Playwright Alan Bennett has written original screenplay The Choral, which will begin filming this summer.
There’s a reason a remake of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads monologues (pictured above) was one of the first things put into production when the pandemic started in 2020. Not only were they easy to film with a single cast member, but the texts are also regarded as modern classics of drama, each story a masterpiece in construction and storytelling. You only have to watch the original versions to see the astonishing power of David Haig in Playing Sandwiches or Dame Thora Hird in A Cream Cracker Under The Settee.
The Choral, meanwhile, is Alan Bennett’s first original script written for the screen in forty years, after 1984 comedy A Private Function. The synopsis reads as follows:
Set in Ramsden, Yorkshire in 1916, the plot centers on the chorus master and most of the men of the ambitious local Choral Society,...

Minority Report is the latest Hollywood blockbuster to get the stage — and gender-swap — treatment.
The science fiction tech noir based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novella and later made into the 2002 box office hit directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is being turned into a play that will make its world premiere in the U.K. in spring 2024. The show is part of a co-production between three U.K.-based theaters in association with Simon Friend Entertainment and by arrangement with Electric Shepherd Productions.
Adapted by actor-writer David Haig with Life of Pi‘s Max Webster set to direct, the new stage play will hold its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse, opening on Feb. 16 and running through March 9. It will then have two more separate runs, first at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from March 22 to April 6, followed by a month-long staging at London’s Lyric Hammersmith between April 19 and...

Looks like we have the latest trend of turning movies and shows into stage plays headed our way. We've already got Stranger Things looking to extend its pop cultural footprint beyond TV screens, and Paranormal Activity is also being turned into a stage show. You can add Minority Report to the list.
Minority Report, loosely adapted for the screen from Philip K. Dick's 1956 novella The Minority Report and directed by Steven Spielberg, the 2002 movie sees Tom Cruise as Chief John Anderton, part of a special police unit is able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes, an officer from that unit is himself accused of a future murder.
They derive their information from "pre-cogs," people born with special pre-cognitive abilities (Samantha Morton plays the main pre-cog), but Anderton soon discovers that something is very wrong with the system.

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Killing Eve’s Season 4 premiere, “Just Dunk Me.”] After three seasons of inventive murder, fabulous outfits and a whole lot of unresolved tension, Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle’s (Jodie Comer) story is almost at an end. But perhaps the largest question lingering over Season 4’s final eight episodes — well, other than whether ‘Villaneve’ finally acts on several seasons’ worth of slow-simmering tension — is whether the central duo will live past the end credits. Here, we speculate on the fates of the assassin and the ex-MI6 agent as they approach their final deadly adventure. Killing Eve isn’t known for its feel-good aura. While there’s plenty of black humor, it is, after all, a show about murder. Beloved and innocent characters, like Kenny (Sean Delaney) — who never did anything wrong in his life, ever — and Bill (David Haig) — who was too good for this world — die in awful ways.

Focus Features has pushed back the release of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” two months and the sequel will now be released on May 20, the company announced Wednesday.
The sequel was previously scheduled for release on March 18. The film will be released in the U.K. by Universal on April 29.
While plot details for the film have been sparse, writer Julian Fellowes told People that Lady Mary continues to run Downton as the mother of the next Earl of Grantham.
“As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further,” Fellowes said. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s, which is merely the beginning of the modern world.”

Jodie Comer, Martin Freeman, Tamsin Greig, Kristin Scott Thomas and Imelda Staunton are among the stars lined up for new BBC One adaptations of playwright Alan Bennett’s acclaimed “Talking Heads” monologues, which start filming Tuesday.
Ten of the original pieces are being remade, having first aired on BBC Television in 1988 and 1998, winning two BAFTA awards. Two new monologues, written by Bennett last year, are also being filmed.
The contained nature of Bennett’s monologues means they are one of the very few dramas that can be produced while following guidelines on safe working practices during Covid-19. Filming is taking place at BBC Elstree Studios using existing sets.
They are produced by former National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner’s London Theatre Company and ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ producer Kevin Loader.
Lead director Hytner, whose film credits include “The Madness of King George” and “The History Boys,” said:...

The BBC has dusted off British playwright Alan Bennett’s famous series of Talking Heads monologues and is remaking them for the coronavirus age with a head-turning cast.
Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer, Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman and the soon-to-be star of The Crown Imelda Staunton are among those attached to the project, which will breathe new life into the BAFTA-winning show that ran for two seasons in 1988 and a decade later in 1998.
Talking Heads will be produced by London Theatre Company for BBC One, and overseen by Bennett’s long-time collaborator Sir Nicholas Hytner, who staged shows including The History Boys. The plan is to make 12 episodes, 10 of which will be monologues filmed for the original series and two new stories Bennett sent Hytner last year.

Ah yes, we have a winner for the best ‘Comfort Food Movie’ of them all. When a trailer for this show popped up at a screening of The Farewell back in August, I heard gasps of excitement from the (slightly older-skewing) audience, as if everyone’s favorite relatives were coming back to town. Loyal fans of the massively popular TV series will be delighted: if you enjoyed it week by week or streaming, you’re going to love this ‘one more time’ get-together with the elegant Crawleys and their engaging domestic staff.

The feature film version of “Downton Abbey” is heading for an impressive $30 million opening weekend at 3,079 sites for an easy victory at the North American box office, early estimates showed Friday.
The launch of Brad Pitt’s space drama “Ad Astra” will land in second with about $20 million, while Sylvester Stallone’s action-thriller “Rambo: Last Blood” will reel in around $18 million. Stx’s second frame of “Hustlers” should finish fourth with about $16 million and Warner Bros.’ third weekend of “It: Chapter Two” will follow in fifth with about $14 million to hit $176 million in its first 17 days.
Of the three new films, “Downton Abbey” is faring the best, easily out-performing pre-release forecasts — which had been in the $20 million range for each of the trio. When creator Julian Fellowes began his ITV/PBS TV series “Downton Abbey” in 2010, it offered warm and cosy counter-programming to the edgier, antihero-laden shows of the time like “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” and “Boardwalk Empire.” Although the show’s notorious third season required quite the bloodbath to deal with cast departures and a subsequent rape storyline garnered well-deserved condemnation, by the end of its run, the show was able to swing back to what Fellowes does best: cutting wit, mildly soapy drama, and genteel social commentary.
Universal Pictures and Focus Features’ big screen continuation — picking up less than five years after the show ended in 2015 — doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to maintaining the look and feel of that lavish fairy tale.

“Ad Astra” premiered on Thursday at the Venice Film Festival. Fox had planned to open the title on May 24 but Disney shifted “Ad Astra” to the fall after buying the Fox’s movie assets. Gray began shooting the movie, which carries an $80 million budget, in 2017.
Fox saw strong performance in 2015 from its space-travel movie “The Martian,” which grossed $630 million worldwide. Sony’s 2016 space film “Passengers” pulled in $300 million in global box office.

Hey, "Downton Abbey" fans. It looks like your favorite TV show has now officially become a movie! Focus Features along with Universal Pictures International recently released the very first movie trailer (below) for it! This is definitely a follow-up to the TV show which ended in December 2015. When it ended, the timeline was New Year's Eve 1925. According to the plot information that we were able to dig up for this movie, it will be set in the Autumn of 1927. According to what we saw in this new movie trailer, the estate has had to cut its operating budget. There's a lot less staff on hand. There's no maid, valet or even a nanny! The King and Queen are set to pay the estate a visit. We're also shown that the former head butler Carson shows back up on the scene to lend a helping hand to the estate's operation. The...

The feature film continues the story that began on the beloved TV series following the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the beginning of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house. The show originally ended in 2015 after six "series", but will continue now four years later. The original series cast has returned: Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Allen Leech, Elizabeth McGovern, Tuppence Middleton, Brendan Coyle, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Bonneville, David Haig, Joanne Froggatt, Phyllis Logan, and Laura Carmichael. This looks charming and extravagant, and actually considerably epic, a worthy feature film version of this endearing television series. Have a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Engler's Downton Abbey movie,...

The times are a-changing at Downton Abbey. After debuting at CinemaCon in March, the full trailer for the big-screen adaptation of “Downton Abbey” was finally released Tuesday for your posh viewing pleasure.
The film picks up 18 months after the end of the Emmy-winning series in 1927. “No maid, no valet, no nanny even. It’s 1927 and we are modern folk,” Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) quips.
Everything is pretty chill and sun-kissed at the Crawley estate until they get word that King George V and his wife, Queen Mary, are coming to visit for a luncheon, a royal parade and a dinner, sending them into stressed-out prep mode (or as stressed out as aristocratic Brits can get). Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), donning an adorable sleek bob now, recruits the only person who could pull all of this together in time: beloved butler Carson (Jim Carter).

I was surprisingly really into this series when it was airing on PBS. It told some great stories and was filled with wonderful characters. It’s good to see many of them come back for the film, and I’m looking forward to watching it.

The Crawleys play host to a royal guest in their sumptuous return to the screen. King George V himself is dropping in on the family in the feature film “Downton Abbey” that continues the events of the hit show, according to the first trailer released Tuesday.
And everyone is on hand for the occasion, including Jim Carter as butler Charles Carson coming out of retirement. Even Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess has a few quips in store:
“Do you have enough cliches to get through the visit,” she says.

After a successful small screen run, beloved period series “Downton Abbey” is gearing up for the inevitable: a full-length film followup that unites the majority of the show’s ensemble cast and thrusts them inside a still-changing world. After first screening at CinemaCon back in March — where much of its under-wraps plot was revealed — the first full trailer for Michael Engler’s “Downton Abbey” is now available for tasteful, refined viewing.
Picking up in 1927 (over a year after the endpoint of the series), the film’s trailer hints early on that the world is evolving, and so is the Crawley family. The trailer even kicks off with Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) joking to some visitors that they’ve got “no maid, no nanny, no valet. It’s 1927 and we are modern folk.”

The Crawley family are getting ready to return to our screens with the upcoming Downton Abbey movie. And this time around, they’re tasked with the highest honor: welcoming the King and Queen to Grantham estate.
Yes, the upcoming film, itself based on the wildly popular ITV period drama, will see Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville scrambling to prepare for the royal visit. As if that wasn’t stressful enough, they’ve also been left with no maid and no nanny. Heck, there isn’t even a valet! As such, it’d be wise to prepare for high stakes and high drama when the movie arrives in theaters this fall.
But before then, we’ll be getting our first proper look at it tomorrow, when the highly anticipated trailer drops online. We don’t have an exact time for it just yet, but rest assured it’ll...

Downton is getting some royal visitors (and perhaps some big changes to go with them). While the plot of Michael Engler’s big screen continuation of the beloved PBS and ITV series has been mostly kept under wraps since the film was announced in July of 2018, when it was billed simply as the “next chapter” — even the recently released first teaser only showed off the grounds of the grand residence — the first full trailer for the film isn’t hiding the plot. The king and queen are coming to Downton!
The new trailer exclusively debuted during Universal Pictures’ Wednesday morning session at CinemaCon during which Peter Kujawski, president of Focus Features, promised, “This year, the Crawley family finally makes the leap to the big screen.” And it’s a very large family indeed, and an evolving one.

“Downton Abbey” fans got extra reason to be excited as a new trailer for the PBS hit series’ big screen debuted at CinemaCon on Wednesday, with two very special royal visitors coming for tea.
The teaser from Focus Features shows Lord Grantham, his family and staff dealing with the continuing changes of the Roaring ’20s.
Set in 1927, the house is shocked to learn that King George V is on his way – so it’s all hands on deck for the Crawleys, as even beloved butler Carson comes out of retirement to return to the house he kept impeccably in order.

Strange as it might seem, there are cinemagoers who don’t find a thrill in sexy and charismatic actors in capes and skin-tight body suits engaging in earth-shaking clashes. Nope, for them an uncomfortable dinner party and Imelda Staunton raising her eyebrow ever-so-slightly are exciting enough. That’s why this September’s Downton Abbey movie will probably do absolutely gangbusters at the box office.
Seriously though, the film is going to do some very big business. After all, the television show of the same name that ran from 2010-2015 was a gargantuan international smash. That wrapped up in 1925 with the central family of aristocrats struggling to preserve their estate, with the movie presumably showing us how they’ve gotten on in the Jazz Age.
Plot details remain pretty thin on the ground, though it’s been confirmed that Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael and Maggie Smith (among others) are returning.

What’s Downton Abbey without the effortlessly charming Matthew Crawley?
Brought to life by Legion actor Dan Stevens, we had reason to believe last year that Mr. Crawley was headed back to the manor to prepare for the upcoming movie adaptation, which was said to have most, if not all, of the mainline cast returning.
We know that Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville, among many others, are already on the docket, with series creator Julian Fellowes on script duties. The latter will also co-produce this one-off period drama alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge, but it seems that Stevens won’t be joining them after all.
An Instagram post (see below) from last year had fans thinking the actor would be involved in the project, but catching up with him this week, Deadline has now confirmed that unfortunately, the Downton Abbey movie will be without Mr. Crawley.

The first teaser trailer for the long awaited ‘Downton Abbey’ movie has appeared online over the weekend but it makes sure not to give us a glance into anything that might actually go down.
The television series Downton Abbey followed the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house. Over its 6 seasons, the series garnered 3 Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, 69 Emmy nominations in total, making Downton Abbey the most nominated non-us television show in the history of the Emmys – even earning a Special BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show along the way.
Finally, making it’s way to the big screen, all the major cast are expected back including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Matthew Goode, and Allen Leech.

The Crawley family cordially invites you to what they promise will be a cinematic event. The first teaser for “Downton Abbey,” the film adaptation and continuation of the long-running ITV and PBS series, has just dropped. And it’s a regal, impressive first look.
In the teaser, the maids are making the beds, they’re crossing their Ts on all the signatures, and the bell is ringing at the front gate for guests to arrive.
While the plot is unknown for the new film, the original series followed the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country home.

Forget Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home – the real hit trailer of the month has finally landed! I’m talking, of course, about Downton Abbey. Though the film will most likely lack intergalactic space battles and insane superpowered action sequences, it will feature uncomfortable dinner parties and Imelda Staunton raising her eyebrow ever-so-slightly.
Seriously though, this movie is probably going to do some big business. The television show of the same name that ran from 2010-2015 was a gargantuan worldwide smash and ended its story in 1925, with the aristocratic family struggling to preserve their estate. Presumably, the film will pick up soon after and though plot details remain thin, we know that Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael and Maggie Smith (among others) are all confirmed to be returning. Not only that, but they’ll be joined by a stellar supporting cast that includes Imelda Staunton,...
