Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

On the heels of its premiere to critical acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film Kneecap on the Irish rap trio of the same name has been slated for release by Sony Pictures Classics in theaters nationwide on August 2, when it will open against Columbia Pictures’ family film Harold and the Purple Crayon.
The first Irish-language film to bow out of Sundance, where it landed the Next Audience Award, pic stars Naoise Ó Cairealláin aka Móglaí Bap, Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh aka Mo Chara and JJ Ó Dochartaigh aka DJ Provaí as themselves, all making their acting debuts. Others in the cast include Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best, Simone Kirby and Michael Fassbender.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!
Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

Dublin-based outfit Wildcard Distribution has picked up’s Dublin world premiere King Frankie for release in UK and Irish cinemas.
It is the feature debut of writer-director Dermot Malone and stars Bad Sisters actor Peter Coonan as a Dublin taxi driver, who runs his own taxi firm. While coming to terms with his father’s recent death and going through the associated rituals, the taxi driver comes face to face with something that happened 10 years ago. The filmmakers describe the film as “a “Celtic Tiger tale you have not seen”.

“X-Men: First Class” star Michael Fassbender is set to star in a biopic about an Irish rap group called Kneecap.
As Variety exclusively confirmed in May, the feature film – eponymously named “Kneecap” after the band – is billed as a raucous anti-establishment comedy.
“Kneecap” stars real-life band members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí as heightened versions of themselves. The group came to fame in 2018 for their blend of nationalist Irish rap which often dealt with the gritty reality of growing up in Northern Ireland after the civil conflict known as the Troubles.
In 2019 they were reportedly condemned for “outrageous behaviour” after leading chants of “Get the Brits out now” at a pub that Prince William and his wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge had visited a day earlier.
The film is written and directed by “One Rogue Reporter” helmer Rich Peppiatt, who has also directed a music video for the band.

Exclusive: New Europe Film Sales has boarded international sales on Northern Irish director Aislinn Clarke’s second feature Fréwaka ahead of the AFM, where it will unveil first footage.
The Irish and English-language production follows Clarke’s 2018 found footage horror The Devil’s Doorway, which was acquired by IFC for the U.S.
Billed as the first ever Irish-language horror, Fréwaka revolves around care worker Shoo, who is haunted by a personal tragedy.
Shoo is sent to a remote village to care for an agoraphobic woman, who fears both the neighbors and the Na Sídhe – sinister folkloric entities she believes abducted her decades before.
As the pair develop a deep connection, Shoo becomes consumed by the old woman’s paranoia, rituals, and superstitions, eventually confronting the horrors from her own past.
The title originates from the Irish word “fréamhacha”, meaning roots that are entwined underground.
The cast features Clare Monnelly (Moone...

The birth of the hip and naughty Irish-language rap group Kneecap will be portrayed in a raucous anti-establishment comedy penned and directed by Rich Peppiatt (“One Rogue Reporter”).

Knight and Day Directed by: James Mangold Written by: Patrick O'Neill Starring: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano Has Knight and Day been sitting on a shelf somewhere since the late nineties? I can just imagine some backlot custodian blowing the dust from the canister and proclaiming, eyes wide, “My God — this was supposed to be released thirteen years ago!” It recalls a simpler time, when summer blockbusters were sold on Hollywood star power rather than franchise familiarity. The stars of Knight and Day, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, now 48 and 37 respectively, are considerably older than the leads of last summer's highest grossing film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, (Shia Labeouf/Megan Fox, both 24). But while the performers may have passed their commercial ‘best by’ date, they’re nowhere near expiry; they bring a wholesome charisma to the silly script that might otherwise have been embarrassing for its over-the-top protagonists.

The players: Director: James Mangold, Writers: Patrick O'Neill & others, Cast: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano, Viola Davis
Facts of interest: Mangold also helmed "Walk the Line" and "3:10 to Yuma."
The plot: A secret agent in trouble runs into a charming woman, and together, they try to put an end to the chaos that surrounds them.
Our thoughts: Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are in great shape in James Mangold’s new action comedy “Knight and Day,” a silly, yet wildly entertaining summer blockbuster stuffed with witty dialogue, refreshingly brainless action and interesting enough characters you’ll instantly like. Oh, and as over the top as the movie really is, I have to admit it’s also incredibly easy to enjoy.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in an over-amped but underpowered spy tale.
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in "Knight and Day"

Anyone who's ever been trapped on a plane flight from Hell — squashed by sprawling seatmates, battered by passing backpacks, besieged by squalling brats — will appreciate the elegant simplicity of Tom Cruise's solution to similar problems: He kills everybody. Literally. But then they were trying to kill him. Even the pilots. Which is why they're dead, too.
Emerging from the loo, Cameron Diaz is surprised to find that she and Tom are now alone, unless you count corpses as company. And she's worried — the plane is diving fast. Tom will handle that. ("No need to panic.") But then what?
The answer to that question has been clear in every espionage-romance dating back at least to Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps." The answer is: Run!

Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise in Knight and Day
Photo: 20th Century Fox James Mangold has quite the diverse list of films to his credit. Looking at a select few, he directed Angelina Jolie to an Oscar win in 1999 with Girl, Interrupted, in 2003 he directed the John Cusack thriller Identity and in 2005 he directed Walk the Line, which led to five Oscar nominations and a win for Reese Witherspoon. His last film was the two-time Oscar nominated western remake 3:10 to Yuma and somehow that all leads up to a raucous action-comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. How did that happen? Your guess is as good as mine, but Mangold has delivered a fun film that makes the most of Cruise's charisma and, for the most part, delivers the film the trailers promised.

There's another poster up for 20th Century Fox's comedic action romance "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. In some ways, I'm keen on taking in a night at the movies for "Knight and Day," but, I have my reservations after some cheesy vids I've seen lately. You be the judge, check them all out below. The film is screenwritten by Patrick O'Neill who gets his first feature-length credit, and produced by Todd Garner, Cathy Konrad, Joe Roth and Steve Pink. It's rated PG-13 for sequences of action violence throughout, and brief strong language.
