Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, New Year's Eve Starring about half of Hollywood, Garry Marshall's Warner Bros. release New Year's Eve is the latest movie to open to underwhelming figures in North America, according to early, rough box-office estimates found at Deadline.com. After grossing anywhere between $5 and $6 million on Friday, Dec. 9, New Year's Eve is expected to collect at most a mere $16 million over the weekend. For comparison's sake: Marshall's Valentine's Day took in $56.26 million in February 2010, while Ken Kwapis' similarly packaged all-star romantic comedy-drama He's Just Not That into You collected $27.78 million in February 2009. Box Office Mojo had predicted an opening for New Year's Eve close to $30 million. The extensive New Year's Eve cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Cary Elwes, Alyssa Milano, Common, Jessica Biel, Seth Meyers, Sarah Paulson, Til Schweiger, Carla Gugino, Katherine Heigl, Jon Bon Jovi, Sofia Vergara, Ashton Kutcher,...

The tabloid published the "news" that the Hollywood couple were legally separating and were in the process of negotiating the split of their millions and the custody of their many children. Since the tabloid refused to retract its "false and intrusive" claims and to offer an apology, Pitt and Jolie sued. An undisclosed settlement was reached at London’s High Court, reports the BBC. Brad Pitt will next be seen in Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life. Angelina Jolie’s next release is Phillip Noyce‘s Salt, which opens on Friday. Both Pitt and Jolie are well-known for their liberal and humanitarian views. Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp. also owns Fox News, among other television channels and publications. Photo: Salt...

Five years ago, the character Edwin A. Salt was a badass CIA agent in the vein of Jason Bourne or a new iteration of James Bond. Producers shopped the script — titled, predictably enough, "Edwin A. Salt" — to the studios, hoping to entice an A-list actor to sign up for some explosion-filled action. But they came up short.
Then, for awhile in 2007, Tom Cruise was circling the role, but still, the project never shifted into production. Eventually the team switched gears ... drastically.
Edwin became Evelyn, making way for Angelina Jolie to step into lead role, and the film was rechristened "Salt." Jolie's Salt is a CIA agent who goes on the run to clear her name after she's accused of being a Russian spy.

Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – Writer/director Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”) uses words the same way horror movie directors use blood or action movie auteurs use bullets. His weapon of choice, witty repartee, is delivered wonderfully in the enjoyable, clever, charming “Duplicity,” starring Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Wilkinson.
The same whip-smart, intellectual ear for dialogue that made “Michael Clayton” such an immensely interesting film is back in “Duplicity,” a film that could definitely be called a loose sibling of Gilroy’s last. If you showed nearly anyone the two films and asked them if they were made by the same writer/director, they would probably know that they were.
Read Brian Tallerico’s full review of “Duplicity” in our reviews section. Be aware that “Duplicity” is a much lighter film than “Clayton”. It’s a much less serious piece, even if Gilroy is back in the world of evil...

Chicago – Having met Viola Davis, Oscar-nominated for “Doubt,” it’s easy to believe that people who have spent time with this charming, fascinating woman might be more inclined to give her the edge in the very close Best Supporting Actress race.
It’s been long-rumored that an actor’s personality can play a major role in if they win an Oscar. It’s not that the performance isn’t the main focus of the award, but it’s human nature for people to want to reward colleagues that they respect and like. Davis is very easy to like and impossible not to admire.

Chicago – The inherit drama of a Catholic priest accused of molesting an African American boy during the 1960s would be enough to make for an interesting film on its own. In “Doubt,” this is one of the less-explored themes writer and director John Patrick Shanley examines.
Rating: 4.0/5.0 Instead, there is a tale of Machiavellian ethics, power struggles within the church, and of course the gray areas that encircle certainty and doubt.
Read Dustin Levell’s full review of “Doubt” in our reviews section. Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) is everything you could expect from a pre-Vatican II nun in 1964. Playing the strict disciplinarian at her Catholic St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx, Beauvier doesn’t believe that the students should be coddled with things like ball point pens.
“Every easy choice today will have its consequence tomorrow,” she explains to her colleague, a cynically free and more hopeful Sister James played by Amy Adams.

Chicago – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards this morning and jaws dropped at some of their choices and some of their exclusions. Somewhat surprisingly, “The Dark Knight” was left out of the Best Picture category, but far more shockingly, “Milk” was also off the short list. Both films did get a single acting nomination - for Heath Ledger and Sean Penn, respectively - but the confusing awards season was made increasingly more so this morning by the Hfpa.
The big films of the year for the Hfpa were “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, “Doubt”, and “Frost/Nixon”, all of which landed five nominations. “The Reader”, “Revolutionary Road”, “Slumdog Millionaire”, and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” all followed with four nods a piece.
