From Beanie Babies to Pop-Tarts, the history of distinctly American consumerism is taking a big screen swing.
Jerry Seinfeld writes, directs, and stars in Netflix’s “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story” centered on cereal rival companies Kellogg’s and Post that set out in a culinary equivalent of the space race: create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast. The film is set in the aptly-titled Battle Creek, Michigan in 1963. “Unfrosted” marks Seinfeld’s directorial debut.
The all-star cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Daniel Levy, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, Adrian Martinez, Sarah Cooper, and Fred Armisen. Hugh Grant also plays an early Tony the Tiger mascot, swapping the Oompa Loompa orange from “Wonka” for tiger stripes in a full-on costume you have to see to believe.

Exclusive: Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies) has joined the casts of Andrew Durham’s feature directorial debut Fairyland for American Zoetrope, and Jerry Seinfeld’s first film Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story for Netflix. Details as to the roles she’ll be playing in the features have not been disclosed, though we hear she’ll only be making a cameo in the latter.
Fairyland is a father-daughter coming-of-age story that Durham adapted from Alysia Abbott’s Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father. The book originally published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2012 is set against San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scene of the 1970s and ’80s, both before and after the AIDS epidemic — a crisis that would ultimately claim the life of Abbott’s father, the widowed poet and gay activist, Steve Abbott. Bakalova joins an ensemble led by Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy, which also includes Geena Davis, Cody Fern,...

Universal has given road-trip drama “Green Book,” starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, an awards-season release of Nov. 21.
Production companies are Participant Media and DreamWorks Pictures. Peter Farrelly directs the movie, based on a true friendship that transcended race, class and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line.
Mortensen portrays an Italian-American bouncer with a seventh-grade education who is hired to drive a world-class pianist, played by Ali, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South. They must rely on the “Negro Motorist Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for blacks. Confronted with racism, danger — as well as unexpected humanity and humor — they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive.
Producers are Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler and Farrelly along with Farrelly’s fellow writers, Nick Vallelonga and Brian Currie. The drama is executive produced by Participant’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King,...

Wamg recently attended the Flight press conference held at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. The great thing about press conferences is that you really get a nice glimpse into the creative effort that goes into any given film. For Flight, we got to hear director Robert Zemeckis, screenwriter John Gatins, star Denzel Washington, and other cast members talk about their various approaches and experiences with Flight.
For Zemeckis, Flight marks the return to live-action filmmaking. The innovative director has spent the past decade directing and producing films that utilize motion capture technology and indeed Zemeckis has long been on the forefront of special and visual effects technology in films. However, strong characters with compelling emotional journeys anchor all of his films, including Flight.
Gatins extensively researched real-life air disasters. At that time, the legendary Us Airways .Miracle on the Hudson. river landing accomplished by heroic pilot Sully Sullenberger, was still ten years away.

"The Social Network's" climb to Oscar victory was put to a halt by the Producers Guild, giving its much-coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures to Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech!" (Full list of PGA Awards nominees and winners below)
Thus, making this one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent years. Will the unclear antagonists and protagonists of "The Social Network" triumph over the "against all odds" story of "The King's Speech"?
Keep in mind that PGA has a better simulation of Oscar process (ten-picture slate, preferential ballot system) but still, taking the last ten years into account, PGA has matched only six out of the ten Best Picture Oscars.
In 2000, "Gladiator" won both Oscars and PGA, but 2001, PGA picked "Moulin Rouge!" but the Oscar went to "A Beautiful Mind."

The King’s Speech won best-produced film from the Producers Guild of America on Saturday, a great courage to its Oscar ambitions in an awards season so far much swollen by The Social Network. On the same night the organization praised Scott Rudin, the primary producer on ” The Social Network,” with a lifetime achievement award. Other films in line for the best-produced movie of the year were Black Swan, The Fighter and Toy Story 3, which won best-produced animated film.
The Producers Guild of America represents more than 4,500 producers nationwide, prepared for its 22nd annual Producers Guild Awards — set for Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.
Producers Guild and other industry honors could improve Oscar chances because many members of the PGA and WGA also belong to the Academy, whose members cast votes for the Oscars. In the last three years, the Producers Guild and the Academy have agreed on best picture winners.

The King’S Speech became the reigning monarch at the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards and usurped the Oscar-frontrunner’s crown from critics’ favorite The Social Network. Is it an upset? You betcha! Do we now have a real Oscar race this year after all? Definitely. This bodes well for The King’S Speech enthusiasts, like yours truly, as the PGA and Oscars have matched for the past three years. Director Tom Hooper’s historical drama, starring Colin Firth as George VI, won out over 127 Hours, Black Swan, Inception, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, The Social Network, The Town, Toy Story 3 and True Grit.

Hollywoodnews.com: Nominees for the 22nd annual Producers Guild Awards were announced this morning, and if you have been paying even the slightest bit of attention during the awards race, you could guess the 10 titles picked for Best Picture, otherwise known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
Regular nominees like “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” led the list, paired alongside the likes of “127 Hours,” “Black Swan,” “Inception,” “The Fighter,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The Town,” “Toy Story 3” and “True Grit.”
If there’s a big winner, it’s Ben Affleck’s “The Town,” which also found its way into the Top 10 nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics Association for their Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, which air Friday, Jan. 14. Does this mean it will make the cut when the Academy picks 10 later this year?
