In Aardman’s half-hour stop-motion comedy film “Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas,” Timmy the lamb finds himself whisked off on an adventure to the local town, hidden in a large parcel, and thence onward to the house of Ben the farmer, his wife Jin and their daughter Ella. Shaun and the flock must mount a daring rescue. The making of the animated show was also an adventure, producer Richard Beek and director Steve Cox tell Variety.

After working behind the scenes on 2015’s Oscar nominated Shaun the Sheep Movie, Will Becher and Richard Phelan jumped at the chance to make their feature directorial debut with A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, introducing gorgeous new characters and environments into a classic stop-motion world.
Produced by British studio Aardman Animations, and distributed in the U.S. by Netflix, Farmageddon picks up with Shaun the Sheep—a beloved character first introduced in 1995—as he and his farmyard pals encounter an alien named Lu-La, looking to get her home before she’s discovered by forces that would bring her harm.
With characters carefully crafted by hand in clay and plasticine—and 3D printing employed in the fabrication of more solid parts—the latest Shaun film comprised “an almost insane level of detail,” Phelan says. And while both Becher and Phelan had taken on above-the-line roles in the past on Aardman...

No asteroids are hurtling toward Earth in “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” though a flying frozen pizza does softly slice the top off an elderly shopper’s hairdo: That’s roughly the level of quirky peril we’re talking about in the latest outing from Aardman Animations, and as usual, the British stop-motion masters cheerfully prove that benign needn’t mean bland. Arriving nearly five years after the Oscar-nominated “Shaun the Sheep Movie” successfully expanded the bucolic “Wallace and Gromit” spinoff to feature length, this baa-lated but baa-guiling sequel — if such puns make you wince, perhaps give the film a wide berth — returns Aardman to winningly offbeat form after last year’s adept but oddly anemic prehistoric adventure “Early Man.”
“Farmageddon” is the first feature-length sequel from an outfit that has experienced steadily diminishing commercial returns since “Chicken Run” raked in $225 million worldwide at the turn of the century.

Despite the looming specter of Brexit, the UK production business continues to drive strong numbers — even if preliminary statistics released by the BFI today do not all constitute new records. Film and high-end TV production spend combined exceeded £3.1B ($4B) in 2018. Television saw the bigger increases, repping £1.173B ($1.53B) of the total for a 4% hike on 2017 and the highest level since the tax credit was introduced in 2013. Film production spend was £1.924B ($2.51B), the 2nd best score on record. The figures were released today as part of the BFI’s annual statistics report which also covers box office.
Inward investment, with the U.S. a key producing partner for the UK, was £795M on high-end TV and £1.628B on features. Significantly, three of the top box office draws locally in 2018 were made in Britain: Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War (£70.8M), Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (£65.5M...

Hilary Swank in ‘I Am Mother.’
Executives at Studiocanal are so confident that Grant Sputore’s I Am Mother will get a meaningful Us release they plan to launch the sci-fi thriller in Australia after the Us.
Adelaide Film Festival audiences will see a work-in-progress of Sputore’s debut feature, which stars Hilary Swank, newcomer Clara Rugaard, a former Disney Channel star in Denmark, and Rose Byrne, on October 12.
Rugaard plays a lonely teenager who is raised by ‘Mother,’ a kindly robot designed to repopulate the Earth following the extinction of mankind. That bond is threatened when a blood-drenched woman played by Swank turns up, calling into question everything the girl had been told about the outside world.
Byrne will voice the robot, which was designed by Kiwi special effects house Weta Workshop. Sputore described the collaboration with the Weta team led by founder Richard Taylor as a “dream.”

Aardman Animations and Studiocanal are planning to produce a sequel to the Oscar-nominated 2015 children’s film Shaun The Sheep Movie, to be directed by the first film’s co-director Richard Starzak, Deadline reports. What’s not immediately apparent, though, is that this not merely a follow-up to a successful film, but an expansion of a 27-year-old complex expansive universe of short films, feature films, and TV shows known as the Aardmaniverse. The fact that you’re probably not even familiar with that term really just goes to show how little respect this umbrella of droll storytelling gets. Named for studio Aardman Animations, the shared universe is an ever-expanding outgrowth of British stop-motion animator Nick Park’s 1989 short films Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out (about a man and his dog) and Creature Comforts (in which human interview subjects are replaced with animated animals).

Aardman, StudioCanal and director Richard Starzak will re-team for Shaun The Sheep Movie 2...
Here's a slice of news we've been waiting for: Shaun The Sheep Movie is getting a sequel. The 2015 film earned critical plaudits, adoration from families and an Oscar nomination, making it something of a surprise that a sequel announcement didn't come months ago.

One of movie fans favorite events of Oscar Week was held Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, as the Academy held the eighth annual event celebrating the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film.
The evening featured clips from each film, followed by an onstage discussion with each group of nominated filmmakers.
This year’s eclectic mix – Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie and When Marnie Was There – are as international as they are distinct.
Employing a stunning variety of animation techniques, the nominees explored a wide range of topics, including existential despair, devastation of natural resources, learning to handle emotion, the value of friendship and surviving the difficulties of adolescence.
This year, members were able to stream the movies and voting came from all over the world.
The evening’s hosts were Don Hall, Chris Williams, Roy Conli, last year’s Oscar winning team from Big Hero 6.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ gorgeous relationship drama Carol have tied for the lead with nine nominations apiece, with both films receiving nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (in their respective categories). Not far behind is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s revenge epic The Revenant with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing.

From shorts to features hailing fro all over the world, 2015 was yet another banner year in the world of animation. To help dive deeper in the process behind some of the best offerings, we have a one-hour THR roundtable featuring Pete Docter (Inside Out), Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa), Richard Starzak (Shaun the Sheep Movie), Steve Martino (The Peanuts Movie), Roger Allers (The Prophet), and Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur).
In the chat, they discuss the painstakingly detailed process behind each of their films, with Starzak noting his process. “I blindly said I wanted to make a modern-day silent movie [with Shaun the Sheep],” he says. “And even my producers said, ‘I think that’s crazy. I don’t think it’s going to work.’ And to be honest, I didn’t think it was going to work either. I didn’t fully believe it was going to work. That was the sort of fear that I like.

The Film Experience loves Toronto. Not only is it home to the best festival, Tiff, but it's also full of Canadians and our own Amir Soltani. On top of those two pluses, the Toronto Film Critics Association includes great critics like Calum Marsh, Bill Chambers and Angelo Murrada (the latter two have guested on "Smackdowns" right here!). The Tfca was established in 1997 and gave their first Best Film prize to Atom Egoyan's brilliant movie The Sweet Hereafter. Charlotte Rampling in '45 Years.' Charlotte Rampling, Kristen Stewart winners: Boston Society of Film Critics Awards 2015 Those following the movies' awards season will enjoy a smorgasbord of winners, runners-up, and WTFs/How could they? today, Dec. 6, '15. The Boston Society of Film Critics, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Online, and the British Independent Film Awards are all announcing their winners (and, by extension, non-winners). But not to worry, in case your favorite is not to be found on their lists, there's always next year. The Boston Film Critics named their winners and runners-up at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge. On Sunday morning, they tweeted: “We're here! There's coffee! Dues paid! Wifi working! Pizza ordered! Let the debating begin!” 'Studio tactic' leads to voting woes There was quite a bit of debating, it seems, as two hours later they had announced only a handful of winners.

The first picture from BBC One's Shaun the Sheep Christmas special The Farmer's Llamas has been revealed.
The image sees the loveable character meet a pack of mischievous llamas for the first time.
When the llamas, Hector, Fernando and Raul, start causing mayhem at Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun quickly regrets tricking the farmer into buying them and decides he must take action.
The Farmer's Llamas has been created by Richard Starzak and will be directed by Jay Grace.
Shaun made his debut back in 1995 as a major character in the Wallace and Gromit short film A Close Shave.
This new Christmas special marks Shaun's first solo TV special following a Cbbc series and a big screen adventure.

France’s Adama also nominated for European Film Awards.
The European Film Academy has announced the three nominations in the category European Animated Feature Film 2015.
Based on a list of films provided by Cartoon, the European Association of Animation Film, as well as on individual film submissions, a committee decided on Simon Rouby’s French feature Adama; UK-France co-production Shaun The Sheep The Movie, written and directed by Richard Starzak and Mark Burton; and Song of the Sea, Tomm Moore’s Oscar-nominated fable that was a co-pro of Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, France and Luxembourg.
The committee comprised Efa Board Member Antonio Saura, producer (Spain), animation experts Marcel Jean (Annecy Ff, Canada) and Anja Šošić (Human Ark, Poland), as well as Petteri Pasanen (Anima Vitae, Finland), Iain Harvey (The Illuminated Film Company, UK) and Jacques-Rémy Girerd (director, France), the latter three representing Cartoon.
The nominated films will soon be submitted to more than 3,000 Efa members, who will elect...

When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with The Farmer, a caravan, and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it’s up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to Mossy Bottom Farm.
Shaun The Sheep Movie powers through visual puns, sight gags and rollicking plot twists to arrive at a hard-won realization: there’s no place like home.
As there is no dialogue from any of the characters, the music plays such an important role in the movie. That’s where the fantastic, colorful score from composer Ilan Eshkeri comes in.
Complete with the Shaun the Sheep theme, lively cues, and songs, including the award-friendly “Feels Like Summer” song, Eshkeri score is a wonderful soundtrack for a very funny film.

Though clever and cheeky like most Aardman Animations' productions, Shaun the Sheep Movie is a decidedly more slight, if ever quaint, effort for the company. A ruminant character spawned from the Wallace & Gromit short film A Close Shave and later the titular star of the television series "Shaun the Sheep," Mark Burton and Richard Starzak's big-screen debut for the wool-covered once-sidekick deliberately focuses as mightily as it can on keeping itself as snappy and pun-enthused as possible -- with barely a moment wasted with its comedy during the 85 minute running time. Every second crackles with energy and enthusiasm, keeping its playful spirits up high and bewitchingly captures the silly spunk the stop-motion purists provide best in gracious handfuls. But as passionate and loving as the production often becomes, the heart never quite pops out as vitally as it would so plentifully during Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit...

In many ways Aardman is the studio that time forgot.
The beloved British animation house shuns cutting-edge computer graphics and fanciful 3D imagery. Inside its Bristol, England, studio you’ll find men and women pushing and prodding little bits of Plasticine to make stop-motion movies, a technique first seen on film more than a century ago.
Yet you’d be a fool to call Aardman out of touch. The company’s hit films, including Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Flushed Away, are comedic masterworks that appeal to both young and old, casual moviegoers and the most sophisticated cineastes.
Their latest effort is Shaun the Sheep Movie, an 85-minute gem based on Aardman’s children’s TV series that airs on the BBC in seven-minute episodes — and which includes no spoken words.
“We were keen from the outset to stick to the idea that there would...
