The Marvels (2023)

Disapointingly Meh
10 February 2024
I was honestly fairly disappointed by this one. I wasn't expecting to be blown away, but I had higher hopes for it than it delivered on. It felt like they were trying to fit too much movie into an hour and a half. A lot of the scenes, especially the emotional ones, just felt unearned and disjointed, and by extension, many of the relationships didn't feel very believable. There must have been some poor directing going on, because there were more than a few moments that felt flat and clunky

It did have all the trademarks of a marvel movie, to be fair. It had humor, it had action, it had emotional moments - but it just didn't really blend it all together very smoothly, which was pretty disappointing because I think the premise had a lot of potential.

Echo (2023–2024)

Beautiful & Exciting
11 January 2024
As a straight white man, let me tell you: don't listen to the people rating this poorly. It's just the usual white boy edgelords who can't stand to consume any media that isn't about them.

Echo is a beautiful exploration of generational trauma and wisdom, infused into an exciting side story of the greater Marvel universe. Sure, it's clearly used at least in part as set up, presumably for an upcoming reboot of Daredevil. But it's also a fantastic show in it's own right. It showcases disabilities without having them define the characters, it explores native American culture in a way that is compelling, and not exploitative, and it tells an interesting, emotional story along the way. And if you're only here to see kicky-kicky punchy-punch, there's plenty of that to go around as well.

Echo is, if you ask me, one of the best Marvel shows, and definitely worth watching.

Pulpy, Messy, Campy, Surprisingly Okay
25 December 2023
Rebel Moon gives you a lot to chew on all at once. Is it a drama, an action-comedy, a sci-fi western? It's hard to tell, and you never really get a chance to get your bearings. As soon as the action starts, you're on a one way trip straight through this new universe Snyder has envisioned, and this vehicles does not stop.

It became clear to me not too far into the movie that I was going to have to adjust my expectations if I was going to enjoy it. A thoughtfully considered and painstakingly crafted story this is not. It's more like the pulp fiction daydream of a very excitable 14 year old geek. It's less of an entree and more of an appetizer platter. It'll fill you up, but it tastes a bit strange all mixed together on your plate.

That said, if you can temper your expectations with that in mind, and just enjoy the ride, Rebel Moon isn't all that bad. It has some pretty cool ideas, and the make-up work, costuming, and props are all pretty sleek, so there's plenty of eye candy in that regard. There are also some fabulous actors in the cast. They're talent is a bit hampered by the poor direction, but they're still great at what they do.

Overall, I think if you can take off your critic hat for a moment, turn off you brain, and don't take the film too seriously, you MIGHT just find yourself enjoying it.

The Killer (2023)
4/10
Little to Like
19 November 2023
Simply put, there is very little to like about this movie. It's only saving graces are the cinematography and choreography. It looks nice, it's smooth, and the acting is as good as you'd expect. That's about where it ends, however.

With a completely irredeemable main character, some high school level cynical rambling, and the same basic plotline that's been toyed with by an endless score of subpar action dramas, The Killer fails to really do anything other than kind of glorify being a cold, emotionless sociopath who only cares about his token Helpless Girl.

There's no one to relate to, and as far as people to root for, you're more or less left trying to choose between the lesser of two evils. Who would you rather win, a psychopath or a mobster? Well, I'd rather just watch something else, personally.

Assassin's Creed Mirage (2023 Video Game)
4/10
Two Steps Back
13 October 2023
Every step forward this series has made with the last two releases seems to come with two steps back. Mirage is no different. From overly difficult, clunky combat, to a lackluster story, to twenty minute puzzles that end up only rewarding you with "gear schematics" for gear you don't even use. Every system seems to have taken a backslide into the realm of irritating and inconsistent. The whole game feels rushed and poorly thought out. Half of the skill on the skill trees are unimaginative and only questionably useful. Compared to Odyssey, which I personally consider the best entry into the series, this game feels like we're back at Brotherhood - not a terrible game in its own right, but a far cry from the masterpiece that was Odyssey. I know they were trying to make homages to the original games, but they picked all the wrong places to make them. The clunkiness, the bugs, the tepid story telling - these are not the things people remember fondly about the old games, but that's what we got with Mirage.

Very Unrealistic
11 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, cards on the table, I'm only about 10 minutes into the first episode, but I was truly blown away by the lack of realism in one of the first scenes. The MC is sitting on a bench, waiting for an emt to check him out, when he spots the bad guy in the crowd. He says more than once, "that's the guy" and then runs after him, but none of the many police officers around follow him or even engage at all, including the cop who was JUST talking to him? And then he gets into a fight with the guy a couple blocks away, and fires his GUN several times, and STILL no cops come rushing over to assist? I mean, there's suspending disbelief and then there's just nonsense, and so far this is falling squarely in the latter category. There should have been at least three cops following him the second he identified the guy.

The Hate is Proof of a Toxic Fandom
10 September 2022
I know this is going to be an unpopular sentiment, but I feel like the huge amount of hate for this movie is proof that the majority of the fandom is still just a bunch of cishet white boi edgelords who only want to watch movies about people who look exactly like them playing mary sue heros who never do anything wrong - folks who feel threatened and emasculated by Jane and Valkyrie.

After seeing all the bad reviews, I went into this cautiously, and I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, there were a few scenes that felt a little bit rushed, or ever so slightly too irreverent, but the humor was there. The heart was there, the action was there. Everything that makes a great Waititi movie was there. It's a good movie. Certainly leagues better than the first few Thor films. I think a lot of those white boi fans were just feeling to insecure to see it.

Very disappointing
22 June 2022
From a lackluster plot and a poor script, to bad direction and even worse choreography, Obi-Wan Kenobi really failed to deliver on any expectations. I haven't been particularly impressed by any of the Disney+ Star Wars shows, but this one really takes the cake of mediocrity. With episodes ranging from 30-40 minutes of actual content, and only 6 episodes total, you could barely even make the argument that this is a full season of television. I truly don't understand why its apparently so hard to make a decent Star Wars story, here, they failed to do so once again.

There's Suspending Disbelief, and There's This
2 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Full disclosure, I only made it about forty five minutes into the movie before I had to turn it off. It starts off with some poorly written dialogue, and some lazy and hackneyed attempts to make you care about the characters (the main guy has a wife! And oh my, she's pregnant!) which fall extremely flat. That put me on the fence, but I thought, hey, it's a dumb action movie. The dialogue doesn't matter THAT much, right? So I kept watching.

It goes on to tell us that a single arms dealer was able to orchestrate the biggest terrorist attack the world has ever seen - killing several world leaders from the world's most powerful countries, infiltrating pretty much all of London's emergency services, and hacking London's entire electrical grid from a laptop in some warehouse in the middle east - all planned and executed in TWO years - and expects us to just accept it.

Well, I'm sorry, but suspension of disbelief only goes so far. I can believe and magic and space lasers as easily as the next guy, but it HAS to be reasonable within the world it's set in. Suspension of disbelief doesn't mean that you can just write whatever brainless, insane plot you want to without considering realism at all. You still have to ground the plot in SOME reality if you want it to be taken seriously. And as a film that takes place in our reality, I can tell you it was not grounded in the slightest.

I finally turned it off when a motorcycle helmet was able to smash through bullet proof glass that countless bullets could not. I mean, come on. At least put SOME thought into it.

Hoping For a Better Season 2
27 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this show. I had been excited for it since it was announced. I tried to like it throughout the first "season." But on a second viewing, the problems are just more noticable.

My biggest problem with the show is the length. Eight 30-minute episodes, aired weekly? Unheard of. That's why the word "season" appears in quotes earlier - because season one was approximately half a season long. You can either have an 8-episode season with 40-60 minute episodes, or you can have 20-30 minute episodes, but have at least 16 episodes, you can't have it both ways.

My second issue is that there are several scenes and lines that are just so cheesy and unbelievable that they completely break the immersion and the flow of the show for me. These moments are poignantly exemplified in the second episode, where, after a pretty boring and pooly choreographed fight with a giant rhino-like alien, our hero kills the beast with ONE stab to the shoulder with a small, ineffectual knife. This after he had already raked it's entire left flank with flames, which seemed to have no effect whatsoever, implying that this animal is quite tough. Apparently that's not the case, however, since a small incision into its shoulder cand kill it instantly.

That type of laziness in the writing continues to rear its ugly head throughout the show, with clumsy lines such as, "I'm a mandalorian, weapons are part of my religion," which are awkwardly shoved into conversation to seemingly save the creators the effort of working an explanation of mandalorian culture into the narrative naturally. Instead of drawing the show out into a longer, more satisfying and well rounded narrative experience, they tried to force everything into a compact and restrictive 30 minutes episode mark.

And yet, despite this, they still managed to make a lot of the show feel kind of... boring to me? Somehow, it still feels like not very much happens at all in the whole first season. Precious episode time was wasted on unnecessary landscape shots and lingering in moments that did not need the attention, while real narrative progression was left dragging its feet through the little over four hours of actual content "season" one provided.

Now, a lot of that may sound harsh, but I do think this show has potential. With just a bit more attention to detail and focus, it could be great. But season one simply wasn't

Immersion IMMEDIATELY Broken
20 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
At approximately 10 minutes into the film, after the ship was hit by a solar flare, and the crew are being woken out of cryo sleep, one of the pods begins malfunctioning. The crew attempt to pry it open, but are too late, as the inside of the pod is filled with flames. FLAMES.

LOL WHAT?

This instantly shattered the immersion of the movie for me. What kind of cryo pod - something that is DESIGNED to keep people ALIVE would have such a glaring flaw? How could that even happen? The pod gets messed up and therefore it turns into an INCINERATOR? I mean, I know these films require a certain suspension of disbelief, but this is just lazy. Of all the ways a cryp pod could malfunction and end up killing its inhabitant, being filled with FIRE is what they went with? Really? That's not dramatic, that's straight up parody.

I had a very hard time taking the movie seriously after that and it's indicative of all the choices made in this film going forward.

Failing to Answer Any of The Questions It Asks
19 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There is a lot about this movie that requires a little bit more suspension of disbelief than your average sci-fi flick. From biologists who have zero interest in biology, to standard scientific and archeological practices being completely ignored by all of the scientists. Many of the actions and motivations of the characters don't seem to fit with who they are supposed to be, and the viewer is frequently left thinking, "why would they do that?"

However, leaving aside the many and frequent breaks from immersion this film offers, the real problems are revealed to be deeper, and the biggest one becomes apparent: it had no real direction. From the get go, the plot seemed to meander around, absently playing with a few ideas that it never really fleshed out, and asking big questions it never actually answered. This lack of direction compounds as the film reaches its climax, and causes it to fall quite short. Moments that should have been impactful and emotional where instead tepid and unmoving. The issue, I believe, is that the plot was never fully fleshed out to begin with. They started with this vague analogy of Prometheus giving humanity fire, representing the 'engineers' creating mankind, and it never really evolves beyond that half-hearted metaphor. What we're left with is a movie thats not really about anything in the broader sense. The entire plot could be summed up with this: some people go to an alien world to find ancient aliens, they find one and it kills all of them except one, who then decides to go to the alien home world, the end. And reading that, you've essentially already seen Prometheus. Truly, the only important moments in the entire film were those last few, where Dr. Shaw makes that fateful decision. You almost didn't even need the rest of the movie.

Overall, it's a meandering, directionless mess of a movie that doesn't answer any of the questions it asks. But I suppose if you need something to kill a few hours, you could do worse.

We Happy Few (2018 Video Game)

Great Concept That Fails to Deliver
30 August 2020
The concept, writing, and story are all solid, interesting, and compelling, but We Happy Few fails to check the most important boxes for a video game - playability. From clunky stealth mechanics that barely function, to enemies teleporting around, and overall buggy and shallow gameplay, this game really falls down mechanically. It seems to emphasize stealth a lot, but the stealth system is so poorly implemented that it makes that approach essentially untenable. However, there is little need for it, as the enemy AI is so feeble that most enemies you can basically just walk by and they won't notice you. And even if they do, escaping them is pitifully easy.

A game ought to be fun to play above all else, but We Happy Few simply isn't very.

Hunters (2020–2023)

Disappointingly Hard to Watch
23 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
From the trailer, I was expecting a compelling drama, with a subtly, and intrigue. The line "They are among us and they have plans." was in my head for days.

Then, I watched the first episode. Within ten minutes, I knew I had to revise my expectations. This wasn't an intelligent drama, it was a Tarantino movie. Okay, I can work with that. Not what I was hoping for, but Inglorious Basterds as always a satisfying watch.

Now I'm at the end of the second episode, and I'm left feeling... empty. The humor just isn't there, nor are the satisfying scenes of gruesome deaths for our favorite villains. Instead, we have brutal scenes of the holocaust, the senseless slaughter of Jewish families. We have horror stories from the camps, and the deep pain and sadness of those moments. But there's no balancing of the scales. There are some moments of bland humor, some Tarantino-eqsue splash screens. But the justice, the sense of chaos... missing entirely.

The second episode sees the hunters track down and interrogate a nazi in his recording studio. And after a dramatic and unhappy faux-trial, we seem them torture him for information. They blow his ear drums out, which has a certain ironic justice to it in theory, but we don't feel it in the scene. Instead, we see Jonah squirm and balk, and try to stop them. Instead of the righteous justice dolled out by the Basterds, we are asked to empathize with this Nazi. And it ends up just feeling awful from every side. We hate what he's done, we hate who he is, but now, we even have to hate when he is delivered justice.

Maybe it gets better. I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath.

Exactly What You Think It Is
23 January 2020
John Wick 2 is no more or less than exactly what I expected it to be. It's around two hours Keanu Reeve fighting and killing a bunch of goons in different ways. No real surprises, nothing unexpected, just straight forward action.

While this film does rise above its predecessor in narrative aspects, it still retains the same formulaic style. Being unshackled from the necessity of world building gives John Wick 2 the room to flesh out its criminal underworld somewhat, and show us a broader view of his world. That being said however, at its core, John Wick 2 is still a very basic action movie.

Don't go into this expecting complex characters or a compelling story line. But if what you're looking for is some mindless action, this movie will suit your needs just fine.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019 Video Game)

By No Means a Need to Play Game
17 January 2020
Seems like the writing was given a pretty major back seat on this game. The character and especially relationship development is nonexistent, the plot is barebones, and the climax was about as exciting and impactful as pocket lint. Maybe they could have fleshed it out more if they had included the other half of the game that I have to assume was planned at some point.

What the game lacks in writing, it tries to make up for with gameplay, and it does a pasable job at this. For the most part, the combat is quick and enjoyable, without falling into the "hack and slash" button mashing pitfall. However, the levels are extremely linear, lacking much incentive to explore, unless you happen to care about the collectibles, which fall into two categories: 1. Extra EXP/HP/Force power, which accounts for maybe 1/5 - 1/4 of collectibles. And 2. Useless cosmetics items which are mostly drab color schemes for your poncho or a slight variation of your lightsaber hilt. The only customizable options I really cared about were lightsaber colors, and those are not collectibles, so I never felt any desire to go back to planets and explore them with new force powers.

Although the gameplay was certainly the best part of this game, it wasn't without its problems. They were mostly little things, like certain boss fights being poorly designed, or platforming mechanics being frustratingly clunky in certain areas. But little things can add up, and I quickly doubt myself having more moments of irritation than I had of enjoyment, which resulted in me kind of looking forward to being done with the game.

Overall, it's an alright game. If you like platforming, especially, you'll probably like this game. But if you're looking for a good RPG with a satisfying story and characters that you can adore... well, The Witcher 3 is always a great option.

A Boat Without a Rudder
30 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Before I say anything, I would just like to point out to those people saying that those who rate this movie low went into the movie with their minds already made up - I hadn't read a single review of this movie before I saw it. I had zero preconceived notions. It was just a bad movie.

The one saving grace this film has is its excellent visuals. It seems like the choreographers, set designers, and visual effects teams were the only people working on this movie who had any idea what they were trying to do.

Interspersed between the many scenes that had me rolling my eyes, groaning internally, or just outright laughing at their absurdity, there were actually quite a few scenes that, at least visually, were extremely well done. What stood out to me the most was the scene when Rey was meeting Palpatine for the first time, and his half living corpse descended to meet her on its giant spider-like, robotic life support system. It was a moment of spookiness that went far beyond anything we've seen from star wars before.

However, visuals aside, The Rise of Skywalker was, on the whole, a huge let down. Between simply rehashing the same old story, to literally just reusing the age old villain, this movie felt like they just plugged their new characters into the old Star Wars Formula and then sent it off without looking at it. The plot is muddled and uninspired, the writing is often more cringey than anything, and the amount of deus ex machina that happens is outstanding.

It's very clear that they didn't really know what direction that wanted to go in by the fact that we're thrown into this new palatine plot right at the start of the movie completely out of nowhere. There was not even a single hint in the prior films that there was some big, unknown baddy pulling the strings behind the scenes, and then all of the sudden, Palpatine! It felt like we missed an entire movie between The Last Jedi and the opening crawl of Rise of Skywalker. And yet, somehow, by the end of the movie, it was dragging so much I couldn't wait for it to finally end.

All of the little things aside, though, the final nail in the coffin for me was in the last 30 minutes. You can maybe guess what I'm talking about - the kiss between Rey and Keylo. Apart from their entire connection making absolutely ZERO sense, this terrible choice was the ONE THING I was hoping against hope, ever since the first movie, that they wouldn't do. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever, there is absolutely no reason that there would be any romantic, or even platonic bond between these two characters, and yet they decided to canonize it anyway. Absolutely atrocious story telling, does major damage to Rey's character as a whole, and, not to mention, flies directly in the face of abuse survivors. I personally know several people who were deeply upset by this decision, and were brought to tears by it. Deeply disgraceful choice to make in 2019.

It truly amazes me that they can't seem to get star wars movies right. It's such a vast and interesting universe, with such a huge catalogue of potential Extended Universe stories they could explore. And yet, they just keep beating this old, dead horse to pieces over and over and over.

A Rare Gem
11 June 2019
3% is one of those rare shows that only gets better and better as it goes. Season 3, so far, is shaping up to be the most enthralling season yet, which, let me tell you, is absolutely saying something! The world continues to be fleshed out, and the already quite complex characters are only getting more interesting.

Do yourself a favor, watch at least to episode three before you pass judgement. You won't regret it!

Squandered Potential
25 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really can't possibly comprehend what they were thinking with this finale, other than just "lets get this over with." From completely erasing seasons of character development with Jaime, to abruptly ending the whole "winter is coming" arc with a quick, anticlimactic death for the Night King, and then randomly giving Bran the crown for seemingly no reason at all, without anyone else really even trying to get it, the writers have delivered possibly the worst send off to this show that they possibly could have.

They spent the first 7 seasons carefully building up to what should have been some truly amazing climaxes, only to abandon pretty much everything in the final season. Honestly, most of this season, especially the final episode, could easily have been written by a sophomore in high school.

There are not words enough in the english language to describe what a bad job they did sending off this show.

"Viking" Destiny? I don't think so.
23 February 2019
Granted, I only made it through about fifteen minutes of this movie, but from what I did watch, the writers seem to have done very little research about the Vikings. The whole thing reads a lot more like a story set in medieval England or Scotland than it does as a Viking story. Culture, clothing, customs, all full of anachronisms and inaccuracies. This is exemplified in one of the first scenes as we see two characters fighting - one wielding a very Scottish claymore. They may as well have been wearing tartan kilts.

Add to the mountain of anachronisms the feeble story and painfully droll dialogue and you are left with a pretty boring and hard to watch film. If you look through the reviews of Viking Destiny, many of its defenders will cite it's low budget and independent film status as reasons to cut it some slack, and yes, if it's worst errors had been things such as poor costume design, bad lighting, etc - maybe that would have been an excuse, but there is not excuse for bad writing, and that's where this movie falls down the most. In fact, it's only saving grace is that the actors do a valiant job of trying to wring as much character as they can out of the dry and uninspired writing - not that it does much good.

Overall, Viking Destiny is unequivocally a failure. Absolutely not worth a watch if you have any expectations whatsoever.

One of My Favorite Shows on Netflix

Travelers had been showing up in my netflix recommendations for some time and I was never really compelled to watch it. That is, until I had nothing else to watch. I didn't have high expectations going into it, but I am happy to say I was absolutely blown away! Every episode is compelling and keeps you on the edge of your seat, and it's only gotten better since Netflix took over production. I loved season 3 and already can't wait for season 4!

A Strange Journey, A Heartwarming Destination
25 September 2018
In Maniac, we are presented with another version of reality to our own - one in which the concepts of the future born of 1980's science fiction became the reality of the present. And this offbeat setting is the stage upon which we are told a story about relationships - about their hardships, their heartbreaks, their inevitable sorrows, but, ultimately, also the strength they lend us, and the importance of these human connections as we all do our best to make our way through the uniquely strange experience of life. Maniac is a story about friendship, about family - about the connections we have to one another. It's a story about love. And one that we all should hear.

Tomb Raider (2018)

Flummoxed by Bad Reviews
16 July 2018
I simply don't see where people are coming from with these bad reviews. What were you expecting? It's a Tomb Raider movie, and as far as I'm concerned it hit all the necessary points and really exceeded my expectations! They did a very nice job of nodding to the fact that it's based on a game, with little puzzles and video game-esque action scenes, all while managing to tell a compelling and emotional story. That's not easy to do! Alacia Vikander does an amazing job as Lara Croft, really tying the film together and delivering a powerful and emotional performance.

Sure, it was fairly predictable, but again, it's a Tomb Raider movie. Were you really expecting some kind of critically acclaimed masterpiece that always keeps you on the edge of your seat? Or are you one of those people who were expecting ti feel like you were playing a Tomb Raider game?

Video game adaptations are as a rule extremely difficult to pull off. You don't just have to satisfy a regular audience, but you also have to satisfy fans of the games. People form the ladder camp, I feel, often have far to high of expectations for what the experience will be like. You simply can't put an hour's worth of solving a single puzzle in a two hour action movie. Neither can you capture the visceral feeling of playing a game. At the end of the day, games are about the experience. Movies aren't. They're about the story. You can't expect a film adaptation to be the same as the game.

I for one, was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this film and would be delighted to see a sequel.

Truly Awful
8 January 2018
One of the worst movies I have had the misfortune to see in my young life. The plot is a shambles of half-formed ideas, campy stunts, and leftover jokes from the first film, held up only by what dregs of nostalgia they can still squeeze out of you with the line "do we have an accord?" The plot is boring and contrived, the acting is lackluster, and Johny Depp's performance can only be described as pathetic. The only thing keeping me from giving this one star was the fact that I was able to get through it. And even that was a miracle. What was supposedly meant as an homage to the first film became more of an insult to it. It was the first time in a decade that a Pirates movie was actually worse than I was expecting. Somehow they managed to lower my already terminally low expectation. I can only hope that this was the franchise's last, pitiful breath and it can finally be allowed to die.

About as Compelling as A Geico Commercial
21 June 2017
Sometimes splitting the difference leaves you with a tepid, muddled result. That's what happened here, I think. It seems like they wanted to do both a gritty, emotional war movie, but also a light hearted, funny, and witty action movie. What they ended up with, however, was a flimsy, boring, and wholly uninspiring story. The lack of a solid direction trickled down from the author, though the producers and director, and all the way down to the actors. No one really knew at any given moment exactly what the tone of the scene was supposed to be, which came across as a sort of nonchalance in the acting. It sorely lacked in dramatic tension, and any real danger the characters were ever in, was always quickly dealt with. The characters were one dimensional at best, and the plot was as simple and un-compelling as they come. Overall, it seems like about as much effort went into this film as it takes to watch it. Would not recommend.
