Gladiators, suit up: The “Scandal” rewatch podcast, “Unpacking the Toolbox,” is set to return with new episodes on April 11.
“Unpacking the Toolbox” is hosted by former “Scandal” stars Katie Lowes (who played Quinn) and Guillermo Díaz (who played Huck) — their Irl friendship was forged on set, and fans nicknamed their twisted on-screen partnership Huckleberry Quinn.
Part of the iHeartPodcasts network, the Shondaland Audio series “Unpacking the Toolbox” — a reference to Huck’s torture kit — hit pause during the SAG-AFTRA strike, having covered the first two seasons of Shonda Rhimes’ ABC drama, which ran for seven seasons from 2012 through 2018.
“Scandal” revolved around Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope, a D.C. fixer who also happened to be having an affair with the very married President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). The series was a slow burn for ABC, ratings-wise, but midway through its second season, its delightfully batshit plotting and wild weekly cliffhangers caught on with audiences,...

From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications...

This story about “Queen Charlotte” costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
What would a Met Ball with a Georgian theme look like? That was the inspiration behind Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon’s costumes for Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff of the hit Regency-era drama series straddles both that period, when Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) bore the public weight of the Crown, and 56 years earlier, when she (India Amarteifio) married King George (Corey Mylchreest) and adjusted to life as a royal.
For the later timeline, set in 1817, Paolo and Frecon honored the style established by “Bridgerton” costume designer Ellen Mirojnick: high-waisted, fluid gowns influenced by ancient Greece and Rome. For the 1761-set portion, they went back to the conical shape, when women were tightly cinched...

It took a village to build the costumes for Shonda Rhimes’ latest “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo and co-costume designer Laura Frecon paired up to tell young Queen Charlotte’s (India Amarteifio) story and her rise to power in Britain, after her marriage to King George III. But even though Rhimes told Paolo it was going to be a “small spin-off,” the costume designer who had worked with her on “Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder” knew that Rhimes would want “everything to be glorious.”
There were going to be grand scenes, such as a funeral and a coronation. Frecon says, “We were told there were no balls,” referring to the grandiose costume fetes that marked almost every episode of “Bridgerton.”
Says Frecon, “But we got the research done. Then it was about gathering the fabrics and linen. We went to Sudbury, U.

In collaboration with longtime Shondaland costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo, Shondaland and Allure Bridals have announced a first-ever bridal gown collection inspired by the opulence of Netflix’s Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte. The Bridgerton Weddings collection will bring to life Paolo’s exquisite Regency- and Georgian-era designs that have come to define the multifaceted Queen Charlotte in the Bridgerton prequel series. Paolo previously worked as a costume consultant on Bridgerton and is an intimate part of bringing the sumptuous Bridgerverse to life.
The idea behind the collection was initiated by Shonda Rhimes and Sandie Bailey, Shondaland’s chief innovation and design officer, when they approached Paolo with the opportunity to design a bridal gown collection influenced by Queen Charlotte’s era in the Bridgerton series.
“The Allure team have been spectacular in listening and sharing and creating together,” says Paolo, who’s worked with Shondaland for a decade on shows including Scandal,...

[This story contains mild spoilers from the first two episodes of Queen Charlotte.]
Five minutes into Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte, a young Charlotte, played by India Ria Amarteifio, is called “Ridiculous to the eye” by her brother Adolphus as she sits barely moving in the back of a carriage. Charlotte, displeased, both by her circumstances — being married off to the king of England — and her attire, delivers a terse response that sets the tone for what will come to define her character throughout the series: Her feisty spirit and her fashion sense.
“I am wearing lyonnaise silk encrusted with Indian sapphires working with an overlay of 200-year-old lace,” Charlotte retorts. “Apparently too much movement can cause the sapphires to shred the lace. If that were not enough, the gown sits atop a bespoke underpinning made of whalebone.
“Yes, whalebone, brother,” she adds a moment later as he stares back in astonishment, “The bones of whales. Whales died so I could look like this.

One of the visual pleasures of Netflix’s “Bridgerton” has been the series’ enthusiasm for bolder colors and costumes inspired — but never limited — by the styles of the Regency era. Clothing is how the show makes clear not just who has the social upper hand but each character’s approach to social climbing and self-confidence.
In the prequel series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon (both Shondaland alumni) use the characters’ clothing to achieve those same ends from the moment we first meet the soon-to-be Queen (India Amarteifio) on her way to marry a man sight unseen. But for inspiration, they looked beyond the series’ era to something far more modern: the Met Ball.
“Laura and I are very conscious of being very respectful of the world that [Season 1 costume designer] Ellen Mirojnick created. It’s quite a wonderful world. But our story is an origin story,...

“Costume design is all about collaboration,” declares Lyn Paolo, the Emmy-winning artisan who, along with Laura Frecon, has created the glamorous looks for the Netflix drama “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” The prequel to the smash Netflix series “Bridgerton” premieres on the streamer on May 4 and follows the young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) in the early days of her marriage to King George III (Corey Mylchreest). In an exclusive video chat with Gold Derby (watch above), Paolo and Frecon discuss their collaboration on the series as well as the challenges of creating the show’s unique period looks.
Both Paolo and Frecon describe the importance of honoring the blueprint for the costumes of “Bridgerton,” created by Emmy-winning designer Ellen Mirojnick. “We absolutely wanted to respect what Ellen did in the first season and how she created this world, but we definitely also treated our show as its own thing,” argues Frecon.

Fo Inventing Anna, Shonda Rhimes needed someone she trusted to create the outfits for the infamous fashionista. As a longtime collaborator of Rhimes, costume designer Lyn Paolo was the best person for the job.
Inventing Anna is a Netflix miniseries, created and produced by Rhimes, inspired by the true story of fake German heiress Anna Sorokin played by Julia Garner. Under the assumed name Anna Delvey, Sorokin managed to con the most influential people in New York City into believing she had a massive fortune overseas, which she then used as leverage towards her goal of creating an exclusive art club.
While she travelled the world in the series, the bulk of Delvey’s journey takes place in New York City which became the basis of Paolo’s designs. Although she lived her life online before she was caught, researching her fashion was more difficult for Paolo and her team...

When bringing a “whole story [that] is completely true, except for all the parts that are totally made up” to life, “Inventing Anna” costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon had to dive into Instagram.
“The very beginning of the project was actually more about research and matching everything that the real Anna wore for her Instagram — which sort of became our Greek chorus,” Paolo told Variety. “And that was extensive research… Even before we got into the fashion elements, we had to recreate that whole Instagram wall, and also all of the court looks.”
“Inventing Anna” follows faux-heiress Anna Delvey (née Anna Sorokin) (Julia Garner) as she awaits trial for grand larceny and theft of services. Shonda Rimes’ nine-episode series, which premiered Feb. 11 on Netflix, is inspired by the 2018 New York Magazine investigation by Jessica Pressler, who dove into the life of Sorkin and examined how she scammed her way...

The 1990s-set characters in Little Fires Everywhere and Buffy the Vampire Slayer apparently have the same taste in jewelry. Bay Area artist Peggy Li created jewelry pieces for Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington's Hulu show, some of which are identical to chokers she designed for Buffy.

For the '90s period costumes of the upcoming Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere, veteran costume designer Lyn Paolo first looked to her previous work on the mega-hit series ER and The West Wing for inspiration. "I work out of Warner Bros. [costume department], and between Friends and ER, they had quite a few pieces in stock. I also sourced things from Brooklyn to Chicago and found a lot of real period pieces," says the two-time Emmy Award-winning designer (Homefront).

This past Fall, I chatted with the up-and-coming triple threat (the actress and musician is also an aspiring director) about what it was like working with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, who plays her mom in the Hulu series; the "surprises" fans of the book can expect; and how she's living out her "dreams of becoming a '90s teenager." In ABC’s “Scandal,” which airs its final episode April 19, some of the best-tailored and most conservatively dressed people on TV engage in some of TV’s most outrageous behavior as they navigate the charged political climate of the nation’s capital.
Credit for the show’s reserved garments, which contrast sharply with the personalities who wear them, goes to costume designer Lyn Paolo, a go-to artisan for showrunner Shonda Rhimes. (The two have also collaborated on “How to Get Away With Murder” and “For the People.”)
From “Scandal” star Kerry Washington’s initial fitting with Paolo, lead actress and costume designer were on the same page: Washington’s character, Olivia Pope, would be a glass ceiling-shattering heroine from the moment she opened her closet. She would be successful enough to afford Armani, Prada and, in a nod to Paolo’s native England, a Burberry trench.

Now we know what wedding dress Scandal‘s Olivia Pope would’ve worn if she ever got married to Fitzgerald Grant.
On Thursday’s alt-reality 100th episode, Kerry Washington‘s character walked down the aisle to marry her on-screen love, played by Tony Goldwyn.
Pope, who did not become a Washington, D.C.-based crisis manager, wore a gorgeous Anne Barge wedding gown in the brand’s Berkeley silhouette. The off the shoulder dress featured a ruched silk satin chiffon bodice with voluminous ball gown skirt made of Italian Silk Kalika.
Wondering who designed the #scandal100 wedding dress? It's the Berkeley by Anne Barge.

As die-hard fans of "Scandal" know, there's not much that Kerry Washington can or will say about the upcoming, always-jaw-dropping twists and turns that the show's become beloved for -- and she admits that usually even she doesn't what's about to be thrown at her. As the show prepares to launch its fourth season, there's one conclusion about her character that she's come to, no matter how emotionally invested she or the show's admirers are in Olivia. "I've always thought it was really misguided when women tell me that Olivia Pope is their role model," says Washington, "because she's having an affair with a married man who is the President of the United States. And a murderer. And they stole an election together -- well,...

To walk in Olivia Pope's shoes... Would we instantly inherit some form of badassery? Could we inspire and lead a group of our own gladiators? To channel her empowering alter-ego, Kerry Washington surprisingly reaches deep down to the soles. "The biggest thing for me are the shoes," the Scandal star said to Dkny PR girl Aliza Licht in the latest The Edit cover story. "I'll wear Uggs around set, but I can't rehearse a scene in them because I don't feel like Olivia until I put the shoes on. Shoes define how you walk in the world and how you stand, like: what is your posture in life?" Kerry admitted that she and Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo were inspired to elevate...

“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Into the Woods” and “Inherent Vice” are among the nominees for the 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, the CDG announced on Wednesday.
So is “Selma,” which ended a 0-for-5 drought and picked up its first guild nomination of the year.
The guild chooses nominees in three separate categories: Excellence in Contemporary Film, Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Fantasy Film. The Costume Designers Guild joined the guild chorus Wednesday morning with a list of nominees across three categories: contemporary, period and fantasy designs. On the list, and finally joining the guild party, is "Selma" from legendary outfitter Ruth E. Carter. It's the first guild mention for the film so far and obviously a warranted one. Carter was joined on the period side by "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Inherent Vice" (yay!) and "The Theory of Everything." Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what makes "Interstellar" a contemporary film rather than a fantasy film (which is how the art directors classified it). Either way, I'm sure the team is happy to be included. I can't believe, though, that "Mr. Turner" has been excluded from both this list and the art directors'. Though it feels like this kind of thing has happened before, only to be righted by the Academy.

Kerry Washington's Olivia Pope is a style trendsetter and The Limited is continuing its collaboration with "Scandal," with another collection on the way.
Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson hit the set of The Limited photo shoot, for a conversation with "Scandal's" leading lady about the new fashions, which she was a collaborator on, with The Limited's Elliot Staples, and "Scandal" costume designer Lyn Paolo, but Shaun also wanted the skinny about being a new mom to daughter Isabelle.
"Can you just tell me how being a mom has changed Kerry Washington?" Shaun asked the actress.

Olivia Pope is many things. Now that Barbara Walters is retired, she's probably America's Most Powerful Lisper. She's also a dangerous person to associate with (Rip, Harrison) and a tough person to love. She always answers her phone, even if polite company would consider it a rude moment to do so, and apparently, she drinks wine wrong. She's also, notably, a fashion icon, thanks to costume designer Lyn Paolo, who dresses Liv in a combination of ultraluxe textures and precision tailoring. Even in her pj's, Olivia is elegant, precise — and maybe a little closed off. Here's everything she wore in season three of Scandal. (And previously, everything she wore in season two.)...

Why does Olivia Pope wear those immaculate overcoats? How did Hannah Horvath end up in that famous mesh T-shirt during her coke binge? How does Saturday Night Live get an entire episode's worth of outfits ready in a matter of days?
