2015's "The Martian" is a far lighter and funnier sci-fi movie than its premise might suggest. Set in the year 2035, the film stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a cheeky NASA astronaut who's accidentally stranded on Mars after a mission to the red planet goes sideways. Left on his own, Mark proceeds to make a video diary about his efforts to stay alive until NASA can formulate a plan to bring him safely home. Elsewhere, his fellow space travelers decide to take matters into their own hands as they make their way back to Earth.
Much of the comedy in "The Martian" comes in the form of Mark's gallows humor, whether he's making light of his dire situation or cracking wise about his mission commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) and her love of groovy 1970s disco tunes. Also helping to prevent the story from becoming too downbeat is Ridley Scott's direction,...

Ridley Scott made his name directing science-fiction films, but it's not a genre he latched himself to. Between 1982 and 2007, he was only involved in two sci-fi productions, and they were really just two extensions of one project: "Blade Runner," and the re-edited "Final Cut" of that film, which restored the film as he first envisioned it.
Since the 2010s, Scott has explored science fiction more than in the preceding decades. His "Alien" prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant" were divisive (though I'm a fan), and the HBO Max series "Raised By Wolves" met a premature cancellation. Scott's most popular 21st-century sci-fi story was 2015's "The Martian." That film racked up a blockbuster gross and earned the director his best reviews since "American Gangster" in 2007. Contrary to its title, the lead is an Earthling: astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who's left stranded on Mars and must survive alone for 18 months. When compared to "Alien" and "Blade Runner,...

Looks like Ryan Seacrest doesn’t have to worry about not having back-up if he is forced to skip an “American Idol” show again. When the host for all 17 seasons of the reality singing contest called in sick on Monday night and had to miss his first-ever episode that was taped weeks ago, mentor and radio host Bobby Bones was recruited to perform Seacrest’s on-air duties.
Ryan did make an appearance in a clip that opened the show to explain his absence and say his signature line: “This is ‘American Idol.’ ” Otherwise, Bobby — who knows how it feels to be a contestant on a TV talent show after winning the most recent season of “Dancing With the Stars” — managed to keep things moving during the second Top 20 show and stayed out of the way. Bobby did manage to inject some humor, though, as he told he audience, “Sadly, Ryan is sick,...

This week Six Degrees of Murder looks at the very personal murder of lawyer Melissa Britt Lewis. Melissa worked at Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm in Fort Lauderdale, where she was close friends with workmate Debra Villegas. Her friend was having trouble with her marriage and Lewis had just gone through a divorce herself. She was supporting her friend and the pair spent a lot of time together with their children. However, Debra’s husband Tony Villegas was not happy about their relationship and thought that Lewis was a bad influence on his wife. He was jealous of Melissa’s closeness to her […]

For a big budget movie about a lone astronaut who gets stranded on Mars, the spacesuits in The Martian are surprisingly sober in terms of design. There is an attempt here to make everything seem as plausible as possible, costume design especially. Director Ridley Scott’s regular costumer Janty Yates has created possibly the sexiest spacesuits ever seen on screen, and what’s more they are functional. To paraphrase a line in the film, she had to “science the shit out of them”.
Yates collaborated with Nasa looking specifically at their Z1 and Z2 prototypes to create an Eva (‘Extravehicular Activity’ – any time the crew must go outside) suit and surface or ‘bio’ suit (worn on Mars). The surface suit is similar to the blue under-suits she created for Scott’s near future set Prometheus in 2012, although further grounded in reality. The Prometheus under-suits could, in theory, monitor functioning levels of the human body,...

20th Century Fox released their new Sci-Fi/adventure flick, "The Martian," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out , and thought it was very entertaining, serving up some great drama along with a great storyline. There was also a lot of suspense towards the end. It stars: Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig and Matt Damon. In the new flick, an Ares III manned mission to Mars gets hit by an intense storm, causing astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), to get lost and presumed dead. With the lives of her crew at stake, mission commander Melissa Lewis, is forced to leave the planet, leaving Mark behind. From there, Mark uses his great botanist skills to grow food within the mission's artificial habitat, anticipating that he will need to survive for at least three years and journey to the landing site of the next manned mission. He keeps...

Ever wondered which Hollywood movies accurately depict life in outer space? Or how astronauts use the bathroom? (The answer to that last one is pretty obvious, but you sure never see it in the movies.)
We have wondered these things. And as it turns out, so has Jessica Chastain, who plays astronaut Melissa Lewis in Ridley Scott's The Martian.
We sat Chastain down with actual Nasa astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson – who trained her for the role – for some real talk about what happens in zero gravity.
Watch the video above to find out Caldwell's thoughts on Hollywood space travel, and Chastain's most challenging moment on set. (Hint: It involves using the bathroom.)
The Martian is released in the UK on September 30, and in the Us on October 2.

Taking a trip to Mars, no problem. Encountering a storm and having to evacuate Mars, no problem. Having your crew assume you’re dead and leave you on Mars, maybe a bit of a problem…
In October’s The Martian, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left to fend for himself on Mars until Nasa can get a crew to the hostile planet to rescue him. With dwindling supplies and an extra long wait to hitch a ride home, Watney uses his mad botany skills, throws in some humour and even some fun disco music - much to his chagrin - to survive.
This isn't Matt Damon's first trip to space, having appeared in Interstellar, alongside current co-star Jessica Chastain, who plays Watney’s commander, Melissa Lewis.
Cineplex sat down with Matt, Jessica, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Sebastian Stan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover, Jeff Daniels, and Sean Bean...

"The Martian" is a perfect example of why Ridley Scott drives me nuts. Working from an aggressively smart and funny screenplay by Drew Goddard, adapted from the also smart and funny book by Andy Weir, "The Martian" is so confident, so relaxed, and so completely sure-footed that it almost looks effortless. It takes a genuine master craftsman to take something as complex and difficult as this and make it look easy, but it also takes an artist with a great ear to take something as dense with exposition as this is and make it practically sing. So how does the guy who fumbled "Prometheus" and "Exodus" so hard that it felt like he was trying to sabotage the studio turn around and absolutely nail this in terms of tone? Such is the unsolvable riddle that is Ridley Scott. In the end, what matters is that there are very few filmmakers...

We’ve seen teasers, full-length trailers and even viral marketing campaigns featuring the inimitable Neil deGrasse Tyson; now, 20th Century Fox has pumped out the debut clip for Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which sees the Ares-3 crew batten down the hatches in the face of an alien storm.
Arriving by way of Yahoo! Movies, the footage is a tense, nail-biting peak at the calm before the literal storm, where the entire crew are still on the Red Planet before a raging storm brings an abrupt end to their martian mission. With no choice but to uproot and evacuate, Ares-3 inadvertently leave Matt Damon’s Mark Watney behind. Presumed dead, it’s only when the ship returns to near-Earth orbit that they receive Watney’s rudimentary radio signal to confirm that he is still alive, despite the monumental odds stacked against him.

This week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at The Martian, the upcoming sci-fi film from director Ridley Scott.

To date, 20th Century Fox has supplemented its riveting full-length trailers for Ridley Scott’s The Martian with a trio of viral clips, designed to introduce the cast and crew of the Ares-3 before they embark on their daring mission to the Red Planet. 20th Century Fox definitely wants to keep science-fiction drama The Martian on our radar screens. With the trailer (sitting at the bottom of the page) and a featurette already online, here comes some new imagery from the movie. Based on Andy Weir’s bestseller, the film finds a manned mission to Mars going chaotically wrong when a massive storm hits. Presumed dead, botanist Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left behind as the rest of the crew, led by Commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) head back home in their ship, the Hermes. But Watney is merely injured, and, as he contemplates trying to survive on the Red Planet with a limited number of supplies, he finds a way to contact Earth. There, the likes of Nasa official Teddy Sanders must find some method to rescue him, even as Lewis and the crew of the Hermes risk treason charges to come to Watney’s aid.

There's still no trailer as yet for Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi tale "The Martian," but a new video for the film has surfaced online, a mock promotional piece introducing us to the crew of the Ares 3 spacecraft in the movie.
