Angelina Jolie was perfectly cast as the deliciously evil Maleficent for Disney’s live action movie back in 2014, which put the focus entirely on the iconic Disney villain and managed to find a way to make her a sympathetic character. The film was a massive box office hit in 2014, making nearly $800 million worldwide and spawning a sequel just a handful of years later.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continued the story of Jolie’s Maleficent in 2019, though that film ended its worldwide box office run with just under $500 million. The sequel’s production budget was nearly $200 million, so Disney no doubt expected the film to make more in theaters. Nevertheless, it looks like we’re still getting a Maleficent 3 at some point soon.
A new profile that The Wall Street Journal wrote up on Angelina Jolie this week confirms that Jolie is currently attached to star in a third movie in the Maleficent franchise.

Bringing a team together to make a movie places the director at the pinnacle of the decision-making pyramid. Everyone is, after all, working to serve their particular vision. However, transforming that model into one of true collaboration can make for a much sweeter success story.
Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, the force behind this year’s “Elvis” biopic, have sustained a decades-long partnership, both personally and also professionally.
“I am in fact a serial collaborator,” Luhrmann has said of working with the same teams of people repeatedly, a method that has clearly resulted in commercial and critical success if Oscar nominations count as evidence.
The pair’s three other best known collaborations — “The Great Gatsby”, “Moulin Rouge!”, and “Romeo + Juliet” — garnered 11 Academy Award nominations among them. Four became wins for Martin’s costume and production design.
“Elvis” is a major Oscar contender this year with eight nominations reflecting Luhrmann and Martin’s efforts.

In the world of fairy tale telling, it always seems to be good against evil. In more ways than one, good always triumphs over evil. This is the way of life and the way the century-old tales have gone. However, with a new wave of films positioning villains as heroes, trying to flip the script on one of the world’s most popular fairytale stories was a huge risk to take. Backed by Disney, Robert Stromberg went on to direct Linda Woolverton’s screenplay. As expected, Maleficent (2014) received mixed reviews from critics. Yet, it became Angelina Jolie’s highest-grossing movie. With a

Since Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland grabbed handfuls of eat me cake to become a ginormous box office smash, Disney have really started their live-action remake train rolling. It seems that with each passing year we have armfuls of new live-action remakes/reboots/prequels/sequels of their animated classics being primed for release. Thus far the results have been consistently enjoyable, if varying, with the finest probably being Jon Favreau’s incredible The Jungle Book in 2016. But, shockingly, their latest offering, Cruella, just might be the best since that point.
Much like Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent, you might say it was a somewhat challenging task to take one of Disney’s nastiest and most iconic villains and make a film about her origins. Naturally people will struggle to have sympathy for an attempted puppy killing fashion magnate, but Craig Gillespie’s very very pleasant surprise Cruella, does something a little different with the material.

When Joachim Rønning stepped in to direct “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” the sequel to Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent,” he quickly learned that the story of Aurora and her godmother was one close to the actress’ heart.
“She’s very hands-on as a producer, as the star of the film, the keeper of the film and she’s Maleficent!” Rønning told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven, noting that the Oscar winner was “relentless” in her dedication to the project. “We worked very hard for months and months on the script with the writers and [on] the angel of her horns, the shape of her wings — the color of her lips is hours and hours of work! I never thought I’d know that much about red lipstick!”
He added: “That’s why she’s so good — she’s so hard-working. It brings out the best and the worst in you at times but...

With her horned headpiece, impossible alabaster cheekbones and high-camp attitude, Maleficent looms as by far the most iconic villain Disney ever created. Landing Angelina Jolie to play the “Sleeping Beauty” baddie in 2014’s live-action redo was a dream-casting coup for which the studio was rewarded with three-quarters of a billion dollars at the global box office. That’s three-quarters of a billion reasons why the studio would want to dash off a sequel, although I can think of at least one why it should have reconsidered: The “Wicked”-like original went so far in its flip-the-script fairy-tale revisionism that the antagonist had essentially seen the error of her ways by the end — it was her kiss, not Prince Phillip’s, that awakened Aurora — leaving “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” almost no way to live up to its title.

Angelina Jolie is back as Maleficent, the Disney villain who practically invented "tfw big mood."
Robert Stromberg's 2014 live-action film Maleficent explored the classic tale of a princess (Elle Fanning) who, on her sixteenth birthday, pricked her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fell into a deep sleep from which she would never awaken, thanks to a vengeful and powerful fairy by the name of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie). It was a pretty big hit for Disney so, even though the story wrapped up nicely, a sequel is on the way later this year.
The follow-up film finds Maleficent plunging back into a vintage dark mood after clashing with Michelle Pfeiffer's Queen Ingrith over the ongoing issues surrounding the protection of the moors. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Robert Lindsay, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, and Juno Temple also star.

‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil’ Trailer: Angelina Jolie Returns To Revisionist ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Tale
It’s been roughly five years since Angelina Jolie said “I hate you” directly to a baby’s face in a Disney movie, and what a joy that was. Though 2014’s “Maleficent” wasn’t quite as memorable as its fierce lead performance, Jolie’s witty and regal turn as the “Sleeping Beauty” villain reimagined as an anti-hero was more than welcoming of another installment.
With original film director Robert Stromberg handing the reigns to “Kon Tiki” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” co-director Joachim Rønning, Maleficent will fly again this fall with “Maleficent” Mistress of Evil.”
The sequel sees quite an influx of talent, with Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harris Dickinson, Warwick Davis, and Ed Skerin joining the ensemble that already featured Elle Fanning, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, and Juno Temple.

Tim Burton celebrates his 60th birthday on August 25. In his 30-plus year career, the director has carved out a niche for himself making quirky, eccentric films that are often box office bonanzas. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at all 18 of his films, ranked from worst to best, in the photo gallery above.
Burton began his career as an animator for Walt Disney Studios before making the short films “Vincent” (1982) and “Frankenweenie” (1984). He directed his first feature when he was just 26 years old: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985). Burton followed that success with the macabre comedy “Beetlejuice” (1988) before entering the world of blockbusters with the dark, ominous superhero adventure “Batman” (1989).
From the beginning, Burton displayed a talent for crafting visually stunning worlds unlike any seen before. Four of his films, in fact — “Batman,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Alice in Wonderland” — have won Oscars for their art direction.

When “Ocean’s Eleven” hit theaters in December of 2001, just 12 days before the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the film industry was about to face an existential dilemma. Hollywood has always been caught in a tug-of-war between risk and reward, but the emergence of digital technology — and the supposed “death” of mid-budget movies that it precipitated — was just starting to exert a strong new pull.
As the star system faded, the studios grew less inclined to shoot for the moon. Budgets grew, ambition shrank, and franchises that needed to perform on six continents just to break even began to inherit the Earth. Today, as the “Ocean’s” franchise has been exhumed with an anonymous director at the helm, the normalization of this process is complete. While “Ocean’s Eight” is due to perform well during its opening weekend, a recent wave of vanilla studio misfires — coupled with a...

You can count me among the fans of 2014’s Maleficent, a dark fantasy starring Angelina Jolie as the title character. Pirates Of The Caribbean 5's co-director is set to take on the Maleficent sequel...
After a couple of years where it seemed to not be going anywhere, Disney now appears to be fast-tracking the sequel to 2014’s Maleficent. The original film told the story of Sleeping Beauty’s infamous villain, played in live action form by Angelina Jolie. It was a huge hit, and there were immediate sequel plans, but most of us had assumed they’d petered out.
Not so.
Joachim Ronning, who co-directed last summer’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, is now in talks to take over the director’s chair on Maleficent 2. Robert Stromberg, who helmed the first film, was not included on the press tour for the first film, and more recently has directed The Martian Vr for Fox, and worked on Game Of Thrones visual effects. Angelina Jolie will return to star in the live-action take of the famous animated villain, reprising her role from the 2014 hit that grossed $758 million at the global box office. Hulu has launched a brand new ad campaign to spread the word of its recently-launched live TV service, and it has tapped the actress Anna Kendrick as its first celebrity spokesperson in five years.
The campaign comprises four 30-second television commercials, the first of which debuted during the Today show this morning, Variety reports. Spots will continue to roll out on national broadcast and cable networks through the end of the year, bolstered by digital components. Directed by Robert Stromberg (Maleficent), the campaign is themed ‘For The Audience’ and features the tagline “TV come true.”

I'll be honest, I wasn't a big fan of what Disney did with Maleficent. I liked the character as a hardcore insane villain, but they wanted to give her more heroic qualities in this retooled version of the character. I'm just more interested in the villainous side of the character. Regardless of that, Angelina Jolie is perfect for the role.
While at the Telluride Film Festival, the actress said that she planned on returning to acting after directing her latest film First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers. The first film on her list is the Maleficent sequel. In regards to that she says:
“I am now the breadwinner for the family, so it’s time. We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel.”

Angelina Jolie returns for Disney sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which is coming in time for Halloween.
Following the sizeable success of the original, Disney moved ahead with a sequel to its 2014 Sleeping Beauty-inspired film, Maleficent. While the first film, directed by Robert Stromberg, already told the story of Sleeping Beauty from the villain's point-of-view --all while turning said awesome villain into the boring hero of the story--Disney is convinced there is more money... err, story left to find in the property!
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the official name of the sequel. The film reunites Angelina Jolie with her Princess Aurora, Elle Fanning. This is Jolie's first sequel since Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, all the way back in 2003. And since she passed on sequels for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt, this is kind of a big deal.

Although Virtual Reality (Vr) has yet to take off commercially, so far the Hollywood studios are mostly embracing the new digital frontier as a marketing vehicle to promote their franchises. On Wednesday, Paramount hosted the first Vrtl Summit for Vr professionals and investors, and announced a partnership with MoveoPlus to provide Moveo Virtual Reality Simulators in theaters and theme parks, with content provided by J.J. Abrams and Michael Bay.
While they are among many top directors, from Alejandro González Iñárritu to David Goyer, who are experimenting with Vr storytelling, everyone acknowledges that the technology needs to improve — along with bringing down the cost of those bulky headsets. And the push to bring engaging content to consumers remains a challenge. It comes down to effective storytelling. Nobody’s going to pay for Vr marketing promos, so immersive adventures and interactions with virtual characters are going to have to be compelling for...

Angelina Jolie is in the midst of formulating her return to the movie scene following recent personal troubles.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the actress-producer-director is mulling over multiple projects, including the long-rumored Maleficent 2. Last we checked in on the fantastical sequel, screenwriter Linda Woolverton merely confirmed its existence – “this very minute, it’s blinking at my computer.” That was almost nine months ago, and though THR alludes to the Maleficent follow-up during its exhaustive interview, there’s no mention of a tangible update.
Beyond the realm of dark fantasy and vengeful fairies, Jolie is reportedly eyeing not one, but two large-scale Universal projects. The first is an adaptation of Simon Sebag Montefiore’s Catherine the Great and Potemkin: The Imperial Love Affair, which chronicles the fiery love affair between the eponymous Russian ruler and Prince Grigory Potemkin. There’s also mention of an espionage thriller based on...

Robert Stromberg is going from Disney's Malificent to a new slasher movie called Carnival...
The upcoming noir slasher film Carnival is about a knife-throwing artist performing at a traveling circus. But the barnstorming blade buff is not the villain, he is the hunter. In the tradition of Tod Browning’s Freaks, Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre, Hammer’s Vampire Circus and Halloween perennial Carnival Of Souls, Carnival will be a three-ringed affair.
Carnival will be directed by Robert Stromberg, the Oscar-winning production designer who made Maleficent (2014) with Angelina Jolie as the sympathetic, malicious witch. Stromberg was the first production designer to ever win back-to- back Oscars, for Avatar and Alice In Wonderland. He turned the lonely journey of astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) from Ridley Scott’s The Martian into The Martian: Vr Experience, which was released at Sundance last year. Stromberg also directed the pilot Dawn for Hulu and MGM.

Want to be stranded on Mars just like Matt Damon's Mark Watney? Now you can be, thanks to a Ridley Scott-produced Vr experience...
Here's an interesting one: Ridley Scott has opted to revisit The Martian by working with Fox Innovation Lab to executive produce a Virtual Reality experience inspired by his much-loved Matt Damon on Mars movie from 2015.
The official press bumf tells us that "The Martian Vr Experience is an interactive, immersive adventure with viewers participating from astronaut Mark Watney’s perspective, performing tasks that will facilitate his chances for survival.
"Users can fly onto the surface of Mars, steer at zero gravity through space, drive a rover and experience other key scenes from the hit film in a 360-degree virtual reality environment."
The great Mr Scott himself chimed in with this statement:
“I’ve always tried to approach filmmaking from the standpoint of creating an immersive experience.

If there was one thing missing from Ridley Scott’s “The Martian,” it was the true, visceral experience of being right there on the red planet as Matt Damon’s Mark Watney struggled to make his way home to Earth.
