Exclusive: The Israeli producers and writers guilds have been in talks with Series Mania bosses after the festival’s chief said it was “impossible” for a show from the country to be included in its official selection this year.
Sources from the Israeli sector reacted with alarm and contacted Deadline after reading the quote from Laurence Herszberg. Since then, we understand the Israeli Producers Association (Ipa) and Screenwriters Guild of Israel have sought clarification, after a local Israeli news site reported that Israeli broadcasters and producers had, in fact, submitted numerous shows.
The issue began when, unveiling the competition participants earlier this week, Herszberg claimed that “in Israel, many ongoing projects were shut down, making it impossible for Series Mania to include an Israeli production” for the first time in the fest’s history. She added that the festival had been affected by “several international crises” including the Israel-Hamas War and Russo-Ukrainian War.

Exclusive: On October 9, 2023, two days after the massacre in the south of Israel which has led to an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups, Oscar-nominated Jewish writer-director Joseph Cedar called his Palestinian friend, fellow writer-director Tawfik Abu Wael. The two had co-created and co-directed the television series Our Boys for HBO (along with Hagai Levi). That series recreated the events surrounding the murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khedeir in 2014, which ultimately led to an outbreak of war in Gaza that year.
Just four years after the friends worked on this critically acclaimed series together, the October 7 massacre occurred, echoing striking similarities of the real-life events depicted in the 2019 miniseries but with the roles reversed.

Leading European artists, including Maria Choustova (“Donbass”), Sergei Loznitsa (“Donbass”), Pawel Lozinski (“Film balkonowy”) and Radu Jude (“Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn”), have taken a stand to support the Israeli film community as it seeks to rally voices and help free over 220 hostages in Gaza.
These names penned a heartfelt letter addressing the resurgence of antisemitism across Europe and the significant part that European artists must play in raising the alarm. The letter will be sent to the European Film Academy with a request to circulate it among its 3,000 members ahead of the European Film Awards ceremony on Dec. 9.
In Israel, prominent filmmakers such as Ari Folman, Hagai Levi, Jasmine Kainy, Eliran Peled and Joseph Cedar (“Footnote”) have spearheaded an online campaign called Bring Them Home Now, documenting the stories of relatives whose loved ones, including children and elderly people, were abducted during the Hamas terror attack on Oct.

Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac might be putting a freeze frame on their friendship after “Scenes from a Marriage.”
There’s no question that Chastain and Isaac, who’ve been friends since their early Juilliard Drama School days, went to tough places in the 2021 HBO miniseries created by Hagai Levi. Based on Ingmar Bergman’s own 1973 miniseries, “Scenes from a Marriage” starred the pair as Jonathan and Mira, a married couple falling spectacularly apart in the wake of Mira’s infidelity and Jonathan’s deep-seated repressions stemming from his old-world Jewish faith.
The series, which spanned five episodes and earned Isaac a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor but not one for Chastain, plays out as a collection of extended dialogues between the two characters, often identifying each other’s weaknesses and amounting to long scenes of yelling, tears, and breakdowns. Isaac, at one point, sang to Chastain to ease...

Our Boys creator Hagai Levi has said he was arrested briefly during a protest in Tel Aviv on Thursday.
Following his return from the Series Mania confab, Levi attended a protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned overhaul of the Israeli judicial system during what was dubbed “rage day.” Many such protests have broken out across the country over the past few weeks.
Levi said people started being arrested for standing in the road instead of sidewalks and he was stopped by police after stepping down from the sidewalk onto the street. According to Levi, he was grabbed by police and walked into a prisoners truck where he was detained in an arrest cell for a couple of hours and had his rights read to him.

The Israeli government’s efforts to reserve state funding only for films that uphold the regime’s far-right agenda is causing growing alarm among local filmmakers.
Since taking office in December, culture minister Miki Zohar has pushed for new requirements that would force artists and filmmakers to guarantee their works will not tarnish Israel’s reputation or that of its military. He also examined the possibility of forcing the producers of the documentaries “H2: The Occupation Lab” and “Two Kids A Day” to pay back state funding for the films.
The move comes against the backdrop of planned reforms by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government — which is believed to be the most right-wing regime in Israel’s history — that include the possible gutting of public television in the name of free market competition.

There are 136 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Directing, which will yield six nominations. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. Miniseries that also only submitted their sole director for the whole series, per the Emmy ruling, include “Gaslit” for Matt Ross,...

There are 110 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Writing, resulting in six nominees. The low number of entries in this year’s Best Limited/Movie Writing category can be attributed to the fact that all the top contenders have submitted only one or two episodes from their series when given the option. The Israeli government has introduced a new film and TV tax rebate said to be worth around 45 million shekels (13 million) over two years.
The rebate, which was introduced via a government directive, is worth around 23 million shekels (6.7 million) in the first year, and 22 million (6.4 million) the second year.
After two years it will need to be reviewed and renewed.
It is valid for films or series (including documentary projects) with an investment between 500,000 shekels and 16,600,000 (4.8 million).
Applications must be made through an Israeli production company and applications will be considered by a committee.
Over the last decade or so Israel’s homegrown film and television has exploded internationally, from shows such as “Homeland” and “In Treatment” – adapted from Israeli series “Hatufim” and “BeTipul” respectively – to series such as “Fauda” and “Shtisel.”

Oscar Isaac Discusses His Big Year: ‘Having More Ownership of the Creative Gave Me More Energy Back’
Oscar Isaac likes to quote Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard: “Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.” In the past two years, Isaac has learned this the hard way, pushing himself into ever riskier emotional terrain as an actor.
Ever since he broke out in 2013 with his first lead role as a sensitive finger-picking folk singer in the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” (after supporting parts in “Sucker Punch” and “Drive”), he’s shown a remarkable range. From a dancing AI scientist in “Ex Machina” and Vegas loner in “The Card Counter” to heroic Poe Dameron in “Star Wars” and Duke Leto Atreides in “Dune,” he can seemingly do anything, as hero, villain, lover, gangster, or artist. Now he’s got his pick of film and TV projects, and his recent derring-do has landed him in Best Actor Emmy contention in not one but two Limited Series: Hagai Levi’s remake...

In late April, Banijay Iberia moved waves by taking an equity stake in Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang’s Pokeespsie Films, with the aim of scaling up on its Spanish-language high-end original series and fiction production.
Via Shine Iberia, Banijay is also producing biopic “Bosé,” one of Vis’ biggest Spanish-language plays for Paramount Plus, about singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé.
Best known for its entertainment formats – though it does own Barcelona’s Diagonal TV, producer of hit Netflix historical sagas “Cathedral of the Sea” and “Heirs to the Land” and Dlo Producciones, behind “Tell Me Who I Am” and “El Immortal,” – Banijay is now moving to strengthen its position in scripted in the Iberian market and, via it, across the globe.

Adapting one of Ingmar Bergman’s seminal works for American television is an ambitious and daunting task. But writer-director Hagai Levi brought a contemporary spin to his HBO limited series based on the acclaimed 1973 Swedish miniseries Scenes From a Marriage: He gender-swapped the roles, having Jessica Chastain’s Mira leave her husband, Oscar Isaac’s Jonathan. (In the original, it’s Erland Josephson’s Johan who asks Liv Ullmann’s Marianne for a divorce.) But even with the roles reversed, the new series is just as provocative — and emotionally harrowing — as the original, which was so popular upon its airing that it was blamed for rising divorce rates in Europe. Chastain and Isaac spoke with THR about how they learned to let go of their long history as friends to create a shared bond between their onscreen counterparts as their marriage falls apart.

“I love the character and I really did enjoy my collaboration with Marvel, so if there was a really interesting take on a story, I’m all ears,” reveals Oscar Isaac about the possibility of one day donning the iconic Moon Knight suit again. The acclaimed actor had two high profile roles this past season, as the titular anti-hero in the Marvel Studio blockbuster action adventure “Moon Knight” and as a husband and father whose marriage begins to painfully unravel in the intimate HBO prestige drama “Scenes From a Marriage.”
For Isaac, both roles presented significant challenges, because both of these very different men are tormented by profound trauma on the one hand, or by blindsiding betrayal on the other. The genre and tone of both series didn’t ultimately matter to the actor, because he needed to approach both characters with a similar sincerity and truthfulness. “I appreciate that...

Germany’s Beta Group is backing a trio of new awards, each with a substantial cash bursary, to entice feature film directors to try out the world of serial television.
Beta will sponsor two awards, each with a 52,600 (50,000 euro) bursary, to back selected TV pitches from established feature directors. They are also getting behind a new emerging talent award, which comes with a 21,000 (20,000 euro) bursary, paid for by the Kirch Foundation, a nonprofit group set up by the late German media mogul Leo Kirch to support projects in film, television and the visual arts.
The three awards will be presented as part of the SeriesMakers program, an initiative launched by Beta and television festival Series Mania. The objective of SeriesMakers is to support talent in the transition to television series production by matching up directors and scriptwriters with showrunners, producers and other behind-the-camera veterans.

“The shows we’re focused on, they’re all made with love, they’re all made by hand and we pour our hearts and souls [into them],” proclaims executive producer Michael Ellenberg about what keeps a producer up at night — not whether a show will be a success or a failure, but what if nobody cares? “The greatest fear,” he says about the prospect of a project getting lost in the noise of an overcrowded market. For our recent webchat, Ellenberg adds, “if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? You know, that’s the fear everyone has right now,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As the former head of drama at HBO, Ellenberg founded Media Res, an independent studio that develops prestige scripted content for multiple streamers and networks. Since branching out on his own in 2017, the producer has been busy, shepherding numerous high-profile projects,...

A new documentary about “The Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion has been picked up for sales by WestEnd Films and Cinephil.
Directed by César Award-winning “Since Otar Left…” helmer Julie Bertuccelli, “Jane Campion, The Cinema Woman” is screening as part of the Cannes Classics line-up.
The New Zealand director was the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, for “The Piano,” and this year won the best director Oscar for her Netflix western “The Power of the Dog.” Bertuccelli’s documentary on the 68-year-old filmmaker, which spans 40 years, is described as “the portrait [Campion] deserves, in a film that is unapologetically subjective and offbeat, very much mirroring [Campion’s] own trailblazing journey in cinema and life.”
The film is produced by Academy Award nominee Estelle Fialon, and crew members include editors Laure Gardette and Svetlana Vaynblat (“Flickering Ghosts of Loves Gone By”), as well as César Award-winning sound editor and mixer Olivier Goinard.

In upcoming biopic “Golda,” Helen Mirren plays former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, when Israel was invaded by a coalition of Arab states on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Scenes From A Marriage
Original: 1973 Sveriges Television miniseries
Current: 2021 HBO limited series
When Ingmar Bergman’s six-episode series depicting the end of a marriage hit Swedish TV screens in 1973, it was considered so impactful that the country’s rising divorce rates were partially blamed on the portrait of a couple in crisis. (Its subsequent 167-minute theatrical version, released in the U.S. in 1974, also caused a stir when it was deemed ineligible at the 47th Academy Awards.) In 2021, a dissection of a crumbling marriage could hardly have the same effect, which for writers Hagai Levi and Amy Herzog meant looking ...

In taking on the duties as cinematographer for “Scenes from a Marriage,” Andrij Parekh acknowledges that it was frightening concept. “Recreating a Bergman piece is terrifying and you carry the weight of history on your shoulders. That being said, the opportunity to remake this in our own way was something that I was really excited about” he tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematography panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). He also wanted to make sure that the work he did would stand on its own merit. “I hope it looks nothing like the original. There’s a couple of shots that we used as homage; the kind of iconic shot of the could on the bed, but other than that we took full liberties to make it our own piece.”

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Scenes From a Marriage,” including the ending.]
The scene was set, and the set was seen — rather prominently, in fact, throughout writer/director Hagai Levi’s remake of Ingmar Bergman’s “Scenes From a Marriage.” Each of the first four episodes began with behind-the-scenes shots of Jessica Chastain or Oscar Isaac as they prepared for the (primary) cameras to roll. Then, for the finale, we got to see the pair walk off the soundstage, holding hands, at the very end of the episode — a choice in direct contrast to how most episodes end, with detailed exterior shots of Jonathan and Mira’s house as it exists in reality, rather than how it’s been reconstructed for all those passionate, devastating, and thoughtful interior scenes

There is no such thing as a perfect marriage. However, the growing discontent between Mira and Jonathan in HBO and Hagai Levi’s modern adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 classic Scenes From a Marriage is so realistic and raw that it will make all sorts of couples question the strength of their unions.
The tension first surfaced in Sunday’s premiere when Mira begrudgingly agreed to a doctorate-student interview alongside Jonathan. After asking about attributes the husband and wife couldn’t imagine themselves without, the student revealed that she was focusing on married couples where the wife was the primary breadwinner.

HBO’s reimagining of Ingmar Bergman’s “Scenes From a Marriage” reunites Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac after “A Most Violent Year” in the story of a longtime couple’s fracturing relationship. For Chastain and Isaac, the series presented the challenge of acting out sex scenes with a scene partner who has been a friend for well over two decades. The two actors attended the Juilliard School together and have remained friends ever since.
“Sex scenes to me are embarrassing,” Chastain recently told Vulture. “I’m fine talking about them. For one scene, the intimacy coordinator came in after the first take and said, ‘It doesn’t look like you guys are having sex.’ That was the note. I was like, ‘We’re not having sex.’ [Laughs.] Both Oscar and I were like, ‘Okay, great, thanks.'”
Chastain continued, “I said, ‘Well, I think it’s just a romantic moment?’ She said,...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the series premiere of HBO’s “Scenes From a Marriage.”)
The Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac-led “Scenes From a Marriage” remake debuted Sunday on HBO, revealing the intimate, complicated marriage of Mira (Chastain) and Jonathan (Isaac) that was crafted by writer and director Hagai Levi and based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 Swedish miniseries of the same name.
Though Levi tells TheWrap he took great care to follow the format set out by Bergman, there are two significant differences between this version and the original. First, he gender-flipped the storylines of the husband and wife at the center of this story. Second, he opens the premiere with a behind-the-scenes oner that follows his lead actress Chastain up until the moment “action” is called and then the show heads right into its scripted content.

On this 20th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11, there will be plenty of memorials and investigations into that time. We're not going to list them here, but there is plenty to choose from, and we hope that you do.
As usual, there are new programs coming your way, and there are also finales ahead. We've got a lot of them noted below.
On the movie front, Peacock has The Son and HBO Max has Cry Macho, both of which look damn good. Find out what else we recommend below!
Sunday, September 12
8/7c Chesapeake Shores (Hallmark)
Uh oh. Only one episode is left until the wedding, and Jess is bringing up a very uncomfortable discussion. As if we are worried.
Abby and Evan get to know each other better, and Even gets to know the whole family while staying at the inn.
And the moment I've been waiting for as Bree...

Don’t worry if you’re confused by the opening moments of HBO’s “Scenes From a Marriage,” a remake of Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 Swedish TV miniseries. It’s not just you. Several installments in writer-director Hagai Levi’s contemporary take begin with one of the leads — Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac — walking onto the set, interacting with various members of the crew, then launching seamlessly into a scene of their character’s story. It’s a jarring breaking of the fourth wall, but that’s clearly Levi’s intention. This, after all, is the tale of a relationship’s nosedive, where tension is constantly bubbling under the surface until it boils over into moments of intense drama.
Chastain and Isaac were Julliard classmates, played a married couple in 2014’s “A Most Violent Year” and are longtime friends; that red-carpet kiss he planted on her arm at the Venice Film...

Raw and real. That’s the tone of writer-director Hagai Levi’s five-part adaptation of Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s groundbreaking 1973 miniseries about a disintegrating relationship. In HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage, Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac deliver brilliant performances as an American couple: tech executive Mira and philosophy professor Jonathan, whose loving marriage is poisoned by resentment and anger. We talked to Levi about the emotionally complex series, which takes place over several years. What influence did the original Bergman version have on you as a young artist? Hagai Levi: [The series] was shocking. The effect was undeniable. It was built mainly on the power of words, and that was my world. I grew up in a small village in an Israeli Kibbutz, a religious Jewish community where, most of the day, what you do is sit with someone and study the Talmud or the Bible and have a dialogue.
