Rob Wade has been in charge of Fox for just over 18 months, a period that coincided with the fallout of the pandemic and two strikes in Hollywood.
But the Brit is optimistic that while the television business is challenging, it is starting to right size itself after a period of heavy spending by streamer rivals.
In a wide-ranging interview with Deadline, ahead of his keynote session at the Banff World Media Festival, Wade talked about the company’s recent restructure, a new windowing strategy, trying to find a “silver bullet” in animation, comedy hits and big unscripted swings.
Don’t worry, there’s also a bit of Baywatch.
“I know it’s challenging, but things are changing. We’re very much open for business, doing interesting creative deals and the business is right sizing itself, that’s a good thing. We’re trying to refocus how we do things and...

Sarah Jessica Parker already knew what it was like starring in a hit show with Sex and the City. But the actor considered the show fortunate it didn’t air at the same time another popular show did. Parker believed that her HBO series wouldn’t have stood a chance against it.
Sarah Jessica Parker felt ‘Sex and the City’ would’ve been squashed by ‘Desperate Housewives’ Felicity Huffman, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Marcia Cross | Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
Parker felt there wasn’t much of a competition between Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. On the surface level, the two shows seemed to have quite a bit in common. They both focused on a cast of women and their day-to-day lives as they dealt with friendships, dating, families and careers. But they had stark differences as well.

Exclusive: Fox, along with the rest of the broadcasters, is breathing a sigh of relief that new scripted programming will return for the second half of the 2023-2024 TV season. But, while difficult, the fall season wasn’t all bad.
To fill the airtime, Fox leaned on adult animation and unscripted programming — both of which put up positive numbers for the network. New series like Krapopolis put up promising numbers, while the return of Kitchen Nightmares and a second season of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test helped keep ratings steady this season.
While the upended fall schedule due to the dual strikes was “frustrating,” CEO of Fox Entertainment Rob Wade told Deadline that network’s “mindset quickly moved from frustration to seeing opportunity.”

Desperate Housewives delivered no shortage of drama, both on and off the screen. The soapy ABC series was known both for its juicy plotlines and feuds among the cast. The on-set tension even extended to those who weren’t in front of the camera, according to writer Patty Lin, who worked on the show in its first season.

Lin was a seasoned television writer who’d previously worked on Freaks and Geeks and Friends when she landed a job on the “darkly funny” Desperate Housewives in the spring of 2004. Hollywood was buzzing about the show, which had been created by Marc Cherry. Lin accepted the gig without a second thought, despite some early “warning signs,” she recalls in her new memoir, End Credits: How I Broke Up With Hollywood.

One of the things that gave Desperate Housewives its staying power was the fact that so many people had different favorite characters. Whether it was the idea that you could relate to one of them or you loved to hate them, the show’s writers gave us plenty of memorable characters to choose from. Marc Cherry knows that all too well — he created the show, and he once told us that he had his favorites: Gabrielle and Carlos Solis, played by Eva Longoria and Ricardo Chavira. In 2012, Eva Longoria wrapped up the eighth and final season of Desperate Housewives, and she had a decision to make about her future. “That last year of Housewives,” she says, “I remember getting every single show offered to me to star in … to star in … to star in …”
Amid the throes of the streaming era, it’s easy to forget the omnipresence of a network breakout like Housewives. In its first season in 2004, Housewives was pulling in more viewers on Sunday nights than the average Sunday Night Football game does in 2023. The show — along with early-aughts entries Grey’s Anatomy and Lost — helped catapult network ABC back to primetime dominance. Bob Iger, who was named CEO of ABC parent company Disney in the year after Housewives’ debut, “would take us to dinner, individually,” remembers Longoria. Eva Longoria broke out as Gabrielle Solis in the dramedy series Desperate Housewives. More than a decade since the show ended its eight-season run, Longoria is imagining what her character would be doing and opens up about whether she would return for a reboot.
“She’d be an influencer for sure,” Longoria said about Gabby’s whereabouts now during an interview on Access Hollywood while promoting her feature directorial debut Flamin’ Hot. “She’d be like a social media mogul.”
Longoria said that she “would be the first to sign up for a reboot” adding, “I miss Gabby so much. I miss being Gabby Solis.”
However, the Telenovela alum said that she doesn’t think series creator Marc Cherry would be interested in revisiting Wisteria Lane.
“I’ve talked to him several times,” she said. “He feels like there’s no why now? For the sake of a reboot, he wouldn’t do it.

Eva Longoria has spoken out on the inequality of women’s roles behind the camera in Hollywood, claiming things are getting worse, not better.
The actress turned activist and director told the UK’s Times newspaper that Hollywood is not the “progressive entity” people believe.
She said:
“We are getting less jobs as directors than two years ago. People look at Hollywood as a progressive entity and it’s not… I think we’re more aware, thanks to the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, about what’s appropriate in work environments.
“That’s been a game-changer for our industry as far as how we’re treated on sets or in writers’ rooms and meetings. Has it led to hiring more women? I don’t think so.”

David DeLuise is reflecting on some fellow actors’ unprofessional behaviour on TV sets — and he’s not afraid to name names.
During the latest edition of PodCo’s “Wizards of Waverly Pod” rewatch series, in which he and fellow “Wizards of Waverly Place” alum Jennifer Stone share hosting duties, DeLuise looked back at the time he landed a guest spot as a murder victim on “CSI: Miami”, in which he shared a scene with star David Caruso.
His character, he explained, met his end after being stabbed in the neck, with Caruso’s Det. Horatio Caine showing up at the crime scene.
“So I was dead. All I did in the scene with him, I was dead,” DeLuise recalled.

After playing Kimberly Shaw in “Melrose Place” and Bree Van de Kamp in “Desperate Housewives,” Marcia Cross is ready for her next iconic role.
“I always assumed that after ‘Desperate Housewives’ there will be a third act. It has not happened yet. That’s the double-edged sword of being an ‘icon.’ Everybody thinks you are that character and by the time they forget about it, you are not on anybody’s list anymore,” she said at Series Mania in Lille, France.
“I am at this funny crossroad: I am this incredibly ripe human and yet Hollywood is not particularly interested. We are tackling LGBTQ+ issues, although there is still a long way to go, we are talking about people of color, but – and I hate to say it – we don’t love to see older women. We were 40-year-old women doing ‘Dh’ and that was a big deal. Now, I want to see 60-year-old women.

Krapopolis could spawn Fox’s next iconic animated figure to sit alongside Homer Simpson, Bob Belcher and Peter Griffin, according to the network’s President of Scripted Programming Michael Thorn.

Media conglomerates have engaged in a wave of un-renewals and other cutbacks as economic headwinds and the realities of going on a streaming bender have hit home.
That hasn’t been the case, however, at Fox, which after separating from its former in-house studio, 20th Television, in the 2018 Disney deal has maintained a purposefully smaller profile. Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn even sees opportunity to contrast his operation, both at the network and in-house Fox Entertainment Studios, with that of larger rivals.
“That is part of our sales pitch,” Thorn told The Hollywood Reporter. “Because we’re not high volume, we try to offer the best process possible that’s not bogged down by layers, that’s not bogged down by extensive notes, where each project, whether they go forward or not, feels like they’re prioritized. At first, it seemed like a bizarre anomaly: In August, Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav decided to shelve the already-finished HBO Max “Batgirl” movie — forever. Many more projects were not only canceled but also removed from their services, ranging from already-renewed series fresh off of their first seasons and in production on the second (like “Minx”) and others that were supposed tentpoles (like “Westworld”).
Dozens of culled shows and movies later, HBO Max had a hastily dug graveyard strewn with existing content mowed down by accountants. It looked like bean-counters gone wild — but when Wbd currently holds nearly 47 billion in net debt, every dollar counts.
“We’re done with that chapter,” Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said last week of the barrel-burn. He referred to 2022 as “a year of restructuring” and 2023 as “a year of relaunching and building.”
Wbd may be done right-sizing its pipeline — but the industry is not.

After writing “The Sopranos” episodes, Matthew Weiner thought he was part of the HBO “family.”
However, the “Mad Men” creator revealed that new executive management at the network following visionary Chris Albrecht’s exit led to him being ignored, per the new book “It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin.
According to the oral history of the network, then-hbo President Carolyn Strauss “snubbed” Weiner and HBO did not even respond to the “Mad Men” pitch, despite “The Sopranos” showrunner David Chase urging “everyone at the network to give it a look.”
Weiner recalled, “It was very disappointing to me, as I pushed the rock up the hill, that they did not notice me. Because I was part of the family.”
Eventually, “Mad Men” landed at cable network AMC, whose goal was to “do an HBO kind of series,” as Weiner said.
