Cynthia Weil, a Grammy-winning lyricist of notable range and endurance who enjoyed a decades-long partnership with husband Barry Mann and helped write “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”, “On Broadway”, “Walking in the Rain” and dozens of other hits, has died at age 82.
Weil’s daughter, Dr. Jenn Mann, said that the songwriter died Thursday at her home in Beverly Hills, California, “surrounded by her family.” Mann, the couple’s only child, declined to cite a specific cause of death.
Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, married in 1961, were one of popular music’s most successful teams, part of a remarkable ensemble recruited by impresarios Don Kirshner and Al Nevins and based in Manhattan’s Brill Building neighborhood, a few blocks from Times Square. With such hit-making combinations as Carole King and Gerry Goffin and Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, the Brill Building song factory turned out many of the biggest...

Cynthia Weil, the celebrated songwriter who helped craft timeless hits like the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” the Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” and Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire,” died Thursday, June 1. She was 82.
Weil’s daughter, Jenn Mann, confirmed her death, though no cause was given. “My mother, Cynthia Weil, was the greatest mother, grandmother and wife our family could ever ask for,” Mann said. “She was my best friend, confidant, and my partner in crime and an idol and trailblazer for women in music.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Season 22 of The Voice is a tricky-ass one. On one hand, we’ve got a handful of seriously talented contestants. On the other — as always, I suppose — we have no guarantee that our fellow viewers will vote through the seriously talented ones (like Team Camila Cabello’s Devix, who I already miss) instead of just, say, the cute one (Team Blake Shelton’s Brayden Lape) or the country one (Team Blake’s Bryce Leatherwood).
Nonetheless, there was nothing for the Top 10 to do Monday but their best, in hopes of...

Three of this year’s Oscar nominated tunes were penned by Black songwriters: Celeste reaped a bid (along with Daniel Pemberton) for “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago”; D’Mile, recent Grammy champ H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas collaborated on “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”; and supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was cited with Nashville based singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth for “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami.”
The first Black tunesmith to contend for Best Original Song at the Oscars was Quincy Jones who was nominated in 1967 (alongside lyricist Bob Russell) for “The Eyes of Love” from the long-forgotten “Banning.” (Jones earned the first of his four score Oscar nominations that same year for “In Cold Blood.”) He and Russell reaped another bid the following year for the title tune from “For Love of Ivy.” His last nomination to date was in 1985 for...

In 1989, Quincy Jones had already amassed one of the most enviable discographies in pop history, playing, writing, arranging, or producing for Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Lesley Gore, The Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Patti Austin, and Michael Jackson.
But the legendary polymath still had more to do — Jones set out to create an album that “represents everything I have worked for after 40 years,” according to The Billboard Book of Number One R&b Hits. That turned into Back on the Block, which spawned one of the last hits in Jones’ hit-filled...

Many contemporary albums arrive with less than a week’s notice, but Jhene Aiko started to roll-out her new full-length, Chilombo, months ago. She released four different tracks to stoke anticipation, only to find that when the album finally came out March 6, a brand new song immediately supplanted the lead singles as a fan-favorite. “B.S.”, a casually vengeful back-and-forth with another R&b singer, H.E.R., quickly became Aiko’s highest-charting track.
Collaborations like this one seem to account for more and more of R&b’s big hits recently.

Among the other things Eddie Murphy’s rapturously received new comedy has going for it, “Dolemite Is My Name” might be the movie musical of the year, in spirit, if not wholly in form. At least, there are a few sequences where its real-life protagonist, comedian/musician/actor Rudy Ray Moore, breaks into a kind of proto-hip-hop performance mode. The rest of the movie has nearly wall-to-wall music, whether it’s the ‘70s hits of Marvin Gaye and Sly & the Family Stone or an original score that harks back to the blaxploitation era’s funk-filled glory days.
Marrying music and movies comes naturally to director Craig Brewer, who offered a more contemporary take on hip-hop with “Hustle & Flow,” and his house composer, fellow Memphis native Scott Bomar, a founder of the neo-soul group the Bo-Keys. Plus, you’d be hard-pressed to find screenwriter-producers who know their ‘70s music better...

An upcoming Quincy Jones orchestral show in London, originally billed as a performance of three Michael Jackson albums, has been changed to “a celebration of ’80s music.”
The June 23rd concert at the O2 Arena was initially announced in February as “Quincy Jones Presents Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad,” with a live symphony orchestra and several unnamed guest stars, Variety reports.
The title change comes after the release of and subsequent controversy surrounding the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, in which two men detailed the alleged childhood sexual abuse they were subjected to by Jackson.

While Academy Awards producers have strived for a much shorter ceremony this year, the annual “In Memoriam” segment will definitely remain. In fact this moment on Sunday’s 2019 event should be extra classy since Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Philharmonic will be performing as part of the tribute.

Quincy Jones is traditionally viewed as the mastermind behind the apex of all charity singles, but it was actually Harry Belafonte who instigated the idea in the wake of Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Seeking to make a star-studded Yankee equivalent to alleviate the Ethiopian famine, Belafonte contacted entertainment manager and fellow activist Ken Kragen, who drafted clients Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers, as well as Stevie Wonder. But the production escalated once Jones and his extensive Rolodex were brought into the mix. He called in...

Michel Legrand, who died in Paris Saturday at the age of 86, was among the most renowned film composers and songwriters of our time. He won three Oscars and five Grammys, and many of his songs have entered the pantheon as among the greatest of the 20th century. Here are 10 great film music moments from the career of this French genius:
1. “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” (1964). The close collaboration of Legrand and filmmaker Jacques Demy produced this stunning, all-sung romantic drama about a star-crossed couple. It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and ultimately earned five Oscar nominations (three of them for the score). “I Will Wait for You” was the biggest song hit that emerged and quickly became a standard:
2. “The Young Girls of Rochefort” (1967). Legrand and Demy reunited for this splashy, colorful musical that added Americans Gene Kelly and George Chakiris to the usual French cast. The tuneful score...

“Black-ish” with an upper-case B is an African-American sitcom loved by both black and white viewers. But “black-ish” with a lower-case b doesn’t always fly with African-Americans when it comes to their tunes.
In both forms, the word refers to a lack of black cred, whether it’s for talking too white, acting too white, or being too white, accusations Drake haters have hurled at the rapper since he hit the hip hop scene. Some in the African-American community criticize him for making music that’s as much pop as hip hop and promoting a soft image. In other words, he’s not “black” enough.
Still, Drake is arguably the most successful rap star of the past five years. On June 29, his fifth studio album “Scorpion” set a Spotify record for the highest number of global streams in a single day. Over the course of the sprawling 25-track double album,...

Anyone familiar with Ian McShane’s Golden Globe winning role as the profanity-spewing, hard drinking Al Swearengen on HBO’s "Deadwood" shouldn't be remotely surprised that intense, gritty characters have been Ian McShane’s bread and butter for quite some time. Surely his knack for bringing swarthy, murderous types to life has aided him in being cast as the embittered dwarf king Beith in "Snow White and the Huntsman" and his latest curmudgeonly role as King Brahmwell in "Jack the Giant Slayer."
However, a careful look at McShane's decades-long career reveals a few nuggets of evidence that it isn't quite all malevolence and danger behind those beady eyes. Could it be possible that all of these latter-day seething character roles are actually hiding the longing, romantic heart of a true ladies' man?
Perhaps the answer lies not in the man’s movies, but in his music. Make no mistake, the...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!

Suburgatory 1.22 "The Motherload" Review
There are basically two types of season finales that can put into play, depending on a variety of factors. The first type is the clean finale, one that ties up loose ends, corrects mistakes, and generally finds each of the main characters in a pretty favorable place going forward. It might not make for the most compelling of television, but a clean finale is best utilized when a show is truly on the bubble or knowingly ending once and for all. A bubble show ending cleanly calms the inevitable firestorm of "Save Our Show" campaigns that pop up every May, while a show ending for good can spend its final moments basking in the happy and celebrating the characters we've all grown to love. Whereas a messy finale (like Suburgatory), with no (real) conclusions and little warm-and-fuzzy moments to speak of, leaves things hanging until next season,...

We were already excited about next week's first season finale of ABC's Suburgatory because James Ingram is going to be on it singing 100 Ways, and who doesn't love James Ingram (though, if we're being honest, "Yah Mo B There," with Michael McDonald, would have been even cooler.) Now, however, Vulture has discovered there's another reason to check out Wednesday's episode. Spoiler alert: Yakult, the canine companion of Dallas (Cheryl Hines), is going to speak . What's more, Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek has landed a very well-known celeb to give voice to this beloved creature: Whoopi Goldberg.Without getting into too much detail, the Mother's Day-themed finale features a subplot in which Dallas ends up having a hallucination in which Yakult ("named after the probiotic," Kapnek notes) begins to speak out loud. Kapnek says fans of the show will quickly get the logic behind casting Goldberg as Yakult's alter-ego. "We all...

Note: Our regular "American Idol" recapper Laura Prudom was unable to watch on Mar. 14. She will be back tomorrow to bring you her expert "Idol"-pertise. In the meanwhile, please excuse my lack of musical knowledge and let's just mock Steven Tyler's hat, shall we?
Within a minute of seeing Ryan Seacrest emerge from a dust cloud and say "This [long pause] is 'American Idol,'" I remember why I haven't been able to stomach this show for quite sometime. Seacrest doesn't hesitate to bring up the Jermaine Jones drama, though I have a sneaking suspicion we won't actually find out what went down until the last two minutes of these next two hours.
However, in an attempt to see the glass half full, I'm harping on the fact that tonight is "Year You Were Born Night," which means two things. 1) Adorable baby pictures and 2) Songs from my youth since these contestants are all fetuses.

A Pre-Grammy Conversation with Bob Clearmountain
Mike Ragogna: Bob, here at the Grammys watching over the sonics of the Bruce Springsteen segment. What are some of the things you look out for when it comes to the right mix on Bruce?
Bob Clearmountain: The thing with Bruce, and any artist like Bruce, is that the most important thing is the song, getting across the meaning and the character of the song. Bruce is almost like an actor in that he creates a character for each of his songs. He wants to make sure that the narrative of the song comes across. It's no different here than it is with making records. There has to be no disconnect between that character you create and the narrative. Basically, that's what I look for. The rest of it is all making it sound good and as exciting as possible. The song he's...

Ah, the 1980s. Big hair, flashy clothes, and that new TV channel that only shows music videos. Exploitation films too were changing. Gone were the Excorsist- and Omen-inspired horror films of the 70s. Biker movies were passe. And socially relevant nurse and teacher dramas were being replaced by teen comedies and a new type of scary movie: the slasher film. In 1985, New World Pictures released Out Of Control, a somewhat strange combination of Lord Of The Flies and a John Hughes movie that is harder to classify. In some ways the perfect drive-in movie, Out Of Control contains violent action, teen romance, sex, nudity, and pop music. But there is an undercurrent of weirdness to the film that, intentional or not, implies some deeper meaning behind the exploitive aspects and makes it interesting to watch for its details. There were a handful of things we could have celebrated this morning. After all, today is the birthday of Charlie and Craig Reid (better known as the Proclaimers, who scored one of the biggest one hit wonders of all time with "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"). Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante will also be blowing out candles today, as he turns 40 years old (hopefully he celebrates with a little "Californication"). But just as we did last week, today we celebrate Michael Jackson's ascent to superstardom.
On this day in 1983, "Billie Jean" found itself at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. The second single from Thriller bounded over Patti Austin and James Ingram's "Baby, Come to Me" to take the top spot, where it stayed for seven weeks before being ousted by (of all things) "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners. Another song remake is underway. After Michael Jackson's "We Are the World" as well as R.E.M.'s "Everbody Hurts" got the treatment for Haitian Relief effort and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was confirmed to be remixed by Mary J. For this project, Jermaine tags the likes of Usher, Robin Thicke, Tyrese Gibson and Trey Songz. But, this singer/producer decides to keep the original chorus of the 1989 song which is sung by Barry White.
