Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023, so not only did the sequel Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 have a substantially higher budget, that success opened the door to an entire cinematic universe that will consist of at least one more Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio: Unstrung. Premiere Entertainment is currently presenting Pinocchio: Unstrung to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market – and Variety was able to learn more information on the project, including the fact that the movie will be made with “little reliance on VFX and feature the character of Pinocchio as a practical doll. A. Milne’s jovial bear into a feral serial killer.
Variety has the details of “Pinocchio: Unstrung,” which is selling in Cannes via Premiere Entertainment. Like “Blood and Honey,” Rhys Frake-Waterfield will direct the film, which which have little reliance on VFX and feature the character of Pinocchio as a practical doll (casting for Geppetto will soon be announced). Ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia this summer, the next film from The Adams Family has received a release date this week.
Shudder will premiere Hell Hole on August 23, Rue Morgue first reported.
Fantasia previews, “A road trip through Canadian oil fields conjured up fantasies of secrets deep in the dirt for the Adams family, and inspired them to create Hell Hole, an indie rock-n-roll monster movie set at a far-away fracking site.
“Known for their DIY ethos, John and Lulu Adams and Toby Poser, partnering with Shudder, have joined the team behind The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and FX legend Todd Masters to shoot their latest in Serbia with a local cast and crew.
“Absurd, mutinous, and transgressively comical, Hell Hole is old-school sci-fi horror, yet in typical family fashion, they subvert the genre with textures of biological and environmental horror in tandem with...

This post contains spoilers for the second episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
Jackie (Ella Purnell) is toast. Actually, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that she's roast. The resident mean girl of "Yellowjackets" froze to death at the end of the hit Showtime series' first season, but it took two more episodes for her teammates to give in to the fact that her body is technically edible and they are very, very hungry. The group finally caved in the latest episode after a funeral pyre burial for Jackie had an unintended side effect: a really tasty smoked meat smell.
When cannibalism finally came to "Yellowjackets," the camera didn't shy away from the gory details but instead got up close and personal on the girls (and Travis) as they ripped chunks of Jackie's flesh off her by then-unrecognizable body, while cross-edited scenes show the group indulging in a Dionysian feast.

[Editor’s note: Spoilers abound for the first and second episodes of Season 2 of “Yellowjackets.”]
“Yellowjackets” will never pass up the chance to let a death mess up the living. Still, Episode 2 of its second season, “Edible Complex,” sends off the recently deceased Jackie (Ella Purnell) in truly twisted style. To create the various iterations of Jackie’s corpse, the Showtime series utilized the Masters FX team, led by decorated gore veteran Todd Masters. Masters has plenty of experience creating cadavers, including building all the corpses used on “Six Feet Under.”
The process of creating iterations of Jackie’s frozen body the other girls could act against involved first digitally creating a model of Jackie’s head and body, then translating that model into a “hero” dummy made out of silicon with a fiberglass structure, plus human hair for that extra touch of realism. But the team also built a version that could handle multiple takes on fire.

Welcome back, dear readers! We’ve nearly made it through another week and December is (quite literally) just right around the corner. And since the holiday season is pretty much upon us, we’re back with another installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For today, I’m celebrating a handful of books that I have either had the chance to check out this year and fell in love with, or several titles that I’m confident genre fans will love that I just haven’t had a chance to check out yet for myself.
To make things easier, I’ve sorted the books into two categories: non-ficton and fiction. And also, just so everything is on the up-and-up, I want to mention that I did include my own latest book in today’s edition of the Hgg just because the artists featured in this second volume of Monsters, Makeup...

In accordance with its namesake, the new Syfy series“Day of the Dead” is jam-packed with the undead. Meet their maker: Emmy-award winning makeup effects artist Todd Masters.
Masters — who is known for his work on “Slither,” “Tales from the Crypt” and “True Blood” — and his company MastersFX were given the lead to head the special zombie makeup effects on the series. This ode to George A. Romero’s famous flesh-eaters reminds its audience that sometimes all it takes to bring people together is a horde of zombies trying to rip them apart. The series follows the story of six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion. “Day of the Dead” also marks the first time that Masters serves as an executive producer.

Syfy fantasy series “The Magicians,” about a group of college students who travel through time and worlds to battle wildly imaginative creatures, draws to a close April 1 after five seasons, having taken viewers on a Harry Potter-meets-video-game thrill ride. Knowing that this is the end of the run gives MastersFX founder and president Todd Masters and his team one last chance to showcase the program’s most popular characters — using their own magic to deliver the makeup effects.
Series creators Sera Gamble and John McNamara had specific ideas about what they wanted in the show’s seven so-called questing creatures, which, when discovered, must grant the magician a wish that helps fulfill a quest. For instance, Sir Effingham (played by Sean Maguire) is half man, half pig, and he looks a bit like Benjamin Franklin.

Tonight, the artistry of practical effects are being celebrated at a very special screening event that’s not only celebrating the 25th anniversary of Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, but also a huge milestone in the industry, as it was recently announced that the Visual Effects Society has reinstated the “Practical/Special FX” award for their annual awards ceremony.
For Todd Masters, the “Masters”mind behind the special effects in Ernest Dickerson’s Demon Knight, he’s thrilled by the inclusion, but is quick to realize that it’s just one small step in the right direction.
“It is exciting that the Ves is finally accepting practical effects, but it is one category encompassing both television and film, so I do think we have a ways to go,” Masters explained. “It also seems to be taking every aspect of practical effects, including pyrotechnics and things like that, in addition to makeup effects.

This weekend, Orion Pictures unleashed a new Child’s Play into theaters everywhere, along with a brand new version of the Buddy doll (now known as Buddi) to terrorize a new batch of victims (and a few other surprises to boot). Behind the more AI-centric redesign of Chucky and all the glorious kills in Child’s Play (2019) are legendary effects artist Todd Masters and his brilliant team at MastersFX, who worked endlessly to give fans a super fun slasher but also a bold new version of a horror icon as well.
[Spoiler Warning: The following contains some spoilers about specific plot points in Child’s Play (2019), so if you haven’t seen the film yet, and don’t want to have the experience spoiled, be sure to come back to this interview once you’ve seen the remake.]
While there is always that innate pressure that comes with taking on an established and iconic horror character, Masters instead saw the new design of the Buddi doll in the remake as his way of paying tribute to one of his compatriots as well as taking the character in a new direction that was more befitting of this new Child’s Play story.

When it comes to remakes these days, I feel like I’ve softened on my stance regarding their existence because simply, like death and taxes, they are just an inevitability. And when it was announced last year that we were going to be getting a new iteration of Child’s Play, of course I had some concerns, considering we had a Chucky franchise that was still doing its thing, and the original Child’s Play played a massive role in the formative years of my childhood.
So, going into Child’s Play (2019), I wasn't exactly sure how the remake would land with me, but I'll be the first to admit that I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. Not only does it deliver up a viciously entertaining time, but it also does what every great remake should do—find a way to bring something new to the table...

The planned Child’s Play reboot remains a controversial matter among longtime viewers of the series, not least because of the film’s drastic reworking of Chucky’s origins, replacing the killer’s voodoo backstory with that of a murderous A.I. But while this new take on the franchise’s devilish mascot has yet to earn the favor of the fans, a recent press release from MastersFX can at least provide some context on the freckled face of Lars Klevberg’s upcoming flick.
MastersFX is the studio responsible for building and animating the new Chucky, and from the sound of things, it was a pretty elaborate procedure:
“MastersFX has brought the new Chucky doll to life on screen like never before in a mixture of practical on-set puppet work and digital FX enhancements. Todd Masters, founder of MastersFX, and his team took six weeks to prepare and assemble seven practical animatronic puppets,...

Throughout his career, special effects artist Todd Masters has always embraced any challenges that have come his way, whether it was bringing the Borg to life in Star Trek: First Contact, giving life to Billy Zane’s demonic spawn in Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight, or severely dismembering ne’er-do-wells for the Soska Sisters' American Mary, Masters has always found a way to make the impossible possible in the world of special effects.

Coming to Syfy this fall is Ghost Wars, a new paranormal-themed series which features an incredible cast including Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Coates, Meat Loaf, Avan Jogia, and Kandyse McClure. While in San Diego last weekend at Comic-Con, Daily Dead briefly spoke with Ghost Wars creator and executive producer, Simon Barry, and he discussed the challenges of creating a unique supernatural story for television, working with his ensemble, and he teased the new series’ unusual spin on ghosts and defying fans’ expectations of those kinds of entities in their entertainment.
It seems like, from the trailer, this is a very much different approach to the supernatural that a lot of other shows are doing or have done in the past. Can you talk about the challenges of taking on a story like this and some of your inspirations behind Ghost Wars?

For a decade, fans have waited for the Tales From The Crypt movies, Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood to make their Blu-ray debut. Along the way, some very expensive import versions were released, but as tempting as that was, I knew Scream Factory would be the one who would release the definitive editions of these films, and that is exactly what happened.
Demon Knight
Easily the highest quality film in this double feature from the crypt, Demon Knight is one of the definitive horror movies of the Nineties. It has a killer soundtrack, a hip, talented cast, and some tremendous special makeup and monster effects.
I’m happy to report that Demon Knight holds up extremely well. It had been a very long time since my last viewing, so I was a little bit concerned. But, honestly, I may have even enjoyed the movie more this time around. I remember it being a wild,...

October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.
Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Next Tuesday, Scream Factory will offer horror fans several new options for Halloween movie marathons when The Larry Fessenden Collection and the Tales From the Crypt films Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood come out on respective Blu-rays. Ahead of their impending release date, we have clips and trailers from all three Blu-rays to give you a look at what's to come.
Demon Knight (Collector's Edition Blu-ray): "A mysterious drifter known as Brayker (William Sadler, Iron Man 3) possesses the last of seven ancient keys that hold the power to stop the forces of darkness and protect all humanity from ultimate evil. But the human race is safe only so long as Brayker can evade the demonic Collector (Billy Zane, Titanic) who has gathered the other six keys.
In his obsessive quest for the key, the Collector rallies an army of ghastly cadavers against Brayker and the inhabitants of a run-down hotel.

Exclusive: Filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead on Blending Monsters and Romance for ‘Spring’
In 2012, the up-and-coming directing duo of Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson took the indie horror world by storm with their feature film debut, Resolution. Their intimate, micro-budgeted tale of two men stranded in a cabin during a time of crisis (in more ways than one) immediately caught on with the horror community at large and, because of the compellingly unique storytelling approach Benson and Moorhead utilized in Resolution, the pair immediately became filmmakers to watch. They recently collaborated together on a segment for V/H/S: Viral and their latest genre-bending feature, Spring, is set to debut in theaters and on VOD on March 20th.
We recently chatted with both Moorhead and Benson about the inspirations behind the story and the creature from Spring, how the indie landscape favors their bold approach to genre storytelling, working with their talented cast on the film and why relationships have been and will...

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of my celebration of Ernest Dickerson’s Demon Knight, which turns 20 today. After several successful seasons on HBO under its belt, Tales from the Crypt and its iconic host, The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir), made the leap to the big screen in January 1995 with the feature film Demon Knight. Directed by Ernest Dickerson and starring William Sadler, Billy Zane, Jada Pinkett, Dick Miller, Brenda Bakke, Thomas Hayden Church, Cch Pounder and Charles Fleischer, Demon Knight debuted at #3 its opening weekend and took in over $21 million during its theatrical run, making the first of the Tales from the Crypt a bona fide success (even if the critics didn’t seem to think so).
A movie best remembered by fans for its masterful blending of horror and comedy, an incredibly diverse and talented cast of players as well as an iconic soundtrack and jaw-dropping special effects to boot, it was love at first sight after I first experienced Demon Knight all those years...

With the latest issue of Deadly – Horror & Sci-Fi Magazine currently available, I thought it would be kind of cool to share with our Daily Dead readers a look at the artistry and skill that went into making the special effects for Ernest R. Dickerson’s 1995 horror comedy, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight.
These great photos were provided to us by F/X maestro Todd Masters (Slither, American Mary), who had previously worked on the Tales from the Crypt television series and was brought onto the big-screen production to not only create all the demonic creatures, but to handle Demon Knight’s ambitious gore gags as well.
With Demon Knight celebrating its 20th anniversary this upcoming January, I thought this would be another great way to celebrate one of my favorite (and underrated) modern horror films of all time.

One of my very favorite parts of this job is being able to pay tribute to movies that I grew up loving, the ones that taught me something about the genre and had a huge impact on me as a horror or cinema fan in general. One such movie is Ernest R. Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight andm with its 20th anniversary approaching, I thought the horror comedy would make for a perfect selection for my next Deadly – Horror & Sci-Fi Magazine retrospective in the upcoming November issue.

We won’t be getting more Falling Skies until next summer, but TNT doesn’t want us to forget about the alien invasion series while we wait. Today they released a new featurette about the special effects makeup and prosthetics that look so natural – do we say that alien makeup looks natural? – that most viewers have no idea how much work goes into them.
Watch this and you will. It’s especially fun to hear Cochise sound like a regular guy:
Featurette: Falling Skies – Season 4 – Behind the Magic
Kudos to Todd Masters and Doug Jones, they do some really terrific work.
Falling Skies, starring Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Connor Jessup, Seychelle Gabriel, Sarah Sanguin Carter, Colin Cunningham, Gloria Reuben, Ryan Robbins, and Maxim Knight, will return for Season 4 in 2014 on TNT.

The Fashion Police strike started April 17, and now the show's writers are speaking out about their disappointment with Joan Rivers' lack of support to help them receive a fair agreement, including health insurance, a pension plan and industry-standard compensation, with E! Network. In a YouTube video posted by Writers Guild of America West, writers Jackie Beat, Dante, Eliza Skinner, Rob Nolan, Ned Rice, Todd Masterson and Bryan Cook describe how excited they felt when they initially started working for Rivers but were later disappointed by her unwillingness to help them receive standard labor benefits. The video begins with words

Interview Sarah Dobbs 8 Jul 2013 - 07:00
Sarah chats to Doug Jones about Falling Skies, acting underneath prosthetics, Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy 3, and the apocalypse...
You might not immediately recognise Doug Jones’s face. Many of his most famous roles involve heavy makeup and prosthetics that transform him into some kind of otherworldly creature: he plays Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, one of the Gentlemen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, to name just a few. He’s an incredibly physical actor, managing to convey volumes in just a movement of his head or his hands. He’s never less than brilliant, basically, and he’s always worth watching, whatever he’s in.
Right now, he’s appearing in the Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi show Falling Skies, which meant I got to have a quick chat to him…...
