ONCE A CROOK, ALWAYS A CROOK.
20 May 2024
Stu's case 100 percent, and very atmospheric, all about a mysterious, beautiful blonde called Kristie (well played by young Susan Oliver) who has an equally mysterious and unpredictable boy friend (Robert Vaughn). Both Oliver and Vaughn appear in early roles here, and are exceptional.

Stu is hired by wealthy businessman Eugene Seaver (Bill Quinn), Kristie's father, who is certain she's going to help Vaughn make a getaway, who is on his way to prison for stealing from his company. Stu has his hands full because Kristie is about as slippery as her boyfriend. Beware!

Vaughn has some very good scenes, looking like he's about to pull something. There's an interesting scene with him being escorted onto a train, which has a kind of noirish feel to it. It's well directed.

Robert C. Dennis wrote the story, and 13 others for the series, noted for writing many classic episodes for Alfred Hitchcock's tv show. There's definitely a bit of a cross-over here.

In fact, in what appears to be a gag scene, the Norman Bates house from PSYCHO is re-done, now doubling as a train station? What was up with that?

Solid support from veteran co-star Bill Quinn, who in his long career, appeared in tons of tv dramas and sitcoms, generally as doctors or cops. George Murdock also appears as Frank, known later for his cop role on BARNEY MILLER.

The shootout ending is Classic 77 Sunset Strip, but totally unexpected, and Vaughn is memorable. The shootout scene is on one of the most frequently used backlot streets at Warner Brothers, the buildings look very familiar. As always, top direction from series director Robert Sparr.

SEASON 5 EPISODE 34 remastered. Thanks so much to METV for running this outstanding series on Sunday nights along with HAWAIIN EYE.

STU HAS WORK TO DO.
20 May 2024
Yes, it's rare, but a very interesting story how Stu Bailey gets scammed by some international crooks, who stole a million dollars in securities right under his watchful eye.

I agree with the last reviewer, Stu heads to Switzerland -- but obviously it's a snowy set at Warner Brothers in Burbank! Actually, the snow draped scenes are well done, and with some very good acting thanks to director Richard Sarafian, who in the early 70s would direct the cult film, VANISHING POINT.

You have to love this cast, lead by trigger happy Interpol agent Kurt Kreuger, famous for playing Nazis in classic war films of the 40s. He appeared in five series episodes, and for good reason. He is a class act. Also a treat to see Albert Paulsen as villain Rudolph, best known for memorable performances in such shows as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and HAWAII FIVE O.

Yes, Stu gets in some romance time with beautiful hotel desk clerk Adrianne, played by Maria Machado.

But, as always, don't underestimate our cool hero.

Again, as I had written earlier, these final episodes of the season may have been a lead-in to the next season where Stu went it alone, and with some equally dangerous characters. Wait and see.

THE GLADIATOR AND HIS SON.
20 May 2024
Very true, this incredible film has touches of De Mille, however, produced by the team who amazingly brought KING KONG to life. The special effects, state of the art back in the day, remain unforgettable. Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack put as much energy and creativity into this 30s epic as they did in Kong.

Historically inaccurate, but an outstanding tale of good versus bad. Preston Foster turns in what should have been an Oscar winning performance as the struggling blacksmith Marcus, tragically losing his wife and son and his faith, becoming a corrupt gladiator and eventually the richest man in the doomed town of Pompeii. As the incredible tale unfolds, Marcus adopts Flavius, the young son (John Wood) of a man he killed. Flavius meets Jesus Christ in his adult years and comes the challenging relationship between the two.

Beautifully mounted sets, endless action and exceptional acting make this a winner. Australian actor Wood is quite good as Flavius, perhaps the best performance of his career. Wood served in WWII, captured and held by the Japanese for many years, a hero off screen to many as well.

Interesting casting of Basil Rathbone as none other than Pontius PIlate, Alan Hale as Burbix, Louis Calhern and beautiful Dorothy Wilson as Clodia. Ward Bond has an early role as Murmex. A roster of classic movie stars if there ever was.

Based on Lord Lytton's book, thoughtfully written by Ruth Rose, wife of Schoedsack, who also co-wrote KING KONG, and perhaps had the giant of giants in mind. The explosive climax is one you definitely will not forget, and for a film nearing the century mark. It's that brilliant. A work of art, a labor of love to be sure. Later re-released in color, which is an absolute treat to see in all its glory.

Remade in 1960, starring muscular Steve Reeves, which also has its moments, but alas, the original is always the best. As mentioned by other reviewers, this film does hold up to KING OF KINGS and THE GREATEST STORY EVERY TOLD, again with shades of Cecil B. DeMille. Running time at 96 minutes and worth every second.

Thank you to TCM for running this masterpiece through the years. Always on dvd and remastered blu ray for completists.

POLLY COOKIN' UP A STORM?
20 May 2024
This story is quite common among all sitcoms --the cooking! Polly is a good cook, BUT makes the mistake of adding some ingredients that cause Chip to have an allergic reaction. OMG.

Polly is beside herself, and you really feel sorry for her. It's just one of those things, and watching Chip sick as a dawg is a sight to see. You feel sorry for him too! What a calamity, an episode we all remember. Director Fred De Cordova did his job. By the way, a highlight to this story is the special appearance of Carleton Young, as the doctor, a long time western actor, later a favorite in John Ford westerns.

Great trivia note, Robbie and Katie's triplets are also credited, played by the Todd brothers, born in 1967, Michael, Daniel and Joseph. Michael became the most famous, later becoming a producer as an adult. In this episode they are now nearing 4 years old.

10 Stars for poor Polly, who learns a cooking lesson.

BARNEY ROLLS WITH THE PUNCHES.
19 May 2024
PART II The Conclusion.

I agree with the last reviewer, this is a fantastic two part episode, and perhaps the best in that category, largely because it takes on different material and rides with it. Who would ever thought Phelps and his crew would get into boxing? You have to admit, poetic license runs rampant here because Barney is supposedly a tech guru. What are the chances of a technical person suddenly becoming a boxer? But it's all in the game.

This second half finds Phelps almost exposed for manipulating the boxing match (you have to love these tense moments), and Barney really getting roughed up in the ring. This was Greg Morris' finest hour, able to show off his acting and physical skills. He's the one to watch, along with Rollin, pretending to be his manager among other undercover duties.

Popular Australian actor Ron Randall is spot on as the good for nothing boxing promoter, who you know is going to get his. Surprisingly, guest star boxer Sugar Ray Robinson plays a bad guy, and is a very good actor. Also look for Biff Elliot as Kid Wilson, top heavy in movies and tv.

Another well written gem by William Read Woodfield who could crank out an interesting story.

Greg Morris should have gotten an Emmy nod for his hard work, above and beyond the call of duty.

THE FAMOUS TURTLE RACE EPISODE.
19 May 2024
Originally filmed in black and white, the remastered color version (re-released for tv) only seems to add more to this episode, and its a classic.

Mr. Howell has an ongoing bet with the Skipper and his pet turtle. So far, the Skipper has lost 39 races, and with that terrible record, Howell proposes a sly idea. Should the Skipper lose again -- Gilligan becomes Mrs. Howell's personal houseboy. Guess what happens? This leaves the Skipper all alone, no one to bunk with and boss around, and Gilligan hanging with the Howells and doing all the housework with a featherduster!

Best part is another turtle race challenge and the old "switcharoo," which really gets messed up big time.

You have to admit, the race is fun to watch, bringing out the best and worst of Mr. Howell.

All this goofy stuff was written by Walter Black, famous for writing many episodes of SPACE GHOST and JOHNNY QUEST. Black later wrote cop shows, such as HAWAII FIVE O and MOD SQUAD.

Hooray for Rex, the Skipper's turtle, and catch Mr. Howell's burnt pants, thanks to butler Gilligan.

SEASON 1 EPISODE 28. Remastered dvd box set, two boxes, 6 dvd each. Released 2004 and 2012.

HERBIE BACK, BY POPULAR DEMAND.
19 May 2024
Series writer Buddy Atkinson had to continue the "Herbie" story, it was so insane. All us kids back in day loved this episode.

We also get to catch a glimpse of actor George Barrows, who played many gorillas in tv sitcoms.

George was a popular actor, but his talent for immitating gorillas, and especially Herbie, got him the most work.

The episode picks up from the last, Herbie leaving the Clampetts, though everybody wants him back.

Mr. Drysdale pulls another fast one and bribes the guy who plays Herbie (Barrows) to keep up the charade so Jed and everyone else will be happy. Classic scene -- Mr. Drysdale and Miss Jane driving Herbie back to the Clampetts mansion, the gorilla dressed in a suit and tie and smoking a cigar?

Definitely inspired by GILLIGANS ISLAND, with all the wild (fake) animals, and in a clever way, Atkinson also borrowed from the ADDAMS FAMILY because the situations were so bizarre. Ellie is even dancing by the pool with Herbie, who is now wearing a pink hat and shorts -- and has a rose in his mouth? The rose bit borrowed from Gomez Addams.

Great running gag with Granny's horrible stew. And Mr. Drysdale actually switching places with Burrows and now in the gorilla costume?

One of the best. SEASON 5 EPISODE 7 remastered color. The dvd box set has a classic color cover family picture, collectors edition.

LOVE, ITALIAN STYLE!
18 May 2024
It was this kind of sitcom material that inspired LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE in a few years. This was perfectly tailored for good guy Robbie, who always meant well, much like Steve, but a victim of circumstances.

Robbie is in the park one fine day and happens to meet pretty Italian girl Nina (played by Judy Cannon). They strike up a conversation, go for a little walk -- and all of a sudden Robbie is a possible husband to be? What?

It's all about old Italian traditions, at least according to Nina's wise dad, Vincenzo. The courting process has apparently begun, and all that's left is to get married? Jay Novello is a hoot in this role, who played many offbeat Italian parts in both films and tv. Also look for veteran actress Renata Vanni, as Vincenzo's wife, in many sitcoms herself, such as THAT GIRL.

It takes a father to father talk with Steve and Vincenzo to iron out this international incident.

A terrific episode with an excellent supporting cast.

Judy Cannon was actually born in Illinois, but does a good job with an accent. She was popular in both sitcoms and cop shows in the 60s.

SEASON 7 EPISODE 5 remastered color. Thanks so much to METV for these classic episodes.

DAISY THE SUPER STAR!
18 May 2024
Connie Lee, who either wrote or co-wrote the bulk of the series episodes, had to eventually put together a story about Daisy, the Bumstead's smart dog, who we all loved. The big secret about Daisy is she even "talked" or muttered at times, making her one special addition to the family, almost like a real person.

Daisy, who was about one year old when the series began, was all grown up now and it was high time to get her into an adventure of her own. Accordingly, Daisy becomes an overnight star, thanks to her picture on the cover of a magazine, the poster dog for Daisy Soap? That's great news, except when she's spotted by Hazel, the pretty gal friend of a gangster (well played by Veda Ann Borg), who wants Daisy all to herself.

Daisy is DOG napped! A real wacky story that also finds Dagwood in the limelight, landing the job of a model for bathing suits? Actually, he doesn't look too bad. Arthur Lake had a fairly good build to model swim trunks.

Watch for the wild scene with Dagwood, Mr. Dithers and Cookie (played by cute Marjorie Kent). As usual, Dithers goes nuts.

Aside from popular character actress Veda Ann Borg, look for veteran actor Ernest Treux as eccentric businessman Theodore Glassby and favorite movie bad guy Marc Lawrence. Any film with Lawrence in it is always a treat.

A nice salute to Daisy, whose real name was Spooks "Daisy" Renfro. Spooks was given the name because she was always afraid, or looked afraid. She was owned by Ronnie Renfro, famous dog trainer, who owned about 100 other dogs. Spooks was trained by the famous animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax and appeared in over 50 films, including such classics as NATIONAL VELVET. Spooks was born in 1937 and lived to the ripe age of 18, passing in 1955. She was cremated by Mr. Renfro, who probably kept her ashes.

A mini classic, one of the best episodes with a very good script. Thanks much to MOVIES Net for running this gem on Saturday mornings. Also sold separately on dvd.

THE PLANTATION MYSTERY.
18 May 2024
A staple in this super series is the investigation of southern plantations, especially around the time of the Civil War because there are lots of ghosts and ghost stories. This is one of them.

Steve and Amy turn up at a beautiful colonial house in a small town in Alabama, part of a sprawling southern plantation during the Civil War. The story starts out with a bang when Steve meets Robin, the owner of the house with her husband, who was literally pushed by a revengeful spirit from the ceiling to several floors below -- and miraculously survived! Of course, she believes the ghosts were trying to kill her, and may try again.

The story about the house, as can be expected, is as sad as it's frightening. Back during the Civil War, the home was owned by a large family, who were slowly killed off by yellow fever. The mother, now a widow, survived, but eventually lost the home according to Steve's research. What Amy discovers makes for one of the most bizarre revelations. She encounters a group of dead children, likely the children of the original plantation owner, who now resemble zombies and are slowly decaying, which is a horrific site. Amy connects them to all the strange and dangerous happenings at the house, particularly when Robin was nearly killed in the fall.

Amy has some serious suggestions for Robin and her husband. Will they take her advice?

10 Star episode that will keep you in suspense. Really creepy.

THE CASE OF THE HOMICIDAL DOCTOR.
18 May 2024
What I love about this uniqie series is it not only dealt with bizarre paranormal cases, it occasionally explored real-life homicide cases. This one is totally off the charts.

Steve and Amy head to a rural town in Washington state where a teen and his friends have been conducting seances and apparently contacting dead spirits. What they conjured up was the spirit of a homicidal maniac who was posing as a doctor on their property about 100 years ago.

The case centers around a family who moved into a new house, leaving their empty old house next door (for reconstruction) where there are lots of dead people. Doing her walk-through, Amy encounters a crazed dead woman whose focus is solely on killing living people, hence all the trouble this family is experiencing. The other spirits on the property, according to Amy, are this woman's poor victims who are still suffering the trauma they went through prior to their deaths.

Always the best part is Steve's in depth research which ties the case together. What he discovers is the woman who once owned the property set up a phony practice as a doctor or "healer" who would lure sick people to her, especially two British sisiters who had inherited a fortune. In order to "cure" her patients she would literally starve them to death, the plan being to starve various diseases out of their bodies! How it ended in most every case were her patients starving to death, and the phony doc writing up bogus death certificates to cover her crime. Additionally, there were some patients who were even encouraged to commit suicide. Amazing.

In a stunning reveal, Amy concludes this woman was a psycho serial killer in disguise, and even in death, is determined to kill more. The good news, if there is any, the woman eventually was exposed and stood trial for murder.

Amy concludes the family has no choice but to physically tear down and destroy their old house as there is no escape. Will they take her adivice?

A terrific early episode that's both interesting (from a criminal standpoint) and scary. Excellent job by Steve and Amy.

GABLE AND CRAWFORD'S LAST FILM, A WINNER.
17 May 2024
Perhaps an inspiration to PAPILLON, high adventure and camp extertainment to the max, some theaters at the time actually banning the film!

Clark Gable is two-fisted Verne, escaping Devil's Island with a bunch of little devils, among them Paul Lukas, Albert Dekker, Eduardo Ciannelli and J. Edward Bromberg. What a menacing horde, yet all desperate and vulnerable -- quite unexpectedly meeting Cambreau (exceptionally played by Ian Hunter), their guardian angel, who seems to know what's ahead in their treacherous trek to freedom.

Enter Joan Crawford at her sexy best (even at smoking cigarettes!) the biggest surprise of all, playing Julie, the young lady also with a past who has had her fill of men, except, perhaps Verne. In short, Gable and Crawford are dynamite, you can't get enough of these two together, their final film as a team and making it click as only MGM would have it.

Interesting casting of Peter Lorre, as Monsieur Pig, the bounty hunter, an about face for the actor who had just finished playing the gentlemanly sleuth, MR. MOTO for the last few years. Lorre is always mesmerizing, no matter what he does. Many other familiar faces here, including silent screen star Betty Compson in a small (unbilled) role as Suzanne.

Applause for co-star Ian Hunter as the genuine hero, perhaps his most memorable screen performance, and that's saying a lot with nearly 100 film credits, cast earlier in his career opposite Kay Francis. Outstanding writing on the part of Anita Loos, who began her career with D. W. Griffith, later known for GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. She adapted this for the screen from the book, "Not Too Narrow, Not Too Deep" by screenwriter and director Richard Sale.

Directed by one of Hollywood's master of love stories, Frank Borzage, who began his career in silent films. His next hit would be THE MORTAL STORM, starring Margaret Sullivan and James Stewart. Previously directed Crawford in MANNEQUIN (1937). She would next play the preacher in SUSAN AND GOD. Gable followed this with BOOM TOWN.

Thanks to TCM for running this film great. Always on dvd and remastered blu ray.

THE GREAT JEWEL ROBBERY EPISODE!
17 May 2024
Never forget this one as kids, well written by series regulars Jay Sommers and Dick Chevillat, who wrote for a lot of big name entertainers. It's also a very clever script as you watch the mechanics of it all.

Two not too bright bank robbers in Chicago steal a bunch of diamonds and have no choice but to dump them into a grain bin? What's next? Hilariously simple. The grains and diamonds are mixed into cereal boxes -- shipped off to Hooterville! You have to love this stuff. Of course, the cereal boxes (as was the custom back in the day) had prizes inside, and Oliver discovers diamonds in his cereal bowl the next morning!

Now the fun begins. Lisa insists they are the REAL DEAL, because after all, she knows diamonds... Oliver takes them over to a jeweler to get appraised and the guy believes he's one of the wanted thieves from Chicago. Best of all is a special appearance by noneother than Alan Hale, Jr., not playing the skipper, but rather a tough cop who puts the cuffs on Oliver.

You can tell everybody was having fun with this wacky episode, especially Alan Hale. There's also another running gag to mention, which was done quite a few times at the opening of each episode. Here, the robbers look at the names of the director and writers of the show, scribbled on a wall. That had to be a first for any sitcom.

Historically speaking, Richard L. Bare, who directed, held a record for directing the most episodes (166 in all) of any sitcom at the time. Bare lived to the ripe age of 101. Good trivia question.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 16 remastered color. 4 dvd set. Released 2017. Catch the classic color cover with Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor.

Season 8, Episode 11

BARNABY AND THE GANGSTA'S
17 May 2024
Two important things to note concerning this episode. It's a terrific change of pace, thanks to writer Robert I. Holt, finding Barnaby involved in the Latino community, which was long overdue. Also, the fact it was directed by Allen Baron, a rediscovered cult film director in recent years, for his work on a classic 1961 gangster movie that went viral.

In this case, an old cop friend of Barnaby's seeks revenge on a gang who killed his son, and the going gets rough because the guy has a very short fuse. Robert Holt took a hint from some MANNIX episodes, cleverly with a Latino slant, where the victim has an axe to grind and it's up to Barnaby to stop him and apprehend the real killer at the same time. The clock is ticking...

A superb cast of Latino actors, such as Carlos Rivas, who in real life was instrumental in getting better roles for Spanish actors in Hollywood. Popular actress Anna Navarro guest stars as does A. (Adolpho) Martinez, who is still working today. An enormously popular actor, also known for soap operas, such as SANTA BARBARA, ONE LIFE TO LIVE and DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Martinez recenty appeared in the tv series BLUE RIDGE. Skip Homeier is especially good as the local sheriff, a staple in westerns and probably the reason he was cast here.

Interestingly, Holt set this in the town of Santa Luisa, California (which does not exist), the same setting for DAN AUGUST, Burt Reynold's short lived but famous cop show. It could have been because the series was popular in reruns at the time. There is a Santa Lucia Range in central California, in Monterey County, which has a long history of lost gold and ghosts. That would have made another exciting story.

Great to Barnaby on the case. Recommended. SEASON 8 EPISODE 11 remastered color. Released 2018. Check out the classic Barnaby and Betty cover.

THE FAMOUS GLACIER EPISODE!
17 May 2024
Very difficult to forget this story, and with shades of Charles Dickens! The end of this strange tale is definitely what Hitch wanted you to remember.

Stirling Silliphant wrote this gem, along with nine others for the master of suspense.

Patricia Owens (best known for THE FLY), plays a young woman called Stella whose husband meets a tragic death mountain climbing, his body engulfed in a massive glacier. Two fascinating events to follow.

First, another gentleman, called Mark, enters her life soon after her husband dies, the one to break the news and who eventually falls in love with her.

Secondly, Stella refuses to do a thing, putting time on hold, awaiting the re-appearance of her husband's body once the glacier moves -- which according to scientific calculations will take about 40 years!

So she waits... and waits.

If this does not have "shades" of a real life Victorian story that inspired Charles Dickens. It was about a young woman whose husband also died suddenly. She would spend the rest of her life in mourning, and as if time stood still. Dickens it's believed based his tragic female character, Mrs. Havisham in GREAT EXPECTATIONS (who was instead left standing at the alter, wearing a rotting wedding gown for the rest of her life) on the event. Definitely a connection here, again thanks to Sterling Siliphant, who obviously did the research.

Two future tv stars add some spice to the story.

Warner Klemperer, with that distinctive personality, and Patrick Mcnee, playing the wise professor, a prelude to Steed on the AVENGERS.

Of course, Sterling Siliphant was a hero to all us kids, having created the greatest of tv road adventures, ROUTE 66, also the grandfather of cop shows, NAKED CITY. Siliphant was actually fired by Walt Disney and hired by Hitchcock, an interesting insider Hollywood story in itself. Sterling later wrote IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE ENFORCER, the list goes on... An imaginative writer, and with a real cool name we'll never forget.

Not to be missed. SEASON 5 EPISODE 2 remastered dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released 2012.

JR CALLED BACK INTO ACTION!
16 May 2024
This story was a very good fit for JR, all about a counselor for a drug rehab program who is killed, made to look like he overdosed. JR cleverly enters the program as the next young counselor, obviously undercover to expose the mastermind behind an illegal drug operation. Mark Shera does a fine job with this role, and is backed by a top cast worth mentioning.

Ed Harris guest stars, and in a role that seemed to be written for him, likewise actress Madeleine Stowe. Both actors starred in CHINA MOON in the 90s. Alex Courtney has an early role, who had recently appeared in LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, and we get an early glimpse of Sean Penn (as Sam), probably recommended by his famous father, Leo, who directed for producer Quinn Martin.

Cult movie fans will definitely recognize Dick Miller, as the deputy. Miller starred in many of Roger Corman's camp classic sci fi and horror films. Miller passed in 2019 leaving a legacy of offbeat screen characters.

Very good direction from Kenneth Gilbert, who headed 12 episodes for the series. JR's case, but never count Barnaby out. SEASON 8 EPISODE 10 remastered color CBS/Paramount dvd box set. Released 2018.

HITCH IN THE EGG BUSINESS?
16 May 2024
Fabulous dark comedy, and directed by the master himself, which always is a treat. Yes I agree, there's a touch of Edgar Allen Poe in this little masterpiece, kind of in the tradition of all those insane Poe revivals that producer Roger Corman would soon do, starring the great Vincent Price. This episode may have inspired Corman, to a degree.

Lawrence Harvey, soon to become a Hollywood star in such classics as BUTTERFIELD 8 and SUMMER AND SMOKE, plays --of all things -- a chicken farmer who has an unfaithful, but beautiful lady friend (best played by Hazel Court). She finally comes back home, but he's a bit wiser now and enjoys strangling chickens. She's NEXT.

Excellent writing by series pro James Cavanagh, who also did some macabre writing for Boris Karloff's tv series. With Hitchcock and Karloff on your resume, how can you lose? Additional talented British support from veteran actor and director Robert Douglas as the police inspector and Patrick Macnee as Sergeant Theron, shortly before his debut on the AVENGERS. You simply cannot overlook this cast.

According to production notes, this was the first episode produced at Universal Studios, only a few miles away from the old Republic Studios where the first four seasons were filmed. It was a smart move as future episodes would use the studios expansive backlot, especially Hitchcock's hour long series. Also more convenient for Hitch so he would be closer to his film projects, at the time working on NORTH BY NORTHWEST and next, PSYCHO.

A dynamic start to the 5th Season. Recommended late night entertainment with a cup of tea. Remastered dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released January 2012.

CHIP AND POLLY BACK HOME.
16 May 2024
I agree with the last reviewer. Yes, the writers of ALL IN THE FAMILY, which would premier not too long after this episode, may have taken some (serious) notes from episodes of this classic show. Let's face it, MY THREE SONS was generational, having been on the air for years and hit a wide variety of topics, though on the lighter side.

Chip and Polly return to LA and get situated in their new digs, however Polly's dad is the proverbial nay sayer, only to cause more confusion, especially for his daughter. The question we all asked back in the day, would Tom (Norman Alden) have treated a son the same way? Interesting.

One thing for sure, Alden's character was not too popular among us kids back in the day.

Without giving too much away, there is a happy ending. Very good writing on the part of George Tibbles and excellent direction by Fred De Cordova, as usual, who got some excellent performances from Ronnie Troup.

As always, Fred MacMurray and Beverly Garland made a super mom and dad.

Best of SEASON 11 EPISODE 9 remastered color.

BETTY RIGHTS A WRONG.
16 May 2024
Shades of the Alfred Hitchcock classic drama THE WRONG MAN, only tailored for a cop show. Done many times, but this is a well written story, possibly inspirational to prosecuting similar real life crimes.

Betty's good friend is the victim of a rape, however, it's not an open and shut case. Her friend is convinced "another" man is responsible and won't budge, even if it means the wrongly accused person goes to prison. It takes Betty to right a horrible wrong, going the extra mile --as she always does -- to reveal the true culprit who can easily get away with the crime and endanger more lives.

This is what makes the story so interesting, as opposed to the usual hunt and capture showdown. Sort of in the tradition of a Perry Mason episode, with a 70s slant. Very well directed by Winrich Kolbe, his only episode for the series, best known for the classic STAR TREK tv episodes of the 80s and 90s. A missed opportunity he did not direct more shows.

Written by Paul Robert Coyle, who later wrote several episodes for JAKE AND THE FAT MAN, starring William Conrad.

Popular actress Lynette Mettey guest stars, who turned up in many cop shows, later on MASH playing nurses and a voice actor for decades in tv commercials. Famous bad guy Robert Davi (still acting today) appears in an early role. But is he the real villain?

I agree with the trivia notes. And may have an answer. Betty has a bandage on the right side of her forehead, as do many other injured victims through the series run. It could be, from a camera angle vantage point, the best place to put the bandage. It's all appearance, and where the camera lands. A simple answer, but it makes sense and seems to be the case in both in movies and tv.

ITEM 2. Another answer is many people tend to be right handed, including makeup artists, so when applying makeup they would naturally favor the right side of the face. A very interesting observation, and a kewpie doll to the person who caught it. In all my years of writing, I never thought of it!

Watch this for a another good performance by Lee Meriwether. SEASON 8 EPISODE 9 remastered CBS color. DVD release 2018.

The Twilight Zone: Mr. Denton on Doomsday (1959)
Season 1, Episode 3

STRONG MAN POTION NUMBER 9
16 May 2024
A variation of the famous song, LOVE POTION NUMBER 9... which actually may have inspired the later TZ episode called "The Chaser." A little confusing, but fun, as only Rod Serling would want it.

Ironically, best of movie bad men Dan Duryea plays Al Denton, a hopeless drunk in a western town. The real villain here is none other than Martin Landau (at his meanest!) playing Dan Hotaling, his worst nightmare. This was quite a switch in casting (to begin with) because Duryea played desperados for years.

Here's the kicker. A strange gentleman named "Henry J. Fate" (well played by Malcolm Atterbury) offers Denton an elixir that will make him clean and sober and a crack shot. Very similar in technique to "The Chaser" episode, also from Season 1, where a professor gives an elixir to a man that will --instead-- improve his love life.

Watch this for the two memorable performances of Dan Duryea and Martin Landau, expertly directed by Allen Reisner. Unfortunately, this was the only episode he directed, best known for HAWAII FIVE O and the GREEN HORNET. Also look for future soap opera star Jeanne Cooper as Liz.

True, tv westerns at the time were a ratings hit, and this episode was probably Rod Serling's eerie contribution to the Old West. Very ingenious.

Best of SEASON 2 EPISODE 3 remastered.

HOW NOT TO HONEYMOON?
15 May 2024
Of course, nothing will ever top Steve and Barbara's goofy honeymoon, but... Chip and Polly have their "moments" in this very clever episode.

Writer George Tibbles was at it again, lots of imagination, and --of all things -- he put Chip and Polly in the same Mexican hotel where Steve and Barbara stayed. What a trip, again with shades of LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE. The hilarious catch to all this, the hotel is now a "singles" establishment, so that means newlyweds Chip and Polly may have to GO IT ALONE -- and stay in separate rooms. Are you serious?

Creative writing 101.

What also puts this classic episode over the top are some fine supporting actors. Veteran Spanish actor Remo Pisani, who retired not too long after this episode, plays Pepe. Remo appeared a lot on BONANZA. Also look for Natividad Vacio as Paco, veteran of many classic films and tv shows. You always recognized his face, but never knew his name.

Two well known juvenile actors guest star; Veronica Cartwright, plays Ruth, known for THE BIRDS, and Bobby Diamond, who co-starred on the 50s series, FURY. At around the time this episode was filmed, Bobby was studying to be a criminal lawyer, and got his license in 1971. Bobby passed in 2019.

A must see for Chip and Polly, who make a cute couple. They really do. SEASON 11 EPISODE 8 remastered color. Thanks METV for this super episode.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Touché (1959)
Season 4, Episode 35
10/10
BILL AND PHIL AND THE DUEL.
15 May 2024
No surprise that series regular John Brahm directed this episode, linked to many adventure shows, such as the MAN FROM UNCLE and the GIRL FROM UNCLE.

Yes, it's an adventure, albeit Hitchcock style. In a role that perfectly suits his style, Paul Douglas plays a wealthy gentleman called Bill Fleming, a two fisted old timer with a lot of spark, who happens to have a beautiful wife (Dodie Heath) who cheats on him, and really doesn't care.

The most outrageous twist of this story concerns what to do about it. Bill happens to meet up with sly Robert Morse (as Phil) who suggests he can actually get away with murder if he challenges his wife's lover to a duel! This has to rank as the most creative writing the series ever had, and it's rather fascinating because there's a bit of legal truth to it as you will see.

Paul Douglas is his usual rambling self in this episode, over the top and so much fun to watch, especially his exasperation. Unfortunately, Douglas died suddenly not too long after this episode, shortly after appearing in an episode of the TWILIGHT ZONE, which never aired. It's roles like this that made him so popular.

Robert Morse is equally good (in a very early part), playing a character that also fits his style. Without giving too much away, Morse steals the show. Morse passed a few years ago as did Dodie Heath (at age 96 in 2023), best known for the classic film, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK.

Excellent writing on the part of William Jerome Fay, who wrote fourteen colorful episodes for Hitch.

Not to be missed, especially for the famous leads. SEASON 4 EPISODE 35 remastered dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released 2008.

Cry Panic (1974 TV Movie)

THE TOWN WITH LOTS OF SECRETS...
15 May 2024
This is one of the famous ABC MOVIES OF THE WEEK we all grew up on as kids, not to be forgotten. Still just as good today as it was then, and yes, I agree with the last reviewer, this is perhaps John Forsythe's finest role. He deserved an Emmy nod.

The plot is very simple, and reminscent of lots of cop shows, all about a small town with strange characters. Forsythe plays a salesman called Dave Ryder, travelling through a remote part of southern California, who happens to accidentally run down an important man. When he goes for the police -- the man's body conveniently disappears and the locals try to make it look like he's some sort of a crackpot. You have to love this, because it's a heck of a charade.

Interestingly, it turns out the dead man practically owned the town and everybody in it, and was having an affair with the sheriff's wife. A contemporary PEYTON PLACE to be sure. Fascinating to watch.

Super writing on the part of Jack B. Sowards, famous for writing the classic Star Trek movie, THE WRATH OF KHAN. Prior to this tv movie, Sowards wrote the popular 70s mystery, THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS.

Bolstered by a terrific cast. Earl Holliman is memorable as the "easy going" sheriff. Same for Norman Alden, playing the good old country doctor.

Ralph Meeker plays Chuck and veteran actress Claudia McNeil plays the housekeeper (who knows all the secrets), Mrs. Hanson. In a stand-out performance is Anne Francis (as Julie), the lady of mystery, a role she was so good at. Watch Anne at her very best.

Look for famous bit actor Bob Harks (who appeared in nearly every tv show in small roles for decades), this time playing the driver of a hearse. He should have written a book about his on screen adventures.

A real deal treat, and the ending is one you won't forget. Forsythe is THAT CLOSE to going to jail himself. Some beautiful countryside and desert locations, and not to forget that mysterious ranch house. Everything clicks.

Beware of the meat locker scene!

Released on dvd in 2003, a three movie set, along with AND THEN THERE WERE NONE (1945) and Vincent Price's THE BAT (1959). Shop around because some (not all) dvd box sets are very expensive.

Barnaby Jones: Homecoming for a Dead Man (1979)
Season 8, Episode 8
10/10
DEAD MAN PLAYING HIDE AND SEEK!
15 May 2024
Tribute to director Bruce Kessler, who passed in April 2024 at age 88. Kessler headed a long list of tv shows, including MCCLOUD and HARDCASTLE AND MCCORMICK. He was a popular director, and does a super job in this nifty mystery. Kessler directed two episodes for the series.

This one is Barnaby's case. He's at a sporting event and happens to spot a man (Ed Nelson) who looks very familiar. Two amazing reasons. The man in question, called Gibson, was a suspected gold thief and supposedly killed in a plane crash.

True, if you're a cop show buff, spotting someone who is supposed to be dead is a familiar storyline, however, this is a very clever tale plus Kessler's excellent direction. Jack B. Sowards wrote the script, also working for producer Quinn Martin on the STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO.

This is well cast; Ed Nelson always makes a memorable man in question? I do agree with the last reviewer, his fake beard is not one of the best, although it may have been done that way for obvious reasons. William Smithers and Jennifer Holmes guest star. Holmes is known for NEWHART. Popular actress Linda Cristal appears, who passed in 2020. TV western fans will remember her for HIGH CHAPARRAL. Look for veteran actress Patricia Smith, as Helen.

Barnaby's keen sense of detection is put to good use. SEASON 8 EPISODE 8 remastered color dvd box set. Released 2018.

CHIP AND POLLY TAKE THE PLUNGE!
14 May 2024
How some things never change. This story is not to be confused with the season 1 episode -- 10 years ago! -- with the same title, all about Mike and his girlfriend possibly getting married. At the time, Chip and Robbie were just kids!

Chip is all grown up and agrees with Polly they should just forget everybody and everything and elope. Another poignant episode written by George Tibbles, and with a few surprises. Steve has no problem with the elopement, though he tells Chip it's best to tell Polly's dad (Norman Alden). Easier said than done.

Mr. Williams just doesn't like the whole setup, and even goes as far as to hire a private eye (Sidney Clute) to follow Polly! This is fairly melodramatic stuff, but you know everything is on Chip's side because he's a responsible guy. Mr. Williams, though, is not that easily convinced. Norman Alden is perfect for this role, a real stick in the mud. Not many of us kids back in the day were fans of his!

Steve and Barbara are the BEST through all this, and Mrs. Williams (played by Doris Singleton) has some words of wisdom for her doubting husband.

A real good episode with lots of memories. Guest star Sidney Clute was no stranger to playing detectives. He's best known for two classic roles; Detective Simms on MCCLOUD and Detective La Guardia on CAGNEY AND LACEY.

SEASON 11 EPISODE 7 remastered color.
