Alan Cumming is opening up about Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and the sequel that Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are soon to pitch to the studios.
In 1997, Cumming starred in the comedy film as Sandy Frink, the unpopular geek who has a crush on Kudrow’s Michele and turns into a successful businessman after inventing a special kind of rubber.
Sorvino recently revealed that a sequel to the Robin Schiff-created film is in the works. Amid the Television Critics Association winter press to promote The Traitors, Deadline asked Cumming for his thoughts on the long-awaited sequel.
“Yes, it seems like it’s finally… they’re doing deals and there’s no script yet,” he told us. “There’s no script yet but it seems like it’s actually … an ongoing situation rather than not.”

Mira Sorvino confirms that she and Lisa Kudrow are finalising contracts for Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2. More here.
It was all the way back in 1997 that out of the blue, Hollywood gave us a pair of impressive high school reunion movies. First up, in the UK at least, was Grosse Pointe Blank, starring John Cusack. That had the better reviews and initial response at the time. Yet since then, it’s Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion that’s come far more to the fore.
Starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, and directed by David Mirkin, the original film – as discussed in an old Film Stories podcast episode here – was penned by Robin Schiff. She based it on a 1988 stage production called Ladies Room, and it was revealed a little while back that she was cooking up a Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2.

The writers and actors strikes continued Friday with no sign of a speedy resolution, after a week of public back-and-forth did not appear to move the sides closer to an agreement.
A handful of leaders from the Writers Guild of America met with four top CEOs on Tuesday night, leading to a barrage of statements but no further in-the-room negotiations. Meanwhile, there has been no overture to SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14.
“I just feel we’re digging our heels in harder,” said Lang Parker, a SAG-AFTRA member, who was picketing at Fox.
On the writers’ side, there was widespread sentiment that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had failed in its bid to divide the union by releasing details of its latest offer. The WGA responded on Thursday that the studios’ proposal does not go far enough in protecting writers from existential threats.
“The writers are solid.

Alan Cumming is blasting Hollywood for Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion not having a sequel. The comedy that starred Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino was released in 1997 and despite talks about filming a follow-up, nothing ever materialized.
“I would love to do a sequel. I have to say, I think the fact that there hasn’t been is a really big example of the misogyny of Hollywood,” Cumming told The A.V. Club in an interview.
The Traitors U.S. host has a theory as to why the comedy directed by David Mirkin never got a sequel.
“You know, I think that the things I’ve heard about why, sort of like, ‘Oh, you know, they’re getting on a bit, older women, blah blah blah.’ Terrible. It’s such a popular film. If it was two men in that, you know, two men successful film, we would’ve had six by now,...

What’s really exciting is getting to see all of the other characters as much as we see Emily. We have fabulous characters, played by fabulous actors, and we get to see even more of them this season.”
In addition to Lily Collins as Emily Cooper, the third season stars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie Grateau, Lucas Bravo as Gabriel, Ashley Park as Mindy Chen, and Camille Razat as Camille. It looks like a sequel to the 1997 classic "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" is in the cards - er, Post-it Notes. On June 29, Mira Sorvino appeared on "Today" and confessed that the team is "getting closer" to a sequel project. Lisa Kudrow also hinted at a sequel on the same day when she appeared on "The Jess Cagle Show" on SiriusXM and said that the writer of the original film, Robin Schiff, is "thinking about it and coming up with something. Isn't that thrilling?"
Kudrow and Sorvino previously excited fans of the beloved movie when they reunited at a party in 2019. The pair also dropped a not-so-subtle nod to the film on Feb. 22 when they appeared together at the SAG Awards, wearing matching outfits inspired...

Several of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers, producers, writers and showrunners appeared at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on Friday to discuss the various ways they’re revolutionizing the industry by working their own perspectives into the mainstream — and making room for other underrepresented voices to do the same.
Historically, that hasn’t been the easiest thing to do in this business, said Skydance Television president Marcy Ross, who had to fight to get the Netflix comedy “Grace & Frankie” in front of viewers even with all of the proven talent attached.
“[When] we were developing it, Marta Kauffman, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and my brilliant partners at Skydance — All women, that was by design — We took it to an agency at that time, a room full of men,” said Ross. “We presented the package, where we’re going to go with it, the whole theme of disenfranchised older women, and they started to laugh.

Exclusive: YouTube has given a pilot order to The Edge of Seventeen, a half-hour comedy pilot from STXtv, based on the 2016 critically praised film of the same name.
Annabel Oakes is writing and directing the pilot, which will be executive produced by the film’s writer-director, Kelly Fremon Craig. Filming is slated to begin in January 2019.
The adaptation is described as a witty coming of age series, which, in the spirit of the film, will subvert standard teen show tropes while following a high-school student and her best friend as they navigate the relationships, feelings, and realities of being a teenage girl.
This will not be a straight remake or sequel to the feature from Robert Simonds’ Stx Entertainment. It will tell new stories borrowing the tone of the film and its commitment to capturing the teen age truthfully, in the vein of Fargo FX anthology series’ interpretation of the acclaimed movie.

Mira Sorvino wants to put this out into the universe — she is totally down for making a sequel to the 1997 cult comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
“I would be so into it,” she told IndieWire at the Television Critics Association press tour. “Let the powers that be that would control the possibility of it happening decide to do it. Let’s make a sequel.”
“Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” directed by David Mirkin, featured Sorvino alongside Lisa Kudrow as two lifelong best friends who travel back to their hometown for the titular high school reunion despite the fact that they may not have fully shed their oddball natures. Thanks to Robin Schiff’s sharp script, the film dodged romantic comedy tropes to emerge as a fun, original take on female friendship — as fun and original as the clothes that Romy and Michele designed themselves.

After nearly four decades of coasting along through countless women and random jobs, he now teaches yoga to the hot moms, trophy wives and aspiring celebrities of Santa Monica and Venice Beach.
But when Logan breaks up with his successful older girlfriend Amanda (Paget Brewster), who happens to be the owner of the yoga studio, things start to get complicated for the first time.

Down Dog, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Written by Robin Schiff
Directed by Brad Silberling
Released January 15, 2015 by Amazon
Writer Robin Schiff, while perhaps best known for her work on Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, has also been a noticeable presence on television, writing for shows such as Party of Five, Are you there, Chelsea?, and Super Fun Night. Amazon’s latest round of pilots sees Schiff delve into creating her own show, as she writes the pilot for Down Dog, about a yoga instructor who finds his life suddenly thrown into turmoil. Unfortunately, the pilot stumbles out of the gate and never recovers, as a combination of conflicting messages about the lead character and unmemorable or reductive secondary characters make this potential show one with little to no promise.
The episode seems oddly confused about how to feel about the lead character and his actions, which...

Amazon is entering pilot season strong with seven pilots for shows with big names attached. The pilots will include hour-long shows Cocked, Mad Dogs, The Man in the High Castle, and Point of Honor, half-hour shows Down Dog and Salem Rogers, and the half-hour docu-series The New Yorker Presents. Earlier this summer, rumors floated around the web about Amazon Studios ordering a new comedy series called Down Dog. Today, it seems they’ve finally started working on the series as they’ve cast Lyndsy Fonseca in a lead role. The Hollywood Reporter first wrote about the Nikita star’s new role in the pilot, which will introduce viewers to the character Logan (played by Bad Teacher’s Josh Casaubon), a deadbeat guy simply getting by on his “charisma, charm and good looks” until he’s forced to run his ex-girlfriend’s yoga studio. Fonseca will star opposite Casaubon, playing a yoga teacher named Winter who’s “described as stunning if bedraggled, waif and unreliable and always late — and a love interest for Logan.” Down Dog was created by Robin Schiff of Are You There, Chelsea? and the pilot starring Casaubon and Fonseca will be directed by Brad Silberling, director...

Mira Sorvino has said that she and Lisa Kudrow want to make a follow-up to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.
Sorvino, who played Romy White in the 1997 cult comedy hit, told E! that writer Robin Schiff was also on board, but suggested that Disney was holding the project back.
"Disney, if you're listening - everybody wants it!" she said at the Emmy Awards Performers Peer Group Celebration at the Montage Beverly Hills earlier this week.

She added: "I don't think they realise what a cult phenomenon it has become. I mean, people dress up as us for Halloween!

The stars and writer all want Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion 2. But will Disney pay up?
1997 wasn't a bad year for school reunion movies. Grosse Pointe Blank, starring John Cusack, was arguably the best of them. But Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion, starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow was also good fun. It followed a pair of 28 year olds attending their school reunion, and was a modest box office hit.
Yet Mira Sorvino, chatting to E! Online, argues that Disney don't "realise what a cult phenomenon it has become. I mean, people dress up as us for Halloween", she said. She also added that at Comic-Con last week, the question she kept getting asked was "when are you going to come here for the [Romy & Michelle] sequel?".
The answer to that? It lies in Disney's hands. Sorvino revealed that she's keen to do a sequel, as is Lisa Kudrow. Furthermore, writer Robin Schiff...

It was 17 years ago that Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow cracked our asses up playing two 28-year-olds who decide to embellish their lives in order to shine at their 10-year high school reunion in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Amazon Studios is serious about competing with network TV and Netflix. They just ordered two more comedies and they should be huge. It will be called Down Dog, while the other one is called Salem Rogers: Model of the Year 1998. Is will be about a retired model who is now in rehab. Both shows join their growing list of ordered series, which none have a release date set for.

As usual, Amazon Studios is not confirming, but I hear the digital company has ordered two more comedy pilots, Salem Rogers: Model of the Year 1998 by actress-writer Lindsey Stoddart and Down Dog by comedy veteran Robin Schiff (Are You There, Chelsea?). Salem Rogers centers on a self-centered, arrogant former supermodel who is forced to leave rehab after 10 years and reunites with her long-suffering former assistant, now a self-help writer using her years with Salem as an inspiration. Down Dog centers on a slacker working as a yoga instructor who takes over the yoga studio with no skills and experience, relying on the help of his two childhood friends. Salem Rogers and Down Dog join several other Amazon comedy pilots, including Really, Red Oaks, Cocked, Cosmopolitan and The Outlaws. Related: 2014 Amazon Studios Pilots...

After last week’s mess of an episode, last night’s Back in the Game is quite an improvement. Although it doesn’t do everything right, “She. Could. Go. All. The. At first it is a little odd to watch her struggle with asking Jack out because she is usually so confident, but Terry soon turns this around and then continues to remain strong throughout the episode.
