Following in the footsteps of Peter Bogdanovich’s Stalker and Brian Trenchard-Smith’s Dead End Drive-In, Phil Hawkins’ The Last Showing returns us from our adventures on the moors and in the claustrophobic confines of the jungle to turn the place where we appreciate the filmic dreams conjured up by filmmakers into a nightmarish and hellish place.
If back in the 1980’s Robert Englund rolled over sweet dreams like black storm clouds, then three decades later his eye has turned to the multiplex where we dare to dream and lose ourselves in worlds removed from our reality.
In a special four part feature, writer-director Phil Hawkins, producer Alexandra Baranska and lead actors Finn Jones and Emily Berrington offer a series of youthful perspectives from behind and in front of the camera, before Robert Englund takes the stage to present the cineaste behind the icon.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Back in January, Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Hanna) was reported to have been cast in director Peter Jackson’s return to middle earth with The Hobbit: Part 1, and she was rumored to be playing the part of Itaril, a Silvan Elf. Confirmation of her casting wasn’t made by some tabloid, but by way of casting director Ros Hubbard, who mentioned Ronan’s casting in the film during an interview about Irish-born actors.
One month after that report, Ronan herself spoke with The Irish Times about appearing in the The Hobbit, and the actress took the opportunity to clear up that report:

Saoirse Ronan was nabbed on the red carpet at the Irish Film and Television Awards. Ronan said there were rumors going around about her involvement in "The Hobbit,” but that’s all they are at the moment -- rumors. She said, "No, nothing has actually been confirmed yet. I’d love to get a role in ‘The Hobbit.’ I think everybody in the world would like a role in ‘The Hobbit.’” Last month casting agent Ros Hubbard had said that Ronan had been cast for the film being directed by Oscar winner Peter Jackson, who directed Ronan last year in the 2009 film “The Lovely Bones.” Hubbard said, “[W]orking with Peter Jackson is like working with family. So they’ll have a great time. Saoirse’s family will go too. Everyone is very close and very loving on those sorts of jobs. It’s not like typical studio movies at all.

Speaking at this weekend's Irish Film and Television Awards, actress Saoirse Ronan said that despite reports and comments from casting director Ros Hubbard, she's not yet locked for the Tolkien adaptation.
"No, nothing has actually been confirmed yet. I'd love to get a role in The Hobbit. I think everybody in the world would like a role in The Hobbit" she told The Irish Times.
Meanwhile reports have emerged in the New Zealand press (via The Nz Herald) that Peter Jackson has been refused permission to shoot in and around Mt. Ngauruhoe, the mountain served as Mt. Doom in the 'Rings' trilogy, because the area has been declared sacred.
Jackson recently flew to Queenstown to inspect Mt. Taranaki and the Southern Alps as a potential alternative.

Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" wasn't a perfect film, but through its flaws, leading lady Saoirse Ronan rose above it all and turned in a fantastic breakout performance as dearly departed Susie Salmon.
As a result, Ronan's star is deservedly on the rise: the 16-year-old actress was most recently seen in the Ed Harris and Colin Farrell-starring "The Way Back," and she's got the hotly anticipated action flick "Hanna" coming our way later this year. But "Hanna" won't be her only foray into the action arena, and "Lovely Bones" won't be her last collaboration with Jackson — because according to a new rumor, Saoirse is headed to Middle-Earth for "The Hobbit."
Casting director Ros Hubbard spoke with The Irish Film & Television Network about her work on "The Hobbit," and in the process, she seemingly revealed Ronan's involvement in the two-part "Lord of the Rings" prequel.

Surprise, or not, but The Lovely Bones star, young and sweet Saoirse Ronan, is taking on a part in Peter Jackson’s upcoming two-part prequel The Hobbit!
The movie is now expected to start shooting late next month, and just in case you’re wondering why – this sudden delay comes because Jackson has been hospitalized with a perforated ulcer.
So, what do we know about this project at this moment?
The Hobbit has quite interesting cast, that already includes Martin Freeman in the lead as Bilbo Baggins with Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen reprising their roles from the Lord of the Rings franchise, along with a whole host of actors including Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Sylvester McCoy among others.
On the other hand, still no word on who Ronan will be playing, although she’s been rumored as Itaril.

It's not official right now, but all signs are that "Atonement" and "The Lovely Bones" actress Saoirse Ronan will join the cast of Peter Jackson's two-film epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit".
The news slipped out in an Iftn interview with casting director Ros Hubbard who talked about Irish actors in the forthcoming films and mentioned Ronan as being a part of the production.
Ronan herself however said recently she hadn’t yet been offered a part. Even if she has - nothing has been signed as yet. The young actress has been long rumoured for the role of the Silvan elf Itaril. Age-wise though, Ronan also matches Primula Brandybuck, a pretty young Hobbit who later becomes Frodo's mother.

Cinema Blend’s Josh Tyler pegged it correctly when he concluded, back in November, that one of the four “big story problems Peter Jackson must solve to make The Hobbit” is that J.R.R. Tolkien’s narrative features absolutely no female characters at all. Zippo. Zilch. Nada. Not so much as a standoffish elven princess who could possibly be taken down off her pedestal and developed in a more fully rounded, fully involved character. So who will 16-year-old Saoirse Ronan be portraying in the film? Cinema Blend dug the tidbit of her casting out of a long, not-Hobbit-centric interview with Peter Jackson’s casting director Ros Hubbard, who offered no details whatsoever about why Ronan had been cast.

This one’s certainly a surprise. It turns out that Saoirse Ronan, star of Peter Jackson’s most recent film, the disastrous adaptation of The Lovely Bones, is taking on a part in his upcoming two-part prequel The Hobbit. We learned this from an interview that Itf (via CinemaBlend) conducted with the movie’s casting director Ros Hubbard.
The revelation is surprisingly off the cuff. She was aksed if her Irish heritage influenced the casting, with the interviewer bringing up the participation of Aidan Turner, James Nesbitt and Ronan. You can read her remark below:
“And working with Peter Jackson is like working with a family. So they’ll have a great time. Saoirse’s family will go too, everyone is very close and very loving on those sorts of jobs. It’s not like typical studio movies at all.”
So, there you have it. No word on who she’ll be playing,...
