Every time a TV or movie crew is asked to adapt a popular novel, there is a chance that it will go horribly wrong. While some novels are easier to retell in new formats, others are impossible to make into a coherent script without changing too many things or adding too many new plots to fill in the holes.
If there's already a perfectly good adaptation of a novel, many believe it's better to leave it alone as a good example. In the case of Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent, however, the story ended up looking too good to leave behind.

Although Scott Turow's 1987 novel Presumed Innocent has already been adapted into the 1990 film of the same name starring Harrison Ford, Apple TV Plus has decided to repeat the success and give the book another shot. In this version, the story will be adapted into an...

Apple TV+ has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Presumed Innocent” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, from Emmy-winning creator David E. Kelley.
Gyllenhaal narrates the trailer as Rusty Sabich, a man seemingly consumed by his love for a woman named Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). “She woke something up inside me,” he says as the footage cuts between his time with her and images of cars and courtrooms and arguments — clearly invoking a darker twist in this alleged romance. Carolyn, it turns out, has been murdered and, given their history, Rusty is the prime suspect.
What the trailer leaves out is extra juicy: Rusty and Carolyn were coworkers and prosecutors, and the suspected crime sends waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office as they mourn a colleague, reel from an affair, and pursue a murder investigation — to say nothing of how it affects Rusty’s marriage and home life.

It’s not the first moment we meet the show-stealing Danielle Brooks as Sofia in Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaption of “The Color Purple,” but it might as well be, so clearly (so amusingly) does it capture her essence.
Picture this: We’re in Harpo’s (Corey Hawkins) newly built cabin, a home he’s endeavored mightily to make his own, when who should appear? His own fiancée, Sofia, as ebullient and self-assured as any character we meet in the Alice Walker adaptation, who doesn’t just enter her future house, but literally kicks down the door to make her way inside.
It’s Sofia in a nutshell: buoyant, confident, funny, a little crazy, and impossible to ignore. So it’s only fitting that Brooks, who brings Sofia so wonderfully to life in the film, can be thanked for its creation.
“I have so much pride in that moment,” Brooks...

The film adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical arrived in theaters on Christmas Day and has already grossed an impressive $25 million. Since then, Celie’s story has gone from the page to the big screen to Broadway and is now back in cinemas. In the new Max documentary “Oprah & The Color Purple Journey,” premiering on Thursday, Dec. 28, Oprah Winfrey, who was one of the original film’s stars, chronicles the impact that “The color Purple: has had over the past 41 years. Where do you stand on the 1985 film version of “The Color Purple,” which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but won none? Some feel it wasn’t Steven Spielberg’s story to tell. Others marvel at how a director of the upbringing depicted in “The Fabelmans” managed to recognize and reflect so many aspects of Black culture: the music, the spirituality, the multiple catharses to which it builds. Looking back, Spielberg did justice to Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel, but he also left room to expand and improve.
Now, nearly four decades later, a rousing new version arrives from director Blitz Bazawule, who collaborated with Beyoncé on her 2020 visual album “Black Is King.” Instead of rejecting what came before, the Ghanian filmmaker embraces and builds upon it, collaborating with Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey to update the material for the next generation (all three serve as producers). In response to her Golden Globe nomination Monday for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in The Color Purple, Fantasia Barrino starts the conversation with gratitude as she swore, after playing Celie on Broadway in the musical adaptation, she would never play the character again.
“I’ve said in Interviews before that I would never play this role again because of post-traumatic stress, but I am so glad that I didn’t allow fear to stand in my way,” she said after this morning’s nominations were revealed.
Barrino first rose to fame in 2004 when she won the third season of American Idol with her powerful, raspy voice and emotional performances. After releasing her debut song “I Believe,” which later became the fastest-selling single in history by an Idol contestant, she released her first album. It debuted at No. 1 and was certified platinum.

This article contains spoilers through the Manifest series finale.
After keeping viewers captivated since 2018, Manifest finally reached its thrilling conclusion as season 4 part 2 landed on Netflix on Friday. While the series answered most of our burning questions regarding the mystery of Flight 828 and whether passengers could survive the Death Date, it did leave viewers with many questions regarding the show’s arc and whether some deaths were necessary.
For most of the last ten episodes of Manifest, flight 828 passengers found themselves locked in a detention center by the Registry because of public fear and the government wanting to do scientific experiments on them. The passenger’s position in the detention center hindered their ability to solve their callings and figure out what needed to be done to help them survive the Death Date.

Max is touting strong viewership for its true-crime limited drama series Love & Death.
The streaming service says that the Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons series has become its number one most-watched Max original limited series globally.
Previous limited series for the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned service, which didn’t give any hard numbers for Love & Death, include Station Eleven, Dmz and The Staircase.
It also noted that the limited series, which comes from writer David E. Kelley and director Lesli Linka Glatter, had the biggest launch of any Max original in 2023. However, there haven’t been any other big original drama or comedy launches this year – Love & Death has been its first original live-action scripted title to launch out of the U.S. since Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and Rap Sh!t in July 2022, although it has launched series such as animated comedy Fired on Mars...

[This story contains major spoilers to the finale of Mrs. Davis.]
Mrs. Davis made a promise from the beginning that Simone, the heroic nun at the center of the genre-jumping story played by Betty Gilpin, would destroy the titular algorithm of the series. And after eight wild episodes, the show delivered on that promise.
The finale of the Peacock series from co-creators Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof is titled “The Final Intercut: So I’m Your Horse,” a name that was given by the algorithm created in the writers room to generate episode titles. (In their own quest to tackle the looming conversation around AI, the writers confronted the technology first-hand by developing their own algorithm, feeding it scripts and outlines, and then asking it to name the eight episodes.) Finale director Owen Harris thinks the title is genius. “It’s disconnection with the story is what that title is about,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It says pretty much everything...

You know Michaela Watkins, right? She was on “Saturday Night Live” and was the star of “Casual” and “Enlightened.” You’ve heard her voice work on “Big Mouth” and “Robot Chicken,” and she was in indie gems like “In a World,” “Sword of Trust,” and “Thanks for Sharing.” You know her from somewhere.
“I get to work all the time, and nobody really knows who I am,” she recently told IndieWire. And, as Watkins makes clear, that’s no complaint. She’s got a great acting career, one that started quite late by Hollywood standards. A former member of improv troupe The Groundlings, she spent a decade bumping around in single-episode, minor-role stints before spending a year as an “SNL” featured player in 2008.

When Jeff Russo sat down to watch “Mrs. Davis” to score the show, he had the same reaction as you likely did afterward. “I watched that first episode and I was like, ‘Wait. What? What? What is happening right now? What is going on?’” Russo tells Gold Derby (watch above). “I had the same response. It was like, ‘This is bonkers.'”
Co-created by Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof, the Peacock series stars Betty Gilpin as Simone, a magic-hating nun who is sent on a quest by the titular AI to find the Holy Grail. In exchange, Mrs. Davis will grant her one wish, and Simone wants the AI to shut herself off once she completes it. And so Simone sets off with her ex, Wylie (Jake McDorman), on a wild mission that involves a giant sword, a sneaker commercial and more. “Mrs. Davis” is a hodgepodge of ideas, set pieces and tone,...

No amount of turns the world takes around the sun will lessen the intrigue of seeing the title card read, “This is a true story.” Sure, we’ve been burned a few times. By the time the movie or show ended, we were looking at the reflection of ourselves on the screens, feeling like absolute doofuses for taking the bait. But I’m here to assure you that the same is not the case with Love And Death. Although by the time you get through the first three episodes and have already given little bits and pieces of your heart to the people and their lives, chances are, you would wish that they were fictional, and the horrid fate didn’t befall them. Bringing her Wanda mind-palace-esque housewife to the hellish tale of Love And Death, Elizabeth Olsen summons a ray-of-sunshine murderer who wasn’t charged with the murder of her lover’s pregnant wife.

Elizabeth Olsen calls herself an “unemployed” actor — even after playing Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her latest role as Candy Montgomery in the HBO miniseries “Love & Death.”
“I don’t want to work for work’s sake,” she tells Variety. “I don’t know how to half-ass stuff, so I have to love something a lot. And there are things I love, and it’s tough to raise money for them.”
Olsen, 34, has multiple projects she wants to make with some unnamed first-time narrative directors but is finding it difficult to secure the financing that would allow them to have creative control. So, while she continues navigating Hollywood’s grounds during an unsteady economic time and a possible writer’s strike, she says she’s enjoying this break after working three years straight with Marvel (including two years of shooting and one year of promotion). “I don’t miss it,...

Tom Pelphrey is living in baby girl bliss! In March, the actor and his partner, Kaley Cuoco, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Matilda.
“The first month has been heaven,” Pelphrey tells Et’s Deidre Behar while promoting his new HBO Max show, “Love & Death”.
Although he’s only been a father for a matter of weeks, Pelphrey says that he has already learned a few important lessons.
“It’s sort of like you keep them safe, you keep them healthy, you don’t let them hurt themselves and you offer guidance and structure,” he says. “I feel like the the child is also apart of this equation and they’re not going to be dictated to or shouldn’t be.”

“Love & Death” is set to premiere Thursday on HBO Max (soon to be just “Max”) and is expected to be a strong Emmys player for the cable and streaming platform in the limited series races. Elizabeth Olsen’s turn as the unfiltered adulterous Candy Montgomery, along with Jesse Plemons’ performance as the dim-witted and simple churchgoing husband of her friend Betty Gore, are expected to be among the top prospects in the acting races, but not where pundits had initially speculated.
Variety has learned exclusively that Plemons will be submitted for supporting actor in a limited series and not the lead actor race category, which was assumed early on. So, unsurprisingly, Olsen will be the sole leading acting submission for the series.

Without giving away a single favorite thing, Oprah Winfrey brought the house down with a surprise appearance at CinemaCon 2023.
Revelers at the annual convention of movie theater owners were delighted by the mogul’s cameo at Tuesday’s presentation from Warner Bros. Pictures. Winfrey is a producer on the studio’s upcoming movie musical “The Color Purple,” based on the 1985 Steven Spielberg classic in which the former daytime host starred.
“‘The Color Purple’ in 1985 was the biggest and most important thing that happened to me. This is a full circle moment to be part of this film. It holds great personal meaning,” Winfrey told the crowd.
Appearing with director Blitz Bazawule, the pair showed the first footage ever screened from the project — a rousing and lush production that particularly showcased femme fatale Taraji P. Henson.
The film will open this coming Christmas Day, and boasts serious musical and Hollywood star power.
