Protesters attempted to shame journalists and politicos heading to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday into skipping the event in solidarity with the many journalists who have lost their lives in Gaza since Israel began its war on the territory.
For some attendees, the protests on the way in may have been the only time they heard about those journalists killed in Gaza — unless they were listening very closely. The slain journalists in Gaza were mentioned one time on stage, according to transcripts of the event, when NBC News...

The annual White House Correspondents Dinner may be dubbed the inside-the-beltway “Nerd Prom” in some circles. Still, this year’s soirée, which took place on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, was the hottest ticket in the nation’s capital — maybe the entire nation — as President Joe Biden and the First Lady sat alongside the Hollywood elite and senior government officials mingled with actors, rappers and rockers.
They were all gathered to toast free speech and watch the president and Saturday Night Live Colin Jost roast Donald Trump, the state of the media, and in a common theme of the night, the commander-in-chief’s age.
Before the event began, hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the Hilton in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington to confront attendees and encourage journalists to boycott the event. The demonstrators shouted about the deaths of journalists in Gaza as they covered the ongoing conflict...

Colin Jost, the featured entertainer at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, went all in on Donald Trump and his legal troubles, got in a few zingers about Joe Biden’s age and finished his gig by telling a long story of how the president is a “decent” man.
Some of Jost’s jokes didn’t land in the room, but he did well when he framed the 2024 election race.
“Let me see if I can summarize where this race stands at this moment,” Jost said. “The Republican candidate for president owe s half a billion in fines for bank fraud and is currently spending his days farting himself awake during a porn star hush money trial and the race is tied?!”
“The race is tied. Nothing makes sense anymore. The candidate who is a New York City playboy took abortion rights away, and the guy who is...

Joe Biden got in a few zingers at his rival Donald Trump, but he devoted a large part of his remarks to the serious threat to democracy.
“Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it stormy weather,” Biden quipped, referencing Trump’s current hush money trial.
The president also riffed on reports that Trump dozed off during his trial, calling him “sleepy Don.”
“Trump’s speech was so embarrassing, the statue of Robert E. Lee surrendered again,” he said.
The president, though, devoted a large chunk to his speech to warning of the threat to the democracy and the press’s role in a free society.

Hollywood stars, journalists and prominent politicians were met with a crowd of protesters of the Israel-Hamas war outside Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner.
There has been growing public discord over the war and President Joe Biden’s handling of the conflict, as well as mainstream media’s coverage of it.
This year’s event at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. — where the dinner has been held for decades — is headlined by Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, with several stars also in attendance, including Chris Pine, Molly Ringwald, Questlove and Rachel Brosnahan. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are also at the dinner.
However, attendees were greeted by demonstrators holding banners and chanting “Free, free Palestine” and calls for a “ceasefire” as they arrived, according to videos posted on social media. At one point, protesters also dropped a Palestinian flag out of one of the Washington Hilton’s windows.

Washington — “You look beautiful in your blood-stained gown,” a protester shouted at a finely dressed woman, opulent in heels and done up to perfection as she made her way to the Washington Hilton, the site of this year’s annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday, April 27.

Confusion and anxiety reigned at a CBS-Politico joint party today ahead of the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with staffers shocked at news that Bob Bakish, CEO of parent Paramount Global, is set to exit abruptly as early as Monday morning.
There have been rumblings about Bakish for days as the company enters the final stretch of exclusive merger negotiations with David Ellison’s Skydance. But his imminent departure triggered a wave of anxious speculation tonight in Washington, D.C. Ellison has always been mostly interested in the movie studio and historic lot. Although it seems Skydance does plan to keep the company intact, at least for a time, network folks aren’t betting on it and felt uncertain about the future of CBS, and about who might be running Paramount Global in a few short days — a troika of top execs, a new chief executive?

“Saturday Night Live” comedian Colin Jost delivered a mixed bag of Trump zingers, media jokes and Biden age wisecracks in front of a demanding crowd Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, but it took him until the last of his remarks to fully charm the assemblage of journalists and politicos who came to hear him roast the President and the Washington press corps.
Jost finished his remarks by telling President Joe Biden about his 95-year-old grandfather, a longtime fireman in Staten Island, N.Y, who voted Democrat in the 2020 presidential election even though that borough of New York City is known to favor Republicans.
“He voted for you, and the reason that he voted for you is because you’re a decent man,” Jost told Biden. “My grandpa voted for decency and decency is why we’re all here tonight.

President Joe Biden mocked Donald Trump for suggesting Americans inject themselves with bleach during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“And remember when he was trying to deal with [Covid-19]?” Biden asked during the 2024 North America’s Building Trades Unions conference. “He said just inject a little bleach in your veins. He missed—it all went to his hair.”
“Look, I shouldn’t have said that,” he added. “I probably shouldn’t have said that. You guys are a bad influence on me.”
But the mockery didn’t end there. “Don’t inject bleach,” the president stated in X’s post after the speech. “And don’t vote for the guy who told you to inject bleach.”

President Joe Biden revealed his willingness to debate with Donald Trump in a recent interview with radio host Howard Stern.
Although he did not provide a specific timeline for the potential debate, it marks the first time in this election cycle that Biden indicated his openness to such an event. When asked about debating his 2024 opponent, Biden responded, “I am somewhere… I’m happy to debate him.”
Following this remark on Stern’s Sirius/Xm show, Trump’s campaign manager, Chris Lacivita, responded on social media, “Ok, let’s set it up!”
While Trump chose not to participate in any of the four Republican National Committee-sanctioned primary election debates in 2024 and withdrew from one of the three debates with Biden in 2020, he has advocated for Biden’s involvement in the three general debates scheduled for this autumn.
However, the Biden campaign has raised concerns regarding the organization of these debates...

At least one televised presidential debate might happen this election year after all.
President Joe Biden told radio host Howard Stern on Friday he’d be “happy to” debate former president Donald Trump.
“I am somewhere,” Biden replied when asked if he would debate Trump during this election cycle. “I don’t know when. I’m happy to debate him.”
The comments represent a shift from Biden and his communications team’s previous hedging statements about the issue, which have led many to assume there simply wasn’t going to be a debate in the run-up to the November general election.

Welcome to ElectionLine’s A View From Abroad series, in which we speak with media figures who don’t live in America but keep a close eye on its politics. Every few weeks, these smart observers will provide a unique perspective on what promises to be a fraught and unpredictable campaign for the White House. This week, our interview is with Richard Madan, the award-winning Washington D.C. correspondent for Canada’s CBC News.
When Richard Madan and his crew get out of Washington D.C. to talk to American voters, they sometimes stick a tiny Canadian flag on the viewfinder of their camera. It’s a signal to contributors that they come in peace and Canadian pleasantries — and, by and large, it’s effective.

Amid his ongoing criminal hush-money trial, former President Donald Trump called the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which led to the death of a woman, a “peanut” in comparison to anti-war protests calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
“We’re having protests all over,” Trump told reporters outside of the courtroom on Thursday, referring to the pro-Palestine demonstrations taking place across the country. He added, “[Biden] was talking about Charlottesville. Charlottesville was a little peanut! And it was nothing compared — and the hate wasn’t the kind of hate that you have here.

The activists don’t necessarily expect to make it there. They hope they do. But in the event that Israel blocks them, boards them, and detains them — or worse — they hope their efforts will inspire international outcry and put more pressure on Israel to end its war in Gaza and blockade around the territory.

On Wednesday, an Arizona grand jury indicted 18 of Donald Trump’s allies for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state.
Boris Epshteyn, a former White House aide who has remained one of Trump’s closest advisers, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows are three of 18 indicted allies. Their names were redacted in documents released, but court officials confirmed that they were included in the group charged.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) announced the indictment Wednesday night. She focused on the 11 people who acted as pro-Trump electors in Arizona.
“A state grand jury made up of everyday regular Arizonans has now handed down felony indictments for all 11 Republican electors as well as several others connected to this scheme,” Mayes stated.
“These are serious indictments, but this is the first hurdle the state must pass in our constitutional criminal justice system,...

Actor Mark Ruffalo is known for his humanitarian works, and is also one of the celebrities asking for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Gaza conflict. In the initial days, few Hollywood celebrities signed a petition asking to end the war that was taking place in Palestine, and Ruffalo was one of them. The Artists4Ceasefire group, as they called themselves, asked in an open letter for the conflict to end, and for women and children to live in peace.

Update: Supreme Court justices expressed skepticism of Donald Trump’s argument that presidents enjoy broad immunity, but they wrestled with which certain official acts could be shielded from prosecution and which would not.
There were some suggestions of sending the case base to lower courts to decide, on an individual basis, which of the charges against Trump could be deemed as private acts and subject to criminal liability. That is a prospect that could lead to further delay in Trump’s election conspiracy case, perhaps until after the 2024 election.
A number of the justices expressed concerns that their decision in the case would impact future presidents after they leave office and the extent to which they could be subject to criminal prosecution. Justice Samuel Alito hypothesized about political rivals being prosecuted and “a cycle that destabilizes the functioning of our country.”

Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and John Eastman were among 18 co-defendants indicted by an Arizona grand jury Wednesday on charges stemming from their attempts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results by nominating fake electors.
The indictment capped off a year-long investigation spearheaded by Arizona Attorney General Kristin Mayes (D). Wednesday’s filing lists 11 named defendants and seven redacted defendants who are charged with six counts of forgery, one count of conspiracy, one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices, and one count of fraudulent schemes and practices.

Meta (formerly called Facebook) pretty much ignored the social media elephant in the room today on a post-earnings conference call, with chief financial officer Susan Li saying it’s too early to discuss what just happened in Washington, D.C. President Biden has signed into law a bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese parent company to divest the hugely popular U.S. app within about nine months or risk it being banned.
TikTok said it will take the fight to the courts.
“We’ve obviously been following the events related to TikTok closely,” said Li (although the question had been directed to Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg). “But at this stage it is just too early, I think, to assess its impact or what it would mean to our business.”

Nicola Coughlan opened up about her support for Palestine and how she was told it could affect the acting gigs she’s offered.
In a Teen Vogue cover story, the Bridgerton star sat down to discuss the show’s upcoming and highly anticipated season three. In the conversation, she also got candid about her support for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Coughlan has been vocal on social media about her support for the people, especially the children, of Palestine, who are caught in the middle of the Israel-Hamas War. She acknowledged her support stems from a “moral responsibility to give back” because of her privilege as a white woman.
The actress noted her advocacy began before she landed her breakout role on Derry Girls. She was involved in different causes, like going door-to-door campaigning for marriage equality in her home country of Ireland and marching for abortion rights.

In 2022, the fall of Roe v. Wade ignited concerns that access to contraception may be the next target. Legislative records of many Republican lawmakers reveal that these fears are not baseless.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas advocated for a reconsideration of long-standing precedents, such as the landmark 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut decision, which granted married couples the right to use contraceptives without government interference. Thomas’s opinion poses a direct threat to contraception rights.
President Joe Biden recently announced measures aimed at reducing barriers to contraceptive access. On Twitter, Biden accused “Maga Republicans” of attempting to restrict women in America from safe and Fda-approved contraception, even in states where women’s healthcare choices remain protected.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) challenged the president’s statement and asserted that “Maga Republicans” are not trying to obstruct women’s access to contraceptives and that Biden shouldn’t mislead women by suggesting that...

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said that Donald Trump’s denial of a sexual relationship with adult film actress Stormy Daniels is comical.
“I think everybody has made their own assessment of President Trump’s character. And so far as I know, you don’t pay someone $130,000 not to have sex with you,” Romney wryly remarked to CNN.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s personal attorney, clandestinely paid Daniels $130,000 by mortgaging his home ten days before the 2016 election to ensure her silence on the alleged liaison with Trump. Subsequently, Daniels divulged to 60 Minutes the details of her affair with Trump in a hotel suite after they met at a celebrity golf tournament held at Lake Tahoe in 2006.
Trump later denied any sexual involvement with Daniels, deployed his legal team to issue threats of litigation and cited violations of a confidentiality agreement. Nevertheless, Romney, a prominent critic of Trump, who himself contended as the...

President Joe Biden signed legislation on Wednesday that would force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok or incur an outright ban of the social media app within the United States.
Late Tuesday night, the Senate passed a foreign-aid package containing the proposed TikTok legislation in a 79-18 vote. Biden had previously committed to signing the bill into law should it reach his desk. The drastic move gives ByteDance 270 days to sell the app — which boasts more than 170 million American users — or be blocked from app stores and web-hosting services.

Update: President Joe Biden signed a massive national security bill that requires that ByteDance divest TikTok or face a ban on app stores as soon as nine months from now.
Biden gave remarks after signing the bill, highlighting the $95 billion outlay for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
He did not mention the provision on TikTok, the popular social media platform that has raised concerns that the Chinese government would get access to user information.
In a video posted on X/Twitter, TikTok CEO Shou Chew said that the new law was “obviously a disappointing moment, but it does not need to be a defining one.”
“Rest assured, we are not going anywhere,” he said, adding that they would challenge the law in the courts.
“The facts and the Constitution are on side, and we expect to prevail again,” he said.

When someone drops an F-bomb on Saturday Night Live, it’s generally pretty newsworthy. But for some viewers, “the ‘Gd’ term” is equally offensive.
That’s the lesson Brooke Germain, an editor at The Nevada Sagebrush, learned when she filed a Freedom of Information Act request to receive all complaints that the FCC had received about SNL going back to the start of 2023. She has since posted the full file to the public records platform MuckRock—and, well, there’s a common theme.
In January of 2023, Colin Jost joked on “Weekend Update” that while Joe Biden and Donald Trump were embroiled in very different classified document scandals, both “made Hillary Clinton want to blow her Goddamn brains out.”
A viewer from Cumming, Georgia, emailed the FCC:
“Please note watching Saturday Night Live 01/21-22/23 over the air on Wxia 11 Atlanta, Ga the ‘Gd’ term was used, and I am not ok with this to begin with.

The Senate voted Tuesday to pass a bill that would either ban TikTok from American app stores and web-hosting services or force its China-based parent company ByteDance to sell the video-sharing platform within nearly a year.
The bill, titled the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, would also create a process through which the president can designate certain social media applications with ties to foreign governments as a national security risk. The measure was approved by the Senate 79 to 18 — sending the legislation to President Joe Biden’s desk.

Since his presidency ended in January 2021, Donald Trump has spent more than $100 million on legal fees.
“I have $100 million worth of legal fees,” Trump stated during a speech he made in Sioux City, Iowa. “And they’re doing good. At least I have good lawyers because you can spend $100 million and have lousy lawyers too. It happens.”
According to a review of federal records, Trump averaged over $90,000 daily in legal-related costs for over three years – none of which he paid for with his own money.
Instead, he relied almost entirely on donations to fight the results of the 2020 election, but those accounts are nearly drained.
Trump raised $254 million online from November 4, 2020, the day after the election, to President Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021, as he asked supporters to fuel an “election defense fund.”

A sweeping new Federal Trade Commission rule will prohibit companies nation from including non-compete agreements in contracts with employees.

Updated with jury selection info: When networks and other news outlets descend on the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse today for opening statements in Donald Trump’s latest trial, much will be made of the fact that this is a moment like no other: A former president, before a jury, facing criminal proceedings.
The case itself has been referred to as the “hush money” case or the “Stormy Daniels case,” far sexier titles than the underlying issues involved: Falsification of business records.
That isn’t to say there hasn’t been drama, as Trump’s relentless attacks on the judge and his family members, along with potential witnesses, signaled raucous moments in the courtroom, just as was seen as he faced civil proceedings in cases brought by writer E. Jean Carroll and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

As Donald Trump‘s criminal trial commenced, the initial group of potential jurors arrived and offered only their names and responses to a set of screening questions for the lawyers to evaluate their suitability.
Subsequently, the attorneys diligently scoured social media platforms, searching for hidden biases or extreme viewpoints within the jury pool. One prospective juror was dismissed by the judge when the lawyers for Trump stumbled upon a 2017 online post that exclaimed “Lock him up!” about Trump.
