Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Anchor Bay Entertainment was a major player in the horror world, giving DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more. Then things changed, and eventually Anchor Bay got folded into Lionsgate Home Entertainment… but now Deadline reports that the Anchor Bay Entertainment label is being revived, and the revival is starting off with the releases of puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen!
Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are behind the return of Anchor Bay Entertainment, and they’re planning to use the label to bring the world “genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics,...

A familiar label for horror fans is getting a resurrection. Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new iteration of Anchor Bay Entertainment with the goal to curate a new library of films for distribution, projects that range from new release genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
The new launch comes with a pair of acquisition titles: puppet horror film Abruptio and documentary Dinner with Leatherface.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck in a press release statement. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.
Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

Written and directed by Raimi, the original The Evil Dead has the following synopsis: Ash, his girlfriend Linda, his sister Cheryl, and couple Scotty and Shelly, drive to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. While there, they find the Naturom Demonto / Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (aka “The Book of the Dead”), an ancient tome whose text reawakens the dead when read out loud. After unintentionally releasing a flood of evil, the five friends must fight for their lives or become possessed.

There’s a kind of shaggy glory to Evil Dead: Sam Raimi’s demonic scary movie series spawned from the writer/director’s triumphant indie horror marvel from 1981. Starring childhood friend Bruce Campbell and shot in the Tennessee wilderness with next to no budget, the inaugural outing with Raimi’s Necronomicon (aka Book of the Dead) and its flesh-ripping Deadites — also known by the original film’s title, “The Evil Dead” — established a formula for four more films with immeasurable influence on skin-peeling, tendon-snapping, chainsaw-revving pop culture as we know it.
The first film sees final guy Ash Williams (Campbell), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), and friends Scott (Richard DeManincor) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) heading out for a stay at a remote cabin. Once there, a cursed book and tape summons a demonic presence that slowly begins to feast on the souls of the unlucky travelers one by one.

Ten years ago, the characters in Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead were cleverly given first names that allowed the first letters of each of their names to spell out Demon – David, Eric, Mia, Olivia, Natalie – and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise has similarly hidden some Easter Eggs within the characters’ names. Every character in the new movie is named after a past Evil Dead star!
Here’s the full main character roster, and the stars their names pay tribute to…
Actor/Character: Lily Sullivan – Beth

The Deadites are set to return to theaters this weekend with director Lee Cronin's gloriously unhinged "Evil Dead Rise." Visionary director Sam Raimi's twisted version of the undead bowled over unsuspecting audiences when the original "The Evil Dead" hit in 1981, ushering in a new wave of blood-soaked mayhem and low-budget terror. When Raimi first cracked open the pages of The Necronomicon (a.k.a. the Book of the Dead) in that first film, the overall tone and texture of his breakthrough debut was decidedly darker and grittier than the films that followed. When five innocent college kids accidentally unleash Hell itself at a remote cabin in the woods, the dark spirits found in "The Evil Dead" are only concerned with wreaking as much havoc as possible. If you're Ash (Bruce Campbell), the reality of watching your girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker) and your buddies transform into possessed soul eaters...

There’s no franchise like the Evil Dead franchise. Four quality entries that each, in their own way, have managed to push the boundaries of originality, black comedy, fear and fun. Not to mention buckets, troths and otherwise gnarly amounts of blood and gore. That’s the Evil Dead Way, after all.

The Evil Dead franchise has long been a female-forward horror franchise, even with Bruce Campbell typically leading the charge. Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly from Sam Raimi’s original The Evil Dead have been collectively dubbed “The Ladies of The Evil Dead,” and 2013’s remake of course gave us a new franchise icon in Jane Levy’s Mia.
This year’s new movie Evil Dead Rise brings Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan into the mix as the latest ladies of The Evil Dead, and Sutherland just shared a pretty awesome photo over on Twitter this past weekend. Though moviegoers and filmmakers alike may sometimes think of Hollywood as a purveyor of art and entertainment, the industry is, above all, a business. This means that the bottom line is of the utmost importance to studio executives, which, unfortunately, sometimes leads to decisions that don't produce a favorable outcome for viewers. Case in point: movie sequels. When a film is a hit, producers start itching to replicate its success, and sequels are seen as the best way to do that. However, not all follow-ups are made equal, and things sometimes get left behind in the rush to generate another box office smash.
Strict continuity isn't necessarily the most vital element in making a great sequel, but a little cohesion doesn't hurt. The examples we've compiled below are sequels that completely ignore the previous installment(s) in the series, much to the consternation of dedicated fans. In some cases, re-writing...

A brand new scripted audio series that just launched this year, NPRmageddon is “what National Public Radio will sound like after the apocalypse,” the team explains.
NPRmageddon is a ten-part post-apocalyptic sci-fi arthouse radio show audio drama adjective-rich podcast in the style of public radio, broadcast from the United States of “Lost” Angeles.
Creators Bryan Keithley and Peter Podgursky tell Save the Cat, “We based our storytelling on how modern media operates and what National Public Radio sounds like now.
“Our approach with NPRmageddon was to give our listeners the good stuff—to lean on one-off stories heavy on science fiction and horror tropes, but to push those tropes through the lens of public media journalism. Step through a typical episode of NPRmageddon, and you’ll find a delicious selection of news-y mayhem worthy of any headline-grabbing lineup from the real world—from marauding mutants to rogue AI’s to parasitic pulsating brains.

(For the 30th anniversary of Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness," we're looking back at some scary and funny anecdotes about the movie this week).
Both "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness" open with recaps, explaining the story of Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) up to where the previous film left off. This is a necessity since both "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead II" end with cliffhangers; in the first, Ash is ambushed by an Unseen Force, while in the second he's sent back to medieval times. This mandated an explanation in each subsequent movie for viewers unacquainted with the series. But there's a catch to this: The story is never quite the same in any of the three films.
"Evil Dead II" opens with a reshot version of the first film, one that condenses its beats into 10 minutes: Ash goes out to a cabin in the woods, awakens...

Just last month, Evil Dead: The Game was updated to add the characters of Mia and David Allen from the 2013 Evil Dead movie. This month, it’s going to receiving the “Hail to the King” update – and it’s quite appropriate that the update is named after a line from Army of Darkness, because it involves the addition of an Army of Darkness-inspired single player mission and a character from Army of Darkness!
The new single player mission has the following description: “Castle Kandar’s Witch has opened a rift in time and space. Henry the Red must put her to the sword to save mankind.“
The Army of Darkness character who is being added to the game is The Blacksmith. In the film, the Blacksmith was played by Timothy Patrick Quill, who unfortunately passed away last year at the age of 63. It’s a nice tribute to Quill that...

Mr & Mrs Charlie Wilson, the suddenly precarious couple at the heart of "Chains"
The work of British playwright Elizabeth Baker (1876-1962) has never been adapted to the cinema but not for lack of worthiness. Her most famous play, "Chains", is currently enjoying a revival Off Broadway. DiggerFilms has debuted an official trailer for the documentary film Hail to the Deadites, another doc film about (horror) movie fans and their love for a particular franchise. From filmmaker Steve Villeneuve, Hail to the Deadites is a documentary about the fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films and explores the classic franchise's undying and ever-growing popularity. Beside meeting with fans around the world, the 80 minutes documentary feature interviews with Evil Dead franchise cast members such as Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Tom Sullivan, Dan Hicks, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Sarah Berry, Rick Domeier & Bill Moseley. Evil Dead first opened in 1981, followed by the sequel / remake Evil Dead II in 1987, finishing the trilogy with Army of Darkness in 1992. In my previous Fantasia review for Clapboard Jungle, I discussed how I’m pretty much an easy mark for any and all genre-related documentaries. After seeing Hail to the Deadites though, I feel like I need to amend that statement a bit as I’ve come to realize that, while I adore documentaries as a whole, fan documentaries aren’t exactly my cup of tea. I was hoping that Hail to the Deadites might turn me around when it comes to my feelings on fan docs as a whole, but rather, it ended up just leaving me feeling a bit blasé about the whole thing in the end.
For Hail to the Deadites, filmmaker Steve Villeneuve explores the fandom surrounding the Evil Dead franchise by collecting interviews with the folks involved with the films as well as a handful of fans from across the globe. Genre geeks will undoubtedly be...

There are horror franchises out there that are so beloved and have such a devoted and undyingly-passionate fanbase that they become legendary. The Evil Dead films are an example of this, their popularity still reaching incredible heights today. This documentary, directed by Steve Villeneive (Under the Scares) looks at those aforementioned fans and the admiration they have and the importance they hold towards the films themselves.
I am personally a big fan of the Evil Dead franchise, including the most recent 2013 entry, the first three classics, and the television show, Ash vs Evil Dead. I was impressed with this film which, like most well-done and entertaining docs about horror franchises, interviews a multitude of folk, from the cast and crew of the films themselves,...

We chat with Ellen Sandweiss, who played Ash Williams' damned sister in The Evil Dead, about a horror legacy nearly 40 years on.
Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise seems to have had at least nine bloody lives. First was the original 1981 movie that propelled lead actor Bruce Campbell and director Sam Raimi to cult cinema stardom, and then there were the sequels (The Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness), the 2013 remake, and even a cable TV show via Ash vs Evil Dead. These low budget efforts, originally labeled as “video nasties” in the UK, became a refuge for film aficionados to revel in macabre humor, bad puns, and practical disembowelment effects that rivaled Tom Savini’s best work.
Less lauded though is the coven of women in the original feature that Campbell’s Ash battles to the death and beyond. In The Evil Dead,...

With Halloween fast approaching, this writer wanted to unpack one of his all-time favorite horror movies, Evil Dead II (a.k.a. Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn). The first time I beheld the original The Evil Dead (1981), I found myself utterly terrified by the movie’s grisly carnage, completely charmed by its obvious low-fi origins, and wholly bewildered by a sense of humor that can only be described as “Three Stooges-esque.” The fact that it was made by a bunch of college dropouts from the suburbs of Michigan, through money raised largely from suburban dentists and grocers, only made its achievement all the more impressive. The movie’s charmingly crude special effects and daringly acrobatic camerawork only served to enhance its freshness, positioning it as a raw, gritty antidote to that era’s glossier, tamer studio horror fare.

Taking on a classic is a gutsy move, even for an award-winning filmmaker. And when director Kimberly Peirce signed on to re-imagine Stephen King's horror classic "Carrie," about a teenage girl with telekinetic powers hellbent on revenge, she knew she had some sky-high expectations to meet.
"I'd make a joke and say, 'I didn't give a f*ck,' but of course I felt pressure!" she told us recently while doing press for "Carrie." "But I think pressure is good."
All that pressure had Peirce thinking long and hard about what it would mean to sign on to a project of this scale, with its history and existing fan base. Having made just one film, 2008's "Stop-Loss," since her 1999 directorial debut, "Boys Don't Cry," it's clear, as a filmmaker, she doesn't make decisions lightly.
"I walked into this feeling a huge responsibility, much like I did with 'Boys Don't Cry...

Remake of Raimi's early '80s cult classic (and minor box-office performer) to easily surpass Jurassic Park 3D rerelease to land at the top of the domestic chart This past weekend, the no. 1 release at the Us/Canada -- actually, around the world -- box office was the widely panned 3D-converted sequel of a widely panned flick based on a toy. This weekend (April 6-8), in addition to the 3D toy-movie sequel mentioned above, two of the other top four movies on the domestic b.o. chart will be the remake of a bloody cult classic and the 3D-converted relaunch of a 1993 horror blockbuster. As the old saying goes, moviegoers are eager, thirsty, yearning for fresh, original content.
