Netflix’s first teaser trailer for Leave the World Behind starts off with a conversation setting up the story, and then hits the gas pedal as terrifying events wreak havoc across the globe.
The apocalyptic thriller is based on Rumaan Alam’s bestselling novel and stars Oscar winner Julia Roberts, Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, Myha’la, Farrah Mackenzie, Charlie Evans, and Kevin Bacon. Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail adapted Alam’s novel and directed.
Sam Esmail and Julia Roberts serve as producers along with Chad Hamilton, Marisa Yeres Gill, and Lisa Gillan. Author Alam, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman, and Nick Krishnamurthy executive produce.
Esmail’s behind the scenes team includes costume designer Catherine Marie Thomas, editor Lisa Lassek, production designer Anastasia White, and director of photography Tod Campbell.

Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali are dealing with the potential end of the world in “Leave the World Behind,” an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Rumaan Alam from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.
In the trailer Roberts and Ethan Hawke are vacationing on Long Island when they are intercepted by a mysterious stranger (Ali in a role originally earmarked for Denzel Washington), who tells the couple of a mysterious blackout and his thoughts that this event is just the first in a series of catastrophes.
Kevin Bacon plays a potentially sinister local man, with Myha’la, Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans in supporting roles. Not only is the set-up for the movie incredibly creepy but it feels real, especially given the recent weather events brought on by global warming (the flooding in New York most recently).

“Oh my god, that’s something that I want — I want that.” This is the response that Cat Thomas hopes to inspire with the wardrobe of Kaley Cuoco‘s character Cassie Bowden in “The Flight Attendant” on HBO Max. The veteran costume designer, also known in the past for projects as Catherine Marie Thomas, explains in her exclusive interview with Gold Derby about the debut season of the dramedy (watch the video above), “I really like the fact that she felt like a grounded New York woman — someone that people related to and that’s why people were so attracted to her fashion and to her clothing because there was this realness about her.”
SEEThomas discuss her Emmy nomination.

TV mysteries are a lot like bumpy flights: So long as they end well, earlier quibbles can be forgiven. “The Flight Attendant,” one of HBO Max’s first marquee originals, didn’t offer its finale to critics in advance, and the first four episodes have plenty of bumps if you want to look for them. But the sleek ride Susanna Fogel, Steve Yockey, and especially star/producer Kaley Cuoco have cobbled together makes it hard to push the call button, let alone start looking for a parachute. Meshing together a handful of genres — part mystery-thriller, part dark comedy, part surreal romantic-fantasy — the hourlong series careens forward with a propulsive pace, curious side stories, and an enticing cast of characters. Suspension of disbelief is a requisite and nagging questions need to be held until the end, but all signs point to net positive trip, even if a safe landing is still up in the air.

Every “Homecoming” outfit had a specific purpose to designer Catherine Marie Thomas. The Amazon series primarily takes place in an eerie facility for military veterans, where Julia Roberts plays Heidi Bergman, a friendly but stressed counselor who takes a special interest in one of the veterans, Walter Cruz (Stephan James). Thomas wanted to suggest an environment of free will as an illusion with the costuming on Walter and his fellow veterans. “What we wanted to accomplish was this comfortable environment where it seemed like they had a choice of what they wore in a parameter, sort of like a university,” Thomas explains. “You go to a store, you get issued the campus sweatshirt, the shorts, this kind of branding atmosphere.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Thomas above.

You can thank “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail for finally getting Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney together. Fictionally speaking, that is, as the two-time co-stars will be playing lovers on Amazon’s upcoming thriller series “Homecoming.” And it only took them three projects, over two decades, and the help of Esmail, to officially hook them up on screen.
“This is our third time working together,” Roberts told reporters during the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday, of teaming up with fellow “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “August: Osage County” alum, once more.
“But this is the ‘reunion,'” Esmail, who is directing “Homecoming,” chimed in. “Like, ’cause the second time you guys weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend.”

A new short film competition, Vivid Digital, offers entrants the chance to get their work noticed – not least when it is screened on a 15m video wall in the heart of the City
Do you miss Screen Test and its young film-makers' competition? Discovering a talented director without the guiding hands of Messrs Rodd, Trueman and latterly Curry is like panning for gold in YouTube's river of piano-playing cats. What's more, funding films – never mind getting potential film investors to look at your work – can be a trial for aspiring directors and writers.
Enter, then, Vivid Digital. Aside from putting prize money and a commission up for grabs, this new short film competition has the wider aim of showcasing work by up-and-coming film-makers in a location where they could conceivably attract investment for future projects – namely, the heart of the City.

Quentin Tarantino has directed films that feature some of the most iconic costumes of the last twenty years, e.g. Reservoir Dogs’ black suits (Betsy Heimann), Mia Wallace’s trouser suit (Heimann), the Kill Bill tracksuit (Kumiko Ogawa, Catherine Marie Thomas). Yet no Tarantino movie has ever won or even been nominated for a Costume Design Oscar; a travesty that may boil down to his stories often being contemporary, not period. World War II set Inglourious Basterds (Anna B. Sheppard) was an exception, but again, amazingly, not even a nomination.
Django Unchained, costumed by Sharen Davis, might just buck this trend. It is period so immediately stands in good stead. Secondly, judging by the trailers released so far, the palette is primary colourful, fun and rich with detail; one thing the Academy does not tend to appreciate is subtle. Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Costume designer Catherine Marie Thomas proves that Sandra Bullock’s character in The Proposal (2009, directed by Anne Fletcher) does not need a closet full of clothes to make her mark. Here Catherine Marie Thomas discusses exclusively with Jill Burgess for Clothes on Film just why the film is so special to her.
Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is a big shot New York book editor, making life hell for her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). One morning Margaret is informed by her bosses that she has lost her visa status and will be deported to her native Canada. When Andrew appears to whisk her away from the meeting, Margaret announces to her bosses that she and Andrew are engaged to be married, which until now they have chosen to keep a secret.

It's not your imagination: Work is making you sick. As companies do more with less, stress and subsequent mental-health issues are on the rise, affecting 25% of workers and costing employers $80 billion a year. Catherine Thomas, chairperson of this Ottawa conference, reminds us that big change can start small: "Do not check your email when you go on vacation. The office will survive." And those 14-hour days? They've got to go. "It becomes physically impossible to be productive," says Clare Miller, director of the Partnership for Workplace Mental Health. "Go home, have a life, be a whole person." On your way out the door, might we suggest leaving this advice on your boss's desk? -- SS

Drew looks incredible, Justin transitions from comic side-kick to a leading man. Filled with pungent wit, voracious dry humping, and a truly plausible relationship progression, Going The Distance has me smitten.
It’s not easy to craft a romantic comedy these days. The audiences have not only gotten smarter, but every possible turn a relationship can take has been tried. Watching romcom’s these days the resounding thought as we hunker down is how artfully and enjoyably can the filmmakers get us to the ending that we know is inevitable. Going The Distance delivers a great route. It doesn’t feel forced by the running time of the movie nor does the relationship transition from happy to sad and back for the sake of a joyous ending – it just moves fluidly and better so, believably. If it weren’t for its’ R rating, this films box office haul could be much bigger.

Whip It (2009) is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, and by all accounts it’s very good too. Set in the literally hard-hitting world of roller derby, Whip It tells the tale of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) and her struggle to find acceptance in this merciless contact game along with some meaning in her life.
We have already covered the costumes in a short piece looking at the ‘vogue’ of roller derby (Here) with its totally original mix of sporting attire and fashion customisation. If Whip It had been a bigger hit in the States, possibly via more accurate marketing from its distributor, then this look would be all over the fashion pages by now. Hopefully when the film arrives in the UK early next month we can do it more justice. Just going to see the thing would be a good start.
Here, then, to get you in the mood...

Much was made of Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut. Barrymore, as a Hollywood veteran, however, used many of her connections to help with the success of Whip It (2009). One of those connections was the well-respected Costume Designer, Catherine Marie Thomas.
Known for her adept diversity, Thomas has been the designer on films as wide-ranging as Kill Bill (Vols. I & II) and The Prairie Home Companion. With Whip it, however, Thomas found herself in a position of freedom, as Roller Derby is traditionally known as having an “anything goes” approach to uniforms; from fishnets to feathers, nothing is off the table.
With team names like The Sirens, The Holy Rollers, and The Hurl Scouts, Thomas was able to work with themes for each team’s uniform. Additionally, because the actual sport of Roller Derby has no real guidelines regarding uniforms (i.e. skirt length, presence of “flair”), Thomas also had the...

Award winners from the Cdg are in for a celebratory weekend. Monique Prudhomme’s sensational costumes for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus won in the ‘Excellence in Fantasy Film’ category, once again leaving fellow nominee, and all round big hitter, Avatar, out in the cold.
Other recipients at the 12th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards included Doug Hall for Crazy Heart in the ‘Contemporary’ section, eclipsing our prediction Marina Draghici for Precious, which is unfortunately off the Academy’s list on March 7th as well.
In television, Janie Bryant took the prize for her continually exciting work on Mad Men in ‘Period/Fantasy’. While ‘Mini-series’ saw Catherine Marie Thomas get the nod for Grey Gardens, an enthralling TV movie about the kooky aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis. Lou Eyrich for Glee received the Contemporary award, which is a real result as the costume character representation on that show is so precise.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

When first-time director Michael Sucsy set out to make a feature-film version of Grey Gardens, he was armed with two top-tier actresses to play the leads: Jessica Lange as Big Edie and Drew Barrymore as Little Edie. But he also had to worry about staying true to the mother and daughter's predilection for outrageous ensembles lest he sartorially offend legions of Grey Gardens fans. Costume designer Catherine Thomas was hired to dress Big and Little Edie in looks meant to reflect their lives over the course of four decades—from their heyday as proper New York debutantes to their reclusive piecemeal lives of squalor. Actress, fashion designer, and hardcore Grey Gardens enthusiast Tara Subkoff talked with Thomas about refashioning the Beales for our time.
Tara Subkoff: Hello?
Catherine Thomas: Can you hear me? I'm trying to find a place that doesn't sound crackly.
Ts: You sound like you're shopping somewhere.

Milena Canonero, currently designing the costumes for Sofia Coppola's upcoming Marie-Antoinette, sewed up two nominations for the seventh annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. Canonero's silvery scuba suits and red wool caps for Touchstone Pictures' The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and her discreet pregnancy garb for Julia Roberts on Warner Bros. Pictures' Ocean's Twelve will compete in the excellence in contemporary costume design heat. Canonero's designs are up against Beatrix Aruna Pasztor's suave suits for Paramount Pictures' Alfie; Melissa Toth's gritty thrift-store finds for Focus Features' Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; and Catherine Marie Thomas' modern-day Western outfits for Miramax's Kill Bill-Vol. 2.
