Gunmen: Mario Van Peebles fondly recalls working with Christopher Lambert on underrated 90s actioner
The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.
“Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is.

In deciding on our next Wtf celebrity to cover, we passed around several names but in the end we all decided that: There could be only One! Despite being basically blind, Christopher Lambert made a name for himself as the king of Sci-Fi action films. One could say he single-handedly kept Blockbuster Video in business as most of his output in the 90’s debuted on the bottom shelves of the video rental chain. But few performers have made their mark on the international stage like Christopher Lambert, alternating between North American schlock and more prestigious French fare. Despite most of us knowing Lambert mainly for two iconic roles, there is much more to know about this American-born French actor; it’s time we find out just Wtf Happened to Christopher Lambert.

Given their close-knit relationship as global entertainment industries, gaming and the movies have long had a symbiotic connection. Movie tie-in games, for instance, have been a popular feature in gaming for decades, with numerous short-form releases over the years attempting to distil linear, cinematic storylines into interactive ones — albeit with varying success.
A Brief History of Gaming and the Movies
Of course, it’s not been uncommon over the years for studios to churn out poor quality movie-tie in titles that barely represent the characters and narratives we’ve fallen for on the big screen. However, there have been some outright successes and unexpected releases in alternative gaming genres.
In addition to being video game franchises, movies have even inspired online casino games and plenty of other activities throughout the iGaming sector. IP such as King Kong, Jurassic Park and even The Lord of The Rings have all been transformed...

Younger comic-book fans might be surprised to learn that there was once a time when Marvel Comics was on its last legs and willing to do anything to keep the company afloat. Before underdog blockbusters like the X-Men and Blade films put Marvel heroes back on the map, they were desperately trying to experiment with their comics in order to attract a wider audience.
One such experiment was the Marvel Knights imprint, a collection of stand-alone stories that initially focused on less-marketable heroes and gave artists free-reign to tell unique and more adult-oriented stories unshackled by decades of garbled continuity issues. While these stories didn’t always succeed in revitalizing characters for a new generation (and often contained the worst kind of late-90s/early 2000s edge), they were almost always incredibly stylish and memorable.

Henry Cavill has a lot of upcoming projects, but the one film he is particularly excited about is the Highlander reboot. The actor is one of the most demanded stars in the film industry at present. His unfortunate exit from The Witcher has opened up his schedule, and he is making the most of it.
Cavill is passionate about his projects, and it translates onto the screen flawlessly. The British actor has been a part of several big franchises in his career to date, and he looks set to become the face of yet another one soon.

After many controversies surrounding the production of the upcoming Scream movie, tentatively titled Scream 7, the fans have finally gotten a break as legendary franchise veteran Neve Campbell officially confirmed her return as Neve Campbell. On top of that, the franchise’s original screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two and the fourth Scream movies, was confirmed as the director following Christopher Landon’s departure.
This piece of news comes after a series of controversies surrounding the production of the next installment in one of the most popular horror franchises in history. And while the producers were quick to greenlight the movie, problems began in November 2023 when the then-attached star Melissa Barrera posted some comments about the Israel-Hamas War in support of Palestinian relief, after which she was “quietly dropped” from the projects. A day later, Jenna Ortega, who was supposed to star and reprise her role from Scream VI,...

Lionsgate and John Wick aficionado Chad Stahelski are taking their working relationship to the next level after the stuntman-turned-premiere filmmaker inked a multi-year producing deal with the studio focusing on action films. Per today’s official press release, the announcement comes just weeks after Stahelski signed on to direct a reimagination of the Highlander franchise as his next feature film while assuming creative oversight of the Highlander and John Wick franchises across film, television, and all multimedia platforms. The director and his team at 87Eleven Entertainment have taken the helm in designing a comprehensive multiplatform content strategy for both franchises.
“Chad and his team at 8711 Entertainment are profoundly talented filmmakers and creative collaborators,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “They raise the bar of excellence on every project they take on, and we are looking to Chad to bring us the best new original action projects...

No one can deny that Ghost Rider, the 2007 big-screen adaptation with Nicolas Cage, was a terrible superhero movie. But, it’s nothing compared to the gonzo sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which was directed by the duo Neveldine/ Taylor, who you might remember best for the Crank films. This was their big stab at making a conventional, PG-13 big studio movie, but it misfired Badly, with the film earning an even worse critical reception than its predecessor and performing even worse at the box office. So what went wrong?
In this episode of Marvel Revisited, our host Kier Gomes tries to unpack what has to be one of the most eccentric superhero movies ever made. It was produced for only half what the first movie cost and it did a few things right, such as ditching the weird wig Cage wore as Johnny Blaze in the original film. But,...

Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.
But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

The tea leaves have aligned, and industry insider Daniel Richtman sees another casting for Lionsgate‘s Highlander reboot emerging from the pattern. According to Richtman, Michael Fassbender plays the villain in the Chad Stahelski-directed reimagining of the classic action film. According to Richtman, Fassbender is in talks to star alongside Henry Cavill as a “Mongol Warrior.”
Please remember that whispers about Michael Fassbender’s involvement with Highlander are rumors. We must wait for Lionsgate to make it official.
The new rumor already has Highlander fans buzzing about Fassbender playing a version of the original Highlander villain, the Kurgan. Portrayed by Clancy Brown in the 1986 fantasy action-adventure film, the Kurgan is an immortal warrior and thorn in the side of Connor MacLeod, the Highlander (Christopher Lambert).

Chad Stahelski is finally making his long-gestating Highlander movie. The director has been developing the project since 2016, and now has set it as his next film.
Henry Cavill is attached to star in Highlander, a reimagining of the 1986 film of the same name that starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortals who must battle to collect more power. Because as the movie’s tagline goes, “there can be only one” immortal left standing.
Highlander’s green light is part of a sweeping new deal Stahelski and Lionsgate announced Tuesday. The pact will give Stahelski oversight of two franchises: Highlander and John Wick, the latter of which has spanned four films directed by Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves. Those films, and Stahelksi’s stunt-focused 87Eleven Entertainment, have been praised for reinventing the action genre, with the latest installment standing as the series highest grossing with $440 million globally. When Connor MacLeod says “There Can Be Only One” in the original Highlander he had no idea he’d be repeating that line for years. Just when he thinks he has finally made it to be the only one, another immortal seems to pop up, challenging him for that title. How many “ones” can there be? It turns out a lot.
After the problems with making Highlander II and the anemic box office for it, it was decided to completely ignore everything surrounding that film and create a direct sequel to the original film. They dropped any mention of the planet Zeist, ignored that immortals are supposed to be aliens, and reverted the setting to seven years after the first film.
Even under the best of circumstances, films are hard to produce. How does one fare after completely rebooting the franchise? Surprisingly well. The creation of Highlander 3: The Final Dimension is far from perfect,...

Lately, we at JoBlo have been championing the collection of physical media in the face of certain movies that have been getting somewhat lost due to extremely limited availability. This is especially an issue for those who partake in a digital collection of movies, which has the potential of disappearing despite purchasing them. However, there are great distributors like Vinegar Syndrome and Arrow Video that have done a fantastic job remastering rare movies for Blu-ray releases. The Mvp Rewind Collection has recently announced that the Albert Pyun action-thriller, Mean Guns, starring Christopher Lambert, Ice-t, Michael Halsey, Deborah Van Valkenburgh and Tina Cote is set for a Blu-ray release on April 9.
The plot description, courtesy of Blu-ray.com, reads,
“The world’s most dangerous criminals are summoned to a new prison on the eve before its grand opening by Moon, the ruthless leader of the world’s most powerful crime syndicate.

Why do some of the best horror movies revolve around a holiday setting? Could the thought of having to be cooped up with our families send us into a monstrous rage? The late 20th century was a wild time to be a kid immersed in the world of pop culture. It was the period that produced Jessica Rabbit, a cartoon character you felt embarrassed to watch with your parents, and a time when stores regularly stocked movie tie-in toys linked to “kid-friendly” fare like Aliens and Terminator 2.
It seemed like nothing was off the table and that was certainly the case in the world of cartoons. Eager to cash in on the appeal of cinematic properties in a way that would give even the MCU pause for thought, a glut of animated shows inspired by movies featuring torture, nudity, beheadings, and buckets of toxic waste found their way onto the small screen. In most cases, the cartoons spawned rarely stuck around for long, but today they stand as examples of a weird and wonderful chapter in the history of small screen entertainment.

1990 was a peak year for Van Damage. The Muscles from Brussels was on the way to the big time after Bloodsport and Kickboxer (which made our list of the Best Fighting Movies) proved to be huge moneymakers at the box office. But, Jean-Claude Van Damme was different from some of his contemporaries because he was a hearthrob and a prime butt-kicker. His 1990 movie Lionheart was bought for distribution by Universal, paving the way to his breaking into mainstream studio work. But, before he could jump on that gravy train, he had one more movie left to make on his Cannon movie deal – but ironically, the company itself would not release the film theatrically due to its waning fortunes, with this being Van Damme’s first major studio release after MGM opted to distribute it. The movie? Death Warrant!

When the original Highlanderbecame a sleeper hit on home video it was only a matter of time before a sequel was made. Even though Connor had won the Gathering and had once again become mortal surely there was a way to get him to pick up the sword once again. Christopher Lambert was game to reprise the character again so why not move forward with another film?

One of the more iconic elements of “Highlander,” the high-concept fantasy adventure from 1986 that went on to spawn a long-running franchise, is the movie’s songs, written and performed by Queen. And Chad Stahelski, who will be directing the remake for Lionsgate, says that those songs will return for the new movie.
“Yes,” Stahelski told TheWrap while talking about the Oscar chances for “John Wick: Chapter 4.” “Probably in a different way than you think, but hardcore yes.”
Queen wrote and recorded songs for the original “Highlander” and released an album, “A Kind of Magic,” in 1986 that served as an official soundtrack to the movie.

The original ‘Highlander,’ which graced the silver screen back in 1986, featured the likes of Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown, and Sean Connery. It was announced back in 2021 that Henry Cavill (“The Witcher”) was in talks to star in a Highlander reboot from director Chad Stahelski (John Wick), but it’s now been two years since we’ve heard a peep about the project. That long period of silence has been shattered, however, as Deadline reports that Lionsgate is bringing the project to the American Film Market.
Deadline details, “For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot. We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords.”
“The team is eyeing a 2024 start,” Deadline also notes in their report.
Mike Finch wrote the current draft of the Highlander reboot screenplay.
The original movie, directed by Russell Mulcahy, was released in 1986. Christopher Lambert starred as Connor MacLeod, “an immortal Scottish...

Exclusive: In the world of Highlander reboots, there can still only be one…and it’s a good one at that.
For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot which has Henry Cavill aboard to star as the eponymous Scottish swordsman and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski set to direct.
We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords. The team is eyeing a 2024 start.
This will be welcome news for AFM buyers whose pool of pre-sale projects has been diminished by the ongoing strike.
The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline...

If Hollywood insists on revisiting this classic, don’t let it be a sleek, polished piece that takes itself seriously. Fans will want it to retain the hammy, cheesy silliness of the 1986 original
Highlander is one of those movies that feels like it could only have been made in the 80s or early 90s. It’s not quite esoteric enough to be a 70s fantasy flick, and it lacks the polish and accompanying vapidity that tarnished so many Hollywood efforts in later decades.
It is memorable these days mainly for Christopher Lambert’s comical attempt at a Scottish accent as antihero Connor MacLeod, not to mention Sean Connery’s complete failure to even attempt pulling off a Spanish one as fellow immortal Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez. And of course there is Clancy Brown’s irresistibly gothic performance as baddie the Kurgan, a brutal behemoth who somehow appears to be at least 9ft tall on screen,...

‘Highlander’ director Chad Stahelski says the reboot of the fantasy film starring Henry Cavill will feel like a prequel to the original movie. The 1986 classic, starring Christopher Lambert as immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod, quickly became a fan favourite franchise and stretched across five films, two TV series – and an anime film. It's now set for a reboot with 'Superman' actor Henry Cavil set to star as the Scottish warrior, who battles other immortals to be ‘the one’ survivor with the superpower to live forever.'John Wick' director Chad, who was enlisted to take over the project in 2016, hinted his approach would be to launch a series of movies and not just the one. Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, the filmmaker said: “I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline 'There can only be one,' you can...

Chad Stahelski's 'Highlander' reboot could mark the beginning of a franchise. The 'John Wick' director is set to helm a remake of the classic 1986 fantasy movie – with Henry Cavill attached to star in the lead role – and suggested that it could act as a prequel with further flicks to follow.Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Chad said: "I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline, 'There can only be one', you can't just kill everybody the first time."The 54-year-old filmmaker continued: "I'll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we've also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we're trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to 'The Gathering', so we have room to grow the property.

Hugh Hudson, who came from the worlds of documentaries and advertising to make his feature directing debut on the stirring Oscar best picture winner Chariots of Fire, one of the most admired British films ever made, has died. He was 86.
Hudson died Friday at Charing Cross hospital in London after a short illness, his family told The Guardian newspaper.
Hudson helmed just seven features during his career. After earning an Oscar nomination for his 1981 masterpiece, he followed with the highly regarded Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984). Starring Christopher Lambert, it was the first Tarzan feature to receive an Oscar nom (it landed three).
Up next for Hudson, however, was Revolution (1985), which starred Al Pacino as a fur trapper thrust into the American Revolutionary War. Made for a reported 28 million, it was a major bust, grossing just 350,000 in the U.S. Critics hammered Pacino, who left acting for about four years,...

Hugh Hudson, who directed the classic Oscar winning film “Chariots of Fire,” died Friday in London. He was 86.
The Guardian said he had died after a short illness. His family released a statement saying, “Hugh Hudson, 86, beloved husband and father, died at Charing Cross hospital on 10 February after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Maryam, his son Thomas and his first wife Sue.”
As a director Hudson could be counted upon to deliver lush, beautifully designed, well-orchestrated scenes.
“Chariots of Fire” was the story of the rivalry between two British runners, one Jewish, the other a devout Christian, culminating in the 1924 Olympics. Hudson was Oscar nominated for best director in 1982, and the movie won four Academy Awards, including best picture and best score for the electronic compositions of Vangelis that somehow worked splendidly in the period film.

Ray Stevenson's a busy man. Coming off of his head-turning role in cinephile sensation flick "Rrr," the man has also booked himself a role as a "Star Wars" bad guy in the upcoming "Ahsoka" Disney+ series. Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, he has replaced the extremely problematic Kevin Spacey in the historical action flick "1242: Gateway to the West" playing the lead role in the film about a Hungarian Priest who stands up against the Mongol army.
Also starring in the movie are Eric Roberts ("The Dark Knight"), Michael Ironside ("Starship Troopers"), Bold Choimbol ("Bogd Khaan"), David Schofield ("Gladiator"), and Christopher Lambert ("Highlander"). The film is currently in production under the direction of Peter Soos and is expected to be shopped around to distributors around the end of the year.

Thor and Rrr star Ray Stevenson has nabbed the lead role in 1242: Gateway to the West after Kevin Spacey exited the historical Genghis Khan drama last year amid sexual assault charges in the U.K.
Carlos Alperin of Galloping Entertainment, who will continue selling the global rights to the film at the European Film Market in Berlin, confirmed Stevenson’s casting to The Hollywood Reporter. Directed by Péter Soós, the 1242 cast also includes Eric Roberts, Christopher Lambert, Neil Stuke and Genevieve Florence.
“The film is looking simply Epic and will be very well positioned due to Ray Stevenson’s amazing role in Rrr, as well as the political background of the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Alperin told THR in a statement.
Historically, the Mongols invaded both Ukraine and Russia, as well as Poland, before they marched into Hungary in 1242. Alperin added that 1242 has been shooting in Hungary for...

Pulp Fiction
"Reservoir Dogs" may be Quentin Tarantino's debut feature, but "Pulp Fiction" is the movie that put him on the map. It cannot be understated how big this movie was, and how it changed the landscape of film — resulting in a bunch of crummy imitators that tried to recreate Tarantino's "hip" dialogue to no avail. The fractured narrative focuses on several different criminals operating in Los Angeles, and the stories collide and crossover in unexpected ways.

Albert Pyun was a beloved B-movie filmmaker who brought audiences a total of 52 films as a director and who recently passed away leaving two upcoming films seemingly unfinished. Looking at his career, the man knew how to create interesting and entertaining films to say the least. His first release was the 1982 film The Sword and the Sorcerer and his newest was the 2018 film Death Heads: Brain Dead. The man seemed unstoppable, and he will be very missed. To celebrate the man and his work, here are 5 of our favorite films from the Pyuniverse.

Over the last forty years, director Albert Pyun has built an awesome career. He started off with the appropriately titled sword and sorcery classic The Sword and the Sorcerer and since then has directed such films as Cyborg, Captain America (1990), Kickboxer 2, Kickboxer 4, Arcade, Nemesis, Dollman, Mean Gun, Infection, and many more. So many more, he has around fifty feature directing credits to his name. Sadly, Pyun was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years ago… and it seems he is now in his final days. His wife Cynthia Curnan took to Facebook to ask fans to send in personal messages so she can read them to him. Curnan’s request for messages was then given a signal boost by a Sam Peckinpah fan page.
Curnan’s Facebook post can be found Here. She said, “Albert took another downturn. I could tell he feared going down again. He was working too feverishly.

With the popularity of nostalgia-driven shows like "Stranger Things," interest in '80s pop culture always seems to be taking new and exciting directions. One such example is the fascination with the classic movies of the decade. Sure, everyone knows about the heavy hitters like "Back to the Future," " E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "The Terminator," and "The Breakfast Club." Yet, there are many other films from the 1980s that need respect, and that's what this list is about.
Here, we'll look at the movies of the '80s that deserve some love and devotion. These movies should become references in TV shows, have cosplays made of them, or at least be included in your next '80s movie marathon. So make sure to grab your favorite scrunchie, a bowl of popcorn, and a can of Tab (or whatever soda you can safely drink), so we can totally explore some fantastic...
