completely wasted. This thing is so bad that I'm doubting I'll be able to express just how extremely bad it is. There are some nice images in the cinematography, but citing them would be something like commenting on the nice weather at your execution.

The entire effort is a waste, so much so that it's baffling to me how such an abomination can get made. In fact, 'waste' is a word that keeps coming to mind regarding this trash. I huge waste of time for viewers, a waste of talent and money. My hope is this garbage might help stem the flow of sewage that we know as Hollywood movies. If Hollywood were on trial for their lack of imagination and shallowness, this movie could serve as Exhibit A.

Poorly conceived, and just awful
18 December 2023
I can suspend disbelief about as well as the next person but in the case of La Brea, I think you need to be comatose for it to work. The plot had enough to draw me in and the first few minutes seemed ok, but that was it, literally. While the acting is somewhat acceptable in some cases, there come exchanges that are on par with middle school drama class, lines are poorly delivered with awful timing. I got the sense that maybe there was a mad rush to get this out, because I can't imagine why it's so bad otherwise,

I have no reservations saying that this series is a complete waste of time no matter what your tastes are.

Mostly good
15 November 2023
I had to watch this if only for the fact that I was intrigued by the extreme variance in peoples' reactions; it's all or nothing, a "1" or "10". After watching I'm satisfied that I get why that is. It all comes down to what a person is looking for in a movie. If you're looking for slick production, solid acting and conventional plot you're not going to like it. But people who prefer something that presents ideas that stretch the imagination and delves into the supernatural it works! To say much more would mean spoilers, which I'd rather not include here. I'll just say that I do value ALL factors at each end of the spectrum and gave it a 6, because while I appreciated the story, I found some of the quirky production and mediocre acting distracting.

Awful
3 August 2023
Disclaimer: I only watched the first 12 minutes, and the only reason it was that long was i couldn't find the remote. I don't think my standards are very high when it comes to acting. I'm more interested in good writing and plot.

The acting in Noise is on par of high school freshman drama class. That might seem like exaggeration, sad to say it's not at all. I can't believe Netflix would air something this bad The plot didn't seem much better either and while you might say I didn't watch long enough to judge, what I can say with absolute certainty is that when the acting is this bad, the plot really doesn't matter because it's impossible to lock in to the story.

Nope (2022)

Convoluted and boring
18 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to this, with high expectations. I'd bought into the buzz around Jordan Peele. Topically it's right up my alley and seemed to have all the elements that push the right buttons for me. To say it fell short is an understatement. This is a very bad, poorly conceived movie.

Overall the acting is good and so is the dialog. The special effects are cool too. But the plot is oddly meandering and convoluted. It feels like it's being made up on the fly, by a not-so-good story-teller.

When the action started I expected some kind of reveal with a hook to pull me in as a viewer, but it never happened. In this case, the aliens are the 'boogie men'. It's clear they are vicious and deadly, and they're carnivorous but it doesn't go any deeper. There's no discernible rhyme or reason to what they're doing besides enjoying a few meals.

They are clearly superior and can do whatever they want, whenever they want, but for some reason it takes them a painfully long time to make another move.

By that time, for me, the whole thing fell apart. Scenes that aimed for suspense, thrills and chills came off totally flat.

Unfortunately I can't recommend it.

Top notch indie
21 February 2023
I initially skipped this movie because it's listed as a RomCom, but came back to it eventually and glad i did. If you're a fan of indie movies, you'll love this one.

It features a great cast, with genuine, relatable characters. Many are played by recognizable top-notch character actors and a really nice touch is the use real poker players with speaking parts in some key scenes.

Although it uses a familiar theme of a hopeless gambling degenerate digging himself a deep hole, the way it proceeds is fresh, genuine and when it's funny - it's very, very funny!

Jake Johnson is the perfect anti-Hollywood leading man. His Eddie character tries hard to be smooth but can't quite pull it off, which is what makes him relatable. When he hooks up with Eva, they make a good-looking couple, but still far from the Ken & Barbie-types that are the usual we've come to expect.

Some of what transpires is fairly predictable, but there are enough interesting twists that it doesn't feel at all formulaic. It's topped off, I thought, by an interesting and unique circumstance by which the main character is saved from himself.

I'd highly recommend this one.

Deadwood: The Movie (2019 TV Movie)
4/10
Dull ending to a fantastic TV series
29 December 2022
I loved Deadwood the series. I believe it was one of the best shows on TV and had everything you can ask for; a great plot, excellent dialogue, top notch acting and authenticity with meticulous attention-to-detail that really transported the viewer to that time and place. It's so good that after watching the movie, I had the thought that it might not be fair to expect more of the same in the movie.

Deadwood the Movie does not live up to the same standard. It's more of a watered-down, contrived celebratory parade where each of the remaining characters is given their moment to shine.

Unlike the series, which was gritty, genuine and captivating, the movie came off as a neatly packaged but lackluster encore of aging and tired characters.

And speaking of the characters, I had to look up the historical records to see how many years passed between the end of the series and the movie's beginning. It's just about 12 years, roughly the same period of time that passed between series end and the movie release. But that being the case, I have to wonder why do the characters look 25 years older? While that in itself is a minor detail it ties in to a the larger issue of how the movie was conceived. In this viewing experience one gets the sense this movie was made not to tell a story as much as to provide for an elaborate curtain call for the characters. As great as this cast was, this didn't work and was a misuse of talent.

Finally there were no moments of intensity and high drama unlike the series which was packed with them.

I would say that, even for those who loved the series, you can safely skip the movie, but I've noticed several rave reviews from other loyalists, so who knows? You may want to give it a try if you have the time, just don't expect much.

A true story of our sad state of affairs
19 December 2022
This is a documentary about a con man who impersonated a cop calling fast food restaurants and convincing the manager on duty that a female in the restaurant had stolen money from another customer. The caller then convinced the manager to take the woman into the back room and have her remove her clothing and conduct various weird or perverted acts in the name of justice.

Tough to know where to begin. It's hard to believe this happened - but I vaguely remember hearing about it on the news. The perpetrator has to be a sick, despicable individual. Those who were fooled are utterly stupid and/or brainwashed people who revere authority over humanity.

I agree completely with other reviewers who've say this is a horrible crime, the crime itself it not at the top of my list. What was more troubling, and should concern us all is that our society has reached the point where such a thing can happen over and over again. It's not so much a case of a random bunch of stupid people taken in by a criminal. More accurately it signals our complete separation from reality and our need to be told what to do. I found watching this was sickening, as it comes with the realization that we are at the mercy of the sharks that rule us. The story told here shows what has resulted from the measures they've taken to ensure we follow blindly and thank them for their guidance.

This story happened from the mid-90s to 2011 and was basically the canary, dead in the coal mine.

Thanks to our government and it's manipulation of the educational system and mass media, critical thinking is obsolete. The old phrase QUESTION AUTHORITY is meaningless to generations X,Y and Z. We stand at the crosswalks and wait to be told to cross the street in the brave new world and perverts like David Stewart can tell people he's a cop and they turn into mindless, compliant zombies who will torture innocent people on command.

Why is it we're conditioned not to question cops when they're supposed to be public servants? And for that matter why are all cops now looking like they're equipped for combat duty? This is a reflection of the type of society we've become and if you're in your right mind, it should make you sick.

I've noticed that many reviewers pour all their emotions into the sick sadsack that committed the crime and the stupid people who followed his orders. While that is deplorable, the large issue here is our future.

This documentary is effectively a case study that exposes this sociuety's sickness. Yes, it's worth watching.

God Awful
21 November 2022
The best I can say for Stallone is it's amazing he can deliver his lines with a straight face. To watch this series you'll have to be a master suspending disbelief and a Stallone worshipper.

I could write a long list pointing out holes in the plot, but the quality of this production is so bad it's not even worthy of nitpicking critiques. Everything that happens is so farfetched that it simply makes no sense. It's astonishing when you think about the fact that Stallone was originally a writer. The writing is bad. But what I noticed was that when it came to Stallone's lines the writing was noticeably worse, and not just a little, a LOT WORSE!! Which leads me to thinking this is a man who has completely lost touch with reality.

Feel free to give it a try if you're angry with your lot in life and have a double digit IQ, it's possible you may feel better watching Sly operate. Otherwise don't bother

What I.

I'd rate a 10 for Seasons 1 & 2, ZERO thereafter
17 November 2022
Actually I stopped watching Episode 3 of Season 3. I can't believe Netflix invested so much money and allowed such bad casting changes that absolutely ruined the series.

The changes, especially for the characters playing the two sisters were a complete miss and just blew the whole experience to bits for me.

I really enjoyed seasons 1 & 2 and was in rare (for me) binge mode. I've read some ludicrous media reviews praising Olivia Coleman. Not only does she fall short filling her predecessor's shoes, but her demeanor, mannerisms and way of speaking are so unlike the queen's that it's impossible to overlook. So is Helena Bonham Carter as Margaret, since it seems she's basically playing herself with a brit accent. It's a bizarre experience, like having a rug pulled out from under you.

What's even worse is the chemistry between both couples is completely changed. I keep reading critics saying what a great job Coleman does ensuring a seamless transition. They must have been paid off by Netflix. All I saw was the same character she always plays. Tobias Menzies is actually ok as the prince. But it's impossible to imagine the two of them interacting at all like their predecessors. In other words, when Season 3 began, it was as if the show i had watched for two seasons ended. Awful.

Just bad
3 November 2022
I was attracted by the movie's description, which included the words bold, dark and suspense. The reality is the film has some decent ideas and imagery but is a complete fail with the delivery. Ricci is ok and certainly looks the part and seems to give it her all, but the writing is so bad it's impossible to judge any of the acting.

Disclaimer: I stopped watching after 45 minutes...It just reached a point where it felt like a complete waste of time. The direction and editing actually seemed confused and scattered. For example, during the build up of Ricci's character being spooked some of the images and sound effects were disassociated from the character's experience. I'm not sure how this movie ended up like it did, but it almost feels like the filmmaker put it together in isolation and lost all perspective. There were a few points where I just started wondering what the intent was.

I'd definitely skip this one.

An authentic experience
19 September 2022
I read many of the reviews here and I have little to add sincebelieve it's pretty much all been said. Watching 1900 makes for a memorable experience. I'd say Bertolucci's epic is a true work of art and the cinematography is stunning at times.

The only point, from my perspective, that I haven't seen is in regard to how women are depicted. Very often the women who get highlighted in 1900 are loud and obnoxious; often helpless but quite able to get our attention. I can't help but feel Bertolucci had an ax to grind against the fairer sex, although I'm sure he loved his mama.

As one who is familiar with the culture, I would have liked to see a more comprehensive representation of females. For sure there are women characters here who are very admirable and distinct but they are lost in the action

Still it's a must-see! It's a trip back in time to a world that no longer exists.

A beautiful, sad and poignant film
2 July 2022
I didn't expect much here, although I'm a big fan of Julianne Moore. This is a great movie, perfectly cast and relatable story. The writing and acting is top notch.

Most notable among a great cast is the child playing Maisey. She puts in an amazing, unforgettable performance. In fact, I'd say just watching this kid makes the movie more than worthwhile. However, in this case it's all good!

Great story, unfortunate casting
2 July 2022
I most enjoy movies that I can get lost in, and become totally absorbed in the story and characters. I really enjoyed the first 30 minutes or so and I thought the story itself was great throughout. James Franco is the problem. He seems to have a way of hamming up every part he plays so his overbearing self overruns the character he's trying to portray. I can never buy the character he's playing for very long. But If you're one of those people that like him as an actor, I think you'll enjoy the movie. The big personality of the central character, Tommy Wiseau does help camouflage Franco's hammy presence, but not for long.

Hidden Gem; clever and very funny

I understand why some people didn't get this movie. It's unique and way offbeat. Personally I hate Hollywood movies and I especially like i ndie movies with interesting and believable characters - that's what this is.

A wacky, gen Y priest catches up with on of his boyhood idols and convinces him to go on a short camping trip. The two main characters are excellent as are the supporting cast. There are some really funny scenes interspersed throughout if you're patient and to me the plot kept me fully engaged.

Nothing to see here and I can't imagine why they went to the trouble of making this...

Very well done
26 November 2021
My favorite movies are those that best imitate life and do it so well I am absorbed completely in the experience. If you're like me you'll love this movie. It's so well done it feels like looking in on a tragically dysfunctional family living in abject poverty in the impoverished Ozarks.

The acting is excellent, most especially Lawrence and John Hawkes.

But what's most impressive to me is the film maker's willingness to give us an accurate, gritty, unadulterated depiction of what life is like in rural poverty. It's work that takes courage to create, something you'd never see coming out of Hollywood.

Surprisingly good - layered social commentary hits the mark
25 September 2021
Not a horror fan, but I always appreciate thoughtful sci-fi which is how I'd classify this one. The story roped me in quickly and kept me gripped - at least through 6 & 3/4 of its seven episodes. Very good acting and writing with the exception of a few turns on the soapbox for a couple of the central actors hammering home key points.

One thing I found to be very clever and timely is the depiction of how "normal, everyday people" go way off the rails in the course of their religious beliefs, cultural influences and the effects of "group think". Sadly I was reminded of the current state of the world we live in.

While it could have been condensed, I wasn't bored at any point until the last 15 minutes or so which were unnecessarily heavy on the sap.
