Update: The House of Representatives overwhelmingly rejected Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, a move that would have sent the chamber into another round of chaos.
Greene’s motion to oust Johnson was tabled 359-43, with seven members voting present. Eleven Republicans and 32 Democrats voted against sidelining the motion.
The vote was a resounding defeat for Greene, who had insisted that she had substantial support for her effort.
CNN and MSNBC did extensive coverage of the vote, but Fox News largely stuck with The Five, doing a more complete update on Special Report at 6 p.m. Et.
That’s quite a contrast to October, when the House rejected efforts to table a resolution to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He then was removed as speaker, with 208 Democrats joining with eight Republicans.
That led to a protracted effort to find a successor who could amass a majority to become the next speaker.

Updated, with additional details from the hearing: The three major news networks largely bypassed live coverage of the latest chapter in a House GOP-led inquiry of whether to impeach President Joe Biden.
That in and of itself was a sign of just how much the effort has been losing steam, even among Republican lawmakers.
The House Oversight hearing, titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office,” featured Tony Bobulinski a former associate of Hunter Biden. Also testifying, albeit remotely, was Jason Galanis, another associate, who is in an Alabama prison serving a sentence for securities fraud.
Also testifying, as a Democratic witness, was Lev Parnas, a former associate of Rudy Giuliani. Parnas said that Giuliani, in advance of the 2020 presidential election, trafficked in false claims that the Biden’s were involved in a Ukrainian corruption scheme, and that the Russians were behind the disinformation effort.

Donald Trump appeared at a rally hosted by super Pac Buckeye Values in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday supporting Bernie Moreno, the Senate candidate vying for the GOP primary who Trump endorsed.
Moreno is competing with state Senator Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank Larose in the Republican primary, the winner of which will go head-to-head against Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown. Brown is one of the two Democrats (the other is Montana Democrat Jon Tester) running for reelection in red states. The two races will be pivotal in determining which party controls the Senate.

Republicans are trying to spin the Biden impeachment inquiry forward after an hours-long deposition with his son Hunter Biden on Wednesday. It’s proving difficult, as the closed-door hearing doesn’t seem to have yielded many revelatory details.
Some Republicans are even conceding that Biden performed well under questioning. “I think when the transcript comes out, it’s gonna read well for him, because they did a great job prepping,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) told Fox News host Harris Faulkner Thursday.

Pay no attention to the discredited informant facing prison time.
GOP officials were scrambling Wednesday after Alexander Smirnov, a key witness in the impeachment proceedings against President Biden, was accused of being informed by Russian intelligence.
Smirnov was arrested last Thursday after Special Counsel David Weiss charged him on suspicion of providing the FBI with fraudulent information. Smirnov, an FBI informant for over a decade, was further discredited after a DOJ report Tuesday indicated he was not only lying to the FBI about Biden, but had “contacts with multiple foreign intelligence agencies.

The prosecutor overseeing the Hunter Biden investigation last week indicted a key witness in the GOP’s case against Hunter Biden, Alexander Smirnov, for lying to the FBI. But Rep. Mike Turner, GOP chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, wants the Republican impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden regarding his son’s business dealings to continue to “its natural conclusion,” even though Rep. Jim Jordan recently said that “the most corroborating evidence” against the Bidens stems from Smirnov’s claims.
Turner appeared on Sunday’s Meet the Press where host Kristen Welker asked him about Smirnov.

House Republican leader, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York), rescinded her endorsement from Craig Riedel, a House of GOP candidate, due to the criticisms he made against former President Donald Trump.
On January 4, Stefanik announced on X that she would no longer endorse Riedel.
“Earlier this week, I informed Craig Riedel (Ohio-9) that I will be withdrawing my endorsement,” she wrote. “I was very disappointed in his inappropriate comments regarding President Trump.”
“As we begin 2024, my focus is on ensuring we nominate the strongest candidates on the ballot who are committed to electing President Trump this November and expanding our House GOP Majority,” Stefanik declared.
Riedel is a GOP former state representative running for Congress.
He made it clear in an audio recording that he would not endorse Trump and noted that his habit of insulting others does not seem presidential.
The recording was posted by the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk on X.

On December 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a speech at this year’s National Association of Christian Lawmakers gala.
During his speech, he thanked the event’s organizers for not inviting any reporters, though it has not been made clear if he knew that the event’s organizer would record and post a video of the gala on his Facebook page.
“I’ll tell you a secret since the media’s not here,” Johnson told them.
His secret was that he had many conversations with God in the lead-up to the speaker role with which he was anointed.
“The Lord impressed upon my heart a few weeks before this happened that something was going to occur,” he said. “And the Lord very specifically told me in my prayers to prepare but to wait. I had this sense that we were going to come to a Red Sea moment in our...

Hunter Biden took House Republicans to task on Wednesday, defying a subpoena for closed-door testimony and instead delivering a statement outside the Capitol decrying the party’s efforts to impeach his father, President Joe Biden.
In November, Republicans subpoenaed Hunter, ordering him to appear before members of Congress to answer questions in a closed-door setting. Biden rejected the demand despite threats to hold him in contempt of Congress, instead offering to testify before the committee in a public setting, where his statements would not be subject to cherry-picking and selective releases by the GOP.

A documentary film centered on the Ohio State University (Osu) sexual abuse scandal is currently in production and aims to bring renewed attention to the alleged role of then-osu coach and current right-wing Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, agreed to testify in a public hearing before the House Oversight Committee. Republicans immediately shot him down.
According to a Tuesday letter addressed to committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), Biden agreed to testify before the committee on Dec. 13 — as long as the hearing was public. In the letter, Biden’s attorneys quoted Comer’s own demand, issued in November, that given Biden’s “willingness to address this investigation publicly up to this point, we would expect him to be willing to testify before Congress.

Voters have delivered yet another resounding blow to the Republican myth that Americans want less bodily autonomy and individual freedom is what the people actually want. Tuesday’s elections saw the passage of a pro-choice ballot measure in Ohio, the failure of GOP efforts to oust Kentucky’s Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, and an overall lackluster performance by Republicans that shows the party has some work to do before 2024.

On Friday, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was nominated by the House GOP caucus to replace Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House – third in line to the presidency. He was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
But a cloud hangs over Jordan. He has been accused of failing to report abuse at Ohio State University, where he worked as an assistant wrestling coach from 1987 to 1995.
An upcoming documentary about abuse at Ohio State — directed by and starring George Clooney for HBO — may draw more attention to the scandal and prompt more questions about Jordan’s involvement.
Though Jordan has repeatedly denied knowing about the allegations against Dr. Richard Strauss, who allegedly abused at least 177 male students at the university between 1979 and 1996, former wrestlers have claimed that Jordan was present when players spoke about Strauss, who died by suicide in 2005.

Update, 1:51 p.m. Pt: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) won the GOP nomination to become the next House Speaker, but he still appeared to be a ways away from securing a majority.
Jordan got 124 votes in secret balloting this afternoon, to 81 for Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga), according to Punchbowl News and other outlets. Scott got into the race at the last minute earlier today.
Jordan needs 217 votes to win the speakership, although that threshold may change if lawmakers are absent. Jordan requested another secret ballot to see if members would back him in a public vote on the floor of the House, but the vote was 152-55, still far short.
“He’ll get there,” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week, told CNN’s Manu Raju as he exited the GOP conference meeting.
McCarthy said that Jordan has to “just sit down and talk” to the holdouts.

Stephen Colbert has a good idea of what went on during the “therapy session” that took place between roughly 150 lawmakers earlier this week.
The closed-doors meeting took place Monday, two days before the planned vote. Multiple GOP lawmakers described the meeting as “mostly civil, yet cathartic,” according to Politico. However, the meeting ended with House Republicans no closer to agreeing on who should replace Kevin McCarty as Speaker of the House after his recent ousting.

As congress continues to search for a replacement House Speaker, two frontrunners emerged last week, in the form of Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Steve Scalise. Both options were pretty bleak for John Oliver, especially considering the latter candidate has previously likened himself to the former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
To kick off his second episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver immediately got into Kevin McCarthy’s ouster, first poking fun at Patrick McHenry, who is filling the role in the interim.
Oliver joked that he looks like “Patton Oswalt as a ventriloquist dummy” and, like most of the late night hosts did this week, had a laugh at how hard McHenry slammed the gavel to adjourn the House after McCarthy was booted. The late night host then turned his attention to Jordan and Scalise, pointing out that Scalise was once equated to “David Duke without the baggage.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton blasted supporters of former President Donald Trump, particularly in the wake of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
“Maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members… and sadly, so many of those extremists, those Maga extremists, take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure,” she told CNN. “He’s only in it for himself.”
While Clinton predicts that Trump will likely be the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, she believes Joe Biden will be able to beat him a second time.
In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Clinton said, “One will wreck our democracy. One violates the law on a regular basis. One appeals to the worst in our collective psyche. The other gets things done… Why is that a hard choice?”
She also commented on the current Republican leadership race in the House of Representatives,...

MSNBC host Chris Hayes unpacked the news that Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan for speaker of the House on Friday night, explaining how Jordan as speaker would be a “near-worst-case scenario” in the wake of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s ouster.
As the Republican party now scrambles to fill the speaker of the House role after this week’s vote to expel McCarthy, Donald Trump – the heavy favorite to win the Republican nomination for president in the 2024 election who is also under four indictments – endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan on Friday. But on Friday’s “All In,” Hayes explained why Jordan would be a “proxy” for Trump.
“A vote for Jordan from any Republican, but especially from vulnerable members, is a vote for a Maga extremist. It is a proxy vote for Donald Trump. Donald Trump’s anointed him. Heck, it’s a vote for Donald Trump and Matt Gaetz,...

Update: Fox News’ Bret Baier said that the planned televised joint interview on Monday with speaker of the House contenders is off, after pushback from other lawmakers.

He said that he is still planning to bring his Special Report to Capitol Hill on Monday with different guests.
Baier said that on Thursday, Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan had said that they would participate. The plans were for a third congressman, Kevin Hern, to participate as well, with the idea that he will have declared by that he was running for speaker by the time the event was announced on Special Report on Friday evening.

A contingent of Republicans is attempting to raise the threshold of support needed within the GOP caucus before a candidate’s nomination as House Speaker can be brought to a floor vote.
Following Tuesday’s ouster of Speaker Kevin McCarthy, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and a small cohort of allies, Republicans are seeking to avoid another public display of GOP disunity. On Friday, 12 GOP representatives officially called for a meeting to consider “an amendment to House Republican Conference Rules to temporarily raise the threshold needed to elect a Speaker.

Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan in the race to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. In his endorsement, the former president largely skipped over highlighting Jordan’s record in government, instead choosing to laud his achievements as a collegiate wrestler.
“Congressman Jim Jordan has been a Star long before making his very successful journey to Washington, D.C.,” Trump wrote early Friday morning on Truth Social.
“So much is learned from sports, and Jim was a master!” Trump added, before diving into a crash...

Donald Trump has declared that if needed, he would consider serving as Speaker of the House for a “short period of time” as Republicans work to elect a new House Speaker to replace Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted Tuesday.
Multiple outlets previously reported the former president was mulling a trip to the Capitol ahead of a vote, amid calls from loyalists within the lower chamber. A source familiar with Trump’s recent private discussions told Rolling Stone that Trump has said that he’s open to the possibility of a speakership run.

Donald Trump is considering making a trip to the Capitol amid calls from loyalists within the lower chamber for him to assume the position of House Speaker. Such a visit would be the first time the former president has visited the building since a mob of his supporters breached it in a violent riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
Multiple outlets reported on Thursday that the former president is mulling a trip next week ahead of a vote, with Politico noting that he is open to pitching himself as a candidate, citing a Republican familiar with internal discussions.

The office of House Speaker is officially empty, and the Republican Party is in a state of chaos.
On Tuesday, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) became the first House Speaker ever to be fired from the position. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) brought a motion to oust him on Monday, and then he and seven other Republicans voted to ditch the California congressman a day later. The rest of the party was not happy, and in some cases visibly distraught, after the GOP left itself with no leader and no clear path forward.

The House is back in session, and Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s first order of business was to announce that he will direct a House committee to open “a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.” Notably, the decision allows McCarthy and Republicans to skirt a full vote in the House on weather or not to proceed with an impeachment investigation.
In a televised statement delivered Tuesday at the Capitol, McCarthy cited allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption,” against Biden that warranted “further investigation by the House of Representatives.

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday named David Weiss, a federal prosector appointed by Donald Trump, as a special counsel tasked with investigating Hunter Biden.
Weiss, who has been investigating the president’s son since 2019, requested to be made a special counsel on Tuesday. Update: The House Judiciary Committee has put a planned vote to hold Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress on hold.
The committee had scheduled a vote on Thursday afternoon on the question of holding Zuckerberg in contempt, claiming that he has failed to comply with a subpoena.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) wrote on X/Twitter, “Based on Facebook’s newfound commitment to fully cooperate with the Committee’s investigation, the Committee has decided to hold contempt in abeyance. For now. To be clear, contempt is still on the table and Will be used if Facebook fails to cooperate in Full.”
The subpoena has to do with the gathering of information by the Judiciary subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which has been investigating whether the executive branch coordinated with social media companies to limit posts on issues like Covid and vaccines.

Update: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made no mention of a cage match with rival Elon Musk on the company’s earnings call, but he did suggest that the X/Twitter owner’s missteps contributed to the dramatic growth in sign ups to the recently launched Threads.
“It could be that this is such an idiosyncratic because of all the factors that were happening around Twitter, or X, as I guess it is called now,” he told investors on the company’s earnings call. “So it is hard to say. When something works or doesn’t, you can often point to the reason why it did or didn’t, and I think there is an interesting intellectual question of whether you could have known that.”
Meta’s Threads launched on July 5, and reached 100 users in about five days its debut, Zuckerberg confirmed. But some studies have shown that engagement has fallen since then.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended himself on Thursday from accusations that he spread conspiracy theories online. His controversial remarks have covered topics such as vaccines and race. Despite pleas from various civil rights groups following his recent antisemitic comments, the Democratic presidential candidate testified at a House hearing on government censorship.
GOP members of the Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which has a Republican majority, asserted that conservatives have been unjustly targeted by technology companies that work with the federal government to stop online disinformation.
Meanwhile, Democrats on the committee argued that free speech comes with the duty to not pass on misinformation. Studies have not found substantial evidence that social media companies have a bias against conservative posts.
At the hearing, Kennedy doubled down on his statements, saying, “The First Amendment was not written for easy speech. It was written for the speech that nobody likes you for.

San Francisco, July 18 (Ians) Meta’s Twitter rival, Threads is now under investigation by the US House Judiciary which has reportedly asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to hand over documents about content moderation on the new platform that has crossed 150 million sign-ups.
House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has asked Zuckerberg to hand over documents “as part of the panel’s ongoing investigation of tech platforms’ policies and contact with the Joe Biden administration”, reports CNBC.
“Threads raises serious, specific concerns because it has been marketed as a rival of Elon Musk’s Twitter, which has faced political persecution from the Biden Administration following Musk’s commitment to free speech,” Jordan wrote in the letter.
Meta executives, however, have made it clear that they don’t want news and politics to dominate the conversation on Threads.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hasn’t exactly been towing the Democratic Party line since announcing his presidential run in April. The scion has been vowing to seal off the U.S.-Mexico border, siding with Vladimir Putin over Ukraine, and pushing a host of outlandish conspiracy theories — most notably about Covid-19, including a claim this weekend that it was ethnically targeted while noting infections were lowest among Jewish and Chinese people.

Washington, July 15 (Ians) Republicans came to defend Twitter owner Elon Musk during a hearing in an investigation by Lina Khan-led Federal Trade Commission (FTC) into Twitter over alleged user privacy failures and terminating a settlement the platform entered into with the FTC last year.
The House Judiciary Committee hearing came after Musk asked a federal court to end the FTC’s investigation into Twitter, reports The Verge.
“Why are you harassing Twitter?” Republican Jim Jordan (R-Oh) and committee chair asked Khan during the hearing.
“This wasn’t harassment. It was a shakedown,” he said.
Khan responded, saying the FTC imposed the privacy restrictions Musk cursed more than a decade ago.
“Twitter has a history of lax security and privacy policies,” she was quoted as saying.
Jordan called Khan’s leadership a “disaster” and suggested that the FTC’s Twitter probe was politically motivated.

Republicans hauled FBI Director Christopher Wray in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as part of their effort to tear down federal law enforcement for investigating Donald Trump. The hearing was a circus, with Republicans pressing Wray about various conspiracy theories and generally doing whatever they could do to portray the FBI as a corrupt extension of the Biden administration.
Democrats spent their time highlighting the absurdity of the idea, considering Wray is a registered Republican appointed by Trump. Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) poked several additional holes in...
