Ina Garten knows how to throw a New Year’s Eve party. And we’re not talking about a massive bash with hundreds of guests. Rather, the Barefoot Contessa star has a knack for creating an intimate dinner party experience complete with delicious food, tasty drinks, and plenty of conversation.
Garten rang in the new year across the ocean this year, celebrating the event at her home in Paris. And while she kept it small and elegant, fans couldn’t help but notice one “wonky” feature happening in her dinner photo.

Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is a box office behemoth, making $380 million in the U.S. and $690 million worldwide. What does composer Daniel Pemberton think about those huge numbers for the sequel? “It’s always really nice when a movie actually super connects with people,” he tells us. “I don’t think I’ve ever done any movie that’s connected as intensely as ‘Spider Verse.’ It is nice when [box office] does correlate to great work, and I’m really proud of what all of us did on this film.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Pemberton talks openly about the “collaborative process” between himself and the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, plus editor Michael Andrews and writer/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. He says, “I think one of the things that really works is we’re all throwing ideas backwards and forwards with each other being like,...

Making his debut in the opening clash of the 1965-66 Ashes tour at the Gabba, he took two wickets, including England captain Mike Smith.
Following his death, Cricket Australia tweeted: “Cricket Australia would like to join Queensland Cricket in offering our condolences to the family and friends of Peter Allan.
“The tall right-arm quick represented his country in the 1965-66 Ashes amid a long and successful career with Queensland. May he rest in peace.”
He made a belated Test debut as a 29-year-old, touring the West Indies with Australia in 1964-65, but did not play a Test due to illness.

Hulu’s upcoming six-part limited docu-series “The 1619 Project” will launch Jan. 26, Disney’s Onyx Collective announced on Thursday. The series is an expansion of the project of the same name from journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and The New York Times Magazine.
Hosted by Hannah-Jones, “The 1619 Project” seeks to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative. The episodes — “Democracy,” “Race,” “Music,” “Capitalism,” “Fear” and “Justice” — are adapted from essays of Hannah-Jones “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story” and examine how the legacy of slavery shapes different aspects of contemporary American life.
“1619” is a Lionsgate Production in association with One Story Up Productions, Harpo Films and The New York Times. It was executive produced by Hannah-Jones, director Roger Ross Williams, editor Caitlin Roper, Kathleen Lingo, The New York Times’ editorial director for film and television and Oprah Winfrey.

Freddie Prinze Jr. says his latest project, a Netflix holiday rom-com co-starring Aimee Garcia, is one of the few times he’s gotten to play a character written explicitly as Latino.
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment published Thursday, the Punky Brewster actor and Star Wars: Rebels voice star opened up about how limited his opportunities to play culturally specific characters in Hollywood have been across his nearly three-decade career.
His latest role in Christmas With You, he says, was one of a handful of roles that defied that. “I’ve never gotten to do it before unless I wrote the damn thing,” Prinze said. “So when [director] Gabriela [Tagliavini] brought this to me, all I wanted was the opportunity to earn her respect.”

The seasonal flick follows Angelina (Garcia), a pop star who’s grappling with career burnout and escapes to a small town where she finds not only inspiration but a shot of love.
Inspired by an Instagram video from a young fan named Cristina (Deja Monique Cruz), Angelina decides to visit the young girl at her school as a bit of a publicity stunt. However, thanks to a fierce winter storm, the singer finds herself snowed in with Cristina and her father Michael (Prinze Jr.), who just so happens to be a music teacher and songwriter. The two inevitably begin a musical collaboration, but their bond might also grow to become something more intimate.

I was still dressed as a mummy when I sat down to watch TV after trick-or-treating on Halloween night in 1992. I was a skinny lad, so binding my limbs tightly in bandages made me look more like a weird spindly white insect than King Tut. Self-conscious of this, I wore my Adidas bench coat over the costume, which completely ruined the effect.
I couldn't tell you what my costume was 12 months earlier or the following year, but Halloween of '92 remains so clear in my mind because that was the night of "Ghostwatch." I loved anything related to the supernatural, so I just couldn't wait: The BBC was conducting a live paranormal investigation into poltergeist activity! It was a big event heavily publicized in the run-up to Halloween, and 11 million viewers tuned in that night. The next day the whole country was talking about it.

As the breakout star of the Oscar-winning “Minari” and a budding fashion icon, Alan S. Kim is combining two of his passions for a new creative project.
The 9-year-old leads the short film “Another Day in the City,” shot by Cass Bird for fashion brand Thom Browne, which dropped on Thursday.
Kim, who wore the designer for his stroll down the Academy Awards carpet this year, is repping Browne’s new collection of summer childrenswear — one that leans heavily on seersucker and sophistication. Homeland and Supergirl actor David Harewood is to front a BBC Two documentary on the history of blackface minstrelsy after recent controversy about the issue in several high-profile comedy shows.
Blackface With David Harewood will explore the origins of blackface in early 19th-century America and how the form of entertainment, which acted as a delivery system for racist tropes, made its way to Britain. According to the logline, he will seek to understand how it shaped ideas of blackness in popular culture and why it endured so long.
The hour-long film is made by historian David Olusoga’s Uplands Television. Harewood is writing and presenting, while the producer and directors are Eric Haynes and Nia Campbell. Executive producers are Olusoga, Mike Smith, and Harewood.
Comedy faced a reckoning over blackface last year, when the BBC and Netflix removed episodes of Little Britain from their libraries after the Matt Lucas and...

Warning: Contains spoilers for It’s a Sin episode 4
All five episodes of Russell T Davies’ blistering 1980s-set AIDS drama It’s a Sin are a tribute to the lives of gay men lost to the virus, but one scene in particular was written in specific recognition of an individual. Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, Davies describes a moment in episode four as “a little smile” towards actor Dursley McLinden. “I was really desperate to do it,” said Davies. “I did it for Dursley.”
The scene features series lead Olly Alexander as actor Ritchie Tozer, who’s playing a part in a fictional 1988 Doctor Who serial. Dressed in a futuristic uniform and holding a blaster, Tozer’s character Trooper Linden leads a team defending an under-attack space station. “Remember,” he tells his soldiers, “if they get through, we lose the crystal, and if we lose that, it’s the end of the world.

Exclusive: Six years after Sarah Jones was killed on the Georgia set of Midnight Rider, director Randall Miller is facing being arrested again.
Law enforcement authorities in the Peach State today requested that Department of Community Supervision issue a warrant for Miller for violating the conditions of his probation, we have learned. The effort arises from Deadline’s exclusive earlier this week that Miller had directed the DGA sanctioned film Higher Grounds last summer in Serbia, Colombia and the UK.
“I have requested Wayne County probation to issue a warrant for his arrest,” Assistant District Attorney John Johnson told Deadline on Friday. “Randall Miller has violated the terms of his probation,” the Georgia prosecutor added of Miller getting behind the camera on the Kate Nash-starring Higher Grounds. “As a director, he’s in violation.”

Haley Smith, a contestant on Season 11 of American Idol, died Saturday following a motorcycle crash in Millinocket, Maine, Millinocket police confirmed to Deadline. She was 26.
In a statement, police said it appears Smith failed to negotiate a sharp turn and crashed. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the crash is pending.
Smith auditioned in 2012 in Colorado at age 18, performing Rufus and Chaka Kahn’s “Tell Me Something Good” for judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. Tyler seemed particularly impressed, telling Smith he loved her voice and was honored to hear her sing, adding she was right out of his “era.” She made it to Hollywood, but was cut after the first round.
Smith’s father, Mike Smith, told TMZ, which was first to report her death, that his daughter was a good rider and believes a deer may have been involved in the accident.

Steve Goodman, Artistic Hair ***
Steve Goodman, Affordable Art ****
John Prine is rightly getting plenty of love right now, which makes it a good time to reconsider the life and work of his friend and occasional collaborator, Steve Goodman. Thirty-five years after his death, Goodman is now mostly remembered as the writer of “City of New Orleans,” which Arlo Guthrie turned into a piece of haunted, mythic Americana; Goodman also produced one of Prine’s strongest and most agile albums, 1978’s Bruised Orange. The ESPYs’ television broadcast only paints so much of the picture of what went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles from sports’ biggest award ceremony. Viewers at home saw Tracy Morgan host, celebrities like Sandra Bullock present and athletes including Drew Brees, Alex Morgan and Giannis Antetokounmpo receive awards, but they didn’t quite catch all the exciting moments left off TV. Here’s what they missed:
“Fresh Prince” Dwyane Wade: During a commercial break karaoke challenge, Wade showed his skills on the mic as he rapped along to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. The retired basketball superstar laid down the rhymes from the comfort of his own seat, next to his wife, Gabrielle Union. “In West Philadelphia born and raised…” Wade rapped, filling in the remainder of the song with perfect memory as the lyrics cut out.

Guess how many songs in the Top 10 biggest tracks in the U.S. last year were written by a solo songwriter? Zero. The year before that? Zero.
