Aliens In The Attic (Blu-ray)
Directed by: John Schultz
Cast: Carter Jenkins, Austin Robert Butler, Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Kevin Nealon, Doris Roberts, Andy Richter
Running Time: 1 hr 28 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: November 3, 2009
Plot: A quartet of heavily-armed extra-terrestrials come to Earth to retrieve a previously abandoned doomsday machine. Who can stop them? Kids!
Who’s It For? This is the fluffiest and family-friendliest presentation of a possible alien takeover in eons. The tiny green aliens are scary more than ugly, and the overall violence in the film is for the most part slapstick. My dog would probably scamper down to the basement after a couple of loud crashes, but she has always been a wuss.
Movie:
Aliens In The Attic is a movie of shenanigans from start to finish. Before the title becomes relevant, the kids are partaking in rebellious activity, like giving the online school grades the ol’ two letter grade bump,...

Dragonball: Evolution
Directed by: James Wong
Cast: Justin Chatwin, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung and Chow Yun-Fat
Running Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Rating: PG
Plot: A young man (Chatwin) trained in super martial arts must stop an ancient evil force from ending the world.
Who’s It For? Tweenage boys and their complacent chaperones/parents. Fans of the series will likely be disappointed, especially those who watched “Dragonball Z” on TV like this guy.
Movie:
As far as adaptations that should never exist in the first place go, there have been worse. Like the best of the worst, Dragonball: Evolution was never really asked for by fans. In fact, the film is being rejected more than accepted by fans. And even more fans are too busy disregarding its entire existence to even reject it. But still, this is no super disaster like that Super Mario Bros. movie with Bob Hoskins...

I’m going to judge Dragonball Evolution not as an adaptation, but solely as a film. And, as a film – as a work of cinema – Dragonball Evolution succeeds. To be more specific, it succeeds in entertaining kids. If I were 10 years old, I’d surely marvel at the swirling blue and red auras and the Matrix moves. The bullet time is executed no better than most of the other films it’s been featured in for the last ten years, but I suppose if you were born the year after The Matrix came out, this might be a new experience for you. In any case, I’ll bet you can guess where I’m gonna take the review from here.
My greatest criticism of Dragonball Evolution is one that’s really unfortunate to see nowadays. With all the CGI action going on, it seems less emphasis was put on making...

When I began contributing to Dread Central, I was eager to reminisce about the never to be forgotten, Forrest J Ackerman and his astounding legacy. But who has time to look backwards when Ack keeps going “forry-ward” in the here and now? Case in point? In a matter of weeks Profiles In History will hold the greatest genre auction in history, offering prized objects from the collection of the Grand-daddy of all collectors. Gosh! Wow! (Dang)! It’s the Forrest J Ackerman Estate Auction!
Over the years, hardcore collectors have snatched up every existing morsel, crumb and Blob of memorabilia associated with our classic genre heritage. Sure, there’s no shortage of Terrorific collectibles in the form of model kits, prop-copies and photos. But just try and find anything “original” from the golden, silver or, hell - even aluminum-foil era of Imagi-movies? Try finding it for less than a Kong’s ransom!

Toronto -- Canadian unions and guilds criticized Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday for calling on publicly funded producers to operate more closely to market principles.
Harper, campaigning for re-election ahead of an Oct. 14 national election, told the Globe and Mail newspaper that public subsidies should not go to cultural product that fails to connect with audiences.
Stephen Waddell, national executive director of Canadian actors union Actra, argues that, while market forces matter in the making of cultural product, they should not entirely shape it.
"It's important, sure, that product find an audience and have an audience. But that shouldn't be the only criteria," Waddell said. "There is cultural product that may not have a mass appeal, but is important to produce."
The federal government came under fire in August for imposing $45 million in cuts to film and TV groups, including the Canadian Film Center and the Banff World Television Festival.
