Fockers who? Meet “The Zweiflers” instead: Brand new winners of Canneseries.
Created and showrun by David Hadda, the show picked up multiple awards at the French TV fest on Wednesday, including best series and music. Selected as a Variety Hot Pick earlier this month, “it’s destined to be billed as a Jewish ‘Succession’ set in contemporary Germany, with all the baggage that can bring to the table, Variety wrote.
That being said, its creator had another dysfunctional family on his mind.
“My biggest influence was ‘The Sopranos’ and I always said I wanted to do a Jewish ‘Sopranos’! The idea was to change the narrative from the victims’ perspective in Germany to a Jewish patriarch and Holocaust survivor who had lost everything – and everyone, and then came back to rebuild his life. That was empowering for me,” said Hadda.

The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl has reflected on how her Danish breakout series redefined “national and linguistic borders” when it came to TV viewing.
Gråbøl spoke with Deadline in the midst of her time leading the Canneseries jury, for which she is judging shows from the likes of China, Brazil and Sweden.
The Killing, which was a smash hit both locally in Denmark and around the world, airing for three seasons between 2007 and 2012 and spawning a U.S. remake, “was a defining moment and a visceral way of showing how TV series can be accessible for all of us,” she said.
“It was something we couldn’t imagine [at the time],” added Gråbøl. “That something so local from this small country could have such interest across the border. We had been so used to importing culture from other countries but suddenly those national and linguistic borders weren’t defined anymore.”

Furie is a French and Belgium feature. This title looks at a family, returning from a holiday. Unfortunately, squatters have take over their home. Furie, also known as Get In or Die Trying (Uhm), has had a run on the film festival circuit, in 2019. Supposedly based on a true story, this feature has begun a home entertainment release in Europe. Directed by Olivier Abbou, this film centrally stars: Adama Niane (Baise-moi), Stéphane Caillard (The Take) and Paul Hamy. A trailer for the film was released in 2019 (found below) and new stills are available here, as well. The trailer is exclusively in French, with French subtitles. Some of the dialogue mentions: "no response on the phone," "squatters," "missing children" and a "plan." This Canadian's French could still use some improvement. However, the trailer does show one family struggling with a difficult situation, while terrorized by a group intent on class warfare.

Right off the bat I will say that Territories is a challenging film, both in its message and execution. This is what I would call a political horror film, and it really does deliver with both things. I went into this film without any real prior knowledge. I had no expectations and I didn’t know what to expect. This is one of those films that I think benefits from that, so I will keep this review as vague as possible on the plot points.
The beginning scene of Territories is intense and it will keep your heart pounding. It starts off with Dirge by Death In Vegas playing and we see a group of people driving in their car. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with them, they look like a normal bunch of people. As this happens you begin to question...

Director Olivier Abbou has delivered a shocker with his first feature film Territories. Shot in Montreal, QC. this title is also know as Territoires and sometimes even as Checkpoint. Territories has been released in the United Kingdom as of September 12th on DVD and this reviewer hopes that the film finds a wider audience in North America - the territory that is the focus of the film. In Abbou's political and horrifying thriller five youths are dressed up in orange jumpsuits to represent those confined, tortured and likely killed in Guantanamo Bay. This is a dark look at an even darker part of humanity and the visuals are not often pretty.
Several friends drive back to Portland after enjoying a friend's Bar Mitzvah. They are stopped by what appears to be two American customs officers. Then, the nightmare of all custom stops begins with rape,...

28Dla is getting to the party a little bit fashionably late on this horror story, but the first trailer for Territoires, or Checkpoint, is relevant for pointing out the current troubles at the Us-Canada border. Although, most Canadian border crossers do not experience torture, as suggested by the clip, there have been some stories of Canadians being held in detention for hours on end. Director Olivier Abbou smartly points out some of the current political tensions between these two nations and horror fans should look for Abbou's message in this first trailer for Territoires.
The synopsis for Territoires is here:
"Five friends returning from a marriage in Canada return home to the United States. Not far from the border, two customs officers stop them to check their identity. Suspicious, they take their time especially with Jalil, a man of Arab origin. The situation worsens when a customs officer finds a...

Here is the poster, official international trailer and some stills from Olivier Abbou's thriller Territories.
The film is from the the producers of The Horde. It arrives in French theaters in June, but does not have an official U.S. release.
Synopsis:
"Canada, near the Us border. Jalil, Michelle, Gab, Leslie and Tom are driving back home after a wedding. A car blocks the road. Forces them to stop. It's the border police. The officers check their ID. They seem suspicious. Their questioning slowly intensifies. In particular, the origins of Jalil seem to intrigue the officers. Bother them. As good citizens, the group stays calm. After all, they've done nothing wrong... Except that broken light... Except that pot found in the car... Tension rises. Leslie tries to get Tom's medication in the car. But the officers prevent her. The police check turns nasty. The group is cuffed. Leslie protests; as an answer,...

In French cinemas this coming June is Olivier Abbou's Territories, a thriller we've been covering for nearly two years now. Inside you'll find the official foreign trailer, alongside over 20 hi-res stills and the poster. Still no word on a U.S. release. "Canada, near the Us border. The Canadian shot Territories is developing nicely with a handful of torturous stills. Picturing a border crossing gone bad, five friends find themselves in a Guantanamo type situation, where some overzealous customs officers take them to task. You can see how events play out in a second still of Territories below, courtesy of Upcoming Horror Movies.
The synopsis for Territories is here:
"Five friends returning from a marriage in Canada return home to the United States. Not far from the border, two customs officers stop them to check their identity. Suspicious, they take their time especially with Jalil, a man of Arab origin. The situation worsens when a customs officer finds a small bag of marijuana in the luggage.
Then things degenerate rapidly: a customs officer grabs the little dog that's part of the group and slits open its belly to be sure it's not a mule. When Gab makes a move,...

While Hobo With A Shotgun blasts its way through the North American cinema scene, another genre film sporting cinematography by Canadian filmmaker Karim Hussain, Olivier Abbou’s Territories, has been making the international festival rounds, with its next stop the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival this weekend. Fango spoke with Hussain about this political horror movie, which he calls “basically a weird joke on Guantanamo Bay.”...

More horror goodness coming out of the land of love and fine wine (which sort of makes up for the chicks who don't use deordorant or shave under their arms). Know your boundaries and get ready for your first look at Territories.
The film is directed by Olivier Abbou and produced by the same loonies who brought us The Horde. Check out the images and the plot crunch below.

About two months ago I had the chance to sit down for a drink with Fantasia cohort and talented cinematographer Karim Hussein. He was here in town doing some camera tests before heading off to shoot Jason Eisener's Hobo With A Shotgun and while we certainly chatted about that for a little bit Hussein was every bit as excited about a project he had recently completed, that being Olivier Abbou's Territories.
Backed by France's Snd, Abbou's film is a sort of backwoods survival horror sure to provoke controversy in the Us, particularly in the Red states. Why? Because Abbou pointedly and specifically uses the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay as his central image. The story revolves around a pair of American men who set up a makeshift - and completely unauthorized - customs check point on a remote road crossing the Canada-us border. They're good patriots, they think,...

Sure it was produced by Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens, but the French zombie flick The Horde is absolutely terrible. With that said, maybe the company behind it learned a lesson? Bloody Disgusting exclusively learned that next up on their slate is Territories, which is to be directed by Olivier Abbou from a screenplay by Thibault Lang-Willara. Canada, near the Us border.
