Paris in Love (2021– )
9/10
Brave and sweet
12 December 2023
Watching Paris try to metabolize and talk about her experience at Provo, or talk to her family about it, is impressive and awesome. One of the effects of trauma is that it's really hard, almost impossible, to talk about. But as she says, naming it and not hiding it is therapeutic.

The setting is so surreal, being surrounded by that much wealth and beauty - omg the clothes - but her vulnerability comes through the camera. Just like Marilyn. People say, Oh if they only knew about Marilyn, she could have been helped. Paris is using her platform to help those harmed by residential schools and therapies, especially showing us how to heal the family relationships. It's courageous.

Very Brave

Warning: Spoilers
To talk about the abuse someone suffers in those 'schools' is very difficult. When other reviewers doubt it is abuse, it just shows that they have never experienced it and they are fortunate. Of course Paris gets to produce this film because the material is so incredibly sensitive. You are woken up in the middle of the night, kidnapped and brought to a boot camp prison in effect. Because they tell you that you deserve it and your parents, your protectors, agreed to it (or some version they tell the parents), it makes you incredibly vulnerable. They probably treated her worse because of who she was. And she suffered sexual abuse there which makes it all that much worse. Because of the shame, it's hard to talk about to a professional let alone the entire world. But Paris used her celebrity to speak up, advocate in Congress, and help get laws passed. It is so huge for the others who have no voice but also suffered in these places.

And the story was told with a nice balance of the sensational and the practical. Paris is a celebrity persona, that's her job, and she's very successful at it but this story humanized her for those of us who only know the persona. Honestly, it reveals a lot about the business of celebrity and the filmmaker did it with a sympathetic eye. It's so easy to bash these women but this film was more objective about that part which was fascinating.

Moving

As a graduate student studying counseling, we learned that the new (at that time) DSM-V had just been revised to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder. From that point, the manual and the concept of diagnosing mental disorders has always seemed a flawed concept. This film brings those flaws into vivid detail and it brought tears to my eyes for each story, for each loving family.

Also during that degree program, I asked the Special Education professor if the Down's syndrome or Autistic students would benefit from peer groups and she said, "No! Absolutely not," because they can't relate to each other. This film also negates that "evidence-driven" fact.

Andrew Solomon, and all the families, took their 'disability' with all the 'science' that was supposedly backing those diagnoses and started to shift the social/medical paradigm. Remarkable.

How do you film nostalgia?
11 May 2023
The picture is a paean to film and nostalgia and family - how we recreate the past in our memories and how we let the story and the memories shape who we are now. We tend to narrativize our past with simple memories but they don't always tell the entire picture. This movie tries to portray that bittersweet relationship we have with our parents, the two people from whom we get our personalities and our sense of who we are and make sense of the world. And only art can often do this complex relationship justice, but the beauty in this portrayal is that it's the very scientific aspect of film that the director got from his father combined with the artistic sensibility that the director got from his mother. It's not just a biography but a meditation on how we become who we are and how we tell that story, too.

Funny, heartwarming, beautiful
10 September 2022
I think these negative reviews are from the anti-"woke" crowd which is sad because this movie was very funny and the story was brilliant. The pacing was fast-moving, the story pushed along like a rocketship at warp speed. Fantastic, witty dialogue. Animation is beautiful and the art direction was spectacular. So much so I will go back to rewatch just for that. The voice-acting superb. Uzo Aduba and Taika Waititi, Chris Evans. The cat is a standout character in a canon of very memorable companion animals. My spouse, 15 year old son and I all enjoyed it heartily. We all loved it! I hope to see more films by this creative team in the future.

My Doma
29 June 2022
Spouse and I now refer to our house as our "doma" based on this show. Memorable characters, thrilling action, great acting, authentic setting, and a great story. We even refer to the show when discussing family ancestry from Canada and New York. I sure hope there's a season two in the works.

Serious themes
24 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Because I knew the story, I wasn't expecting a comedy. So, the comedic actors are actually pretty remarkable in this show that tries to present a tragic story in what starts out as a somewhat funny presentation. I think that is pretty brilliant and I'm all in. These are timely and important themes about family, mental health, and therapeutic relationships. While it is about one unscrupulous practitioner and one gullible customer, it does make one start to question the entire business of therapy.

Best thing I've seen all year
8 August 2021
The script is outstanding. Ethan Hawke, Daveed Diggs, and the young man who played Onion are stellar. The supporting ensemble cast is superb which feels like a gift to the audience. I hope Hawke is awarded and recognized for producing top-shelf projects. We so appreciate you out here in Middle America!

OK Film Critics
1 December 2019
I dare five, nay fifty, of these film critics to get together and create a film like this that they would deem worthy of 100%. It's delightful, well-acted, beautifully animated and directed. There's something about a Christmas movie that warms the heart and this one achieves that plus more.

So Much More
14 November 2019
So much more than a biopic, this film captures the artistry and poignancy of this great composer. The camp is so on point because Elton doesn't seem to take himself very seriously and the setting and costumes and art direction set the tone perfectly. Taron Egerton is brilliant for starters and Jamie Bell and the entire cast shimmer. Bravo Bravo

Three Generations Loved It
25 February 2019
We all really liked this film of the three generations of our family that saw it together. My son and I liked it the most and we listen and sing to the soundtrack on the weekends. He likes the wordplay and whimsy of the lyrics as well as the beautiful orchestral music. He plays piano and felt a renewed interest in making music and practicing after seeing this film which was Magical. The playful and joyful design mirrors the original film: costumes, sets, direction, and acting. I thought "The Place Where Lost Things Go" is a memorable song for a lifetime, as some of the original Mary Poppins score is. It was quite bold to do a sequel to Mary Poppins but Disney is really making their mark for the ages -- a lovely, happy, fun movie for children and families. The jaded reviews of adult film critics is also a zeitgeist of our age. I appreciate there are artists creating a new generation of film and music for our children.
