Dunkirk (2017)
8/10
The modern-day masterpiece we've been waiting for...
22 July 2017
Dunkirk may not be the greatest war film ever made, as against to popular opinion where Paths of Glory, Saving Private Ryan and Platoon might be the stronger contenders. It is not the best of Nolan the story-teller as Inception and Dark Knight will always remain the best. Dunkirk is a whole another beast from the world of cinema. It is messy, chaotic and sometimes incomprehensible, yet a beautiful jumble of visuals. This is the masterpiece of Nolan the director.

The evacuation of Dunkirk has always been portrayed as the aftermath of the blunder of Allied forces in France. For Great Britain, it was a moment of survival and resistance that helped them to swing back against the Nazis while for the French it was a humiliating instance of defeat and betrayal from its allies. Christopher Nolan, whose every other movie was either adapted screenplays or original ones, Dunkirk marks the first biopic and thanks to him, the vital stand of Dunkirk will be remembered by the modern generation once again.

One should not buy his/her tickets in the hopes of enjoying yet another Hacksaw Ridge or Fury. Dunkirk is about survival with fewer bullets and blood and it is made by one of the greatest living movie makers of our generation. Prepare to be immersed into the crucial hours of the soldiers on the beaches, the pilots of the Spitfires on the sky and the civilians on their rescue yachts.

On the downside, if you are so much into that, Dunkirk has no memorable characters on its fold, except for Mark Rylance and Fionn Whitehead. Strong character developments were always been Nolan's signature and one might miss such a quality in Dunkirk. Still, it is passable since what he has prepared is beyond words...

The best of the year, so far...
19 November 2016
Wow, how do I describe this film? Miyazaki meets Disney? One of the most beautifully animated movie? I wholeheartedly praise the creators for crafting such a wonderful piece of art. This fresh take on Samurai legend is strong in narration and emotions, and entertainingly funny at the same time. Travis Knight weaves this one in such a fashion that one can only complete the movie with tears trailing down their cheeks. Kubo and the Two Strings is a stroke of genius that hides under a simple story line.

It's a whole new quest in a whole new world with a whole new, soulful characters. I strongly believe characterization is an important aspect of movie making. Even with a weak script, you can create an engaging film, if your characters are interesting with traits that goes beyond spectrum. I've also seen movies with strong content fails due to the lack of strong characters. Kubo and the Two Strings had a predictable story, yet a strong screenplay and it is rich with well-structured characters. Beatle and Monkey are the best side-kicks, until they turned out to be more than side-kicks, since R2-D2 and C3PO. Theron and McConaughey really help to solidify their existence with their voices. And, boy-o-boy the pieces of dialogues that are in this one! Simply brilliant.

Last but not least, the end credit song "while my guitar gently weeps" beautifully performed by Regina Spektor, is a fitting sent off to a heart-touching emotional trip. Kubo and the Two Strings is so far the best movie I've seen this year because it's rich in so many aspects. One must even can argue about the psychological aspects that the movie deals with and how it can touch our hearts and feelings...

Spotlight (I) (2015)
8/10
Shocking revelations can bring accolades indeed...
22 April 2016
The story, or incident to be precise, of Spotlight was an ideal material for a documentary. It follows through the news team and their work which eventually cracked open a behemoth of conspiracy under the Christian monarchy. With a formidable cast and an eventful script, Spotlight became an instant cinematic classic, bagging the best picture Oscar this year. It also shows how strong Micheal Keaton's comeback is, as he is now part of two consecutive best picture winners.

There was a time when there were no supreme force in the western world other that Christianity. They took the holy book as the eternal truth and crushed everyone who opposed the idea. They burned Bruno alive for suggesting a vast, infinite universe. They almost killed Galileo for his scientific curiosity. Now, they protected pedophile priests from law, fearing that it will affect their reputation, and god, it happened worldwide, including Ollur!!! Now that was a shocker.

Spotlight gained its place under spotlight due to this shock value, other than anything else it forwards. When one scrutinize it, it is evident that Spotlight is a procedural story happening inside a newspaper. Much like All the Presidents Man, that matter it holds makes it noteworthy. The courage it shown to put it in film shows the dedication of the whole cast and crew and the accolades were in fact for that courage...

The Big Short (2015)
8/10
When the bubble bursts...
8 March 2016
"When the bubble bursts..."

What just happened to Hollywood? They finally got their strength to shout out the bitter truth about our society. Stories that were condemned as anti-capitalistic are now the new hot stuff. I was disappointed with last year's output of Hollywood. After Fury Road and Star Wars, there wasn't much for cheer, until the Oscar season came. Trumbo, Bridge of Spies and The Big Short are three movies that ventured to explore the ideas beyond blind loyalty to conventional political scenario. While Trumbo and Bridge of spies dealt with the past, The Big Short was a depressing analysis of 2008's financial meltdown of the united states construction industry. The funny part is, even with a steaming subject and a detailed, disturbing analysis, this movie is credited as a comedy! Ah, the way world works...

While most of the terms discussed in this movie are strictly technical, like CDO, sub-prime, etc., I succeeded to grasp what was going on and it was a head-twister. Basically, it was the shortcut plan of the wall- street money makers to keep the capitalistic wheel running. When there wasn't enough oil to turn the wheel, it crashed. That is, people failed to pay their mortgages back and as they accumulated beyond the limit, the stocks got low and the wall-street crashed. Four individuals came to know about this years before it happened and The Big Short follows through their and their attempts to capitalize the fall. There are no good guys in this stories. Likewise, we can't blame them for doing so, because the fall was inevitable. This haplessness makes this movie quite realistic and relatable. It's a big surprise that Adam Macky directed this film. It was quite a translation from Anchormen to The Big Short.

The cast was so alive. Christian Bale, Steve Carrel, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and many other relatively unknown yet brilliant actors make this movie a delightful yet insightful watch. After all said and done, The Big Short brings out many questions that will elude sleep for many. Still, I have no idea how could they label this movie as a comedy. Seriously...

Wild Tales (2014)
8/10
What goes around, comes around...
27 December 2015
There is no better phrase to describe Damián Szifrón's disturbingly brilliant anthology. Six stories, each with the weight of rage and regret, each one is equally brilliant as the rest, makes Wild Tales one of the best movies ever made on the genre. The psychopathic cabin crew chief, the unintentional payback, the crime of passion, the commoner redemption, the unfortunate convict and the wedding of the equal minds. Stories that are so wild that will leave the viewers numb.

Normally, anthology films tend to feature a wide spectrum of emotions, joining a common element. Some of them will be remarkable, while some won't be up to the standard. Wild Tales brings out six different lives interwoven with a common emotion - rage. It deals with how they handles with it, how it brings them down and how it provides them redemption. Written by the director himself, Wild Tales is rich with brilliant performances and beautiful visuals.

Wild Tales leaves a scar burning with anxiety and sorrow, with a pinch of comic relief. Surpassing the limits of dark humor with it's story lines, this movie is a treat for the fans of Pulp Fiction and it's like. A well-deserved Academy award nomination, even though it didn't capitalize from it, Wild Tales has the potential to become a classic in the genre...

Goosebumps... Lots of, Lots of Goosebumps...
27 December 2015
Remember the old days when people compare Star Wars original trilogy and prequels and lament on the fact that they cannot make a decent modern day adaptation for the franchise? Well, we cannot say that anymore. The Force Awakens is the ultimate fanboy dream and it fulfills their needs in every possible way. It has it's old, well-adored characters, plus a bunch of new cool ones. The Villainous Kylo Ren is a suitable successor for Darth Vader, considering he will remain behind his iron mask, and lots of action sequences with a brilliantly choreographed lightsaber dual. Daisy Ridley and John Bogoya proved their worth with an enjoyable show, while the veterans graced the screens with their iconic characters.

Still, it was too fulfilling and was biased for that matter. JJ knew how to sell it, much like he did with the first Star Trek movie and he gambled on the fan base too heavily. His gamble paid off, which is good for his paycheck, but worrying for the director he is. The Force Awakens, for the major parts, was in fact episode 1. A confidential message, a droid, Millennium Falcon, a new death star and a lot of laser blasters. There you have it. It was so close to become the new Star Trek Into the Wrath of Khan, and it was rescued by the devoted fans. It's quite fortunate that episode 8 will be directed by Looper director Rian Johnson and I'm dying to see his view on the material. JJ sure needs to work on original stories.

I've seen some comparisons over the new Star Trek and this one and it is quite debatable. It should've easily been this one, if the rest of the movie was as brilliant as the last 30 minutes. Sadly, it's not and I have to give my vote to Star Trek, for it's Sci-Fi roots and a brilliant combo of Chris Pine and Zachery Quinto. No offense Star Wars, I still love. Still, no amount of light sabers can kill the Trekkie in me. Well, at least not for now...

Jurassic Park: A Fan-Fiction
1 July 2015
People are criticizing this movie for not being a contender for the Spielberg classic. How can it be, when even Spielberg himself couldn't make a worthwhile sequel? Colin Trevorrow, the director of 'Safety Not Guaranteed' had a Herculean task on his hand when he was slated to direct this sequel-reboot. Setting the criticizing aside, I think the guy had made some admirable effort. Jurassic World is a fairly-entertaining movie that passes as a watchable one.

Sure, in no way this film could catch up with the original. The animatronics was replaced with some sloppy CGI, it lacked interesting characters, and the whole script was flawed with bad writing. But, Trevorrow treated it as a disaster movie rather than an innovation, and when we see it that way, the end product is satisfactory. Besides, he tried to bring out the nostalgia we all wanted with occasional nods to the original. From the evergreen soundtrack to the T-Rex, most of this movie proves the directors dedication to the subject. The sequences with the raptors were thrilling in the beginning. It's a shame he couldn't develop it more interestingly.

As Jurassic World established itself as a box-office success, there is a certain possibility of having a string of sequels in the future. Whether Trevorrow's dedication can hold up the franchise is a question for the future….

What a lovely day.......
22 May 2015
Finally, here's a sequel for Hollywood to be proud of. George miller, returning with his mind child, promised us an action packed movie, and god, what he delivered was the apex of action. About two hours of mindless ass kicking with eye-watering visuals. The only problem I had with this movie was that it never gave me a second to catch my breath!!! Once again, we are invited to the post-apocalyptic Australia, where there is no Cricket or kangaroo. We are introduced to a long haired Max besides his beast of a car that was destroyed in the second part. He gives us a monologue so that any new viewers won't get confused. From there on, it's hard to explain what was happening. Probably, the best action movie ever produced in Hollywood in the past decade, Fury Road actually showed it's middle finger to all those comic-book movies that we thought were delivering action. We got ourselves a new metric to scale them with.

On the acting department, quite frankly, I miss Gibson as Max. Hardy may be a badass, but Gibson was cool as well as badass, like a whole package. If anyone I'm so impressed with, that will be Theron as Furiosa. Ms. Theron proved herself to be more than a pretty face with movies like Monster. Theron's portrayal of Furiosa was strong and subtle. After Ripley and Sarah Conner, we might have found our new kick-ass female protagonist through Furiosa.

Max is a character that needs to be in a complex situation. Miller knows this fact more than anyone, so he structured this movie in the same way he did with the 'Road Warrior'. He gave him conflicts, and let him to solve them his usual way: explosively. Sure, this movie may not be a masterpiece, but it's sure is entertaining, and it is loyal to it's characters.....

...Assemble!!!!
6 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Just completing Cap's words, 'cause you know, he didn't got the chance to... Never mind, moving on...

Avengers: Age of Ultron is yet another Marvel movie that has everything for fans and casual viewers to cheer about, and has nothing for serious viewers. It has vibrant visuals, superheroes smashing each other like punch bags, crazy fan theories and a paper-thin plot that is, in fact a rehash of the previous movie.

There is a villain who has a morality issues, such that he thinks himself the Saviour, and when he fails in his mission, he tries for a treaty, just like Loki does in the first film. There is the imminent threat of Hulk turning uncontrollable, a fight to contain him, and even the sucker punch. Also, an explosive finale, in which god knows how many have died. In the end, Joss Whedon and Marvel scores yet another financial success, by recycling the script.

On the other hand, it's two and half hours of action and mayhem that worth your money, if not time. Mindless fun, with tacky one-liners and colorful cinematography, Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn't fails it's fans, but questions the validity of MCU's future.....

The Interview (II) (2014)

Neighbours< The Interview< This Is The End
28 December 2014
In simplest terms, this movie's validity can be explained from the above formula. Seth Rogen's formula of sexist jokes and eccentric plot lines fails to amuse me by each film. The earlier one, Neighbours, was so pathetic, that it even questioned his future products. Interview, though it is better than Neighbours, is not free from the clutches of this formula. In fact, he concentrated on penning racist jokes, along with his awkward numbers. Following the footsteps of 'The Great Dictator', one of the most brilliant political satire, this one questions the dictatorship in North Korea, without a single moment of brilliance to remember. Even though it is a below average effort from a comedic combo which made some good movies, it never dwell into the status of a unbearable one, and that's a relief....

The aftermath of The Hobbit....
16 December 2014
Last year, when I reviewed Desolation of Smaug, I pointed out the possibilities that they can include on the next one. Those were: "A dragon who wants to destroy the fisherman village, a man who waits for the dragon with a black arrow, an elf-dwarf love story, an elf who chases an orc who may be will find a pale one too, a forwarding army of orcs, and a wizard in cage."

Well, most of them was indeed in the movie, with some good and bad elements. First of all, Battle Of Five Armies is a shadow of Return of The King. There are precisely five armies, slicing and hammering each other. Had to say, the fight sequences were awesome. Before that, there was Thorin Okenshield playing Humphrey Bogart from Treasure Of Sierra Madre.

Overall, the Hobbit series was a leftover of the Lord Of The Ring series, and as per the previous ones' standard, this one is a fitting conclusion. Still, it gave us the best hobbit ever put on screen, gave us some ravishing visuals. So don't be so hard on it....

Interstellar (2014)

INTERSTELLAR: Different Perspectives...
10 November 2014
Scenario 1: As a serious movie buff:- Someone who scrutinizes a movie with keen observation might found Nolan's new epic space drama lacks a few things. Like,

1)A strong script: Interstellar, apart from it's stellar visuals is a hollow one. There isn't anything new that we would expect from the director.

2)Simply isn't Nolan's best work: Nolan had done a lot of home work for this one, which is evident in the production. But, what makes Nolan movies perfect is the twisting, unpredictable storyline. Interstellar is a predictable plot for someone who has common sense

3)Camera works and lighting are not that brilliant: Interstellar, which doesn't have the technical brilliance of last year's Gravity, is not that innovative in the camera department. We were expecting more from a director who made Memento.

With all that one may find Interstellar an average flick, if he dared to go deep into the details.

Scenario 2:As a science buff:- For someone, who read about black holes and imagined what will it be to travel through one, this movie is priceless. As Nolan's most ambitious work, he spent a lot of time time to make the science right, which made him sacrifice a lot of other elements. Making a movie out of a science book was a great leap in terms of Sci-Fi movies and even though it may not surpass Space Odyssey, it can rest on it's side.

Scenario 3: A regular movie goer:- For regular audience, who may look for some eye candy, some good acting and some sentiments, Interstellar is a perfect choice for the weekend. It's brilliant visualization of the unknown, brilliant performances from McConaughey, Chastain, Hathaway and probably everyone on board, marks Interstellar a stellar one. Matt Damon's surprising turn as Mann was also brilliant.

As per the scenarios, Interstellar can be labelled as a wonderful cinematic experience other than a brilliant use of arts and artists.....

Lucy (I) (2014)

'Lucy' is a visually stunning, illogical mess
23 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
A synthesized chemical gives our protagonist a way to use his brain beyond his normal share. With that, he becomes popular and rich. Wait, that's the plot of Bradley Cooper movie 'Limitless'. Well, in Lucy, synthesized CPH4 makes our beautiful Protagonist practically "GOD". It means, she is like Neo without sentinels or Superman without Kryptonite. Yet, her decisions takes this movie from a mere 30-minute story to 90 minutes movie. Lucy is an action,Sci-Fi flick directed by Luc Besson, whom once I admired because of the movies like Leon and Nikitha. Fair enough, he made an entertaining flick, still a head-scratching, exhausting one.

Even before I decided to watch this movie, I read about the criticisms it was having due to some inaccuracies about some scientific facts. So, I left my scientific curiosity out of the hall. Still, I couldn't betray my logic when I was going through the movie. Take it, CPH4 makes a person invincible. It gives her x-ray vision, agility, even ability to time travel.Hell, I even adjusted to the idea that Lucy is the mother of us all, and she is everywhere. But, why would someone, who is willing to kill a number of henchmen in split seconds, left the only person who will give her a threat alive at the first place. Then there is the instant Chinese translation. At one point she shoots a guy in the legs because he didn't speak English. In the next moment she can actually read Mandarin from nowhere.

Granted, visually Lucy is a promising watch, and have some appreciable philosophical undercurrents. But, when a movie tries to play with a lot of cards inside a specific circle, the results will be more misses than hits. For Lucy, it was really a miss, which could've been better. As a final word, Limitless, even though shares a similar environment, was a decent watch. But Lucy here, makes Limitless an instant classic.

So far, the best entertainer of 2014....
17 June 2014
It's always a hard job to make a sequel for a successful movie. It becomes harder when the first one is an epic. How to Train Your Dragon is one of the best animation movie ever made and it's one of my all-time favorites. So, when I heard about a sequel, I was more cautious than exited. First of all, How to Train Your Dragon was a perfect piece of cinema. It had everything that a moviegoer could ask, with which are perfectly blended together. It was also a bit conclusive. They had a problem and they found a solution, it was as simple as that. So, what was there to bring a follow-up was actually a few. With all these in my mind, I visited the movie house, and it's safe to say that the experience wasn't a disappointment.

Just like it's predecessor, How to Train Your Dragon is a fun movie with ravishing visuals- a must-watch on 3-D, awesome action sequences, adequate drama and sentiments. Though the movie derails a bit in the middle parts, the following action and visuals takes the wagon to the finish line in fashion. The plot goes as follow- Hiccup and his buddy Night Fury embarks on a voyage to find new lands, and they finds themselves in the hands of a group of dragon thieves. They are trying to capture and forward dragons to a man named Drago, so that he can build a dragon army. To persuade Drago to relieve from his evil task, Hiccup travels to find Drago by neglecting the warnings of his father. The story moves with Hiccup's findings through this trip.

Apart from everything technical, which are as good as the predecessor, what the sequel lacks is a strong plot. Well, it's a fact that it can't be matched with the original since it was entertaining and touching at the same time. It had to be concluded that plot-wise, the original can not be competed. But on every other aspects, the sequel managed to catch up with it's predecessor.

As a final word, How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a worthy addition to the series, but it's no match for the original. Still, it manages to entertain us. Aside from a bit dark plot lines and some ambiguous back stories, this movie is a perfect entertainer for the weekend, and so far the best one of this year.....

Queen (2013)
8/10
Beautiful in every aspect.....
9 June 2014
It's been a while since I watched a movie which is bound to be a feel-good one, and this one is amazing on it's merits. You can add this gem to the category of movies like Untouchable, Life is beautiful and Forrest Gump. Every one of these movies deals with tragic issues, and most of them are tear-jerker, but with happiness. While Untouchable deals with the relationship of a wheel-chaired noble man and his black assistant, Life is beautiful tells the story of a son and father amidst of holocaust and Forrest Gump is the story of an individual who is incompetent in the usual merits. But all these movies are presented in such a fashion like there is a world beyond their sorrow. it makes as happy and wonder at its sheer brilliance.

Queen is such a movie where you see an individual who tries to overcome her inner turmoils. Rani, beautifully portrayed by Kangana Ranaut, is an ordinary Delhi girl who is expected to marry her lover in a matter of days. Due to some ambiguity, the groom decides to cancel the marriage. To set her mind Rani embarks on a journey, her honeymoon, alone. The plot deals with the issues of woman empowerment, cultural dissimilarities and existence of love affairs in a much more comic manner so that we won't be exhausted with it.

Much like Forrest Gump, it's a one wo/man show. Queen can be considered as the most iconic role of Kangana till date, and I'm pretty sure if it was released in Hollywood, she would've bagged the best actress Oscar. Supporting actors like Rajkumar Rao, Lisa Haydon and Mish Boyko were also brilliant, so that it became an assemble of talented actors. The soundtracks were also beautiful that it made the movie so much moving.

As a last tip, Queen is one of a kind movie which is made in Indian Cinema rarely. There are other movies like English Vinglish and Jab We Met that are similar to it in nature. If you are satisfied with queen, you should try them too....

The return of the prodigal son....
31 May 2014
X-Men is considered as one of the very first superhero-movie franchise that proved superhero movies have it's market. It also was a franchise that chopped away from it's roots right when it was flourishing at it's peak. Then came a lot of spin-offs. In the beginning, there was the visionary Bryan Singer. Then came Brett Ratner, who somewhat broken the hearts of fans worldwide. The spin-offs and directors extended into a long list including Mathew Vaughn and James Mangold. There were movies that we love, movies that we hate and movies that we tries to forget. it was inevitable that the circle should be closed so that the franchise could survive, and who might be the better person to do that other than Singer???

X-Men:Days Of Future Past is a movie which is prepared with so much grace and soul, so that every bit of it feels enjoyable. Not only it gives a clean chit for the franchise, it also saves the movies from being rebooted. Much of the courtesy goes for the directors Bryan Singer and Mathew Vaughn. X-Men:First Class was a unique movie that presented a strong ensemble cast and a much deviated yet successful story-telling. It was that cast and storyline helped singer to rebuild his once adorable franchise.

The word is at a verge of extinction, for both humans and mutants. There is only one way to stop these from happening, and is by rewriting the past. so, the X-Men sends Wolverine in to the past to fix it. The plot goes like that. It is kind of familiar since most of us are repeated viewers of Back To The Future movies. Just like Biff gets the sports almanac, something undesired happens on the past and certain measures should be taken to prevent it from happening. What moves the plot forwards is the path that Logan chooses.

As mentioned earlier, the greatest asset Singer had was the cast of First Class including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. This trio shared the major amount of screen time and they utilized it with electrifying performances. Others including Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellen have also done their part impressively. Evans Peters as Quicksilver was a treat to watch and Peter Dinklage has done another important part. The visual effects and background scores were so much in tune with the visuals that it all came in as a single block of visual treat.

There isn't much of a negative side for the movie aside from a few facts that were left unanswered such as old Logan's metal claw and Kity's time-phasing power. Even though the movie is brilliant in its own marks, I won't deem it as the best of X-men since I still love X2 and First class the most. Still, the importance of this movie over the whole franchise is immense since it gave a new platform that can be used for a lot more movies, and lets hope 2016's Apocalypse going to utilize it to it's maximum.....

Godzilla (2014)

The Alpha Primate Ultimatum...
17 May 2014
I had been a fan of Godzilla ever since I watched the 1998 movie. Don't get me wrong, I was then 6 years old and it was one of the very few Hollywood movies that released at my place. After 10 years, when I had a second watch of 1998 Godzilla, I understood why it was panned so deeply. Still, that movie made me research through the Godzilla mythology and I was pretty much impressed. That's why I visited the movies for this 2014 take on the Alpha Primate. I must say, as a movie fan I'm not quite satisfied with it, but as a classic Godzilla fan, it was more than merry.

The technical side is the most note-worthy on this take, since the creature design was so much rooted with the 1950 classic. The scenes which depicts the menace of Godzilla was nearly breath-taking, and the roar was something special. The design of MUTOs were also appreciable, and the CGI works and 3-D effects are also passable. At least, the 3-D didn't made me scratch my head.

Considering the story side, it was a weak script, though pretty strong for a disaster movie. It wasn't a throughout smack-smash, or a 2-hour collision of the giants, but had a good human point-of-view over the subject, which takes me to the weak point of the movie.

The acting section wasn't that bright. It had a good platform for the actors even though the concentration was on the monster. Bryan Cranston proved it with his charismatic performance. He didn't had a major part on the screen, but was a core element on the script and with the high-voltage sentiments and rage he portrayed the lone crusader for truth brilliantly. Sad thing was, nobody, including Aron-Taylor Johnson and Ken Watanabe, was that much competing. It made me to long for the creature sequences more. But considering the script and the director's intentions, the final product is an adequate one to pass both fans and casual users.

As a final note, Godzilla is a classic incarnation of Gojira movies with appropriate human emotions. If you are a classic Gojira fan, never miss it. If you are a movie-goer who likes movies with a strong mythology, go give it a try.........

A jumble of clichéd sequences and EFX.....
12 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Marc Webb's attempt to reboot Spidey from the successful Raimi franchise wasn't a bad one as everyone considers. Apart from the familiar origin story the reboot was much more rooted to the source material and much more stylish. The first-person sequences, web slinging machine, and a much more cocky Spidey was a remarkable improvement over Raimi's Spidey. But, watching the sequel, I am having a feeling that Webb could've done better.

First of all, the movie was a mix of all sort of things and not even a single element convinces the audience. There is romance, which is ridden with clichés. Stone and Garfield wasn't enough convincing as they were in the previous one. The opening shot which was pretty good, but doesn't gave any serious contribution to the plot. The script was so weak that it had to compensate with action. With more than enough slo-mos and destruction, the action sequences became a bi-product of 3-D effects. As a result, we got a partially structured story and characters with lots of visual effects. No wonder Chris Nolan despises 3-D.

Granted, there are some good moments and performances in the movie. The hint of Sinister Six and eventual death of Gwen are brave decisions from the director so that he could follow the comic's root. It could've been turned in to a better, engaging script. But instead, we have to be satisfied with this one. It could've been better than this. Way better.........

'Marvel'lous fanboy dreams....

A superhero movie with it's usual pack filled with action and mayhem. Along with the lines of political thriller and roots from the comic book storyline. Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier has everything that a fanboy can cheer for.

Compared to it's weak prequel, The Winter Soldier Excels in every aspect. Whether it is story or action. Aside from the movie milestone Avengers, this might be the best movie in the MCU. Chris Evans, now in his signature role shine as ever. Samuel.L.Jackson, Scarlet Johanson and Anthony Macke are also joyful to watch. But it was Sebastian Stan's winter soldier was the treat for eyes. With cool movements and skills he steals the show.

As for the downside, the plot was a predictable one, and the whole Hydra business was a bit overlooked. Aside from that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a perfect blockbuster for every age.

Noah (2014)
9/10
Fountain all over again......
28 March 2014
Darren Aronofsky built a reputation in world cinema with his brave ventures like Requiem for a dream, Black swan and Wrestler. Among these, there was a movie named Fountain, which dealt with the concepts of life and death. The movie was a box-office failure but nowadays considered as an underrated classic. When I watched Noah, it reminded me the fate of Fountain.

Similar to Fountain, Noah also deals with the issue of our existence in this world. Aronofsky chose a popular biblical relic for the purpose. The director's intention was so much innovative that it deserved a much more focused approach. Noah is flawed, no doubt about it, but it would've been a better movie. It deserves multiple watches for grasping the whole idea that Aronofsky forwards. As a director, Aronofsky excels like his any other movie. With cool visuals, striking montages and a mind bending plot, Aronofsky gives everything he got.

The problem that haunts with Noah is the presentation. Paramount swears that they have given the complete creative control to the director, but it's bit hard to believe. If it was meant to deal with the inner struggles of Noah, they should have portrayed that instead of flying doves. Seriously, I'm fed up with those goggles. You have to wait for an hour to the real movie to begin, while you are dealing with the 3D gimmicks. When the movie actually started to deal with the real script, when it started to became serious, it ended so soon that you will feel like 'what???'.

Noah is a movie with a strong philosophical platform. The Eden sin and the story of Cain and Abel are not just myths, but are the very lives of human race. The forbidden fruit represents the violence and greed which lurks in every human being. Tubal-Caine becomes the snake to Ham, when he offers the flesh of beast to him(Spoiler, whatever). This movie is food for thoughts. Go watch it by yourselves and if you feel the same way, let's call it deja vu.

As a final note, if you are going to movies to see some action and to crack some popcorn, wait for next week's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But if you are a serious moviegoer, you should watch this one.......

Hotel Rwanda (2004)
8/10
The Rwandan Schindler...
5 January 2014
The world is a hell. People derives the humanity according to color and race, and conflicts results in blood-shedding riots. There were a lot of incidents, which will will make the modern men to lower his head in shame. Still, there will be a few men, who amidst these crises works for the greater good. Those people are the real heroes who gives us a ray of hope to carry on with our lives. Hotel Rwanda is one of those movies, which shows us the painful realities around our world, and those people who risked their lives to save others on those occasions.

Among many movies, I gives Spielberg's Shcindler's List a special place due to it's artistic production and truthful portrayal of one of the most darkest time of our history. Hotel Rwanda is basically a similar portrayal of how a single man saved a lot of lives by risking his own lives. The movie doesn't compete with Schindler by any of the artistic characteristics, but it deserves praise on it's own merit. Don Cheadle done an excellent job with his portrayal of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed thousands of Rwandan refugees. The supporting cast including Sophie Okonedo and Nick Nolte also done an impressive job, and soundtracks are daring and charming.

Hotel Rwanda finishes with a note of hope, and it is mostly appreciated. Still, the conflicts between people around the world are going on with due to several reasons, without the understanding of the rules of humanity. Let's hope people like Paul will remain in the coming days to help them....

Drishyam (2013)
10/10
Outstanding effort by every single artist on board....
29 December 2013
Indian Cinema is not just Bollywood. It has a number of regional languages to deal with, and each region contributes it's share. As for Mollywood(Malayalam movie industry), it was one of the most prominent contributers for Indian Cinema. Big names like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shaji.N.Karun are internationally acclaimed directors and actors like Mohanlal and Mammootty are the gems of Indian movies. Recently, Mollywood produces movies which are intolerable in quality, but still there are movies like Dhrishyam which will provide us sheer joy about our movies.

We grew up by watching movies of the big M's and we are proud of their potentials. We were also disappointed with their recent products which were dull and boring. Some say these actors were not meant to be working on Malayalam, instead they should work on some high-level industry. They also complains that here, we don't have much opportunities too. But we do make our merry with what we got, and Dhrishyam is one of those movies which utilized every bit of resource that provided by our industry.

The story is about a common man who tries to protect his family from a mishap, which took a young man's life. The script is good , and direction is also impressive. What makes Dhrishyam brilliant is that the unique performance of the lead actors. Mohanlal, famous for his flexible acting skills, dazzles as Georgekutty, a farmer-businessman who cares about his family through every event of the movie. Meena, Asha sarath were also good to watch. Shajon, normally type-casted as a comedian, Makes a brilliant turn-over to a character role.

As a final word, Dhrishyam is becoming a cult classic in Indian Cinema, and it spawns a new genre family crime thriller. Watch it. You'll never get disappointed...

Elysium (I) (2013)
6/10
High expectation gone in vain...
23 December 2013
A sci-fi movie from the well-acclaimed director of District 9, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Surely, the scale of expectation was high above, and I myself counted Elysium as a strong contender this year. But, when it finally hit the theaters, sadly, everything gone in vain. Neill Blomkamp handled a subject that was repeated a lot of times before, but with a fresh environment, that is , in a distant future. What he planned to convey that whether we live in stone age, or a civilized one , the difference between rich and poor will remain till the end, and there will be some people who will risk their lives to overcome that difference.

Blomkamp presented Max De Costa as a common man, not as a freedom fighter. That was a good move, since Max doesn't had much obligations to follow. He fought for his survival, his own life, and we can accept that there are no super heroes in Elysium. Supporting casts like Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley are also presented as people who lives for their own cause. It shows how aloof will be the society in a crisis. Technically, Elysium has it's own standards, and by no means it is comparable to D9. Lots of us considered D9 as a benchmark, and unfortunately, they couldn't value the existence of Elysium because of that.

What went wrong with Elysium was that it never dealt with the actual problems of people which lives in a chaotic society. I mean, was they only needed medical assistance? The whole world is polluted, and why don't they demand any technology that will reduced the pollution, instead of the ticket to Elysium. Science is much advanced to filter out dead cells and recreate new ones, right. What about their food source, and many important stuffs like that. Elysium forgot to maintain a strong plot over the platform which was provided by the story. The rest was a consequence of that fault.

On the acting department, Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley done a convincing part as Max and Kruger. Alice Braga didn't had much to do, and Jodie Foster was an unnecessary addition to the cast. The action sequences and special effects are plausible.

As a final word, watch it without any hope of magic that we had in D9, and You may enjoy Elysium......

I'm so glad it is over...
23 December 2013
The first part of The Hangover will always remain as a surprise hit, and one of the favorites. Thats that. After that it was total downhill. The second part was pretty much similar to the first part, except that it contained less humor and more violence. We eventually forgot it,since we were still hungover with the first part. Then came the third part. No one asked for trilogy on the saga of wolf pack, still it can as an asteroid above our head, and by mistake I happened to see it.

Initially I thought they had studied their lesson and they are changing their tracks. This time they hadn't any bachelor party and no more roophies to get hungover. Still, one of them had to be vanished. This time it was a hostage situation, and this time too, it was Doug. I must say that I had a few laughs because they reminded me about the first part here and there, with the visit to Jade and Carlos, but soon, it became intolerable. A useless heist plot and Chow as a villain, and above all, a climax which made no sense at all.

Briefly, if you haven't seen the second part but the first part, be happy with it. You are on a safe zone and further journey will be really bumpy. If you have seen the second part, just give it a try, because it is as bad as it's predecessor. Nothing more to say....

Splice (2009)
3/10
A horror movie without much horror
22 December 2013
Dark castle entertainment had given us interesting piece of movies like Orphan and House of Wax. So, I expected a little much from Splice, and I am truly disappointed with it. Splice is a movie labeled as a horror movie without much on its stock to scare us. In fact, it is more of a biological thriller, much like Outbreak, or Cabin Fever. It showcases a wrongly went experiment and it's consequences, in a not so interesting manner. The movie forwards some questions about todays scientific approaches on genetics. Designer babies and artificial lives are hot topics in todays medical researches, and the future of these experiments are in fact ambiguous. May be thats what Vincenzo Natali actually wanted to give through the movie, but the premises and presentation somewhat made the movie's attention to deviate from it.

Speaking about acting department, Adrian Brody still suffers from the post-pianist chaos. That guy is struggling to find a breakthrough and Splice wasn't a safe choice. With as much dry as it was, Brody doesn't even had any presence on the subject. Sarah Polly managed to give a reasonable performance, and Delphine Chanéac and Dren wasn't a bad one either. The supporting cast is as good as mannequins.

Technical aspects are also passable, and the design of the creature deserves appreciation. Apart from that Splice was a mess which ridden with horror clichés and loose characters. Watch it, if you have nothing else to do......
