Bill Groom has provided sumptuous, period-accurate sets for the entire run of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” but the final season of the Amazon comedy required the designer to go big with his designs. He is once again nominated in the Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More) category for the episode “Susan.” This installment required the creation of several extravagant theatrical sets. “It was probably the largest amount of work we did all season,” offers Groom. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
A core location in “Susan” is a business expo which houses several industrial musicals. Not only did each set have to contain the requisite amount of detail and flair that “Maisel” has been synonymous for in its design, but they also had to house original musical numbers. Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

When she won a Golden Globe for “The Devil Wears Prada,” Meryl Streep said it best about what the role of costume design could be in moving pictures while thanking costume designer Patricia Field: “That was like special effects for our movie.”
Indeed, “special effects” is what the effervescent Pat Field touch brings to any project that she signs her name under, the most popular among them undoubtedly being HBO’s “Sex and the City.” With perhaps the exception of “Mad Men” has there been another culturally iconic TV series in the last quarter century that informed, even evolved how people dressed in their daily lives?
So it’s no easy task to do justice to the life and legacy of Field, a colorful New York City personality with a recently published book about her life. But more versed in episodic outputs such as CNN’s four-part docuseries “American Style” than feature-length films,...

A version of this story about Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Five seasons of Amazon’s pop-culture-reveling hit “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has yielded more stars rising than bagel dough, but possibly none more so than show composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore. The duo, who met at Northwestern and mentored with “The Muppet Show” veteran and multiple Emmy winner Larry Grossman, are responsible for pretty much any piece of music you hear that isn’t from someone’s songbook, and like other efforts from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, you can bet musical numbers are going to be part of the deal.
“We did actually we were set up on a sort of blind date with them about close to 10 years ago now,” Mizer says. “We’d been writing a stage musical...

When music supervisor Robin Urdang read the first episode of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” she knew she was in for a challenge.
The pilot of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s hourlong comedy called for a song from Barbra Streisand, an artist whose work rarely clears for film, let alone television. It immediately set a standard for Urdang’s working relationship with the Palladinos and the level of communication and adaptability she’d need on the Prime Video series.
Urdang, along with supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Ron Bochar, production mixer Mathew Price, and the “Maisel” music and lyrics team of Curtis Moore and Thomas Mizer, spoke to IndieWire as part of the season’s Consider This series about their Emmy-winning work on the indelible comedy and specific challenges and joys of Season 5. Written by Curtis Moore and songwriting partner Thomas Mizer, the song features in “Susan,” Episode 4 of the Amazon Prime series’ fifth and final season. One of the most music-filled episodes of the show, “Susan” follows Susie (Alex Borstein) and Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) as they help a garbage man who calls in sick.
The episode was also submitted for production design for a narrative period or fantasy program (one hour or more) by Bill Groom, production designer; Neil Prince, supervising art director and Ellen Christiansen, set decorator.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore are used to being kept on their toes. So, when creator Amy Sherman-Palladino approached them about writing a few musical numbers for a variety act, which would culminate in a tune about the neighborhood trash man for Season 5, the composers knew they’d “figure it out.”
“We have no idea what’s going to happen in the scripts, we don’t get them. They write them late. So we had no idea what it was gonna be about. We knew there was a big musical coming up,” Moore said during an appearance at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Television awards-season event, where he was joined by Mizer. “So we got the assignment, [and] we were like, ‘Wait, what?'”
Added Mizer: “She just brought us into a room and said, ‘It’s gonna be about trash.’ And imagine our faces at that moment.

Music has always been an intrinsic part of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, with a perfectly curated soundtrack for both its in-era songs its often anachronistic end credits music.
However, on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 4, we get the closest we've ever gotten to a musical episode, even if all the numbers are diegetic.
"Take It Away!" is the perfect title for the opening number of a trash-related musical.
Composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore have truly outdone themselves with the many songs for this show-within-a show as well as the opening number" Everything Goes" and the "Dream Kitchen," which feels both whimsical and authentic to the period.
Emily Bergl's Tessie shows up here and gets to sing, which we learned recently is a thing she likes to do. It may be on a big pile of trash, but at least she's center stage, much to Susie's surprise.

Multiple heavyweight series return this spring, which will have a big impact on the 2023 Emmy craft races, particularly with the final seasons of “Succession,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Star Trek: Picard,” and possibly “Ted Lasso.” Plus, “The Mandalorian” is back and should continue its craft domination, while there are opportunities for improvement for new seasons of “Yellowjackets,” “The Great,” “Schmigadoon!,” and “Perry Mason.”
Before looking ahead at potential opportunities, it’s worth noting past Emmy performances.

The songs nominated for the 2022 Best Music and Lyrics Emmy are “Corn Puddin’” (“Schmigadoon!”), “Elliot’s Song” and “I’m Tired” (“Euphoria”), “The Forever Now” (“This Is Us”) and “Maybe Monica” (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). The last three shows are involved in a rematch after having all competed in the 2020 contest. In that case, “Euphoria” emerged victorious with the tune “All for Us.”
With its past win and pair of new notices, “Euphoria” seems like the one to watch this year. When composers are struggling on a piece, sometimes all it takes is one simple directive or another set of eyes — or ears, rather — to help them crack it. For “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore, everything became crystal clear when Amy Sherman-Palladino told them that the Harry Belafonte song they had to write should be a wedding toast, not a pop hit. The duo hails from the theater world, where often complete strangers help them unlock pieces.

When Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore joined “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” in the third season, they were tasked with writing ’50s-era pop hits for Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain). For Season 4, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino upped the ante: She asked them to write a song for Harry Belafonte (Josh A. Dawson).
“I think she likes to tease us,” Moore tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “No, I think with ‘Maisel,’ she’s always trying to push the envelope a little bit. “I thought that must be from an earlier season,” remembers Robin Urdang about seeing her name as a 2022 Emmy Award nominee. After her stunning Drama Actress victory in 2020, Zendaya returns to the Emmy Awards this year with triple the number of nominations (make that quadruple when her series bid as an executive producer gets finalized). In addition to her second nomination for acting in “Euphoria,” the multitalented star also nabbed two more in the Music and Lyrics category for penning the lyrics to “I’m Tired” and “Elliot’s Song.”
She faces off against a field that includes offerings from “Schmigadoon!,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “This Is Us.”

The music branch of Emmy voters is not always impressed by big names. Take last year, when Beyonce, Cher, H.E.R. and even Bruce Springsteen had songs in the mix for consideration Voters ignored them, shutting out superstars in favor of composers and songwriters within the. World of TV.
What does that mean for this year’s race? Robert Lopez and wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who were early frontrunners last year and ultimately won with “WandaVision’s” “Agatha All Along,” return this time with another earworm, “You Are the Music” for Apple TV+’s animated comedy “Central Park.”
Anderson-Lopez came up with the essence of the song, in which Josh Gad’s character, Birdie, is feeling threatened by Rory O’Malley’s Elwood, who he feels is going to take his job. That motif plays alongside the bigger theme of the episode about competitiveness between Tillerman siblings Cole (voiced by Tituss Burgess) and Molly (Emmy Raver-Lampman). Ultimately,...

Nathaniel R: Hello Matt, Eurocheese, and our special guest Thomas Mizer, who has guest blogged here before and who is an Emmy-nominee as a lyricist for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. We won't ask Tom to sound off on the Best Song nominees (too close to home) but we do need his input on Best Original Score. In fact, I personally need all of your input on Original Score. I recognize fully that Scores are way up there with Editing in how they can make or break a movie, but unlike with editing (which I am fairly well versed in), I am not particular adept at noticing what composers are doing or how they're doing it. I hate to admit this because I love Nicholas Britell's work (generally speaking) but I honestly didn't realize Don't Look Up had a score. I thought while watching it that it...

Fans of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" are well accustomed to ending an episode with a song stuck in their heads. Amazon Prime Video's hit series can't let the clothes do all the work, so it also throws audiences back into 1960s New York with the help of a nostalgic, swinging soundtrack, featuring everyone from Fred Astaire and Barbra Streisand to Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Back in its third season, "Maisel" took its atmosphere to the next level with its first batch of original songs, courtesy of the musical magic of songwriting duo Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore. A...

Emmys’ song category (officially original music and lyrics) embraces a wide spectrum of tunes, from amusing late-night trifles to powerful concluding anthems. This year the Television Academy’s voting members chose seven worthy songs penned by Oscar winners, Grammy winners and more.

When Clarence Avant’s daughter, Nicole, asked songwriter Pharrell Williams to consider writing an end-title song for the documentary about the music executive’s life, he confesses, “I thought I knew this man’s legacy. I had no idea his fingerprint was on so many things we all benefit from.” So, with fellow songwriter Chad Hugo, he penned “Letter to My Godfather,” drawing inspiration from many musical genres, “to reflect his eclectic reach in terms of business and influence.” The lyrics — “he’s our chandelier, to bring the light” — were Williams’ metaphor for Avant’s ability to throw open the doors to “these often...

Pharrell Willliams, Labrinth (pictured) and Isabella Summers of Florence & The Machine could all wind up with Emmys this year. So, for that matter, could Ingrid Michaelson, Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor and veteran pop producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
All were among nominees in the music categories as the Television Academy announced the nominations for the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards for work in TV during the 2019-20 season.
This year’s crop was the most diverse in memory. More than one-fourth of all the music nominees are people of color, and more than half are first-time nominees for television’s highest honor.
Said Academy governor Rickey Minor, who’s nominated twice this year for his music direction of “The Oscars” and “The Kennedy Center Honors”: “Living through this time in our history, has made us all awaken to the truth that we — as a humanity — are all the same.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has an enviable batting average when it comes to Emmy Awards for music supervision — the past two have gone to the team of show creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino and music supervisor Robin Urdang. But this year, the “Maisel” crew has its sights on the original song competition, unfamiliar territory for the Amazon Prime Video hit.
While the soundtrack to season three contains the showtunes, classical music, Klezmer and iconoclastic standards of the era, the showrunners set about creating a palette of new music for Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain), the singer for whom titular comedian Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) serves as an opening act.
The creators sought to give Baldwin a unique musical personality, someone rooted in a ’50s crooner style with a taste for the burgeoning soul music, and tasked songwriters Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore to listen to Johnny Mathis and Sam Cooke...

The talent both behind and in front of the camera of Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” could have just been making sourdough bread and having Zoom meetings as they passed the time away while social distancing themselves as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Typically, they would be shooting Season 4 of show right about now as the sitcom that stars Rachel Brosnahan as an Upper West Side housewife turned stand-up comic further embraces the ’60s.
Instead, in the spirit of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, the gang decided to put on a show. Quarantine sure stoked the creative juices of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” team. Normally, they’d be busy working on a new season of “Maisel” at this point. But since they’re following Covid-19 stay-at-home orders, the show’s dancers, musicians, cast and crew instead put together a 10-minute music video.
The video, which Amazon Prime Video will share with all TV Academy members on Monday, was the brainchild of “Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, promotes the show’s Emmy For Your Consideration efforts but also doubles as a showcase to raise awareness and support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, MusiCares, and Swans for Relief.
Shot in just three days, more than 60 people put this together. It opens with Ryan Farrell as Brye Adler, the host of “Miami After Dark.” Farrell filmed from his home in Brooklyn, which he redressed to match the show’s Miami aesthetic.

How do you craft a mythical hit single from 1959? That was the challenge for songwriters Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore (“For The Love Of Tiffany”), who were tapped by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Dan Palladino to compose five original songs for Season 3’s newest character, pop star Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain). This was a marked departure from the usual jukebox playlists used as the musical backdrop for the misadventures of Rachel Brosnahan’s stand-up comic, Midge.
The first song the duo tackled was “One Less Angel,” a joyous crowd pleaser for Baldwin to perform with his backup singers, The Silver Belles. “It put us in a situation just like writers would’ve written songs at that time,” said lyricist Mizer. “Amy was very specific about wanting Shy Baldwin to have his own identity, to be recognizable as one person [based on a composite of Sam Cooke and Johnny Mathis...

It's Here! Welcome to the Supporting Actress Smackdown, a summer festival in which we investigate Oscar shortlists from years past. 1947 was a fine cinematic vintage and Oscar made room for a ghostly judge's wife, a countrified mother of 15, a jaded dance hall girl, a single New York City fashion editor, and a righteous rock of a mother in the Supporting Actress race. What's most historically interesting about this particular set is that it's a who's-who of character actress superstars of the 1940s. Get this: all but one of them won this category and received multiple nominations within an eight year span from the mid 40s to the early 50s.
