Alex Borstein is known to fans of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for her hilarious portrayal of agent Susie Myerson, and to viewers of “Family Guy” for providing the voice of Lois Griffin for more than two decades.
Now, those fans are going to experience a whole other side of Borstein when she takes to the stage for “Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits”, a new Prime Video comedy special that’s described as “a deeply personal and wildly fictitious account of one woman’s attempt to f**k with perception,” offering “a night of comedy, music, and waxing rhapsodic.”

Amazon is deepening its relationship with Alex Borstein.
In fact, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star is readying her first Amazon Original comedy special, which she’s titled Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits. It’s slated to hit on April 18th, four days after Maisel debuts its fifth and final season on the service. Fittingly, it was filmed at The Wolford Theatre, the fictional burlesque club from Maisel‘s fourth season, and relied on the award-winning crafts team from the show.
The special, which comes as Borstein and her co-stars embark on another crowded awards season, is being billed as the three-time Emmy winner’s “deeply personal and wildly fictitious account of one woman’s attempt to f*** with perception.” Equal parts provocative and whimsical, the self-penned performance will include assists from Borstein’s muse and maestro, Barcelona-native musicians, Eric Mills and Salva Rey. It is the first special from the former Mad TV star.

Director Ramin Bahrani jumped at the chance to helm this film adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s 2008 Man Booker prize-winning novel of the same name, cementing a place in the Iranian-American filmmaker’s repertoire of pictures where small men speak truth to power and underdogs shine. ‘The White Tiger’ is Bahrani’s first cinematic foray away from the confines of the voracious capitalism of America, this time taking him deep into the sights and sounds of an evolving India.
Bangalore 2010: We zoom into the mug of a wealthy-looking youngster, cigarette-in mouth and decked out in a black and maroon suit finery, looking like a million bucks. However, Balram (Adarsh Gourav) was not always the look of success he portrays. The kooky socio-realist comedy begins with Balram writing a lengthy email to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, inviting him to an unadulterated look at Modern India, told through his life story growing up.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Online, the memes are about guillotines, and at the movies, the stories are about why rich people should care about income inequality, if only for their own continued survival. Alongside Michel Franco’s blistering “New Order,” coming later this year, we get “The White Tiger,” Ramin Bahrani’s caustic adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s acclaimed novel about the lengths to which one man will go to climb out of his caste.
For as long as there has been literature, there have been tales of penniless men who advance by diligent hard work, cleverness, love, and perhaps a little larceny, but those narratives rarely address why the hero was penniless in the first place. “The White Tiger” illustrates the extremes to which the poor are driven to violate the rigid class structure of India, with the implication that our hero and his methodology is perhaps the face of post-superpower capitalism itself.

Quarantine sure stoked the creative juices of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” team. Normally, they’d be busy working on a new season of “Maisel” at this point. But since they’re following Covid-19 stay-at-home orders, the show’s dancers, musicians, cast and crew instead put together a 10-minute music video.
The video, which Amazon Prime Video will share with all TV Academy members on Monday, was the brainchild of “Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, promotes the show’s Emmy For Your Consideration efforts but also doubles as a showcase to raise awareness and support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, MusiCares, and Swans for Relief.
Shot in just three days, more than 60 people put this together. It opens with Ryan Farrell as Brye Adler, the host of “Miami After Dark.” Farrell filmed from his home in Brooklyn, which he redressed to match the show’s Miami aesthetic.

“Editing is very technical, but it’s very emotional,” describes Tim Streeto. He and Kate Sanford share editing duties on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and the pair spill their secrets on how they make the colorful world of 1960 zip along. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Sanford agrees with her collaborator’s sentiment about the emotional part of their job. She notes that she takes watching the dailies very seriously because “I have to pay attention to what moves me the first time.” It’s especially necessary in a show as stylized and comedic as “Maisel” for Sanford to ask herself “What do I find real and what do I find grounded?” Streeto chimes in that “there’s a lot of responsibility” to the actors and in showcasing their performances in the best way.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” may be dead and gone, but they are most certainly not forgotten — at least as far as the American Cinema Editors are concerned. The organization announced the Eddie Award winners for TV on Friday night, at a ceremony held at the International Ballroom in the Beverly Hilton, hosted by star of “The Good Place” D’Arcy Carden.
Tim Porter’s work on the epic 82-minute “Game of Thrones” episode “The Long Night” earned him the prize for Best Edited Drama Series For Non-Commercial Television, unsurprising given Porter’s win for the work at the Emmy Awards in September.
The same goes for Gary Dollner for his work on the Season 2 premiere of “Fleabag.” The editor’s work is just the latest accolade garnered by Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s exquisite comedy. That makes two consecutive Eddie wins for Dollner, who won Best...

“Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story” and “Parasite” have been nominated in the dramatic-film category at the American Cinema Editors’ Ace Eddie Awards, which honor the best in film editing.
In the comedy category, the nominees were “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”
The most notable omission was “1917,” which contains dozens of cuts but was designed to look as if it was filmed in one continuous, unbroken shot.

For editor Tim Streeto, the trippy “Maniac” was a far cry from his other series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Not just tonally, of course, with Annie (Emma Stone) and Owen (Jonah Hill) going on mind-bending and genre-bending adventures, but also because Patrick Somerville’s Netflix series was conceived as a long movie, with Cary Fukunaga (“Bond 25”) directing all 10 episodes (varying in length from 26 to 47 minutes).
“I asked Cary how stylistically he imagined these different episodes,” said Streeto, who had never worked with the director before. “Would there be a consistency visually to them or would he shoot them differently, like the Hitchcock caper in black-and-white [‘Exactly Like You’]? He said, no, he really wanted a consistency to them in terms of cinema grammar.
“They also had to feel like dreams through editing, through sound design, through music,” Streeto added. “Plus, they cross-boarded the entire series with Cary directing all of them and...

Each year American Cinema Editors [1] (Ace) recognizes the best editing of the year in narrative film, documentary and television through the Eddie Awards. The nominations for achievement in 2011 have been released [2]. They include a couple of expected films such as Hugo and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and feature a couple other inclusions that might count as surprises to some. The full list is below. This list comes from the Ace press release about this year's Eddies. In this case, I like that there are feature film categories for dramatic and comedy/musical efforts; not that editing one or the other is more difficult, but editing is such a core component of comedy and musical films, and one that so often goes unheralded and even unexamined, that it deserves a moment in the sun. hollywoodnews.com: The American Cinema Editors announced their nominations for the 62nd Annual Ace Eddie Awards Monday morning, recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries.
Like the Golden Globes, the editors divide their films between “Dramatic” and “Comedic” categories, so its tough to peg how (or if) they play into the five Oscar nomination slots. At the very least, you can guess that the Academy’s five nominees will come from the five features listed below.
Winners will be revealed during Ace’s 62nd annual black-tie awards ceremony on Saturday, February 18, 2012 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As previously announced, the ceremony will be hosted by actor/comedian Patton Oswalt. Later this month Ace will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.

Monday brings more scene analysis! We watch three scenes: one from Fearless, one from Punch Drunk Love, and one from Mulholland Drive; all of them are specifically chosen not just for picture, but also for sound. The scene from Punch Drunk Love is one I remember especially well. Adam Sandler’s character discovers a lone harmonium in the street. It sits in near silence. Sandler stares at it. The silence extends and then is abruptly broken as a truck zooms by – but we see the truck approach way before we hear it … which is jarring in an effective way, and an illustration of how much sound editing can change the way we absorb what we are watching.
