The cast of Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth is getting more prominent as Domhnall Gleeson joins John Krasinski and Natalie Portman for the upcoming feature from Apple and Skydance Media. Scream VI writer James Vanderbilt pens this mythological project. It involves “two estranged siblings who partner on a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. They must use their knowledge of history to follow clues on an epic adventure that will change their lives…and possibly lead to immortality.” Apple, Skydance Media, Vinson Films, and Project X Entertainment will produce the movie. The script was a high priority at Skydance since they received Vanderbilt’s screenplay. It reportedly “blew execs away.” The production company was waiting for the right creative package to come along.
According to Deadline, “Hailing from a first-look partnership between Apple and Skydance Media, Fountain of Youth will be produced by Skydance’s David Ellison,...

“I would say ‘Veep’ absolutely put us on a path toward this project,” reflects Peter Huyck on how the Emmy-winning HBO political satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus led him and his creative partner Alex Gregory to their subsequent project, the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers.” Together, the duo created, executive produced, and wrote all five episodes of this retelling of Watergate, which was brought to them by David Bernad. He thought there was a “Coen brothers dark comedy” in the material and wanted the “Veep” writers to offer a “new take” on the infamous D.C. scandal. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Gregory points not only to “Veep,” but also to that show’s creator Armando Iannucci and his film “The Death of Stalin” as a major source of inspiration. “That was a horrific episode about a genocidal maniac, and it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen,...

The eligibility window for this year’s Emmys cycle closed May 31. The hanging episode rule has gone the way of Barry Berkman, which means this week’s TV awards contenders to watch are kind of an odd bunch: mostly episodes that aired earlier in the week or currently airing shows whose full seasons won’t be eligible. But you don’t care about that — you just want to know what shows are worth watching.
A nominee in 2022 for Best Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, the extremely memeable sketch comedy “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” returned to Netflix for its highly anticipated third season on May 30, making its six episodes eligible for this year’s awards cycle. The unpredictable series from Robinson and Zach Kanin earned the former the award for Best Short Form Actor in 2022 (the show lost to “Carpool Karaoke: The Series”). There is...

These days we’re much luckier, with most of the top US TV highlights dropping simultaneously or soon after on one of the big streamers, but there are still some American terrestrial TV gems that slip through the net.
We’ve kept our eyes peeled for you – so here are the top US shows that will soon be arriving in the UK, plus one we’re impatient to watch but which is still only available to purchase per-episode.

Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck's "White House Plumbers" started out as a broadly comedic dramatization of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President's bunglingly criminal efforts, but as the miniseries has dealt with the legitimately tragic dimensions of this inept operation, the laughs have grown fewer and fewer. Indeed, this week's episode, which concludes with the jarring crash of United Airlines Flight 553, occasionally takes on the eerie tone of Alan J. Pakula's "All the President's Men."
The Watergate break-in was so poorly orchestrated that it casts into doubt the numerous conspiracy theories that grew up around it or were drawn into it. Given E. Howard Hunt's CIA background and involvement in the Bay of Pigs, Gregory and Huyck have entertained his alleged connection to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This is intriguing, but, again, if Hunt was as much of an oaf as he...

Lena Headey is frustrated about the current state of politics. "We just need to advance," she tells Popsugar. "We need to see sense, not money. I don't know if that's ever gonna change."
Frustration with the political powers at large is certainly something that her "White House Plumbers" character, Dorothy Hunt, can relate to - albeit for different reasons. The real-life Dorothy was an ex-CIA operative who was married to E. Howard Hunt, one of the major drivers of the Watergate scandal. Dorothy never fully witnessed the fallout of her husband's crimes, though, as she died in a plane crash in 1972 while leaving Washington DC. Since her death, rumors about the level of her involvement in the efforts to steal classified information from the Democratic Party have marred Dorothy's legacy. White House Plumbers shouldn’t require a spoiler warning. The HBO miniseries is about the Watergate scandal. But, since it’s told from the perspective of Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), the five-episode satirical drama covers a ton of ground that the average person is likely coming upon for the first time.
“There are a lot of people who know Nixon resigned, maybe they’ve heard the word Watergate, maybe they only know ‘gate,’ like they’ve seen this-gate and that-gate. There’s an opportunity here to just let people know what President Nixon did. It’s a story where, maybe it’s been long enough that it’s time to remind people. But now, let’s go one step further,” said David Mandel, who directed all five episodes and is an executive producer alongside the show’s creators and writers,...

Let's take a brief trip through the looking glass, shall we?
There is not a more tantalizing mystery in United States history than the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Though the Warren Commission emphatically concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole gunman and acted alone, many people believe their investigation was either flawed or a full-scale cover-up. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists alleged an alliance between the Fidel Castro-led Cuban government and mobsters in the States. Louisiana District Attorney Jim Garrison believed Kennedy's murder was orchestrated by New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw and anti-Castro Cubans (who were still raw over the failed Bay of Pigs invasion). Everyone from Lyndon B. Johnson to Frank Sinatra has been linked in some way or another to the assassination.
The myriad of theories, many of which clumsily intersect with competing theories, tend to discredit each other. But it's understandable why people need...

“I didn’t think anyone would ever do a Watergate series, so I never thought to ask,” reflects David Mandel about one of the defining moments in American political history. But as it turns out, he recalls, “One day, I found out there was a Watergate series and the next thing I knew I was the director of it.” The Emmy Award-winning executive producer credits his longtime home HBO for backing the series “White House Plumbers” because “only they would make this show about two very dangerous guys in the 1970s who went to work for the President to basically break the law in the name of the law.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
While Mandel says he doesn’t “want anybody sympathizing” with the two criminals who masterminded the infamous Watergate break-ins — E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) — he does hope the series helps viewers understand them.

Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck's HBO miniseries "White House Plumbers" is a tonally audacious, behind-the-bungling tale of the men who botched the Watergate break-in and set in motion the demise of Richard M. Nixon's presidency. The series is focused on the two "masterminds" of the errant operation: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Paul Theroux). The five-episode series, directed by David Mandel (the former showrunner of "Veep"), is both broadly comedic and bruisingly tragic, as it must be.
What these men and their inept coconspirators carried out is easily the most egregious own-goal in the history of American politics. The recent passing of Harry Belafonte — and the viral proliferation of a clip featuring the iconic singer/actor/activist crooning “Day-o” in front of a boat packed with dancing pigs — was a reminder of how many stars of a certain generation were at their most relaxed and ebullient as participants on The Muppet Show.
Some 44 years after Belafonte did The Muppet Show, the powers that be at Disney and the Muppet Studio continue to go out of their way to find avenues for Muppet programming that inexplicably avoid just doing The Muppet Show for a new generation. There’s a willingness to fritter this priceless brand away on tangential projects that vanish quickly and forgettably instead of bringing the characters and the A-list stars who love them together in one spoof-and-song-driven space.

The Watergate scandal is one of the most infamous political events in American history, and it led to the resignation of a sitting U.S. President. The HBO drama “The Leftovers” (2014 – 2017) created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta remains arguably one of the most Emmys-overlooked shows of all time. The series received only one Emmy nomination during its three-season run, and not even for the universally acclaimed lead performances by actors Justin Theroux or Carrie Coon. The duo might have had bad luck back then, but they’re both returning to overtake the Emmys this year in the Movie/Limited Series acting categories.
The acting was undoubtedly one of the strongest and most compelling assets of “The Leftovers.” The chief of police, Kevin Garvey, who goes on different levels of mental exploration, was Theroux’s first main TV protagonist role. Coon started off the series as a supporting character — grieving mother and wife Nora Durst — in season 1. She continued as the co-lead opposite Theroux until the end of the series. Despite their powerful presence on screen,...

This article contains details from real life events that will likely spoil upcoming episodes of HBO’s White House Plumbers.
Having learned most of what I know about the Watergate scandal from Mad magazine, it took me a while to realize White House Plumbers is a satire. The five-part HBO series telling the true story of the secret unit inside President Richard M. Nixon’s White House begins with The New York Times, not necessarily renowned for its comedic prowess. The story got the paper labeled as scions of “liberal media,” another term seemingly rendered spoof by the stringent journalistic standards of the periodical. The White House Plumbers pulled out their tools to stop the leaking of the Pentagon Papers, and hit a water main. It appears predestined they would get clogged at a place called the Watergate.
The limited series begins with a disclaimer warning none of the names...

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "White House Plumbers."
Countless pieces of media dedicated to the Watergate scandal have scrutinized the various facets of the infamous series of break-ins (and cover-ups) perpetrated by the Nixon administration. From the taut, thrilling "All the President's Men" to the chaotic satirical comedy "Dick," Watergate has been dramatized in various tints and shades, and the HBO limited series, "White House Plumbers," intends to continue this tradition. The show's attempts at comedy are half-decent — the colorful characters involved in the (repeated) attempted break-in into the National Committee offices are rightfully portrayed as bumbling clowns with massive egos, but the results are uneven, and not as entertaining as it intends to be. However, "White House Plumbers" does excel in capturing the utterly ridiculous chaos of the botched break-ins from the get-go, exposing the continued incompetence of the Plumbers that eventually led to the downfall of President Richard M. Nixon.

This article contains spoilers for "White House Plumbers."The strangest thing about the latest HBO prestige drama is that it's not actually much of a drama at all. "White House Plumbers," a new miniseries starring Justin Theroux and Woody Harrelson that debuted this week, is actually a political satire from the minds of "Veep" writers Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck. But while "Veep" was funny, "White House Plumbers" is so far just "funny," a show with a first episode that takes weird, big comedic swings that mostly — and sometimes painfully — miss.
The dissonance between what "White House Plumbers" seems to be trying to do and what it's actually doing is apparent from very early on. In the cold open of its first episode, the show presents a group of men who seem to be about to pull off the Watergate break-in, a historic attempted wiretapping of a Washington D.C.

For seven seasons, “Veep” painted a portrait of the Washington elite as unflattering as it was accurate. Our nation’s capital, the satire argued, is filled with neither dedicated public servants nor savvy political operators, but bumbling sycophants whose self-importance far outstrips their actual abilities. “White House Plumbers,” the new HBO limited series, extends that argument from fictional characters to actual history. Created by “Veep” writers Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory and directed by David Mandel, the “Seinfeld” alum who ran “Veep” after the departure of Armando Iannucci, “White House Plumbers” charts the awkward bromance of two men who tried and failed to break into the Watergate Hotel. The result is a shotgun marriage of “Step Brothers” and “Slow Burn.”

‘White House Plumbers’ Review: Woody Harrelson & Justin Theroux Make Fine Stooges in Watergate Farce
Just before G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) embarks on his very public trial for conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping — all tied to the 1972 Watergate scandal — his wife, Fran (Judy Greer), stops him outside the courthouse. “Are you sure you don’t want me to be there?” she asks her husband. “Oh, no, no, no,” Liddy replies. “I am going to act like a jackass — piss off the prosecution, force a few errors, send the whole thing to appeals, and get it all thrown out. If I see you in the gallery, I might be forced to remember my manners.”
Liddy’s trial prep is but one of many, many bad plans the former FBI agent cooks up over the course of “White House Plumbers,” HBO’s five-part limited series about the inept burglars behind the infamous Watergate break-in. The legacy of the Watergate break-in is one of virulent distrust in the American government, and in some cases aggressive empowerment of shady tactics from the American government. Our media has been enraptured with the story for decades, as an example of how head-and-shoulders-down journalism work can take down the tyrannical powers that be, from Alan J. Paluka’s “All the President’s Men” to Ron Howard’s “Frost/Nixon.”
But now, Hollywood has shifted to depictions from within the Watergate scandal. Just one year after the limited series “Gaslit,” we have a new five-episode limited series entitled “White House Plumbers.” And the results are sloppy, much like the actual Watergate break-in.
The primary White House Plumbers — the special investigation unit tasked to “plug leaks” emitting from the White House and protect President Richard Nixon’s power by any means necessary — are the gruff E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and the...

Think All the President’s Idiots. Turning the Watergate scandal into a slapstick tragicomedy isn’t nearly as novel a notion as White House Plumbers, HBO’s cartoonishly acted five-part docu-dramedy, seems to think it is. This latest retelling zooms in on the chief bumblers — er, “plumbers” — who orchestrated the botched break-in that took down the 1970s Nixon administration: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux). These former and very aggrieved CIA and FBI agents, respectively, see themselves as democracy’s champions during Nixon’s re-election campaign when they’re hired to oversee the plotting of dirty tricks that invariably backfire. “Is any of this nickel-and-dime cloak and dagger stuff necessary?” wonders Hunt’s wife, ...

Apple TV+ premieres Silo this week, which is a book-to-screen adaptation I can highly recommend. The books were incredible, creating a world unlike anything you've ever experienced, and the series brings it to life with stunning detail.
Fatal Attraction comes to Paramount+, and we finally see the appeal of having more time with a beloved IP, as the fleshed-out story opens a lot of storytelling opportunities.
See what else is coming this week and what finales to keep an eye on below.

Erin Cahill and Marco Grazzini star in a new Hallmark movie about making a name for yourself, forgiving past mistakes, and moving forward.
In this one, a publicist helps a pitcher for the New York Mets – and her boyfriend from high school – find his way back to the game and her heart.
Check out a preview for the movie below.

As a piece of history, the Watergate scandal is a daunting narrative smorgasbord.
There were too many characters in this madcap dramedy and they almost all beggar belief — one outlandish caricature after another — except that they’re all real. It’s a problem that Hollywood has solved by telling the Watergate story over and over again, with the spotlight on a different principal within the burgeoning fiasco each time. Maybe there are commonalities between Watergate recountings — the security guard removing the tape from an illicitly opened door has become the Murder of Bruce Wayne’s Parents of 20th century American history — but with an ever-changing prism, it should be possible to never come away with a repeated perspective.
Maybe you have All the President’s Men on one, very serious, end of the spectrum and Dick on another, very silly, end of the spectrum and every other variation looking for tonal traction in between.

One of the biggest puzzle pieces of the spring television season recently fit into place with the announcement that the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers” will debut on Monday, May 1. From three of the comedic minds behind the Emmy-winning “Veep” — David Mandel, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck — this five-part political thriller and satire explores the events of the Watergate break-in from vantage point of two of its masterminds: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux).
In the full trailer, Howard’s wife Dorothy, played by Lena Headey, declares the scheme to re-elect President Richard Nixon by bugging their opponents at the Democratic National Committee, “The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” The series begins with the White House employing Hunt and Liddy to investigate the leak of the Pentagon Papers and zeroes in on their subsequent, haphazard schemes to break into the DNC offices; the...

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.

HBO’s White House Plumbers is born out of a simple truth: that the events that occurred at the Watergate Office Building on June 17, 1972, while accounting for one of the most seismic political scandals in American history, were profoundly stupid. By walking us through each step in the planning, execution, and attempted cover-up of the operation, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s five-part limited series—based on Egil and Matthew Krogh’s 2007 book Integrity—effectively underlines just how braindead the whole thing was, even as it struggles to wring many laughs from its depiction of the events.
“No names have been changed to protect the innocent, because nearly everyone was found guilty” reads the opening title card, accompanied by a jazzy, Ocean’s Eleven-esque number as our suited-and-booted burglars stride confidently into the Watergate building. They almost immediately encounter a door that they’re unable to unlock and have no choice but to retreat.

When it came to Watergate, it wasn't the crime, it was the coverup. Had Richard Nixon and his men not covered up the White House's involvement in the break-in — and had Nixon not recorded so many conversations — the president might have survived. Indeed, it's strange to look back at the Watergate affair and think that such a small, petty crime — a "third-rate burglary," in Nixon's own words — could bring down a president, especially in this modern age when politicians are wildly, flagrantly corrupt and suffer almost no consequences.
The story of Watergate and its aftermath has been covered frequently in film and TV, most notably in "All the President's Men." Now, HBO's "White House Plumbers" takes us back to the '70s and focuses on the men who made it happen — the men who, through their own ineptitude, helped destroy Richard Nixon, a president they professed to love. Most are familiar with the Watergate scandal: several burglars were arrested at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters on June 17, 1972; President Richard Nixon’s administration attempted to cover up its involvement in the break-in; and the political crime ultimately led to Nixon’s resignation.
But who were the masterminds behind the Watergate scandal? Their perspectives are revealed in the upcoming HBO limited series, “White House Plumbers.”
“There’s so many different versions, and the one thing that happens in all these versions is the same scene right at the beginning; you see the guys breaking in with flashlights, and then you hear there was an arrest at the Watergate Hotel, or something like that. And that’s it — you never hear about those guys or see them again,” director David Mandel told Variety at the New York premiere of “White House Plumbers” on Monday night. “This is the story about...

HBO’s five-part limited series “White House Plumbers” has been confirmed for a May 1 launch date, which means Lena Headey could have another shot at finally ascending the Emmy throne.
Headey is arguably overdue for an Emmy win after being paid dust for her iconic portrayal of Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones.” She received five — and to date her only — nominations for the hit fantasy series, in the drama supporting actress category, but was denied the crown at every turn. Unfortunately for her and the rest of the “Thrones” cast, the acting branch of the TV academy didn’t care to reward the four-time Best Drama Series champ outside of Peter Dinklage, whose fan-favorite turn as Tyrion Lannister earned him Best Drama Supporting Actor bids for all eight seasons and a record four statuettes. It also didn’t help Headey that her character, the ice-cold, cunning ruler of the Seven Kingdoms,...

The White House Plumbers (accidentally) took down the presidency, but can Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux take down their Emmy competition? The “White House Plumbers” stars are both contending in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor, but only Harrelson is currently predicted to earn a nomination at the moment, sitting in fourth place, while Theroux is in ninth. If you’re predicting just one of them, you might want to reconsider that because this category is kinder to double noms than you might think.
Since 2000, there have been 10 projects that have fielded a pair of nominees in limited series/TV movie actor. And half of them hailed from HBO, home to “White House Plumbers” as well. In 2004, “Something the Lord Made” nabbed bids for Mos Def and Alan Rickman. Four years later, “Recount” stars Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson faced off. HBO has released the official trailer for its five-episode limited series “White House Plumbers,” set to debut on May 1. The series will take viewers on a “behind-the-scenes” look of the Watergate scandal, starring Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux). Set in 1971, both Hunt and Liddy have just been hired by the White House to investigate the Pentagon Papers leak when they end up landing on the committee to re-elect the president. “White House Plumbers” aims to pull back the curtain to the events that led up to one of America’s most infamous political crimes.

"You tell those spine-less, two-faced politicians - loyalty is a two-way street!" HBO has debuted the full-length official trailer for White House Plumbers, making fun of the inside job mistakes during Watergate from the perspective of Nixon's lackeys. It looks like good fun, mocking the idiocy of people in Washington DC. The White House Plumbers tells the story of how Nixon's own political saboteurs and the Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect. The cast also includes Domhnall Gleeson, Kiernan Shipka, Ike Barinholtz, Yul Vazquez, David Krumholtz, and Lena Headey. A superb cast with some wickedly accurate political satire make this a must watch. This has the humor of The Nice Guys with the stupidity of the Nixon cabinet, which should make for some quality HBO entertainment. Have fun. // Continue Reading ›...

Game of Thrones star Lena Headey is headed west — specifically, to the Oregon of the 1850s — for her next TV series.
Headey will star in The Abandons, a western from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. The show, which received a straight-to-series order in October 2022, follows a group of outlier families in 1850s Oregon who “pursue their Manifest Destiny [while] a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out,” per the show’s description.
Headey, who earned five Emmy nominations for her role as Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, will play Fiona, the head of an adoptive family. The character description reads, “a strong, devout matriarch who, unable to have her own children, took in four orphans to create her own family. Driven by a higher purpose — and a strong-willed Irish temper — her faith and love for her family trump all.”

Move over, Felix and Oscar. True Detective’s Woody Harrelson and The Leftovers’ Justin Theroux are a mismatched delight as philandering former CIA agent E. Howard Hunt and onetime FBI guy/dedicated family man G. Gordon Liddy in HBO‘s upcoming White House Plumbers. They were President Richard Nixon’s political saboteurs (originally hired to stop leaks) and masterminds of the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate building that inadvertently unseated their Republican boss. “Woody leans into the tragedy of Hunt. Justin is Liddy,” says director-executive producer David Mandel, who was a writer on the bitingly funny HBO political sitcom Veep. “Their characters are opposites, but off set, the [actors] would mess with and tease each other. That created this bromance.” Harrelson and Theroux are clearly having a blast in every second of this five-parter. It begins before the break-in with both middle-aged men yearning to be D.C. power players.

Woody Harrelson seems generally confused as he prepares to return as host for Saturday Night Live.
The star of HBO’s upcoming White House Plumbers is set to lead the NBC comedy series’ Feb. 25 episode, during which he’ll enter the Five-Timers Club after four previous hosting stints, most recently in September 2019. He’ll be joined by musical guest Jack White, who will similarly mark his fifth time performing on the show.
In a video released Wednesday, Harrelson walks the hallowed halls of Studio 8H while admiring photos of previous hosts on the wall. The actor seems to be mistaken about a few of their names and refers to Matthew McConaughey simply as “my weed guy.”
Later, the host notices featured player Devon Walker, who realizes that Harrelson’s inner monologue is actually coming from a boombox he’s carrying, as the Cheers alum has apparently prerecorded everything he is planning to say.
